The Associated Press BERLIN – Thieves broke into the German capital’s Bode Museum before dawn Monday and made off with a massive 221-pound gold coin worth millions of dollars, police said.

Police spokesman Stefen Petersen said thieves apparently entered through a window about 3:30 a.m. Monday, broke into a cabinet where the “Big Maple Leaf” coin was kept, and escaped with it before police arrived.

A ladder was found by nearby railway tracks.

The 1.18-inch thick coin, with a diameter of 20.9 inches, has a face value of 1 million Canadian dollars ($750,000). By weight alone, however, it would be worth almost $4.5 million at market prices.

The museum said the coin is in the Guinness Book of Records for its purity of 999.99/1000 gold. It has a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and maple leaves on the other.

It was produced in limited quantities by the Royal Canadian Mint to promote a new line of its Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins in 2007. It has been on display at the Bode Museum, on Berlin’s Museum Island, since December 2010.

Berlin museums spokesman Markus Farr said the coin is on loan from a private collection but would not elaborated.

Future of Silver Lining Equestrian in Lake in the Hills remains unclear

hprokop@shawmedia.com LAKE IN THE HILLS – Village officials are discovering that being a landlord is difficult.

The village of Lake in the Hills has received late payments on rent from the owner of Silver Lining Equestrian for two years. The late payments, among other landlord-tenant disputes, prompted the village to decide to end its lease with the equestrian center, leaving the future of the property unclear.

After the village decided to end the lease with the barn’s tenant, misinformation that spread about the property led to upset supporters of the barn speaking out, a village administrator being fired and the creation of a committee to gain more community input on the best use for the property.

Tricia Sales, who has leased the village-owned property since October 2014, got a notice from the village Feb. 10 that her lease would be terminated in 180 days.

“I was shocked,” Sales said.

Another surprise came when Sales was told by Village Administrator Doug Petroshius and then-Assistant Village Administrator Jennifer Clough that the village planned on using the property for “green space.”

Petroshius’ email to Sales, which said it was the village’s intention to “tear down the barn and replace it with grass,” was one of the reasons he was placed on administrative leave and then fired, Village President Paul Mulcahy has said.

After Petroshius’ termination, Clough was appointed village administrator.

The termination notice and emails prompted a packed Village Board meeting March 9 where supporters of Silver Lining Equestrian questioned whether the village made decisions on the space behind closed doors, and urged village officials to reconsider terminating the lease.

“There was no formal action taken regarding the equestrian center,” Village Attorney Brad Stewart later said of a closed-session meeting Feb. 7.

The board entered closed session to talk about possible litigation and to discuss the disposition of the property, Stewart said.

Lake in the Hills village administrator At the March 9 Village Board meeting, Mulcahy said several options for the property were discussed, including taking the barn down, but no clear direction was given.

Sales said she talked with an attorney to see whether she could recoup some of the money she’s put into the property. She said she has not filed a lawsuit.

The village bought the 27-acre property for $2.6 million to keep it as a horse facility.

Since 2002, when the village took over the site, there have been four

equestrian centers at the facility, 1109 Pyott Road, Clough said.

The lessees who came before Sales took over in 2014 didn’t stay long, and one was accused of breaching the lease with the village, resulting in an $11,000 settlement.

As far as the reasons for Sales’ lease being terminated, Clough said she would not comment on specifics out of respect for Sales and her business.

“The village has a lease agreement in place with Silver Lining Equestrian, and essentially, we’ve experienced difficulty in achieving

compliance with the provisions,” Clough said.

According to a village memorandum written by Clough and provided to the Northwest Herald by a trustee, reasons contributing to ending the lease with Sales and Silver Lining Equestrian included late payments for 26 out of 27 months under contract, projects that were not completed on time and complaints from neighbors and former boarders.

Sales also received five-day notices to quit and terminate tenancy in June 2015 and March 2016 for nonpayment, failure to carry insurance and property maintenance violations, documents show.

Since Sales has been a tenant, the village has spent $6,023 on legal costs, $39,570 on equipment and materials and $5,579 on labor, according to the memo.

nlinhart@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – A Crystal Lake man running for a seat on the Community High School District 155 Board said his Twitter account was hacked after screenshots of profanity-laden tweets surfaced last week.

Scott Vetter said that although the tweets did come from his account, the ones ridden with profanity, anti-religious and racist remarks posted from June 2016 to December 2016 were not written by him.

Vetter was elected Precinct 36 committeeman in Algonquin Township in 2015, he said, and the tweets came from his Algonquin Precinct’s account: @algonquin36pc.

“A lot of the tweets were racist and very religiously discriminatory, so I closed the account,” Vetter said.

Some screenshots were posted on the District 155 Education Association’s Facebook page. The association is running a slate of union-backed candidates competing with Vetter and the “cut taxes” slate.

Vetter said some of those tweets that were on the screenshots were from him, but not ones that used profanity or discriminatory remarks.

Vetter said that he did send a tweet on July 6, 2016, that included his Crystal Lake address. He said a tweet from the same account on the following day that uses vulgar language wasn’t written by him.

It wasn’t until people told him in September that some of the tweets were offensive and used anti-religious and racist remarks that he realized his account was hacked, Vetter said.

“I closed the account in September 2016,” Vetter said.

After seeing screenshots of the old tweets resurface on social media, Vetter said he thought the account had been deleted and contacted Twitter last week to see why it was active.

“They said after the account is shut down it has, like, a 30-day grace period in case you want to bring it back up, and they said it reopened three days later after I had shut it down.”

The Twitter account containing the racist remarks and profanity has since been deleted.

At one point, Vetter said he controlled both his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

vious day. Vetter posted the remarks to the “Democratic Socialists of America – Knoxville” Facebook page where he referred to protesters at Trump rallies as “terrorists.” He apologized for the harsh rhetoric.

Vetter is one of nine candidates running for four open seats on the board that governs District 155, which consists of Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake

South, Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge high schools. Those running are Ron Ludwig, Jason Blake, David Secrest, Nicole Pavoris, Ann Somers, John Pletz, Donna Kurtz, Raphael Kamner and Vetter. Somers and Secrest are incumbents.

