Josh Charles stars in “Best Medicine”

Prescriptive comedy Boston doctor Martin Best (Josh Charles, “The Good Wife”) moves to a quaint coastal town in “Best Medicine,” premiering Tuesday, Jan. 6, on Fox. Although he is an attentive physician, Best’s less-than-winning personality makes him a maligned figure in the village he now calls home. But as the townsfolk get to know his quirks and eccentricities, Best finds a way to make himself useful and even forge some connections along the way.

hange is hard to navigate on the best of days, but big, sudden life adjustments have a way of bringing one’s worst fears bubbling to the surface.

Unfortunately for Dr. Martin Best (Josh Charles, “The Good Wife”), the main character in Fox’s newest one-hour comedy series “Best Medicine,” the Massachusetts-based medical practitioner has a lot of fears to face.

“Best Medicine” premieres Tuesday, Jan. 6, on Fox. Based on hit British series “Doc Martin,” starring Martin Clunes (“Men Behaving Badly”) as titular doctor Martin Ellingham, “Best Medicine” follows an Americanized version of the same plotline. Whereas Ellingham moved from the bustling hub of London to the fictional coastal Cornish village of Portwenn in “Doc Martin,” “Best Medicine” sees Best, a successful Boston doctor in his own right, make an unexpected move to the small seaside town where he vacationed as a child. Although the move itself is hard enough for Best to adapt to, the good doctor has faults that makes it hard for others to accept him in return, regardless of the fact that he is their village’s only doctor.

“Martin’s blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, and he quickly alienates the town, even though he’s all they’ve got,” reads the logline per CTV, which will air the series in Canada. “Although Martin can expertly address any medical ailment or mystery in this idiosyncratic town, he’s really just desperate to be left the hell alone. Instead, he keeps getting dragged right smack into the middle of their personal chaos, feuds and fantasies.”

Best is played by Josh Charles, who is known to many for his twice Emmy-nominated portrayal of Will Gardner in the CBS legal/political drama “The Good Wife” as well as for roles such as Cmdr. Gabriel Wharton in Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” and teenage student Knox Overstreet in the 1989 Robin Williams (“Mrs. Doubtfire,” 1993) classic “Dead Poets Society.”

Joining Charles on screen in “Best Medicine” are Josh Segarra (“Abbott Elementary”) as the town’s sheriff, Mark Mylow; Abigail Spencer (“Mad Men”) as Louisa Glasson, a sweet, well-mannered schoolteacher and possible future love interest for Best; Annie Potts (“Young Sheldon”) as Best’s estranged Aunt Joan, “who is a strong, sturdy, lobster woman who still goes out every day on her boat, and no one better tell her to stop if they know what’s good for them” (per TVInsider); and the mononymous Cree (“Big Sky”) as Elaine, an

There is also another, very special character in “Best Medicine,” who will certainly look familiar to viewers of the original British series. Clunes, also known as Doc Martin himself, appears in the Fox series as Best’s father and fellow doctor Robert Best.

“Robert is an accomplished but headstrong gastroenterologist whose demeanor makes Martin’s prickly bedside manner seem warm by comparison,” writes The Hollywood Reporter writer Rick Porter in an Oct. 13 article. “He arrives in the New England town where Martin has moved after giving up his surgical career in Boston and puts everyone on edge, including his estranged sister and Martin’s aunt.”

“But underneath his snobby, stone-cold exterior,” the character description reads, “Robert is hiding a few secrets of his own that could turn Martin’s new life upside down and force him to confront his past.”

Clunes’ character in “Best Medicine” is not a far cry from that of Doc Martin, who was also

portrayed as curt, brash and emotionally stunted — albeit an excellent doctor — throughout all 10 seasons of the show. Although the original ITV series ended on Christmas Day 2022 after 18 years on the air, Fox is delighted to be taking up the mantle in some way by paying homage to a beloved series abroad.

