Mendota Elementary School District #289 serves approximately 1,000 students across three schools: Blackstone School (K-1st), Lincoln School (2nd-4th) and Northbrook School (Pre-K, 5th -8th). Sullivan’s Foods
Over the decades, Mendota’s hometown grocery store has seen its share of names and rebranding – Classon’s, Thompson Food Basket, and, most recently, Sullivan’s Foods. Regardless of the name on the building, the foundation of the store has always been the same: serving the community.
“We’re proud to service the town and surrounding areas,” said Dylan Inman, Sullivan’s Foods Store Director. “We strive to meet the needs of our guests every day and support our community in a way to help drive it forward.”
Since arriving in 2000, Sullivan’s Foods has been an essential staple in the community. The grocery store donates to the local food pantry multiple times a week and, in collaboration with Shaw Media, hosts an annual large-scale food drive. In addition, Sullivan’s Foods has
created strategic partnerships with local organizations including the Lions Club, Mendota Area Senior Services, the police and fire departments, and more to better support these groups who strengthen the community.
In 2023, it was announced that the Mendota store, and all 11 Sullivan’s Foods locations, will change ownership again. The store was acquired by Saint Cloud, MN-based Coborn’s, Inc., an employee-owned grocery retailer with locations across the Midwest. The name, Sullivan’s Foods, will remain the same
and so will the store’s community foundation.
Coborn’s has a strong and long tradition of community giving dating back to the first store in Sauk Rapids, MN. Over 100 years later, the company is still driven by the desire to support the communities who continue to support them.
Each year, Coborn’s donates more than $3.5 million in financial contributions and thousands of volunteer hours to the communities it serves.
“Coborn’s is family-operated and shares the same values that make the Mendota area a prominent place to live,” said Inman. “They not only invest in their stores but in their employees and communities. We’re excited to join forces to create an incredible shopping experience for our guests and better serve the people of Mendota.”
City continues to invest in downtown revitalization
From building improvements to new events, the City of Mendota continues efforts to invest in the downtown revitalization.
In the fall of 2024, the Mendota City Council approved a vacant building ordinance to address retail buildings that had sat vacant for more than six months. The aim of the ordinance is to work with property owners to identify a plan, to have an active business in the retail space, whether it is locating a new tenant or selling a property, explained Annie Short, Project Director for the City of Mendota.
Since launching the program, there have been six buildings sold, Short said. Additionally, there has been construction to remodel three buildings with plans for more in the future.
Another successful program has been the façade grant program, financial
support for exterior building improvements, assisting with costs for up to $7,000. Short said property owners have been able to use the grant money to help with costs for tuck pointing, paint, new windows and signage. In the past year, there have been seven properties to receive the façade grant.
“We’re looking to revitalize our retail business by finding ways to promote our existing businesses as well as provide support to the new businesses that are launching in Mendota,” said Emily McConville, Economic Developer for the City of Mendota.
To further support entrepreneurs and business development, the City of Mendota provides Business Coaching Supportive Services, funded through a grant from the Illinois Farm Bureau. The program was launched in early spring of 2025. Services include
assistance with business plan development, marketing plans, website design, and succession planning. In addition to supporting businesses, there have been a series of business workshops and networking opportunities.
“We want businesses to come to Mendota and thrive,” Short said. “We want to help them think through how to make their businesses successful.”
That support extends to adding programming to the downtown area to bring people together, such as Public Night Markets and Food Truck Mania.
“We’re encouraging businesses to keep their doors open and allow people to shop with them while they’re downtown,” McConville said. “We’re trying to find ways to get people downtown and promote shop local.”
The city has received
many grants over the last year and will start to see those being implemented over the next year to add to further revitalization of the city. Grant support includes a Safe Routes to School grant that added new sidewalks at Lincoln Elementary School. Final designs for Strouss Park continue and work is expected to break ground in 2026.
In the coming year, plans for 704 Illinois Ave., that will include space for events and indoor public market as well as co-working space and conference rooms on the second floor, which can be rented by the hour, day or month at a time. Financing for the new project is through a grant from Illinois Downtown Economic Development grant. An Illinois Transportation Expansion Program will fund a 1.9 mile bike path from downtown to the lakes on the northwest side of town.

Mendota Chamber
Promoting economic development across the community, the Mendota Chamber of Commerce has created a website that is a hub of information from events, entertainment and job postings.
“We’re striving to be an information center for Mendota,” explained Sam Setchell, President and CEO of the Mendota Chamber of Commerce.
There’s always something to do and the events calendar is full of ideas from seasonal favorites to local trivia nights, pancake breakfasts and much more. The events calendar features activities in town and from the surrounding communities.
“Tourism is a big part of economic growth in Mendota. We want to bring in people to our community and have information for
local residents as well,” Setchell said.
Each year, the Mendota Chamber members and volunteers produce the Easter Hop, the Mendota
Christmas and the annual Mendota Sweet Corn Festival, which drew an estimated 40,000 visitors over the multi-day event this past year. Funds raised at the
festival stay local.
The Chamber’s gift certificate program continues to prove a popular option to support local businesses and provide a gift that recipients can use at a number of locations. Setchell said approximately $18,000 has been spent in chamber gift certificates among Mendota Chamber members. She added it’s a popular choice for gifts during the holiday season.
Chamber members enjoy great benefits including free job postings on the Mendota Chamber website, helping to reach a large audience at no cost.
“There’s no subscriptions and we’re able to get the posts up quickly, helping small businesses as well as larger industrial chamber members, too,” Setchell said.

It’s always been a nice, clean working environment, but now our areas look (above and beyond) and show we are invested in safety. It all plays a key part in the culture we want, and obviously our team members have done a very good job of keeping themselves safe and looking out for each other.”

commerce has been steady at the 143-year-old machinery maker. Despite tariff talk and an uncertain economy dominating the headlines most of the year, Black Bros. has persevered.
“At the end of the day, our business is strong and we continue to see other U.S.
manufacturing staying strong for the most part,” Carroll said. “I know job growth and that data hasn’t been great, and there is supposed to be some federal interest rate cuts coming as well to help inflation and help the consumer. But we are extremely thankful for the business we
do have. We’ll keep doing our thing and take on challenges as they come.”

Mendota Museum & Historical Society

ADM’s largest flour mill — built from the ground up in a single project — proudly resides in Mendota. The Archer Daniels Midland Flour Mill can produce more than 3 million pounds of flour per day (30,000 cwts) and employs between 40 and 50 people. Construction began in June 2017 and was completed in 2019, with production starting that September. The facility can mill spring, winter and soft wheat varieties, along with two types of whole wheat.
ADM, one of the world’s largest agricultural processors and food ingredient providers, chose Mendota for several reasons. The company already operated a grain transfer facility in the community with a rail loop initially built by Fasco Mills before ADM acquired the company in 2007. In addition, ADM had an aging facility in the Chicago area and needed a modern location to better serve its customers.
