‘You can feel the real America here’ BY BRENDEN WEST

DIXON – Tourism – locally and statewide – is on the rise. There’s a trickle effect to that, says Illinois Director of Tourism Cory Jobe. Jobe, who visited the area Thursday, ahead of that night’s Blackhawk Waterways Convention and Visitors Bureau’s annual dinner in Oregon, said the rise in visitors will reflect an improved quality of life locally. Last month, the CVB reported 2014 regional tourism-related expenditures were $159.7 million, up 6.6 percent from 2013. That contributed to the $36.3 billion garnered statewide, a 3.5 percent increase over the same span. “Tourism really touches a lot of lives in the community,” Jobe said during a tour through Dixon with CVB Director Diane

Bausman, during which they visited the riverfront, Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home and other unique aspects of the city. “You can feel the real America here,” Jobe said. “It has such a different face all across the state. We really do have a lot of things [in Illinois] to offer a visitor.” Tourism expenditures are measured by dollars spent by travelers on lodging, food, transportation, retail and entertainment. Statistics from the Illinois Office of Tourism show those expenditures resulted in a 4.93 percent increase in the now $25.34 million local tourism-related payroll, supporting more than 1,000 local jobs in Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties. Tax receipts also rose in the region – 9 percent in state travel spending taxes and 5.76 percent in

local taxes. The key to all of these successes, Jobe said, was encouraging collaboration between multiple agencies. He used Blackhawk Waterways as an example: The four counties on their own are “strong,” but combined they possess even greater power. “Communities that are standing on their own have a punch, but not as much of a punch,” Jobe said. “The collaborative efforts are critical, especially when we’re in an age where resources are tight.” Bausman said local collaboration is one reason why Blackhawk Waterways has excelled. “Our main goal is to attract more and more people to our region,” she said. “Everything we do is collaboration. We promote our region as a destination. We want

But Jobe said all parts of Illinois are seeing a benefit from

tourism dollars. The approach of the visitor has changed. Jobe said travelers want to see America, not Disney World. He is familiar with the progress made in Dixon and other local communities, and he looks forward to seeing the quality of life

improvements that will result from the local adherence to sound tourism practices. “People want to come explore, touch, feel, experience the real America,” Jobe said. “Where else better than the state of Illinois?”