Vetter said that even if the hacked account hurts his chances at being elected for the school board, he hopes it won’t have a negative effect on the other three candidates he’s running with – Pletz, Kamner and Kurtz – before the election.

The four are running on a platform of cutting property taxes.

Tax-Fighter Party candidates say they will forego stipends if elected

jreiland@shawmedia.com LAKEWOOD – Three trustee candidates, running as part of the Lakewood Tax-Fighter Party in the April 4 consolidated election, will not accept village-paid salaries if elected.

Candidates Phillip Stephan, Richard Ritchie and Amy Fues Odom have pledged to forego their $100 a month salary and serve in a more “volunteer” capacity.

The candidates are running for three open trustee seats against new-

comer John Schrauf and incumbent Eugene Furey. Incumbents Beverly Thomas and Jeff Iden are not seeking re-election.

Furey, who has served on the board for eight years, said he donates his monthly stipend to the St. Vincent de Paul Society and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.

The Tax-Fighter Party is running a slate in an effort to gain a majority on the Village Board and its presidency with Lakewood Trustee Paul Serwatka running for village president. Serwatka has not taken a village salary

since being elected two years ago.

Stephan said running for trustee is not about getting paid, but instead bringing change to the village if he’s elected.

“It’s about getting the right people on this board,” he said in a news release.

All four Tax-Fighter Party candidates also have agreed to a “Self-imposed Recall Commitment” that would allow village residents to ask members of the board to step down, with 60 percent of voters petitioning, if they feel any or all board members have not lived up to their promises.

Lake in the Hills police investigate car spray-painting spree

LAKE IN THE HILLS – Lake in the Hills police are looking for information after more than 10 vehicles parked on the street were spray-painted. The vehicles were damaged sometime between Saturday night and early Sunday morning, and were parked around the 1300 block of Cunat Court, according to a news release from Lake in the Hills police.

Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious can call Lake in the Hills police’s nonemergency number at 847-658-5676.

Callers can remain anonymous, according to the release.

“We are pretty excited about this project,” said Corey Brackmann, spokesman for the project who also is with Marengo-based Brackmann Construction Co. Inc. “We are looking for a little assistance with the TIF. This fits the perfect mold. It has plenty of owner investment. It’s all infrastructure related. … It would help the land around it. It looks to be the perfect TIF-type project.”

The TIF funding would be allowed by law because the developers plan to use the funds for public infrastructure such as sewer and water line extensions. They also want to build a turn lane on Route 20, although the Illinois Department of Transportation has yet to weigh in on design requirements, so projected costs are estimates now.

Council members largely were supportive of the project at Monday’s meeting, with only a few qualms related to the video gambling terminals. Marengo council members have

OAKWOOD HILLS – The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office is reviewing a domestic incident in Oakwood Hills after police said a woman was shot in the arm.

Members of the Oakwood Hills Police Department and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded about 1:32 a.m. Saturday to the 5500 block of Greenview Road for the report of a person who was shot, police said.

A preliminary investigation found that there was a domestic dispute between a man and woman involving al-

cohol and at least one shot was fired, Oakwood Hills Police Chief Valiza Nash said.

No charges had been filed as of Monday. Assistant State’s Attorney John Gibbons, who is chief of the Criminal Division, declined to comment on the matter.

The woman was shot in one arm and taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry. She was later taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge in critical but stable condition, Nash said.

Police took two guns from the house. Nash said officers had not previously been called to the house for domestic incidents.

MARENGO – A Dunkin’ Donuts could be part of a $1.5 million shopping center proposed off Grant Highway in Marengo.

Vipul and Sam Patel own two properties at 20009 E. Grant Highway in Marengo and want to build a 8,000-square-foot shopping center at the site. The site would include two relocated businesses – Marengo Community Pharmacy and House of Bottles – and a Dunkin’ Donuts.

The developers also want an outlot where they could build a hotel or apartment complex in the future.

House of Bottles currently is located just outside city limits, so the relocation would mean a boost in sales tax for Marengo. The liquor store wants to hold beer and wine tastings and have video gambling machines at the site.

Marengo Community Pharmacy currently is located at 308 State St., at the corner of State Street and Grant Highway.

The development site is in Marengo’s eastern tax increment financing district, and the developers want the city to contribute $400,000 toward the project. They have $1.1 million in financing for the rest, they said.

To be eligible, those interested must complete an application, which can be found at the Environmental Defenders’ office and online, and include two letters of recommendation with their submission.

Crystal Lake RadioShack closes Location among 200 stores shutting down throughout country NORTHWEST HERALD CRYSTAL LAKE – More than 200 RadioShack stores are closing, including the one in Crystal Lake.

On Monday, signs on the windows of the RadioShack and Sprint store at 19 Crystal Lake Plaza read “store permanently closed” and thanked customers for their support.

The company filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of March, according to its website.

The company emerged from bankruptcy two years ago, according to a statement from RadioShack President and CEO Dene Rogers.

The RadioShack team has made progress in operations and achieving profitability in the retail business, while its partner, Sprint, has managed the mobility business, Rogers said in the statement.

Although Clough said, at this time, the position on terminating the lease with Sales still stands, an ad hoc committee will be formed to help determine the best use for the property.

The committee would include two trustees, a Parks and Recreation Board member, someone who is invested in the equestrian center and someone to represent the taxpayers, Mulcahy said at Thursday’s Village Board meeting.

The committee would bring back its ideas to the village’s strategic planning session, which is expected to take place in early summer, Clough said.

WOODSTOCK – The city is accepting donations on behalf of the families displaced after Saturday’s Willow Brooke apartment building fire.

About 50 people were displaced as a result of a fire that caused about $2.3 million in damage to 32 apartments Saturday in Woodstock. There were no major injuries, but one person was taken to the hospital and later released.

