There’s no excuse for staying home: It’s going to be a crazy fun weekend in the Sauk Valley. There will be Fiesta Days activities and riverfront runs in the Twin Cities, an anniversary concert at Sauk Valley Community College and the monthly Second Saturdays event in Dixon, and a fundraiser for a proposed dog park in Sterling, among several other events. Here’s the rundown:
Bridge the Community The Bridge the Community 5K and 10K and Kids Bridge Dash, runs to raise money to develop both sides of the Rock River, returns for its second year Saturday. Organizers bill it as the only event in the Sauk Valley area that offers a 5K and 10K option. The courses run along the Rock River in Sterling and Rock Falls, and cross the river twice. The Bridge Dash for kids 12 and younger begins at 8:30 a.m. with a fun run across the First Avenue Bridge. ROLLING CONTINUED ON A9

Trip ‘brought some tears’ More than 130 attend annual salute to veterans BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521
MORRISON – On a perfect, not-quite-autumn day in Rockwood State Park, Eugene and Jim Field, both Navy veterans, sat next to each other at a park table. They’d driven out from Fulton on Sunday for the third annual picnic for Honor Flight veterans, sponsored by the Whiteside County Honor Flight Committee. The brothers were two of more than 130 people who showed up for the afternoon

of friends, family, and food at the pavilion by the lake. There, veterans got the chance to reminisce about their trips and their service. Eugene, 84, went on the Honor Flight in 2012. It was the first time he’d ever been to Washington D.C., and, he said it was the most expertly organized trip he’d ever been on in his life. “It brought some tears,” he said. His brother, Jim, 93, went a few years earlier. Eugene served during the Korean War. Jim served dur-

ing World War II and was, in fact, part of the invasion of Normandy. “Big day,” Eugene said. “We were very lucky to serve and to get out,” Jim said. “It’s something that, when you did it, you wondered why you did it. But after, you wouldn’t give it up for anything.” After Eugene returned home from the trip, he made a scrapbook of it, and he thinks of it often. “Beautiful trip,” he said.
