Carly’s campaign Republican hopeful Fiorina touts herself as conservative outsider at the Family Table By AMY HANSEN

One thing Carly Fiorina won’t do is settle. “I think we have been told for far too long, sit down and be quiet,” Fiorina said during a campaign stop at the Family Table Restaurant Monday, Jan. 25. “Sit down and be quiet about our God, our guns, the abortion industry and the truth of it. Settle. Settle for a government and a political system that no longer works for us. Don’t challenge that system, just accept the way it is. And, I don’t think we can settle.” Fiorina is running for the Republican nomination for the presidential election in November. She was making campaign stops throughout the state ahead of the Iowa Caucuses.

The restaurant was packed with Fiorina supporters and political stickers were handed out to the listeners from campaign staff. Business world The only female Republican in the race, Fiorina’s background is that of a former technology executive and chief executive officer in the business world. In 2010, she was the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in California but lost the election to incumbent Democrat Barbara Boxer. Fiorina took shots at politicians on both sides of the political sphere, as well as crony capitalists. “Donald Trump is a guy who has been on the inside his whole life, too,” she said. It was a cold, wintry day in January, but the Republicans were out in full force. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who at one time was running against Ted Cruz in the same Republican presidential primary, extolled the virtues of Cruz being a great listener and how he will listen to the American people. “He loves his country. He loves that Constitution. He loves his faith and his God and his family,” Perry said. Before the Iowa caucuses, Perry and Congressman Steve King, R-Iowa, endorsed presidential candidate hopeful Cruz at High Point Bulls Oswald Barn in the Harken Hills section of Osceola Tuesday, Jan. 26. It was so cold in the barn during the political speeches that Cruz’s breath could be seen in the air as he spoke. However, the temperatures didn’t keep him from getting fired up about conservative topics.

Since last year, education funding has been a draggedout fight in the Legislature. “It’s very urgent that we actually get on top of this matter and settle it,” said Sen. Amy Sinclair, R-Allerton, during a legislative luncheon Friday, Jan. 29, at Lakeside Casino. The legislative debacle on school funding, also known as supplemental state aid (SSA), dragged into the summer last year. School districts across Iowa expected to receive $55.7 million in additional funding that had been approved by lawmakers for the 2015-16 school year. OST photo by AMY HANSEN However, Gov. Terry Sen. Talking points Cruz didn’t waste any time in calling out President Barack Obama. “I’ll tell you, the first day in office if I’m elected, I will rescind every single illegal and unconstitutional executive action taken by Barack Obama,” he said. Cruz also took offense to same-sex marriage and the United States Supreme Court 5-4 decision to make it legal across all 50 states in June 2015. “I tell you my view of that decision – it was wrong. It was illegitimate. It was contrary to the Constitution, and it will not stand,” he said. Cruz has been vocal about being pro-life and anti-abortion. In recent months, conservative politicians have been in uproar over secretly recorded and “doctored” videos released by an anti-abortion group against Planned Parenthood, trying to show they illegally profit from the sale of fetal tissue. “On the first day in office, I will direct the U.S Department of Justice to open an investigation into Planned

Happening in session Sinclair said, at the end of last session, the House had passed an SSA bill over to the Senate. The Senate had also passed an SSA bill over to the House. Neither chamber took those bills up to move them forward for fiscal year (FY) 17. These bills concern the upcoming school year across Iowa, which is 2016-17, and school boards have to certify their budgets by mid-April. Sinclair said the House recently took up the Senate’s version of the bill, amended it and sent it back to the legislators. “I know it sounds terrible, but we didn’t agree with them, which you would think is not progress,” she said. “But, it actually is progress because that process of not

Parenthood and to prosecute any and all violations,” Cruz said. However, this is exactly what happened in Texas recently. Results from the investigation cleared Planned Parenthood of any wrongdoing, and the two individuals who made the videos were indicted for tampering with a governmental record. Outside threats National security, U.S. borders and radical Islamic terrorism were also major issues for Cruz. He said the greatest national security threat facing America is the threat of a nuclear Iran. The Canadian-born Texan senator continued to say any presidential candidate who thinks the U.S should remain in place or renegotiate the Iranian nuclear deal fundamentally doesn’t understand the nature of the Ayatollah Khomeini. “If I am elected president, on day one, I will rip to shreds this catastrophic

LEON — A father and son have died following an ice fishing incident Sunday west of Leon that took regional dive units 7 hours to complete. David Adair, 63, and Joe Adair, 33, of Knob Noster, Missouri, fell through the ice while fishing about 200 feet from shore at Little River Lake in Decatur County Sunday afternoon. According to a Decatur County Sheriff press release, at approximately 2 p.m., the sheriff’s office received a

call from a subject reporting someone had fallen through the ice at Little River Lake. A Leon rescue team responded to the scene around 2:15 p.m. However, thin ice made attempts at a rescue difficult. “It was enough that if you weighed 130 pounds or you weighed 230 pounds, it wouldn’t hold you,” said Decatur County Sheriff Bert Muir. “Most of the firemen in their dry suits went through the ice. All of them had ropes tied to