The city of Woodstock has established an Emergency Assistance Fund and will accept monetary donations to help victims. People who want to help can donate through Paypal on the city’s website – woodstockil.gov – or make a donation at City Hall with a check or credit card.

Checks also can be sent to City Hall, written out to City of Woodstock and designated “for the Willow Brooke Fire Victims.”

The city also will accept donations of new items such as toiletries; housewares such as pots, pans and plates; and cleaning and kitchen supplies, such as trash bags, detergent and sponges.

Donation limits lifted in governor’s race

CHICAGO – Democratic businessman Chris Kennedy’s roughly $250,000 donation to his own campaign has lifted spending caps in what’s expected to be another big money race for Illinois governor.

Kennedy’s contribution, filed with election officials Friday, follows Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s record-setting $50 million donation to his own re-election bid last year. However, the former venture capitalist’s contribution didn’t remove the limits because of how early the donation was made.

When a self-funded statewide candidate or family member gives more than $250,000 in the 12 months before an election, the caps are lifted for all candidates, according to state law.

Illinois’ gubernatorial primary is March 20, 2018.

Yet Kennedy campaign spokesman Mark Bergman said Rauner’s action had the effect of lifting the limits. He said Kennedy’s $250,100 contribution sends a message.

United Airlines: Customers ‘welcome’ to wear leggings

DENVER – United Airlines said regular-paying fliers are welcome to wear leggings aboard its flights, even though two teenage girls were barred by a gate agent from boarding a flight from Denver to Minneapolis because of their attire.

An airline spokesman said that the girls were traveling Sunday under an employee travel pass that includes a dress code. The move sparked a wave of online criticism against United.

Comedian Sarah Silverman tweeted that she would change her United flight bookings to other airlines for a tour next month because of the leggings issue.

Chicago-based United sought to clarify its stance in a post on its website late Sunday titled, “To our customers ... your leggings are welcome!”

The post said employees are “regularly reminded” about its dress code.

One of United’s competitors, Delta, had some fun with the controversy Monday, tweeting : “Flying Delta means comfort. (That means you can wear your leggings.)”

Immigration agent shoots man in Chicago during arrest

CHICAGO – Federal officials said an immigration agent in Chicago shot and wounded a man while trying to make an arrest.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said the special agent was trying to arrest someone on Monday morning when a second individual pointed a weapon toward agents.

ICE officials said the special agent fired his weapon, shooting and injuring the second individual.

Chicago police officials said their officers responded to the call of shots fired.

Chicago police said the man was taken to a hospital and is listed in serious condition.

ICE officials said its Office of Professional Responsibility will review the shooting.

Chicago police said they are investigating any underlying criminal offenses and working with prosecutors and the Department of Homeland Security.

Job pulled for wife of cop charged with murder

CHICAGO – The wife of a white Chicago police officer charged with murder after shooting a black teen 16 times has been told she shouldn’t train for a job working in the Cook County jail.

Tiffany Van Dyke’s husband, Jason Van Dyke, faces murder charges in Laquan McDonald’s death. She told the Chicago Tribune she was to begin training last week to be a correctional officer. She said she’d already quit jobs and bought expensive uniforms and equipment to start the four-month training.

A top aide to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said Tiffany Van Dyke’s start date was delayed over safety concerns she would face working in the jail because of her husband’s high-profile case.

McDonald’s death sparked a Justice Department investigation of Chicago police that found years of civil rights violations.

Uber’s self-driving car program resumes

NEW YORK – Uber said it is resuming its self-driving car program in Arizona and Pittsburgh after it was suspended after a crash over the weekend.

The company had also grounded self-driving cars in San Francisco over the weekend, but they resumed operating earlier on Monday. The difference between the California program versus the ones in Arizona and Pennsylvania is that California does not allow passengers to ride in the vehicles.

The company said Monday that it paused the operations over the weekend to better understand what happened in Arizona, but feels confident in returning the cars to the road.

Trump looks to rally after health care loss

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Regrouping after a rocky few weeks, the White House declared Monday that President Donald Trump doesn’t consider the health care battle to be over, suggesting he may turn to Democrats to help him overhaul the system after his own party rejected his proposal.

The sudden interest in bipartisanship is a shift for a president who has spent months mocking Democratic leaders as inept. And Democrats indicated they have no interest if his intent still is to dismantle “Obamacare.”

But Trump’s interest reflects the strained state of his relations with conservatives in his party and his search for a way to regain his footing after the painful withdrawal of his health care legislation last Friday.

“I don’t think we’ve seen the end of health care,” White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Monday, pointing to “a series of fits and starts” that marked the process that led to passage of President Barack Obama’s health care law, too, in 2010.

Trump’s failure to win the votes to pass his bill has prompted the new president to rethink how he intends to promote his agenda in Congress.

White House officials are signaling a renewed focus on job creation, taxes and the administration’s push to win confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, a bright spot for the president. House Speaker Paul Ryan huddled at the White House with Vice President Mike Pence, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and White House chief of staff Reince Priebus to discuss the legislative agenda, a Ryan spokesman said.

Price tag of N.C.’s LGBT law: $3.76B The ASSOCIATED PRESS RALEIGH, N.C. – Despite Republican assurances that North Carolina’s “bathroom bill” isn’t hurting the economy, the law limiting LGBT protections will cost the state more than $3.76 billion in lost business over a dozen years, according to an Associated Press analysis.

Over the past year, North Carolina has suffered financial hits ranging from scuttled plans for a PayPal facility that would have added an estimated $2.66 billion to the state’s economy to a canceled Ringo Starr concert that deprived a town’s amphitheater of about $33,000 in revenue. The blows have landed in the state’s biggest cities as well as towns surrounding its flagship university, and from the mountains to the coast.

North Carolina could lose hundreds of millions more because the NCAA is avoiding the state, usually a favored host. The group is set to announce sites for various championships through 2022, and North Carolina won’t be among them as long as the law is on the books. The NAACP also has initiated a national economic boycott.

