ILLINOIS | RECALL ELECTIONS

Voters don’t get many do-overs Police shootings prompt lawmaker to push expanding state law regarding recalls of elected officials CHICAGO (AP) – The furor over recent Chicago police shootings has legislators considering whether voters should be allowed to recall Mayor Rahm Emanuel or future officials who hold his post. Illinois state law currently

addresses only the recall of a governor, a provision voters approved in 2010 after former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested and impeached. Now, state Rep. La Shawn Ford, a Chicago Democrat, wants voters to also have the power to

remove the mayor of the country’s third-largest city. In light of the unrest in the city, Ford said, “It’s clearly the right thing to have on the books.” But what about mayors in other Illinois cities? What about state lawmakers? How does Illi-

nois compare to other states when it comes to recalls? Here’s a closer look at those questions and the particulars of Ford’s measure.

Ford’s proposal

on Dec. 9, the day Emanuel addressed the Chicago City Council and apologized for the death of Laquan McDonald, a black teenager who was shot 16 times by a white police officer in October 2014.

Ashley Kurzrock and Brandon De Waele of Dixon look at their baby girl, Lillian Jo De Waele, on Sunday morning at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. Lillian was born at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and was the first baby born at the hospital for 2016.

What goes down must come up Going down is the fun part. Coming up? Well, not so much. Hunter, 6, (left) and his brother, Easton Ortgiesen, 4, both from Dixon, trudge up the hill Saturday after zipping down on a sled at the Edgewood Golf Club in Polo during the course’s sledding event. As it has in the past, the club opened up the slopes to the young and young at heart who wanted to slip slide away. The slopes will be open again from noon to 4 p.m. today. The sledding’s free, while inside there will be hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, hot chocolate and other comfort food for sale, and people can warm up by the fireplace. Those sledding need to check in at the clubhouse, and adult supervision is required for pre-teens and young teens. Call 815-946-3636 for more information, or to check for upcoming sledding days.

STERLING – Lillian Jo De Waele just couldn’t wait to be born. Instead of arriving on her due date of Jan. 25, Lillian Jo was welcomed into the world by Ashley Kurzrock, 22, and her boyfriend of 4 years, Brandon De Waele, 25, at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 2 at CGH Medical Center. Because of her rush to see the world, Lillian Jo’s early debut made her the first baby born in Whiteside Count in 2016. BABY CONTINUED ON A5

Labels meet their match: World trade Organization’s rulings push Congress to ditch meat labeling WASHINGTON (AP) – It’s now harder to find out where your beef or pork was born, raised and slaughtered. After more than a decade of wrangling, Congress repealed a labeling law last month that required retailers to include the animal’s country of origin on packages of red meat. It’s a major victory for the meat industry, which had fought the law in Congress and the courts since the early 2000s.