“The story of ‘Doc Martin’ has resonated worldwide with its humanity, originality and humor, and with ‘Best Medicine’ coming to Fox, that eccentricity gets a small-town America spin, complete with idyllic charm and absurdity,” Michael Thorn, Fox Television Network president, said in a statement. “[Executive producers] Liz [Tuccillo (“Sex and the City”)], Mark [Crowdy (“Saving Grace,” 2000)], Philippa [Braithwaite (“Sliding Doors,” 1998)], Ben [Silverman (“The Office”)] and Rodney [Ferrell (“Stick”)] have done a terrific job adapting this signature character for the Fox audience, especially in casting the terrifically talented Josh Charles as our lead.”

Both Crowdy and Braithwaite join “Best Medicine” having worked on “Doc Martin” in the past. Meanwhile, Tuccillo, who co-wrote and adapted the book “He’s Just Not That Into You”

for its 2009 film version, helms the series adaptation of the original British series for American audiences.

“Best Medicine” also stars Cindy De La Cruz (“What Doesn’t Float,” 2023), Didi Conn (“Grease,” 1978), Clea Lewis (“American Rust”), Jason Veasey (“Only Murders in the Building”), John DiMaggio (“Perry Mason”), Carter Shimp (“The Holdovers,” 2023), Patch Darragh (“Succession”), Michael Potts (“True Detective”), Ava Bodnar (“I Need Your Love,” 2024), Marita de Lara (“General Hospital”), Charlotte Hacke (“The American Revolution”) and Alana Raquel Bowers (“Dr. Death”), as well as new talent Leah Janae Thomas and Wattson the dog.

Bader and Blyth star in Netflix’s ‘People We Meet on Vacation’

est friends Poppy Wright and Alex Nilsen have perfected the art of the annual escape — one plane ticket, one rental car and zero common sense required. But in Netflix’s “People We Meet on Vacation,” arriving on the streamer Friday, Jan. 9, their tradition of a breezy summer vacation runs into one obstacle they can’t quite outrun: their feelings for each other.

Based on Emily Henry’s 2021 best-selling novel, “People We Meet on Vacation” brings to life a story of love, friendship and the blurry line between the two. Emily Bader (“My Lady Jane”) stars as Poppy, a free-spirited traveler who embraces life on a whim, while Tom Blyth (“The Gilded Age”) plays Alex, a mild-mannered introvert who clings to a routine that’s in neat, colorcoded order.

The film, directed by Brett Haley (“All the Bright Places,” 2020), marks the first of Henry’s novels to hit the big screen, with Haley describing Bader and Blyth’s on-screen chemistry as “electric” in an interview with Tudum.

“They capture that opposites-attract dynamic in a way that feels effortless and true,” Haley said, adding that the movie “doesn’t just tell a love story” but it “makes you feel like you’ve gone on vacation right alongside Poppy and Alex,” stumbling along with them through every taxi ride, unexpected detour and late-night confession.

The film, offering glimpses of past and present, shows a friendship cemented through weeklong summer vacations, journeying from their small town in Ohio to the cobblestone streets of Barcelona and the jazzy corners of New Orleans. For most of the year, they live apart: Poppy’s in New York chasing stories for a travel magazine, while Alex lives a quiet life in their hometown working as an English teacher. Now, though, the energy between them is shifting and their latest trip has them questioning if they are more than just friends.

Netflix dropped the first teaser for the film in September 2025, set to Robyn’s “Hang With Me.” The clip shows Poppy drifting through a bustling airport when her suitcase finally hits the carousel, absorbed in the music humming through her headphones as she’s cheerfully belting along much louder than she realizes — only for her to stop mid-song when she locks eyes with Alex, who is watching from across the terminal.

A montage of their adventures follows, including Poppy in glittery makeup and a neon blue wig as Alex carries her up a hill; and later, a traveler asking, “Who wants to go skinny-dipping?” to which Alex says with a horrified expression, “Alex does not.” With beers in hand, Poppy suggests

At one point, the two nearly share a kiss, before Alex pulls back, asking, “What am I to you?” It’s clear from the first few frames that these two are trouble in the most endearing way.