The AP analysis – compiled through interviews and public records requests – represents the largest reckoning yet of how much the law, passed one year ago, could cost the state. The law excludes gender identity and sexual orientation from statewide anti-discrimination protections, and requires transgender people to use restrooms corresponding to the sex on their birth certificates in many public buildings.

Still, AP’s tally likely is an underestimation of the law’s true costs. The count includes only data obtained from businesses and state or local officials regarding projects that canceled or relocated because of HB2. A business project was counted only if AP determined through public records or interviews that HB2 was why it pulled out.

LOS ANGELES – As a billionaire developer, Donald Trump built casinos, luxe condo towers and lush golf courses. Now, as president, Trump aims to develop perhaps his most ambitious and surely his most contentious project yet: a wall along the nearly 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border.

How? At what cost? And who would benefit?

Much remains unknown. Ultimately, though, experts say the project, if built, could deliver a windfall for some large construction companies and their suppliers. Engineering and infrastructure companies that have worked on previous government projects could capture a chunk of the multibillion-dollar work. Among them are Kiewit and Flour Enterprises. Subsidiaries of both have signed up as interested vendors.

But the project would likely also be stymied by the struggles that have beset the industry in recent years, notably a shortage of skilled labor and rising materials costs.

Village Board member Mark Mogan, real estate agent Kimberly Martinez and former village president Frank Beatty are running to unseat incumbent John Jacobson.

Beatty served as Hebron’s village president for 16 years before losing to Jacobson in the April 2013 election. Despite pending felony charges for possession of crack cocaine, Jacobson took 61 percent of the vote against Beatty in that contest. The outcome speaks volumes about how voters felt about Beatty.

He has had his chance, spending 16 years at the helm, and voters clearly didn’t want more of his leadership.

Shortly after taking office, Jacobson pleaded guilty in July 2013 to a reduced misdemeanor charge of attempted possession of a controlled substance as part of a plea deal with prosecutors. A few months later in October 2014, he was charged with drunken driving in Wisconsin and later pleaded no contest to an amended charge of reckless driving. In March 2016, Jacobson was arrested on drug and firearms charges after police found cocaine, drug paraphernalia, a shotgun and ammunition at his home.

Those felony charges remain pending as Jacobson seeks a second four-year term.

Voters gave Jacobson a chance in 2013.

We don’t think he should be given another.

Amid water treatment plant issues and high sewer rates, there’s too much at stake for the village.

We would have liked to hear more about Mogan’s plans for the village, but he declined to fill out a candidate questionnaire from the Northwest Herald. Earlier this month, a Wisconsin district attorney decided not to file criminal charges against Mogan in connection with a fatal crash in December after a blood test taken hours after the crash found no evidence of alcohol in Mogan’s system.

Mogan, who works for the Lake in the Hills Police Department, also declined to take part in the Northwest Herald’s editorial board interview. In light of that, we are unable to take a position on his candidacy.

Martinez says she wants to bring honesty, integrity, transparency and fiscal responsibility to the office. We hope she does.

It’s time for a fresh start in Hebron. We think Martinez is the best candidate for the job.

Ill-advised detour on fuel-efficient vehicles In the start of what promises to be a broad rollback of federal environmental rules, President Donald Trump announced March 15 that he has reopened review of an auto efficiency regulation that would have forced the nation’s vehicle fleet to use less fuel and cut pollution and which the Environmental Protection Agency finalized in the closing days of the Obama administration.

Promising a Detroit crowd that he would “protect and defend your jobs, your factories,” the president failed to mention the rule’s benefits: curbing the country’s gasoline addiction would shrink fuel bills and reduce the country’s carbon footprint. Nor did he mention the EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s exhaustive studies finding that the rule is technically feasible and that its benefits, particularly in gas savings, would far outweigh its costs.

The auto industry pushed the Trump administration hard to revisit the rule. The nation as a

whole will pay the price.

The Obama administration’s fuel-efficiency regulations will stay in place through 2022. But the standards in question, for model years 2022 through 2025, are much more ambitious. Set in 2012 and formally reviewed just before Trump’s inauguration, the industry’s efficiency target is a fleetwide 54.4 mpg. “Automakers have a wide range of technology pathways available to meet the MY2022-2025 standards, at slightly lower per-vehicle costs than previously predicted,” the EPA concluded as it reaffirmed the rule in January.

In response to the standards already in force, national vehicle fuel economy has begun to rise. In its 2017 Annual Energy Outlook, the Energy Information Administration projected that the government’s efficiency drive would cut gasoline consumption to the lowest level in decades. Overall, without any further tightening of the rules after 2025, transportation-sector energy use and

greenhouse emissions would be modestly lower by 2040, but that is actually an accomplishment: A growing economy, increased jet travel and wider consumer interest in big cars would tend to raise those numbers. Instead, the Obama administration’s regulations would push the economy to do more with less.

Unsurprisingly, the Rhodium Group, an economic consulting firm, concluded before the Obama administration reaffirmed the standards in January that they are an important part of the effort to meet the nation’s 2025 Paris climate commitment. “If the review process produced stronger standards ... the action would help the U.S. make modest additional progress in meeting the 2025 target.

“If the review were to weaken the current standard, it would set back emission reduction efforts considerably.” By reopening review, the Trump administration is likely to take the latter course.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Indeed, Trump is already writing them off. He blasted the group on Twitter, declaring, “Democrats are smiling in D.C. that the Freedom Caucus, with the help of Club For Growth and Heritage, have saved Planned Parenthood & Ocare!” And in an interview with The Post’s Bob Costa on Friday, Trump said his strategy going forward will be to let Obamacare fail and then work with Democrats to fix it. “We’ll end up with a better health care plan.

A great plan,” he said, adding, “And you wouldn’t need the Freedom Caucus.”

That’s the lesson Trump took from this experience: Democrats whose motto is “Resist!” would be more reasonable partners to work with than the Freedom Caucus.

Thankfully for conservatives, Democrats have thus far shown no interest in working with Trump. Perhaps, one day, Obamacare will deteriorate to the point where Democrats are willing to put aside their feelings and cut a deal. If they do, it will be far a more left-leaning, big-government approach to health care than anything the Freedom Caucus opposed in this legislation.

