Ready for a reel deal After decades of catching customers, the owners of Bunny’s Bait Shop are hanging up the ‘for sale’ sign BY PAM EGGEMEIER
DIXON – One day in 1972, Ray and Irene Hays’ youngest daughters caught the entrepreneurial spirit. Their lives would never be the same. Veronica and Marcia, then 11 and 9, decided they needed steady income. “They said they wanted to do something to make some money, so I made a ‘live bait’ sign and hung it up in a tree,� said Ray, now 78. “We sold bait for 35 cents a dozen, and 3 dozen for a dollar.� The Hays family lived on Washington Avenue at the time, and ran the bait shop from home. Daughter Veronica’s nickname was Bunny, and when customers started referring to the business as Bunny’s, it officially became Bunny’s Bait Shop. “Mom and Dad ended up doing most of the work,� Ray said. “The kids put all their money in a cigar box, and they soon told us they had enough money, and we
could take the sign down.� The business, however, was meant to last far longer than the girls’ limited attention span. Ray and Irene continued to run the business from home. But as they expanded inventory to include different types of bait and equipment, complications arose. “We were in a residential area, so we had to fight the city for 2 years on zoning issues,� Irene, 77, said. “They even threatened to put Ray in jail.� The dogfight with City Hall even spurred an unsuccessful mayoral run by Irene. “They can put cemeteries, crematoriums, and prisons near your yard, but you can’t sell bait out of your home? It doesn’t make any sense,� Irene said. Ray dug in his heels, fixed up a truck for the business, and was ready to put Bunny’s on wheels, if necessary. “I told them if I couldn’t run things from home, I’d be a street peddler,� Ray said. “They had the city attorney look for something to keep us from doing that, but there was nothing on the books.� The Hayses finally gave up the fight and moved Bunny’s Bait Shop to the round building at 500 River
St. There was another move to where the J&L gas station used to be on East River Road. Finally, in 1978, they decided to build at their current location at 1024 E. River Road, and the shop opened on Labor Day of that year. The bait shop became the center of their lives, and the customers like extended family. “We started watching grandparents bring in their grandchildren, and now the grandchildren are bringing in their grandkids,� Ray said. They got used to the odd hours, but it became more difficult when they weren’t at their home anymore for the fishermen who wanted bait at 2 a.m. They set up an apartment and literally lived at the shop for a while. “Our summers were so messed up; we were always at the shop,� Irene said. “In 2000, we put the word out that we were going to close, but it didn’t go over well.� Longtime customers voiced their disapproval, and calls came from regular Dixon tourists from as far away as Ireland, France and Germany, pleading with the Hayses to keep the shop open. They got a few inquiries about the business, but none

Fire lane parking ongoing problem Officials fear that it will take something disastrous to get attention of offenders BY PAM EGGEMEIER
The fire departments in Sterling and Rock Falls have repeatedly tried to get the word out, but motorists aren’t getting the message. Don’t park in fire lanes. Vehicles are frequently being parked in designated fire lanes around both towns, and Twin City Joint Fire Command administrators
fear that it will take something disastrous to get the attention of offenders. “This has been an ongoing problem, and we’ve tried everything – even handing out fliers – and it doesn’t stop,” Chief Gary Cook said. Cook said the biggest problem is in private parking lots, particularly at grocery stores and bigbox retailers.
It’ll cost you ... In Sterling, first-time fire lane parking offenders will be fined $20, while repeat violations can bring fines of up to $750. In Rock Falls, city code states violators can be fined up to $150 for all fire lane parking offenses, plus a $25 penalty for failure to pay the ticket. “Signs are posted there, but I’m not sure everyone fully realizes why they aren’t supposed to be there,” Cook said. “We can’t have the ability for rapid deployment compromised,” Cook said. “We have to be able to get large
equipment through, and if there is a rapid evacuation, we’ve seen what can happen if someone trips and falls.” Parking in fire lanes can also make it difficult for moving vehicles to see pedestrians leaving a business.

