Two candidates are running in a local race in this year’s November elections — Clarke County Board of Supervisors District No. 1. Bill Black and Myron Manley were both given questionnaires about why they’re running for the position. The candidates are listed in alphabetical order. Here are their answers.

Bill Black Tell me about yourself. I was born and raised in Clarke County and graduated from Murray High School. I understand the needs of Clarke County. I am active in a number of county and community organizations. My wife Carla and I live on our farm in Washington Township. We have been married 41 years and have three wonderful daughters and four grandchildren. What position are you running for? Why are you running? I am running for Clarke County Board of Supervisors District No. 1. I would like the opportunity to work with others to make our county a great and safe place to live. What makes you the best candidate for the position? I have 40 years of business experience, working with people, getting things done on time and within the budget. When I retired from Doors, Inc., I held the position of vice-president/general manager. I have the time now to take on this challenging position and use my skills towards improving the fu-

ture for everyone in Clarke County. What would you hope to accomplish if elected? I will work to provide the essential services needed in the county with the lowest possible cost to the taxpayers, including getting our road and bridge infrastructure back to an acceptable condition. I am open, approachable, and honest. You can rely on what I say. I will take the time to understand every item we vote on, and be fair with my decision.

Myron Manley Tell me about yourself. I have proudly served the people of Clarke County for the past 47 years, including the last 12 years on the board of supervisors. Working for 35 years for Clarke County Secondary Roads and being a lifelong resident of Clarke County have played valuable roles during my three terms on the board of supervisors. My wife Linda and I live east of Osceola where we operate a cow-calf operation. What position are you running for? Why are you running? I am running for a fourth term on the Clarke County Board of Supervisors District No. 1. During my time on the board, I have worked hard to provide our county residents the valuable services they need on a daily basis. We must continue to find ways to improve these services and be aware of what lies ahead for our future needs.

Teachers don’t go into the education field to get accolades. However, when an educator is honored for his or her work, it is a cause for celebration. In September, Charlie Mundy, Southwestern Community College (SWCC) high school carpentry and building trades instructor for Osceola, received the 2014 Iowa Masonic Teacher of the Year Award at the 170th annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Iowa in Cedar Rapids. Overall, it has been a humbling experience for Mundy. “I don’t plan on getting any awards. I just do what I do every day — working with these kids, trying to give them opportunities,” he said. Mundy was also locally honored for his work at Clarke’s football game Friday, Oct. 3. The teacher of the year nomination process began with Russ Johnson and the Woodburn Masonic Lodge. Mundy of Woodburn has been an instructor at SWCC since November 2006. The Osceola carpentry program has high school students enrolled from the Clarke and Central Decatur school districts. Lending a hand Mundy said he thinks a lot of the award was based on the

If you thought the only two people running for Iowa governor were Republican incumbent Terry Branstad and Democratic candidate Jack Hatch, you would be wrong. There’s a third party candidate — Jonathan Narcisse. The Iowa Party is the third party ticket Narcisse is running for governor on. “Iowa’s an amazing place — good, decent, honorable people,” Narcisse said during a campaign stop to the Osceola Sentinel Tribune’s office in late Septem-