Will the Freedom Caucus learn from its mistake? The group has already lost one member, Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, who quit over the health bill debacle, declaring, “Saying no is easy,

leading is hard, but that is what we were elected to do. Leaving this caucus will allow me to be a more effective member of Congress and advocate for the people of Texas. It is time to lead.”

Poe is right. Freedom Caucus members need to understand that they are not in the opposition anymore. In the opposition, you can vote to repeal Obamacare 60 times without giving much thought to what comes next. But governing is different. Governing is messy. You have to make compromises and concessions. The goal is not to support the most conservative legislation; it is – to paraphrase William F. Buckley’s famous rule – to support the most conservative, viable legislation that can win.

Freedom Caucus members had a chance to repeal the individual mandate and the employer mandate, transform Medicaid, end $1 trillion in Obamacare taxes, expand health savings accounts and defund Planned Parenthood. Instead, they chose to keep Obamacare intact.

They failed to lead. They chose to think and act like an oppositional minority, instead of a majoritarian political movement. Unless and until they choose otherwise, they will never fundamentally change the direction of America – which, one assumes, is why its members ran for office in the first place.

IT’S YOUR WRITE Don’t defund Planned Parenthood

To the Editor: Rep. Peter Roskam (R IL-06) is a co-sponsor of HB 354 The Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2017.

He knows the Hyde Amendment prohibits federal money from being used for abortion. Only private money is used to perform this legal medical procedure for those who choose to have one. Rep. Roskam also knows Planned Parenthood provides health care to women who are primarily low-income.

His support of this bill would strip a means for women to obtain adequate health care. It is nothing but mean-spirited and spiteful. He calls himself a pro-life supporter, Rep. Roskam surely then must understand the importance of health care for pregnant women and their unborn children. The bill endangers the very lives that Rep. Roskam holds sacred. It is especially egregious that he is sponsoring this bill denying desperately needed health care to women when he also has expressed support for the

Republican plan to replace the Affordable Care Act, aka Republicans Don’t Care Act. Perhaps Rep. Roskam is not actually a pro-life proponent after all. Rep. Roskam needs to do the moral thing and withdraw his name and support for this bill right away. I am not sure why, but between this bill and his support of the Republicans Don’t Care Bill, it sure appears he has a deep-seated hatred of Americans.

A few days before the House Freedom Caucus brought down the American Health Care Act, Rep. Mark Meadows laid out the stakes for his group: “This is a defining moment for our nation, but it’s also a defining moment for the Freedom Caucus.”

The North Carolina Republican was right. The vote was indeed a defining moment – a test in which the Freedom Caucus had to decide: Would it remain a minoritarian opposition bloc whose only role was to defend truth without compromise? Or could it become something bigger, transforming itself into a majoritarian governing force that could lead Congress toward achievable conservative victories and have a lasting effect on the direction of our country?

The Freedom Caucus failed the test.

For weeks, as President Donald Trump courted the group, members of the caucus used their leverage to make the bill better. They asked for language capping the maximum income to receive the tax credit – and got it. They asked to allow states to choose between a traditional block grant and a per capita block grant – and got it. They asked to allow states to impose work requirements on able-bodied Medicaid recipients – and got it. They asked for

language preventing non-Medicaid-expansion states from becoming expansion states – and got it. They asked for flexibility for states to change “essential health benefits” – and got it.

But each time they got a concession, and were asked to support the bill, they instead came up with new sets of demands that made the legislation increasingly unpassable. Eventually it became clear to Trump that the Freedom Caucus would never take yes for an answer. So he cut them off, sending former Freedom Caucus member Mick Mulvaney, his Office of Management and Budget director, to Capitol Hill to deliver a message: The president was done negotiating.

That was the moment the Freedom Caucus made its choice. Caucus members could have pocketed their wins, declared victory and voted to move the legislation forward – vowing to keep working to improve the bill. But unable or unwilling to accept success, they chose instead to deliver Trump a major defeat on the first legislative effort of his presidency.

“The result,” one senior GOP official told me, “will likely be that the White House will no longer negotiate with them in future debates and will go to moderate members and Democrats to get things done. The House Freedom Caucus has made itself irrelevant.”

Stocks sink early after Washington worries

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Worries that Washington may not be able to help businesses as much as once thought knocked stock indexes down hard early Monday, but they clawed back most of their losses and ended the day mixed.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 2.39 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,341.59 for its seventh drop in the last eight days.

The Dow Jones industrial average sank 45.74, or 0.2 percent, to 20,550.98, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 11.64, or 0.2 percent, to 5,840.37.

When trading opened for the day, it looked as if losses would be much worse. The S&P 500 sank from the start and was down as much as 0.9 percent.

The weakness followed last week’s failure by Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act, something they’ve been pledging to do for years, which raised doubts that Washington can push through promises to help businesses. Investors have been anticipating that President Donald Trump and the Republican-led Congress will cut taxes, loosen regulations for companies, and institute other corporate-friendly policies.

Indexes recovered most of their losses in the afternoon, largely thanks to gains in hospital and other health care stocks. Tax cuts, deregulation and other business-friendly moves could still happen, but even if they don’t, the stock market has several pillars of support, said John Manley,

“Trump lucked out when he got elected president, because it was just as earnings were coming out of a two-year slumber,” he said. “I think it’s been as much, if not more, about earnings as it’s been him” behind the 9.4 percent rise for the S&P 500 since Election Day. An improving economy is translating into bigger profits for businesses, which are set to report their first-quarter results in the coming weeks. The Federal Reserve, meanwhile, is moving very slowly in raising interest

rates and is loath to apply the brakes to the economy too quickly.

“Investors have to acknowledge that a 5 percent correction can happen at any time, and the fact that we haven’t had a 1 percent down day for so long is extraordinary,” Manley said. “But the things that are usually responsible for a major market decline just don’t seem to be in place.”

The S&P 500 has lost 1 percent in a day just once since mid-October.

