A phone call away CROSS Mental Health Region provides 24-hour hotline for crisis services By AMY HANSEN

If you have a problem and don’t know where to turn for help, there are services available. At the start of the fiscal year July 1, County Rural Offices of Social Services (CROSS) for mental health and disability has added crisis services to the region, including a crisis hotline. The crisis hotline toll free number is 844-430-8520. “We’ve never had that type of service available in any of our counties across the region,” Kathy Lerma, chief executive officer of CROSS Region Mental Health and Disability Services. The hotline, which is with Foundation 2 services, is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. History The hotline is an important step for CROSS with providing mental health services to its area. In 2013, Iowa Legislature

decided to create mental health regions, as opposed to individual county mental health funds and services. CROSS’ region consists of Clarke, Ringgold, Decatur, Wayne, Lucas and Monroe counties. “The idea behind the regions that there could be more continuity across the counties for what services were available,” said Mary DeLong, disabilities services coordinator for CROSS Region/Clarke County. “In the past, in some counties, there might be a plethora of services because they had more money. And, in the very next county, there wouldn’t be very much money, so they wouldn’t have as many services. So, the idea is then these services would be more equal.” Usage CROSS is in the process of getting the word out that the number is available to the Please see HOTLINE, Page 4

There’s no greater friend to the animals than Jovee Blakely, 4, of Osceola. During a board meeting Monday, July 20, Jovee presented a check in the amount of $2,215.27 toward Clarke County Animal Shelter. In addition, she also donated some pet supplies to the animal shelter. Jovee, the daughter of Erin and Shane Blakely and sibling of Journee, had a lemonade stand during Osceola’s Fourth of July festivities with proceeds going toward the animal shelter. Collections are still coming in. Pouring lemonade was Jovee’s favorite part of the lemonade stand, which lasted four days. “I drank some of it, too,” she said with a giggle. Jovee said she likes lemonade because it’s sweet and tasty, and people like to drink it on a hot day. Her friend Rylee Leighty also helped her at the lemonade stand. Birthdays This is not the first time Jovee has taken it upon herself to help Clarke County Animal Shelter. For Jovee’s past couple of birthday celebrations, her party invitations were written to explain, instead of gifts, she would prefer to have pet food and supplies that could be donated to the animal shelter. “They want to have food in the winter,” Jovee said.
