District asks public for input Panel: Buildings inadequate for learning BY JERMAINE PIGEE jpigee@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5525
DIXON – The Dixon School District wants public input in the process of developing a long-range facilities plan. “Ultimately, the board would like to hear some community support, and they want help and guidance on what needs to be done,” said Michael Juenger, superintendent of the district.
A 14-member strategic planning task force, made up of residents and district staff, recently reviewed the district buildings. The panel determined that the buildings were inadequate for 21st-century learning, in regard to safety and security, compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and when it comes to athletic and performing arts facilities.
“When this is done, there should be a roadmap that future boards can follow that defines what this community wants and will support,” Juenger said. “We have to make sure we maintain our buildings and keep them safe for students. “The idea of doing nothing is not a good plan.” INPUT CONTINUED ON A4
Give your input Members of the community are invited to give their input on the Dixon School District’s long-term facilities plan. The first community meeting will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Dixon High School cafeteria, 300 Lincoln Statue Drive. Visit plandixonschools.info for more information on the plan.

STERLING – Plans are underway to transform the crumbling tower of the Lawrence Building into a 20-unit apartment complex. Sterling Today is partnering with the Rock Island Economic Growth Corporation to pursue the renovation project at an estimated cost of $5 million. The regional economic development group has worked to put financing together for many downtown renovation projects. The money for the Lawrence Building project would likely come from two main sources. “A major portion would come from private investors and tax credits, because we’re generating rental income,” Sterling City Manager Scott Shumard said. A special council meeting was held Wednesday to expedite the process. The council, by a 5-0 vote, gave its approval to borrow $50,000 from the city’s attorney general’s mortgage settlement funds to use for preliminary costs until the economic development group is able to put the funding together.
