STERLING – After a long wait between liquor and gambling licenses, the Suzi’s Video Poker & Slots is open in Sterling, and one of the next planned sites is in Dixon. The city issued owner Suzi McAfoos a liquor license June 15, but the Illinois Gaming Board has been inundated with video gambling license applications. Video gambling made its debut statewide in October 2012, 3 years after it received legislative approval. McAfoos opened Wednesday after her gambling license for the Sterling parlor at 3219 E. Lincolnway was approved at the state gaming commission’s Jan. 28 meeting. The only other area video gambling license approved at the meeting was for Legends Bar & Grill in Erie.

STERLING – With one word, Emiliano Martinez declared Male Interaction Week in the Head Start program at Wallace School a success. “He felt comfortable,” the 5-year-old said about Nero, a German shepherd K-9 officer with the Rock Falls Police Department. Comfortable is exactly how the federally funded program wants its kids to feel around men who fill positive roles in the community. “Sometimes, our kids don’t have positive role models in their lives,” said Carisa Valdez, a family community service worker with the program.

Rock Falls’ Italian heritage
ROCK FALLS – The history of the Italian-American community in Rock Falls will be the topic of the Sterling-Rock Falls Historical Society meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Rock Falls Community Building, 601 W. 10th St. The story of six families will be discussed, including where they came from and how they ended up in the area. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served.

Four Sauk Valley high school teams are playing for girls basketball regional championships tonight. Erie and Eastland play at 7 p.m. in Erie. The winner advances to the Eastland Sectional. AFC takes on Serena at 7 p.m. in the Ashton Regional championship, with the winner advancing to the Serena Sectional. And Amboy is hoping for some home cooking when it hosts Wethersfield in the regional title game in its own gym. The winner also advances to the Serena Sectional.