Interest rates fell Monday. The yield on the 10-year Treasury dropped to 2.37 percent from 2.41 percent late Friday. Just a couple of weeks ago, it

was above 2.60 percent.

Bank stocks have tracked the movements of Treasury yields recently, because higher interest rates would allow them to charge more for loans and reap bigger profits. Investors also expected financial companies to be some of the biggest beneficiaries of easier regulations with a Republican-led White House.

Financial stocks in the S&P 500 dropped 0.5 percent, one of the larger losses among the 11 sectors that make up the index. Morgan Stanley fell 88 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $41.58, and Capital One Financial lost $1.67, or 2 percent, to $82.13.

Hospital stocks were among the strongest performers. The Republican health care plan would have resulted in 24 million additional uninsured people in a decade, according to a tally by the Congressional Budget Office. And hospitals take care of patients, whether they’re insured or not.

HCA Holdings jumped $4.45, or 5.2 percent, to $90.49 for the biggest gain in the S&P 500. Universal Health Services rose $4.08, or 3.3 percent, to $125.97.

Also demonstrating the swing from nervousness in the morning to a more measured mood in the afternoon was the VIX index, which tracks how much traders are paying to protect against upcoming drops in the S&P 500.

Early Monday, the VIX jumped nearly 17 percent and was close to its highest level since mid-November. It calmed through the day and was down by the afternoon.

NEW YORK – “Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins will follow up his Oscar-winning film with a drama series for Amazon based on Colson Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad.”

Amazon announced Monday that it will develop the TV series, with Jenkins writing and directing the adaptation of the 2016 National Book Award winner. Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad” is a part-historic, part-surrealistic novel about a slave who escapes on an actual railroad.

“Going back to ‘The Intuitionist,’ Colson’s writing has always defied convention, and ‘The Underground Railroad’ is no different,” Jenkins said.

The 4-foot-tall, 250-pound ponytailed girl in a windblown dress was installed this month to highlight the dearth of women on corporate boards as she stands strong against the 11-foot-tall, 7,100-pound bull. The girl became an instant tourist draw and internet sensation. On Monday morning, Democratic U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, of New York, led a group of prominent women in front of City Hall to honor the artist, Kristen Visbal, and State Street Global Advisors, the asset management firm that commissioned the work and, with the McCann advertising firm, helped Visbal create her sculpture.

“She was created to bring attention to the courage and unrealized power of women in so many fields, and she has clearly struck a nerve,” said Maloney, who is pushing for the statue to become a permanent installation.

Visbal said the positive response to her artwork “renewed my faith in sculpture to make an impact on society, to create a debate the way a good piece of art should.”

Actress Samira Wiley, who plays the character Poussey Washington on the Netflix show, and Lauren Morelli wedded Saturday in Palm Springs, where they were engaged. Publicist Scott Boute said both women wore gowns designed by Christian Siriano.

Wiley, 29, will also appear in the upcoming series “The Handmaid’s Tale,” based on the 1985 novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood that depicts New England under a totalitarian theocracy.

Morelli, 34, has worked as a writer, story editor and producer of “Orange Is The New Black,” which depicts life inside a women’s prison, since 2014.

Shailene Woodley reaches deal in pipeline protest

BISMARCK, N.D. – Hollywood actress Shailene Woodley has reached a plea deal that calls for no jail time over her involvement in protests against the Dakota Access oil pipeline in North Dakota.

The “Divergent” star was among 27 activists arrested Oct. 10. She livestreamed her arrest on Facebook.

She initially pleaded not guilty to criminal trespass and engaging in a riot, misdemeanors carrying a maximum punishment of a month in jail and a $1,500 fine.

Woodley signed a court document Friday agreeing to plead guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct, serve one year of

unsupervised probation and forfeit $500 bond.

George Lucas gives $10M to USC for student diversity NEW YORK – George Lucas has given another $10 million to the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts to fund the student diversity program he helped establish.

The donation was announced Monday

by USC, Lucas’ alma mater. Last fall, USC established a foundation in Lucas’ name to support students from underrepresented communities who qualify for financial support. It was funded with an initial $10 million gift from the George Lucas Family Foundation.

Adele: ‘I don’t know if I will ever tour again’

AUCKLAND, New Zealand – Adele fans who didn’t catch her on her world tour that’s winding down may be out of luck in the future.

The New Zealand Herald reported that Adele told the audience during Sunday night’s show in Auckland that “touring isn’t something I’m good at” and she doesn’t know if she “will ever tour again.” The concert was Adele’s last one before she formally finishes the tour in her hometown of London with four sold-out dates at Wembley Stadium this summer.

Adele sang through heavy rain at the outdoor show in Auckland on Sunday. Photos show her in a drenched dress for part of the concert and also donning a plastic poncho.

She joked that she “just spent two hours in hair and makeup for nothing.”

Airline passengers hit the device doldrums

NEW YORK – As the indignities of modern air travel go, the latest ban on laptops and tablets on some international flights falls somewhere between having to take off your shoes at the security checkpoint and having your baby food and milk tested for bomb residue.

It’s yet another inconvenience in the name of security for weary travelers, especially those from or passing through the 10 mostly Middle Eastern and North African countries covered by new U.S. and British policies.

While it’s not quite as disruptive as an outright ban on smartphones – much less a travel ban based on nationality – the laptop limitation loomed large for some people as they prepared to travel.

“Why are only Middle Eastern airlines subject to this ban?” said Kelsey Norman, a doctoral student who planned to fly home Friday to Los Angeles from Beirut – and expected to have to check her laptop, a Kindle tablet and her DSLR camera. “Overall this policy is inconvenient, discriminatory and continues to hurt America’s rapidly deteriorating reputation globally.”

The Washington Post Since the election last November, U.S. lawmakers have seen a deluge of phone calls from Americans weighing in on the GOP’s congressional agenda.

Now, those floodwaters may rise even higher as Facebook rolls out new tools making it easier for users to contact their representatives. The tools, which were being beta-tested but went live to all Facebook users Monday, could lead to a lot more calls from constituents who are pleading to be heard.