The problem in enforcing the issue comes because fire lane parking in private lots falls into the realm of fire code violations, making it tricky to enforce. “The fire department isn’t authorized to write out tickets, and the police are out patrolling city property,” Cook said. While businesses draw the bulk of the offenders, there are other troublesome areas for firefighters. “It’s not just the stores, but also the high-rise community housing,
such as Sterling Towers and Civic Plaza I and II,” Deputy Chief Mike Dettman said. While a disaster attributed to blocked fire lanes hasn’t occurred, fire officials fear their luck will eventually run out. “It has happened several times where we’ve had cars blocking the fire lanes while responding to an emergency,” Dettman said. “It has reached a point where it is a big concern for us.”

DIXON – Authorities say a fire that ravaged an antique furniture repair business Wednesday night likely was sparked by stain-soaked rags in its dumpster. The call to Yesterday’s Furniture, 316 S. Lincoln Ave., came in just after 10 p.m. By the time crews arrived, it had spread to an exterior wall, into the attic, and onto the roof, Dixon City Fire Department
said in a news release. No one was in the building, which was severely damaged by fire and water, the release said. Rags soaked in chemicals sometimes can generate enough heat to ignite themselves, Dixon City Fire Chief Tim Shipman said. There’s a slight possibility that someone set the dumpster on fire, but he didn’t think that was likely. “Nobody saw anyone in the area,” Shipman said.
“The owners were home right next door.” However, a subsequent fire around 2:45 Thursday morning, in a pile of construction debris on Madison Avenue near the river, was arson, the chief said. It spread up a utility pole, but was extinguished before it caused serious damage. No wires burned, and the fire didn’t disrupt power to the area, Shipman said.

Inmate, 23, overpowers guard, escapes from detention center Convicted murderer has history of trying to flee from jail KANKAKEE (AP) – A man awaiting sentencing for murder escaped from a jail in eastern Illinois Wednesday after beating a guard into unconsciousness, taking his keys and uniform and speeding off in his SUV. Kamron T. Taylor, who has a history of escape attempts, fled from the Jerome Combs Detention Center in Kankakee at about 3 a.m. He somehow escaped from his cell, hid inside the facility, then beat and choked the guard who was making rounds, said Kankakee County Sheriff Timothy Bukowski. Taylor, a 23-year-old from Kankakee, is considered armed and dangerous, the sheriff said. He was convicted of firstdegree murder in February and faces a sentence of 45 years to life in prison. Besides hunting him down, investigators were eager to determine how Taylor got free in what was the first successful escape from the decadeold lockup housing about 450 detainees. “The speculation on my part is somebody didn’t do their job properly,” Bukowski said.
After getting free of his twoman cell in a lockdown unit, Taylor hid out and Kamron T. attacked the Taylor guard, a military veteran with 10 years of correctional experience, Bukowski said. By wearing the guard’s uniform, Taylor was able to fool other guards in a master control room who opened three sets of doors for him after visual verification by surveillance video, Bukowski said. Once outside, the suspect repeatedly pressed the guard’s key fob to locate his Chevrolet Equinox in a parking lot and drive away. Authorities didn’t learn of the escape until about 30 minutes later, when jail staff found the wounded officer, who is hospitalized in intensive care with head wounds. “He was in and out of consciousness, unable to understand the questions that were given to him,” Bukowski said of the guard at a news conference. rise, officers found the abandoned SUV in a residential area of Kankakee and approached the vehicle with their guns drawn. But Taylor was nowhere to be found and it wasn’t clear whether he fled on foot or someone picked him up in another vehicle, the sheriff said. At one point Wednesday, authorities issued an alert for a 15-year-old girl who they believed was with Taylor. Illinois State Police later announced the girl had been found, but did not say where or how officials found her or whether she had been with Taylor. Jail staffing levels and procedures will be reexamined, but Bukowski said Taylor’s history of violence and previous escape attempts didn’t necessarily single him out for stricter security measures. “It raises an alert, I guess,” he said. “But you figure the people that are locked up in our facility aren’t altar boys and you take certain precautions for all of them. And you can’t become complacent with anybody ... especially a murderer.”
TAMPICO – A $20,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture means this village of about 800 finally will be able to replace its antiquated storm siren and buy a new generator to back it up. The grant, announced Wednesday, is muchneeded – especially as severe storm season begins, Mayor Kristine Hill said. The village applied for the grant about a year and a half ago, after a failed attempt to use the siren when a storm hit. The alarm failed because, by the time

