The second half of a thrilling 2025 MLB regular season continues as the surging Seattle Mariners look to wrap up their four-game series against the red-hot New York Mets Sunday, Aug. 17, at Citi Field in New York City. First pitch airs live on ESPN.
Entering the series with a record of 57-50 (at press time), Seattle sits firmly in second place, just a few games behind the playoff contending Houston Astros — in what has been an incredibly competitive American League West division. Offensively, the Mariners have had some incredible success this year, making their offence one of their most deadly assets.
Catcher Cal Raleigh continues to anchor the offence, putting up 41 home runs, 87 RBIs and an OPS of .981 (at press time), with consistent production from the likes of Julio Rodriguez (18 home runs) and J.P. Crawford (.265 batting average).
After showing flashes of promise last season, Oakland, California, native Bryan Woo has taken significant steps in only his second full season in the MLB. Woo holds an 8-5 won-lost record (at press time) with an impressive 2.92 ERA and
121 strikeouts while maintaining consistency throughout, completing at least six innings in all of his starts, something the Mariners will be leaning on against a strong Mets offence.
The Mets currently sit atop the National League East (62-46), with their offence ranking among the league’s best this season. Boasting a deep lineup led by sluggers Pete Alonso (22 home runs, 81 RBIs) and Juan Soto (25 home runs, 62 RBIs), the Mets will look to establish their game early on, in what has been a historic breakout 2025 campaign for them.

As famously sung by great American singer/songwriter Bob Dylan: “The times they are a-changin’.” And while this sentiment continues to be both true and relevant to the world in which we live some 61 years after the song’s release, the same is also true for another (fictional) world: the DC Universe.
When American filmmaker James Gunn and British producer Peter Safran (both of “Superman,” 2025) took over as co-chiefs of DC Studios in 2023, they announced that the existing DC Extended Universe would be abandoned in favor of a more streamlined sequence of reboots and reimaginings. Thankfully for fans of the John Cena (“Bumblebee,” 2018) character Peacemaker, the patriot — like DC mainstays Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman — has made the cut. With this in mind, the muscly, no-nonsense hero is back this month in a big way, more than three years after his titular series premiered Jan. 13, 2022.
“Peacemaker” Season 2 premieres Thursday, Aug. 21, on HBO Max, with episodes releasing weekly until the series’ mid-October finale.
As originally described by HBO Max (formerly Max) via its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, “’Peacemaker’ follows the explosive escapades of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of James Gunn’s 2021 film ‘The Suicide Squad’ — a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.”
Now, after Peacemaker, aka Christopher Smith, has recovered from his inju-
ries and waged his own brand of justice for eight episodes straight in Season 1, he “discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be” in the second season.
But as HBO Max press reports, “this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.”
As for Cena’s “Peacemaker” co-stars this season, Danielle Brooks (“Orange Is the New Black”) returns as Leota Adebayo, the “daughter of Suicide Squad founder and A.R.G.U.S. leader Amanda Waller” (Viola Davis, “How to Get Away With Murder”), along with fan favorites Freddie Stroma (“Pitch Perfect,” 2012) as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland (“Brightburn,” 2019) as Agent Emilia Harcourt and Steve Agee (“New Girl”) as Agent John Economos.
Variety also confirmed that Peacemaker’s racist father, August “Auggie” Smith, aka White Dragon, will return in the form of “The Faculty” (1998) and “Reacher” actor Robert Patrick, who originated the despicable role in the Season 1. Naturally, Peacemaker’s trusty avian sidekick Eagly, a digitally created eagle voiced by Dee Bradley Baker (“American Dad!”), also returns for Season 2.
Additions to the series cast include Tim Meadows (“Mean Girls,” 2004), Sol Rodriguez (“Devious Maids”) and Purge franchise star Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., who has more than likely come to settle the score with Peacemaker (spoilers for 2021’s “The Suicide Squad”), who killed his son, Rick Flag Jr. (Joel
Frank Grillo in “Peacemaker”
Kinnaman, “For All Mankind”), in Gunn’s canon-establishing “Squad” film. Don’t miss the premiere of “Peacemaker” Season 2 when it comes to HBO Max Thursday, Aug. 21. And for those who simply cannot get enough of the jingoist mercenary, “Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with James Gunn” launched July 24. Listen and subscribe on YouTube or your favorite podcast platform.