One of Facebook’s new tools, Town Hall, allows you to find out who your local, state and federal representatives are. You can get to it by visiting facebook.com/townhall; by looking under the “Explore” section of your news feed on desktop; or by looking in the menu of your Facebook app on your phone.

“Building a civically engaged community means building new tools to help people engage in a thoughtful and informed way,” Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said Monday in a post. “The starting point is knowing who represents you and how you can

make your voice heard on the decisions that affect your life.”

After submitting your address – which Facebook says it will use only for civic engagement tools, not for advertising purposes – Town Hall pulls information about your elected officials. The data comes from either their public Facebook pages, or a third-party database called Cicero, which tracks everything from who your U.S. senators and congressmen may be to your mayor and city council member. In some cases, it can even show you who your state attorney general is.

From there, Facebook will let you contact your elected representatives directly with a single click, either by calling the first number listed on the official’s Facebook page (if you’re on the social network’s mobile app) or by sending an email or a Facebook message.

The ability to reach out to your political representatives also will be integrated into the news feed, according to Facebook. When you like or comment on a post that’s been published by an elected official you follow, you’ll have the option to contact that representative directly.

Apple announced several new products last week, including a cheaper version of the iPad and a new red shade for the iPhone. Consumers already can place their orders for the new devices.

If you’ve been thinking about treating yourself to something new and are intrigued by Apple’s announcements, here are some things to consider before you buy.

The strongest selling point for the new 9.7-inch iPad is its price. The tablet now starts at $329, which is $70 less than its previous price. It has a retina display and comes in three colors: gold, silver and space gray.

The new iPad appears to be a replacement for the iPad Air 2, so it’s best to think of it as a successor to that product – an in-between, easy-tocarry tablet for watching video and Web browsing. It is about 20 percent thicker than its predecessor but is still pretty trim at 1.03 pounds.

The lower price tag comes with a few tradeoffs, however. It doesn’t have Apple’s latest processor but packs the same one from the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, meaning it is a little slower than the latest iPhone. The new tablet also has no support for the Apple Pencil or Apple’s Smart Keyboard – those appear to still be reserved for the iPad Pro line.

That will probably be fine for most people. If you’re looking for a full laptop replacement, however, it’s probably not your best option.

Apple also upped the storage space on the iPad mini to 128 GB, for $399, which could make the smaller tablet more appealing as a travel companion for watching video – if you don’t mind the price. The smaller size makes it a little more plane-friendly than a fullsize tablet.

As for the new red iPhone, deciding whether to pay $749 for it is almost entirely a cosmetic decision.

The anodized red hue is a head-turner and benefits the AIDS awareness campaign Red. Apple already has put a similar color on its iPods, but this is the first time it has come to the iPhone.

If you’re really digging the color or if you are an AIDS research supporter, those are the reasons to buy.

There’s no difference in the actual hardware, so you won’t be upgrading anything apart from your style.

NEW YORK – New documents from WikiLeaks point to an apparent CIA program to hack Apple’s iPhones and Mac computers using techniques users couldn’t disable by resetting their devices.

Security experts said the exploits are plausible, but suggest they pose little threat to typical users. They said many of the tricks are older – the iPhone hack involves the 3G model from 2008, for instance. The techniques also typically require physical access to devices, something the CIA would use only for targeted individuals, not a broader population.

“The most notable part of this latest WikiLeaks release is that it shows the CIA doing exactly what we pay them to – exploit specific targets with limited attacks to support our national interests,” said Rich Mogull, CEO of the security research firm Securosis.

The lab tests and screenings we recommend can not only reveal potential problems, but also provide an important baseline against which any future changes or anomalies can be evaluated.

Specifically, we review blood pressure, heart rate, weight and body mass index.

For labs, we order a complete blood count, kidney, liver and thyroid function tests, diabetes and cholesterol screenings, and a check of vitamin D levels. For women, we recommend age-appropriate screening with mammogram, Pap smear and bone density test. With men, we discuss the risks and benefits of the PSA test, which screens for prostate cancer. For patients 50 years and older, we recommend colon cancer screening with a colonoscopy. We review and advise vaccines.

The argument against an annual physical is that, for healthy adults, the tests are unnecessary. However, we believe that our approach yields a multidimensional picture of a person’s health journey. It makes it more likely we will catch certain conditions early, when they are easier and less costly to cure. In our opinion, the annual physical exam empowers our patients and paves the way to better health.

Dear Doctor: When I was growing up, I saw my doctor annually for a physical exam. So I was surprised when my daughter told me that her physician doesn’t believe in them. Do you agree? If not, what should a physical exam include?

Dear Reader: Although there’s a trend toward doing away with an annual checkup for healthy adults, both of us believe in and support the practice of a yearly physical exam. It’s covered by most insurance policies and, at the very least, is an opportunity to reconnect with your primary care physician. When the annual exam becomes more than just an exercise in gathering data, it’s an extremely useful tool for both the physician and the patient.

What exactly does a yearly exam consist of? That depends on each physician. Considering that the annual checkup has been one of the cornerstones of primary care, it’s a bit of a surprise to note that there are no guidelines or consensus statements regarding what the visit should entail. We can’t speak for other physicians here, but can instead explain what we do in our practices and why.

In addition to performing a head-to-toe exam, we approach the annual exam as a chance to help our patients take stock. We review the previous year and plan for the future. We go over any active problems the patient may have, and evaluate how a treatment plan is (or isn’t) working.

We review any medications the patient is taking, with an eye to either renewing, changing or eliminating them. We update family medical histories to pinpoint any potential hereditary risk factors, such as certain cancers, coronary artery disease or Alzheimer’s disease.

We believe the results of these discussions, as well as the information gleaned from the screening and diagnostic tests,

You are within your rights to express your concern, but if she wants to go, you cannot stop her.

