Faith students put motion program to the test, and it passes BY JERMAINE PIGEE

GRAND DETOUR – If you walk into Faith Christian School, don’t be surprised if you see students skipping, rolling on the floor, or tossing around bean bags. The students aren’t goofing off. Quite the opposite: They are trying to enhance their learning and concentration. Students have been participating in the Minds in Motion program for the past couple of months. Minds in Motion is a nationally recognized program that works to develop the sensory and motor systems of the body, which helps to improve learning and attention in the classroom. The exercises blend developmental gymnastics, balance exercises,

and complex movements through rotating stations. Activities range from full-body exercises to isolated eye movements. They include skipping, walking on balance beams, tossing bean bags, rolling on a mat, sliding across the floor and staring at three large buttons on a string. “The purpose of the program is to build strong minds,” said Linda Foster, principal at Faith Christian School. “Having these things makes your brain stronger, and it helps the students concentrate in class.” Activities at each of the 15 stations are designed to work on students’ coordination and balance. Each classroom participates in the activities once a day, and it takes

between 12 and 15 minutes to complete all stations. “We change and increase the difficulty each week,” Foster said. All kindergarten through fourth-grade students participate in the program each morning. Foster said she had seen improvements in the students’ ability to learn and concentrate in class. “Parents say their kids have done better in their academics,” Foster said. Elementary students are not the only kids who are participating in the program. Next week, fifth- through eighthgraders will take annual achievement tests, and those students will participate in the Minds in Motion program. “Studies show if stu-

dents do this before testing, they will perform better,” Foster said. Addison Freise, a fourth-grader at Faith Christian School, had no problems crossing a balance beam, which is her favorite Minds in Motion activity. Freise said the program helps her to focus in class. “I think it helps us concentrate more,” said Freise, 10. “I also really like to balance myself.” Kayla Throw, a thirdgrader, agrees. “The activities can make your body more healthy,” said Throw, 8. “It helps me concentrate, and it helps me learn more about math.”

Federal, state dollars unlikely after tornado Local donations continue as relief effort turns into long-term recovery mode BY BRETT ROWLAND

DeKALB – The road to recovery in Fairdale will likely be paved with local dollars. County and municipal officials aren’t banking on a influx of state and federal dollars to help with the cleanup and long-term recovery and rebuilding work needed. An EF4 tornado struck the unincorporated DeKalb County community April 9 killing two, injuring more than a dozen and destroying scores of homes and buildings. With cleanup work ongoing, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency is still in the process of collecting information about damages and working to determine the unmet needs of residents and local governments. Once IEMA has that information, it will be able to determine what assistance the state might be able to offer, said Patti Thompson,

spokeswoman for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. “It’s still too early,” Thompson said. “At this point, we’re continuing to collect information.” In the meantime, state agencies, such as the Illinois Department of Transportation, are assisting local governments in the affected areas. But local leaders don’t expect the kind of federal disaster assistance that helped survivors of the deadly 2013 tornado that struck Washington. After that EF4 tornado, which killed three and damaged more than 1,000 homes, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Individual Assistance Program approved more than $2.5 million in grants for residents for home repairs, rental assistance and grants to replace lost personal items. And the U.S. Small Business Administration reported that more than $18.7 million in lowinterest disaster loans had

Whiteside convictions double

Rate steady in Lee County BY CHRISTI WARREN

STERLING – Convictions in Whiteside County last year more than doubled from 2013, while they held steady in Lee County. Whiteside County had 2,386 felony, misdemeanor, and DUI convictions in 2014, up from 1,024. Lee County had 464 total convictions last year, up from 442.

Those numbers come from annual reports filed by state’s attorneys in the two counties. The larger number in Whiteside County includes traffic cases: 1,443, or more than half of the convictions. Lee County did not include those numbers. In 2014, Whiteside County convictions resulted in 164 people being sent to the state department of corrections for felony offenses – totaling 565

years of prison time. In Lee County, 41 people were sent to prison for a total of 249 years. Three of those Lee County sentences were death cases: Charles George was given 18 years after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated battery of a child in the death of his infant daughter; Keith J. Shomaker was sentenced to 3 years for reckless homicide in the dragging death of a Dixon woman; and Matthew Welling was given 90 years in prison – 60 for murdering an elderly