Joining Bader and Blyth on their adventure is an ensemble cast that includes Sarah Catherine Hook (“The White Lotus”) as Sarah, Alex’s onagain, off-again girlfriend; Alice Lee (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) as Rachel, Poppy’s social media influencer best friend; Jameela Jamil (“The Good Place”) as Poppy’s boss, Swapna; Molly Shannon (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Alan Ruck (“Succession”) as Poppy’s parents, Wanda and Jimmy; and Lucien Laviscount (“Emily in Paris”), Miles Heizer (“Love, Simon,” 2018) and Lukas Gage (“The White Lotus”) as Trey, David and Buck, respectively.

For those who are following Poppy and Alex through the pages of Henry’s work, the adaptation, according to Haley, doesn’t steer far from Henry’s novel.

“Their love story is the spine of the book, and it had to be the spine of the film,” Haley said. “My hope is that fans of the book see the care we put into bringing Poppy and Alex to life on screen, and that new audiences fall for them just as deeply.”

An executive producer of the film, Henry couldn’t be happier with it, saying she’s confident her readers “are going to completely fall in love” with how Bader and Blyth bring their characters to life on the screen.

“I watched their chemistry read four times in 12 hours, and I loved it more every single time,” Henry said in an interview with Tudum. “The very first time I was laughing out loud, and I got so emotional by the end.”

Behind the scenes, Ted Gidlow (“A Man in Full”) and Laura Quicksilver (“My Oxford Year,” 2025) serve alongside Henry as executive producers, with the screenplay written by Amos Vernon (“Adam Ruins Everything”), Wyck Godfrey (“The Maze Runner,” 2014), Marty Bowen (“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” 2010) and Yulin Kuang (“I Ship It”). Kuang is also reportedly attached to write and direct the adaptation of Henry’s “Beach Read,” though Netflix has yet to announce a release date.

Seeing 12 teams of sibling duos battling to win a lifechanging $25,000 prize, the all-new series “Baking Champions: Next Gen” makes its debut on Food Network Monday, Jan. 5, with episodes streaming the next day on HBO Max and Discovery+.

Hosted by Duff Goldman (“Kids Baking Championship”) and Kardea Brown (“Delicious Miss Brown”) — who also act as the series’ judges — this “wholesome and delightful confec-

tionary competition” (per Food Network) sees siblings aged 8-14 collaborating in the kitchen, as they take on tricky challenges such as “breakfast dessert imposters,” “cream puff friendship bracelets” and “animated cakes,” as they utilize their culinary and communication skills, trying to make it to the next round of competition.

Food Network has shared that in the “super-sized” series premiere, “Duff Goldman and Kardea Brown will put the teams through two rounds of skills challenges to assess which 10 teams will move on and which two teams will be eliminated before the competition even starts. In the first skills test, the nervous teams put up a dozen of their best cupcakes. For the second skills

test, the teams must create a pie from scratch good enough to prove they have what it takes to compete.”

Premiering Thursday, Jan.8, Netflix’s new series “His & Hers” follows Anna (Tessa Thompson, “Passing,” 2021) as she lives in isolation, having abandoned her career as a news anchor and drifted from friends and family. When news of a murder surfaces in Dahlonega, the small hometown she once fled, Anna is pulled back into a world she tried to leave behind. As she digs for answers, her investigation draws the attention of Det. Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal, “Fury,” 2014), whose suspicions sharpen the closer she gets to his case. By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I was surprised to discover recently that “The Curse of Oak Island” is still going.

Catch me up: what could possibly be left to do?

A: The short and obvious answer is: find the treasure. It looks like that’s the only thing that could put an end to “The Curse of Oak Island” (the show and, presumably, the curse itself).

It continues to be a reliable ratings success for History. The premiere of its current, 13th season drew over a million viewers, making it once again the biggest show on the cable channel.

