Feel the frost

Check out what it’s like to be the famous Frosty the Snowman By AMY HANSEN

The month of December has seen rain and some snow, but a lot of the days have been warm and sunny with temperatures reaching 60 degrees. And, that’s more than fine with the staff at the Osceola Sentinel-Tribune. Even though there’s been a lack of snow on the ground, News Editor Amy Hansen (AH) was able to obtain an interview with beloved holiday character Frosty the Snowman (FS). With the spring-like weather, he has been elusive to track down, but was gracious to give insight into his snowflake world. AH: What is it like to be

a well-known winter character? FS: You see me a lot during the holiday season, but one thing I do love about being a famous snowman is I’m around all of winter. Whenever there’s a blizzard, there I am, no matter if it’s December or March. And, that’s another thing, no matter what race, gender, nationality or religion, everyone enjoys building a good snowman. Or, should I say, snowperson? (Laughs). AH: What is the best way to make a snowman? FS: There is no wrong way to make a snowman. You could build me right side up or upside down. What really Please see FROSTY, Page 4

MURRAY — A hired farm hand died after being trapped in a grain bin for more than three hours near Iowa Select Farms, 1024 Kendall St., in Murray Wednesday, Dec. 16. Eric Reasland, 39, of Creston was pulled from the grain bin around noon by first responders and was transported immediately to Clarke County Hospital in Osceola where he was pronounced dead. According to Clarke County Sheriff Bill Kerns, the grain bin is owned by Larry Schulte of Union County. The location is in close proximity to the county line for Union and Clarke counties. How it happened What started as an average day on the job turned into something drastically worse. Kerns told reporters the owner and

hired hand were getting grain out of the bin in the early morning hours. “Evidently, it had crusted over. The hired hand went down inside of the bin to break the crust on top of the grain,” he said. “The owner went back down on the ground to run the auger, and said he waited about eight to 10 minutes. (He) shut the auger off, went back up to make sure he was OK and couldn’t find him.” Emergency personnel responded to this accident around 9 a.m. Kerns said a visual had been made on the hired hand inside the grain bin around 10 a.m., but he was surrounded by a significant amount of grain. Rescue mission In a grain bin rescue mission, firefighters vent the grain bin on as many sides as possible to get the grain released in all directions. Triangular shapes were being cut on the bottom sides of the grain bin by area firefighters. “If you don’t vent it and just cut it

one way, then that sucks him in deeper,” Kerns said. Grain vacuums were being used to make it flow in all directions. Osceola Fire Chief Mike Fry said firefighters from Humeston, Winterset, Afton, Creston, Murray, Woodburn and Osceola responded to the accident. Vehicles from Iowa State Patrol and Wayne County Emergency Management were also spotted at the scene. “When they’re running grain out of the bottom of the bin, the auger underneath is going and it can pull the grain down and the grain’s loose in there and it will pull you in,” Fry said. Kerns said in his 31 years in law enforcement, he’s only seen a grain bin accident like this happen twice. A GoFundMe web page was set up for the family of Eric Reasland. According to the page, Reasland leaves behind his wife Tabby and six-monthold son Carter.

Available water supply reduced by two-thirds in CCRC task order By AMY HANSEN

The changes are coming in, and some are pretty significant. Clarke County Reservoir Commission (CCRC) was presented an engineering task order during its meeting Thursday, Dec. 17, for planning a reduced-size reservoir. “So, we’ve spent the last few months really getting the NRCS the information, updating their information, adding new and really doing a new analysis with the previous watershed work that NRCS had done,” said Mark Duben, water section manager and vice president Contributed image of HDR Inc. of Des Moines, This is the map for Clarke County Reservoir Commission’s for a proposed 1,000-foot while presenting the task orcontour modified reservoir. der. Original plan The original plan was for CCRC to build a reservoir project located in northwest Clarke County. The reservoir was to provide a water supply for Osceola and Southern Iowa Rural Water Association (SIRWA) with an 816-acre lake, which could provide 2.2 million gallons of water per day. West Lake, the current water source, doesn’t meet the needs of Clarke County and SIRWA. Funding for the project includes many sources, especially funding from the local-option sales tax. However, there have been many legislative setbacks and issues with landowners and eminent domain, which has caused CCRC to look

into reducing the design of the reservoir. Modified design This is the task order for hydrology and hydraulics for a reduced-size pool at dam site 4B that was presented during the CCRC meeting. Principal and auxiliary alternatives were investigated to determine the maximum size of a normal pool that can be feasibly developed given the commission’s current land ownership constraints at dam site 4B, which may require the original design top of dam elevation of 1,021 be reduced to constrain the maximum pool level to downstream of 180th Avenue and Osage Street.