Amboy man, and 30 more for the home invasion that preceded it. The average daily jail population in Whiteside County was 84. In 2013, that number was 75 – both years, though, are significant decreases from the years before State’s Attorney Trish Joyce took office. Lowering the jail population, she has said, had long been a top priority for her. When she took office in 2013, the daily average hovered around 110. CHICAGO (AP) – State officials say unemployment dropped in March in each of Illinois’ metropolitan areas for the 13th consecutive month. The Illinois Department of Employment Security reported Thursday that jobs were added in eight of the 14 regions with the largest increases in Kankakee, Rockford and Danville. Areas that saw a drop in the number of jobs include Decatur, Carbondale and Bloomington. Illinois’ not seasonally adjusted rate in March was 6.3 percent. The peak was 12.2 percent

in January 2010. Nationally, the rate was 5.6 in March, with a 10.6 percent peak in 2010. Areas that saw growth

included retail trade, transportation and warehousing and public utilities. The unemployment

rate measures those who are out of a job and looking for work. It isn’t tied to collecting unemployment benefits.

Bridge repairs rescheduled Work pushed from April 27 to May 4 be closed on April 27, but the closure date for the south bridge is now May 4, Wegmeyer said. While the south side will be closed to motorists for about a month, the sidewalk area will be kept open for access to Lawrence Park. When work on the south bridge is completed, crews will switch to the other side. The north bridge will be closed for about a month, and those sidewalks also will remain open.

Corn spends the summer standing stock-still, chatting up the other stalks. Not that thereâ€™s much to say. Sun: hot. Water: welcome. Cobs: coming along. Monoculture is monotonous. Which explains companion planting â€“ mixing up crops curbs boredom and makes the most of odd bedfellows. Take corn: all leg. The bean, on the other hand, springs out the ground a tender, grasping vine, too weak to support its heavy pods. Squash spreads its leaves low and wide underfoot. Annoying tendencies, all. But together: cunning. Corn offers beans a sturdy trellis. Beans enrich the soil with nitrogen. Squash elbows out weeds. Call it symbiosis, codependence or clever. Call it, as does my matchmaking friend Liz, interlocking neuroses. Call it, like old-time gardeners, â€œthe three sisters,â€? or, like old-time TV, Charlieâ€™s Angels. The teamwork pays off, making each plant healthier and each salad happier. Got a dinnertime dilemma to solve? Try tortillas. Whether you use flour or corn tortillas, theyâ€™re an easy option for any kind of filling â€“ especially if you have leftovers. The seasoning in this recipe comes complete with hints of smokiness and mild spiciness from the Ancho chili powder (look for it in the spice aisle of most grocery stores). The tortillas make it all super easy. Use taco- or fajitas-size flour tortillas for a softer version. Reheat them in the microwave for a few seconds just before serving. If you want to make your own crunchy corn tortilla shells without frying, get out your muffin pan. Hereâ€™s a great crunchy taco hack: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Invert a muffin pan, so the cups are facing up. Brush corn tortillas lightly with canola oil. Fold them in half and place in between the individual muffin cups, which helps hold the shape. Place in the oven and bake 8 to 10 minutes or until shells are hard. Green beans, corn and zucchini come together with a simple lemon vinaigrette. 1 pound skinny green beans, cut in half crosswise 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1. Pare: Use a vegetable peeler to carve zucchini, peel and all, into long ribbons. Discard the seedspeckled core. 2. Blanch: Heat a large pot of salted water to a boil. (If youâ€™ve got a designated strainer pot, use that. If not, a large pot, a handheld strainer and tongs will come in handy.) Drop in corn and cook until shocking yellow, about 7 minutes. Pull out corn and let cool. 3. Blanch: When the water has returned to a boil, add the green beans.

Cook until bright green and crisp/tender, 2 to 3 minutes. Pull out beans and cool under cold running water. Spread out on a clean kitchen towel, roll up to dry. 4. Blanch: When water has returned to a boil, add the zucchini ribbons. Cook, stirring gently, until edges are bright green and zucchini is tender, about 1 minute. Pull out and cool under cold running water. Spread out on a clean kitchen towel and roll up to dry. 5. Toss: Shave corn kernels from the cobs. Drop them into a large serving bowl. â€˘ To make the Pico de Gallo: In a bowl, mix together all the ingredients (canola oil through cilantro). Season with salt and pepper and set aside. â€˘ To make the pork: In a medium skillet, heat the canola oil over medium heat. Season the shredded leftover pork (or chicken) lightly with salt, pepper and chili powder. Add pork to the skillet, sautĂŠ to heat through.
