WEEKEND ENTERPRISE | BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Celebrating black leaders of the Sauk Valley Philip Marruffo/pmarruffo@saukvalley.com

Isaac Mercer, 88, of Dixon, a veteran of the Korean War, came home from the conflict with a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, awarded for his heroism in hand-to-hand combat. “I was just doing my job,” says Mercer, whose rose to the rank of Army infantry sergeant almost immediately after arriving overseas.

F

our African-Americans, only one of them still with us, have helped shape the Sauk Valley as we know it today. They were activists – not just for blacks, or even minorities, but for anyone who needed a stepping stone on which to stand. They were community leaders whose passion manifested itself on county boards, in the military, and in local hospitals. They’re remembered for their senses of humor, and the good

humor they kept in the face of opposition. Some of our local communities were once visibly segregated. Boys clubs and whites-only groups were not uncommon. Today, the Sauk Valley is a proud melting pot, in which great minds, no matter what race, gender, or socio-economic background, may work together toward a greater good. Here’s a reflection of four figures who made such an environment possible.

Former mayor, 77, dies Burke served at city’s helm for 16 years BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5535 @KathleenSchul10

DIXON – Jim Burke, the man at the city’s helm during what has been called the biggest municipal theft in U.S. history, died at 8:35 Friday morning at his home, the Lee County coroner’s office confirmed. Burke, who had been diagnosed with cancer, was 77. A cause of death was not available. Burke, with the help of City Clerk Kathe Swanson, was the first to alert the FBI of his suspicions about former city Comptroller Rita Crundwell, who was convicted in 2013 of federal wire fraud for diverting more than $53 million in city funds into her own bank account over a period of about 20 years. STERLING – Advancement was Bessie Pennington’s business, and business was good. She was a champion for anyone in need – blacks, Hispanics, whites, women, the poor, and the downtrodden. The founder of the Sterling-Rock Falls chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People died Dec. 5, 1989, at age 76, after a dialysis treatment for kidney issues that stemmed from a long battle with diabetes.

DIXON – George Reid had a lot of titles: soldier, activist, prize fighter, and coach, to name a few. But one of his favorites was “Papa George,” a nickname his grandchildren gave him. “Papa George” served in the United States Army Special Services during World War II. He was a prize fighter from 1935 to 1942 and a Golden Gloves trainer in Dixon for 10 years. A former boxer in New York City, Reid came to Dixon in 1946.

DIXON – If you need reminding of the mark Winston “Wink” McReynolds left in Dixon, take a spin down Washington Avenue. Those high-rise apartments? They’re named after him. McReynolds, a former president of the local NAACP, also served as vice chairman of the Lee County Board and was a member of the Lee County Housing Authority for many years. He died in 1976, at age 72.

DIXON – Longtime Dixon native Isaac “Ike” Mercer definitely has the respect of his peers, and his constituents. “I think they would vote him on the board if he was dead,” said fellow Lee County Board member Marvin Williams. “That is how well he is liked on the board and liked in Dixon.” Mercer, 88, is among three African-Americans who have left their mark on Dixon, a once-segregated community.

Construction on the Green River wind energy project was slated to begin in the spring, but the chances of that happening are slim. Work on the wind farm planned in Lee and Whiteside counties started 7 years ago. That project, which started with Mainstream Renewable Energy but has been owned by Geronimo Energy since December 2013, has been beset by delays that include a lawsuit and a state law passed last summer that has held up the permitting process on the local level.
