Be prepared Severe Weather Awareness Week, storm spotter trainings planned By AMY HANSEN

Severe weather can strike at any time. The people of Clarke County know that well. Last May, an early morning thunderstorm had enough force to blow off approximately 80 Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train cars near Lacelle Road. What was thought to be a potential tornado touchdown was actually shown to be high-speed, straight-line winds. The severe thunderstorm appeared to take many people by surprise, and it was confirmed no weather warning was issued. That is why Severe Weather Awareness Week is so important. People need to know what to do in an emergency. “That’s when we encourage everybody to test their plans for going to a shelter,” said Allan Mathias with Clarke County Emergency Management (EMA). “It’s a good time to do that every year.”
Storm spotter training Clarke County’s storm spotter training is planned 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, in the auditorium at Clarke Community High School. It is taught by the National Weather Service. The class is free, and everyone is welcome to attend. This will be the only time it is offered this year in Clarke County. For questions, call Clarke County EMA at 641-342-6654.
In March Iowa’s Severe Weather Awareness Week is planned March 21-25. Each day has a different weather-related theme during the week. The statewide tornado siren is planned approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 23. It goes through all the stages from the watch to the Please see SEVERE WEATHER, Page 4

Sally Riekena of Osceola has been creating art for as long as she can remember. “I mean, I just always had something I was drawing,” she said. Recently, Lakeside Hotel and Casino has provided an area for Clarke Area Arts Council (CAAC) to showcase different local artists’ work. Gary Robins of Murray was the first artist to be showcased. Riekena is now the second artist to have her work on display. Her work will be up for approximately two months. Her paintings Venture out to Lakeside and you will see Riekena does a lot of watercolors and acrylics. In middle school, she started out with oils. Once Riekena got into high school, she took classes at the Des Moines Art Center. She remembers walking around drawing what was in view at the time. There is an important piece of advice Riekena got from those art classes years ago. “Just do what you like,” she said. What Riekena likes to paint varies because she has been known to draw people, nature scenes, buildings and barns. Sometimes, she even comes up with a nature scene off the top of her head. “The thing that amazes me is (Sally) is able to draw and paint without looking at something,” said Mary El-

The snow scene on display at Lakeside is something Riekena made up in her head, as well as other pieces, including one titled “Dancing Guitars.” While it’s an honor to have her artwork showcased, Riekena said she was reluctant to have her paintings on display. In just a few short months, Osceola will have a brand new Casey’s General Store. “I think they’re in great shape,” said Dave Leonard, Osceola’s zoning administrator/building inspector, community development. “They got the important things in before the winter hit.” Construction is currently going on with the development of a new Casey’s building at the intersection of Highways 34 and 69 in town. It’s also known as the “four corners” by local residents. Leonard said since the new building is enclosed, a lot of work can be done inside, even in bad winter weather. According to Sam James, financial analyst for Casey’s General Stores, the existing store will close April 3 for demolition and the new store is scheduled to open in June.
“However, that could change depending on how the weather cooperates,” James said. What it will have The new Casey’s will be a 4,200 square-foot store with six gas pumps. The pumps will be placed where the former Kum and Go building currently is located. The store will have all the amenities of Casey’s newest store design, which includes made-to-order sub sandwiches, made-from-scratch pizza and doughnuts, a walkin beer cave and large coffee and fountain area. “This is one of their newer plans,” Leonard said. “You’ll walk in and there will be a raised podium for the cashiers.” Good to know There are some other recent developments Casey’s customers might be interest-
