‘This is a stresser’ Officials lament latest wave of new rules BY JERMAINE PIGEE jpigee@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5525

STERLING – School officials in Illinois started the school year with more than two dozen new requirements from state lawmakers that are not funded. According to state records, schools in Illinois must comply with more than 24 new laws this year. The new rules include training students how to use automatic external defibrillators and practicing how to evacuate

The additional requirements are down slightly from the average of 27 new rules imposed on districts each year since 2007. The laws, known as mandates, are being left in the hands of already-cash-hungry school districts.

Local school officials are not thrilled with having to do more with no additional funding. “We are having a difficult time as it is funding the things that are priorities for us,” said Tad Everett, superintendent of the Sterling School District. Mandates put on the books in recent years include requiring school districts to accept miniature horses as service animals for certain disabled children. STRESSER CONTINUED ON A3