This can certainly seem surprising, based on the premise. A treasure-hunting reality show shouldn’t be capable of such longevity — surely, if you haven’t found what you’re looking for in, say, five seasons, you’d give up, right?

But that fails to account for a couple of things: the incredible, apparently genetic tenacity of the Lagina family and the fact that “The Curse of Oak Island” has become much more than a treasurehunting show.

At this point, it’s just as much a Viking-culture show, an archeology show and a documentary about modern imaging technology.

But it manages to stay true to the original premise, always tying that other stuff back to the original, tantalizing treasure.

And along the way, they’re continually finding something to give viewers a jolt of excitement.

For example, the latest season kicked off with a “stunning revelation” about a link between the Knights Templar and the treasure. (That’s from

the official teaser information, so it’s not really spoiling anything.)

Thus, maybe the key to “The Curse of Oak Island’s” longevity is that it’s letting the viewers experience the madness of treasure hunting for themselves. It starts with the promise of an incredible payoff, offers an excuse to spend time outdoors in an exotic locale and then, doles out enough tiny achievements to give a sense of progress.

Q: Is Frank Miller going to turn any of his other “Sin City” comics into movies?

A: At this point, it looks like a wrap on the cinematic life of the “Sin City” comics. The last film was 2014’s “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” which was a flop at the box office.

Creator Frank Miller (“Daredevil,” 2003) is considered one of the all-time great comic book writers. In 2005, he tried his hand at the film biz, adapting his influential crime comic “Sin City” into a movie, which he also co-directed with Rob-

ert Rodriguez (“El Mariachi,” 1992).

It was an enormous hit, earning $160 million worldwide, which was four times its budget. A sequel was inevitable, especially since he had several more “Sin City” comics to draw from.

Unfortunately, “A Dame to Kill For,” co-directed by Miller and Rodriguez, failed to even recoup its budget.

In 2017, there was talk of making a “Sin City” TV show, but nothing came of it, despite the involvement of Glen Mazzara, a hot showrunner at the time thanks to his previous work on “The Walking Dead” and “The Shield.”

And that’s been the end of it. Of course, like I said, there are still plenty more comics to adapt if Hollywood comes knocking again.

But Miller has been no less of a presence on the screen in the years since. Many of his other comics, such as the “Daredevil” stories he wrote for Marvel, are still getting adapted.

He most recently got a credit for 2024’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” for having created the Elektra character (played in the film and in previous films by “Alias” star Jennifer Garner).

Q: What’s Bridget Moynahan doing now that “Blue Bloods” is over? She was the heart of that show for me.

A: The Erin Reagan role is clearly close to Bridget Moynahan’s (“I, Robot,” 2004) heart as well, as she can’t quite seem to give it up.

When “Blue Bloods” ended in 2024, after 14 seasons and nearly 300 episodes, you’d think the

cast would want a break from it. But that has not proven to be the case.

It certainly wasn’t the case for Donnie Wahlberg (“Saw II,” 2005), who immediately launched into the lead of a spinoff, “Boston Blue,” which premiered in October.

And it wasn’t the case for Moynahan, either.

She’s not on “Boston Blue” full time, but she did show up for the premiere.

What most don’t know, though, was she then stuck around behind the scenes, directing the show’s eighth episode. She got her first taste of directing on “Blue Bloods” in 2022 and clearly liked it.

She also recently wrapped shooting on a feature film — the indie musical drama “Original Sound” (there’s no word on a release date yet).

But there’s even a “Blue Bloods” connection here since it’s being directed by Gregory Jbara (“Oppenheimer,” 2023), who played Garrett Moore on “Bloods.”

This, again, seems like an expression of love for the show and its cast, as Moynahan certainly doesn’t need help finding work.

Indeed, she was an established big-screen star before joining “Blue Bloods,” thanks to hits such as 2002’s “The Sum of All Fears” and 2004’s “I, Robot.”
