The cost of the work is estimated at $34,600. The Lawrence Building is in the existing Central Business District TIF, but that TIF near the library expires in 2017. An amendment

STERLING – The city has started the process of setting up a new TIF district to aid in the Lawrence Lofts project, and other potential redevelopment efforts in the East Third Street area. The Sterling City Council gave
must be drawn up to remove it from that TIF before it can become part of the new one. Shumard said development interest has been expressed in other buildings near the courthouse, so it just made sense to do the new TIF for a 4-block area near East Third Street. “The Lawrence project needed a 23-year TIF, and because it’s such a small building and the cost
would be the same, we might as well bring in the other buildings,” Shumard said. Shumard said the new TIF is deemed necessary by Rock Island Growth Corporation to go forward with the Lawrence Lofts project planned on the floors above the county courthouse at 101 E. Third St.

When Amboy student Justin Hart won the 50/50 raffle Thursday at the Newman vs. Amboy basketball game, the teen didn’t think twice about donating the money back to the Hopkins family of Rock Falls, who lost five of seven members in a house fire Wednesday.

AMBOY – When, without hesitation, 16-year-old Justin Hart donated $230 in 50/50 raffle winnings to the grieving Hopkins family, he continued to fulfill his father’s legacy. He might not be able to relate to the sort of heartache siblings John and Rebecca Hopkins are going through, after a fire claimed the lives of all of their immediate family members, their pets and their house
Wednesday in Rock Falls. But he did watch his father, Gary Hart, fight colon cancer for 6 years. The former Lee County deputy lost that fight when his boy was 7. During and after that heavyweight bout, Sauk Valley communities rallied to the Harts’ aid with fundraisers and support. “They helped us in a tough time, and I knew I had an opportunity to give back to the community,” said Justin, a sophomore at Amboy High School. STERLING – Sterling Police Chief Ron Potthoff joined the department in 1973 as a newly minted college graduate, excited because he finally had landed a job. “You can’t do much with a bachelor’s degree in psychology,” he said with a chuckle, adding that he stuck with police work to see where it would lead. He worked undercover, remembering the 1960s Ron hit TV shows “AdamPotthoff 12” and “Dragnet” that inspired him and drew him to the profession. He always admired the officers. A police-spec Pontiac LeMans, a powerful 1970s-era law enforcement cruiser, sweetened the deal, Potthoff said with a smile. POTTHOFF CONTINUED ON A5

ROCK FALLS – The city’s newest gambling parlor puts a new slant on slots. Dave Cochran and Valerie Howes have teamed up to give slots players and coffee aficionados a different experience. Sammy’s Slots & Video Poker and Higher Grounds Mobile Cafe and Drive-Thru Cafe are two separate businesses, but the owners have

brought them together under one roof. They opened Monday at 606 12th Ave., next to DMG Laundry. “We have two separate identities, but it made a lot of sense to co-exist in the same space, so we’ll see how it goes,” Cochran said. Cochran and wife Deanna, owners of Cochran’s Pub in Sterling, will run the slots business, while Howes is expanding her coffee business, after drawing a loyal following with her mobile cafe. “Val works with a premium coffee

product, and we have a facility with a drive-in window,” Cochran said. Everyone liked the location, and there is room to grow in the event either owner wants to put in a full kitchen for expanded food offerings. “We liked that it’s by a laundromat, and people can come in here while they’re waiting, and it’s also nice that it’s near Angelo’s,” Cochran said. “The big thing, though, is that we’re putting people in a comfortable environment.”