here’s a reason fresh-baked sweet yeast breads are beloved. The fresh-fromthe-oven aroma is comforting and a warm roll filled with a sweet filling is a superb way to start a special day.
Tips on yeast doughs Mix yeast into warm-tothe-touch water (about 100 degrees). Add a tiny pinch of sugar to feed the yeast. Let mixture stand several minutes. It should bubble and foam slightly. If it doesn’t and the yeast is fresh, the water may have been too hot or too cool; discard and repeat with new yeast. You’ve never kneaded dough? Slightly flatten dough then lift the side of the dough furthest from you and fold toward you. Use the heels of your hands to push the folded edge down and away from you. Turn dough a quarter turn and repeat several times. Do not let dough proof (rise) too much once removed from the refrigerator; dough will continue to rise during baking.

We developed this versatile recipe based on a sweet dough from “The Fleischmann Treasury of Yeast Baking,” a booklet produced in 1962. Mix and shape rolls the night before you plan to serve them, using one of our three fillings or one of your own. Then bake in the morning. ½ cup each: milk, granulated sugar ½ stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter 1½ teaspoons salt 2 packages (¼ ounce each) active dry yeast ½ cup warm water (100-110 degrees) 5 cups flour, lightly spooned into a measuring cup 2 eggs, lightly beaten ½ stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted Filling and icing, see recipes Heat milk to a simmer in a small saucepan; stir in sugar, butter and salt. Pour into a mixing bowl; cool to lukewarm. Sprinkle yeast into warm water; stir until dissolved. Mixture should bubble up after a few minutes. Set aside ½ cup flour for kneading. With a sturdy wooden spoon, stir eggs, yeast mixture and half the remaining flour into the lukewarm milk mixture until smooth. Add remaining flour, beating well with a wooden spoon until dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. You should have a somewhat stiff dough. Turn dough
onto a lightly floured surface. Dust hands lightly with flour; shape dough into a ball. Flatten slightly then knead several minutes until smooth and elastic; it should bounce back when gently pressed with a finger. Dust top lightly with flour; cover with a clean cloth and let rest, 15 minutes. While dough rests, line a 13-by-9-inch baking pan with two pieces of aluminum foil, one crosswise, one lengthwise; leave ends loose to make removing the baked rolls from pan easier. Brush foil well with some of the melted butter. Prepare a filling. Pat down dough; roll into a 12-by-18-inch rectangle. Brush lightly with melted butter. Sprinkle or spread with filling of your choice, leaving a ½-inch space along the edges. Starting from long side nearest you, roll dough up tightly; pinch long seam closed. Cut roll into 1½-inch slices using a sharp knife. Or use a 12-inch piece of sturdy thread to cut slices: Place thread under roll at a 1½-inch mark. Pick up thread ends – thread on the right with your left hand, thread on the left with your right hand – and pull thread ends across roll to cut. (See video.) You should have 12 rolls. Arrange cut rolls in prepared baking pan, leaving space between them. Brush tops with remaining melted butter. Cover pan with plastic wrap; refrigerate overnight.

Remove rolls from refrigerator; carefully remove plastic wrap. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Let rolls stand at room temperature, 15-20 minutes. (Do not let them get too puffy before baking.) Bake until tops are nicely browned, 25-30 minutes. Cool in pan on a rack, 5 minutes. Use ends of foil as handles to remove rolls from pan. Remove rolls from the foil, with help from a spatula. Place on a serving tray; cool, 10 minutes. Drizzle with icing before serving.