OF FIRE COUNTRY ON CBS/PARAMOUNT+
Q: When “Sheriff Country” premieres, will Max Thieriot make crossover appearances from “Fire Country”?
A: That is pretty much definite, the two series being as closely linked as they are, with “Sheriff” having been spun off from “Fire” via a backdoor pilot episode that ran on the latter CBS and Paramount+ show. As he has been on “Fire,” Thieriot is a creator and executive producer of “Sheriff,” so he has a vested interest in making sure the new show gets a successful launch; bringing his Bode Leone character over would be one way to help ensure that.
With that being said, it can be a challenge to make that happen, especially in terms of scheduling. Thieriot obviously is pivotal to “Fire Country,” which has its own episodes to turn out on a certain timeline, so springing him to accommodate “Sheriff Country” is likely to be a balancing act. However, all involved realize what his participation could mean in terms of drawing viewers to the new drama, so plenty of thought must be going into trying to make that happen as often as possible (at least for the start).
With a cast led by Morena Baccarin (“Gotham”) as law enforcer Mickey Fox — the stepsister of “Fire Country’s” Sharon Leone, Bode’s fire-chief mother played by Diane Farr (“Numb3rs”) — “Sheriff Country” is slated to debut Oct. 17 on CBS.
On that night, it will follow the fourth-season premiere of “Fire Country” (and don’t be surprised to see a shared story on the two series then), but the programs will trade those Friday slots effective Oct. 24. Their adjacency on that night’s schedule also might help with planning crossover stories, much as it has worked with executive producer Dick Wolf’s “Chicago” shows Wednesdays on NBC.
The final round of this tourney airs live from the rolling greens at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. After three days of impressive play, the $20 million purse will be awarded to the best of the best, celebrating 40 years of excellence.

Q: Why don’t I hear about Sarah Michelle Gellar much anymore? Is she retired?
A: You’re about to hear a lot more about Sarah Michelle Gellar (“I Know What You Did Last Summer,” 1997), and the reason why might also be the reason you haven’t heard much from her in a while.
Gellar was a teen star in the ‘90s, and that status culminated with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” the WB (later CW) action series on which she played the titular scourge of the vampire community.
“Buffy” ended in 2003, and though she’s appeared in literally dozens of projects since then, none of them caught on to the same degree.
But her new project stands a great

chance of recapturing that old “Buffy” magic, because it’s ... more “Buffy.” She has a leading role (it’s still not clear if it’s “the” lead role) in a new reboot series that’s being kept so secret that we don’t even know the official title yet.
What we know is that it’s currently in production, and that Gellar will return as Buffy, but this time she’ll be guiding a new Slayer (in the show’s universe, that’s the kind of title that gets capitalized).
A lot of this we know because Gellar shared a photo on her Instagram account from the first table read in July.
It will air on the Hulu streaming service, and it’s currently slated for release sometime next year; that timing checks out if they’re just doing the table read now.

Q: I loved Drew Carey in Season 3 of “The Masked Singer.” Has he done any other singing gigs?
A: Drew Carey (“The Drew Carey Show”) would be the first to say that singing isn’t his strong suit. However, he also happily admits that he’ll go a long way for a laugh.
Asked why he agreed to do “The Masked Singer,” he said on air, “The show looked like a lot of fun and I like having a goof and a lot of laughs, that’s why.”
The few other times he’s sung on screen, it was in the same spirit, but one project was quite different.
He played the title role in the Disney madefor-TV movie “Geppetto” (2000), a spinoff of the classic “Pinocchio” (1940) but following his toymaker creator/father. “Geppetto” was the kind of lavish, song-and-dance fantasy that Disney is famous for — and that put a lot of pressure on Carey.
He said in an interview at the time that he was intrigued by the story when the producers approached him, but he doubted his ability to do the singing. But when Oscar-winning composer Stephen Schwartz (“The Prince of Egypt,” 1998) sang one of the original songs for him, it literally brought him to tears, and he was in.
As I said, his other singing forays were about getting laughs instead of tears.

Before it makes its debut on National Geographic, join MCU star Chris Hemsworth (“Thor,” 2011) as he continues his exploration of health, wellness and human potential during Season 2 of “Limitless with Chris Hemsworth,” titled “Limitless: Live Better Now,” now available to stream on Disney+.
Following a highly successful first season that saw Hemsworth inspiring others to join in on his journey of healthy mission, this second installment will see the A-list actor tackling, per the series’ description, “a series of physical and mental obstacles that people across the world face daily: mental agility, pain, burnout and interpersonal connection.”
To accomplish this seemingly insurmountable task, Hemsworth begins a global journey in search of the latest scientific knowledge on health and aging, gaining access to some of the world’s best-kept secrets on how to live a longer life through conversations with experts, mentors, spiritual leaders, cognitive specialists and MMA fighters, each of whom share their own perspectives on the matter.
Filmed over two years and with stops made in six countries, “Live Better Now” sees Hemsworth pushing himself further than ever before — by tackling icy alpine inclines, taking on military training in South Korea, scaling 600foot walls and even learning how to play the drums for a life-changing performance alongside superstar Ed Sheeran (“Thinking Out Loud”).
BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT
“Making this series has been a life-changing journey,” says Hemsworth, speaking with The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve discovered so much about my own health, resilience and what it really means to live well. I hope this next chapter inspires audiences to step outside their comfort zones and embrace challenges, because the impact it’s had on my life has been truly profound.”
With Tom Watt-Smith (“Stolen: Catching the Art Thieves”), Peter Lovering (“Unmasking Jihadi John: Anatomy of a Terrorist,” 2019), Arif Nurmohamed (“The World According to Jeff Goldblum”), Jane Root (“Secrets Declassified with David Duchovny”), Ruth Shurman (“Surgeons: At the Edge of Life”), Ari Handel (“Black Swan,” 2010), Ben Grayson (“Extraction,” 2020) and Darren Aronofsky (“The Whale,” 2022) acting as executive producers, the awe-inspiring “Limitless: Live Better Now” is now streaming on Disney+.