If I were her mother, I’d approach it this way: Offer to take care of your grandchild while she visits the baby’s daddy. That way she can get a look at how he’s living and what he is doing. Suggest she take lots of photos with her. But unless she is absolutely sure that the environment is safe for her child, the little one should stay north of the border.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend’s friend “Keira” moved back here to help take care of his mom.

He has known her for more than 10 years.

They didn’t have an intimate relationship; it was more of a friendship than anything. He’s very loving toward me and treats me like gold.

The problem I’ve been having is, he doesn’t understand how some things bother me.

For instance, when the three of us went to dinner, they were sharing food by feeding each other. I’m sure people probably thought they were a couple. Step back and look at it rationally: Keira’s living with him, taking care of the house and his mother, spending time in his bed, hand-feeding him, and the few times a week you see him, she’s coming along. He may treat you like gold, but it looks more like fool’s gold to me.

The author proposed establishing dummy’s diamond suit. Take the first trick in hand and play the diamond 10. Suppose West wins and leads his second trump. Now comes a play that I mentioned last week: a ruffing finesse. Declarer runs dummy’s diamond queen and discards a heart from his hand (not a low club, but interestingly the club ace is OK!).

West wins and shifts to a heart.

South takes the trick with his ace and leads a low club to dummy’s jack.

East wins with the king and returns a heart, but declarer trumps in the dummy, ruffs a diamond, draws West’s last trump, crosses to the club queen and runs the diamonds.

enny Petersen knew being a defending state champion in his senior season that he was going to get everyone’s best shot. All season, the Crystal Lake Central 138-pounder handled those challenges in stride en route to his second straight Class 2A state championship at 138 pounds.

Petersen finished the season with a 40-4 record and didn’t lose to any area wrestlers, with his only losses coming to a pair of 3A state medalists. He won 2A regional and sectional championships and then won his state matches by tech fall, fall, fall and decision. He also led Central to a regional title and the dual team state quarterfinals.

For those accomplishments, Petersen was voted the Northwest Herald’s 2017 Wrestler of the Year, as chosen by the sports staff with input from local coaches.

Petersen recently spoke with reporter John Wilkinson about the best match he wrestled all year, teaching himself guitar and more.

What was your favorite moment of this season?

Petersen: I would have to

say before every tournament or on the bus ride back from tournaments we always played this game called “Mafia.” It’s a card game, and it just never gets old. We played the same card game over 200 times, and just hanging out with the team are the best moments.

You seem like a serious guy, but your coach said you secretly are very funny. How would you describe your sense of humor?

Petersen: I think it’s at the

right time. Like during practice, I don’t like to joke around at all; I’m more serious during practice. But just hanging out with the team, I like to let myself loose and joke around, it’s just at the right times.

What made the biggest difference for you this year to help you be successful?

Petersen: I wrestled the

more baseball. I love watching the Cubs a lot, and I used to play baseball when I was younger, but I just devoted more of my time to wrestling.

What’s the best advice you ever have received?

Petersen: I’m not sure.

Here’s a good one from coach (Justen) Lehr: “Winning is like losing, but way better.”

Do you have favorite pre- or postmatch meals?

Petersen: Before every dual

meet or tournament, I eat a PBJ and I eat a packet of gummy fruit snacks. And on the way back, I always have the same Subway footlong.

What was the first thing you ate after the season once you didn’t have to worry about making weight anymore?

Petersen: I drank pop,

which is like pretty bad for you, because I hadn’t had pop for like six months prior.

What are you planning to study in college?

Petersen: I’m going into

pre-med, and then, hopefully, going to med school.

What made you want to do that?

What’s something you want to do this summer before you go to college?

Petersen: I like biking, so I want to bike to Wisconsin and bike to all these national preserves. That’s something I enjoy doing, but I’ve only got like a month to do it.

What will you remember when you think back about your time at Central?

Petersen: I don’t know,

whenever I look back on it now, I just think about how hard my freshman year was.

I was so close to quitting my freshman year because I was so miserable. I kind of just put my head down and grinded through it. I’m happy I got through freshman year because everyone was, in a wrestling sense, bullying me around the mat just because they were so much stronger than me. But, yeah, I’m glad I got through that.

What was the hardest thing about being a defending state champion and going for a second title?

Petersen: No matter who

you’re wrestling, everyone’s going to try to win the match no matter what. You guys accomplished a lot this season, what was your favorite moment?

Bertelsman: I think sectionals. Winning

regionals was cool, I kind of thought we could have done that, and it was very possible. But I think sectionals, when we got our fifth guy in (to state), it was pretty cool to see. I think we tied Deerfield for most out of that sectional.

That’s pretty cool, because we live for February. If you look at us over the past four or five years, February is when we wake up and really go to work.

Which athlete on your team drove you the craziest?

Bertelsman: Oh man. There’s different types

of crazy. Jimmy Pellegrino, Josh Stenger is a different type of crazy. This year those are two good ones. Like I said, two different types of crazy.

Which wrestler made you laugh the most?

Bertelsman: Juan Quiroz has the strangest

humor in the world. To this day I don’t know if I’ll ever get half of it. … Juan’s got a really good personality, so I think him and his weirdness make me laugh the most.

If you were in charge of wrestling for a day, what would you change about high school wrestling?

Bertelsman: At least in Illinois, I’d make it

an individual one-tier tournament, a one-class tournament individually, champion takes all.

California does that right now, and if California can do it – they have a lot more high schools than we do – I think we could probably do it. Keep team state multi-division, but that would definitely be cool to see a champions tournament. Also out-of-bounds scoring like college. If you watch the NCAA matches, those matches hardly stop because they keep going, and I think it would be great if we could score out of bounds unlike what we can do now.

If you’re driving the bus to a tournament, what do you put on the radio?

Bertelsman: I don’t know, I kind of like

I know the kids are more superstitious, but do you have any superstitions as a coach?

Bertelsman: Myself and coach (Rich) Tado, I

always sit to his left when we’re in the chairs.

Usually if I have a good shoe/sock combo going, I won’t mess with it. If it’s a two-day tournament and I don’t get home in time, I do have to switch it out. That’s about it. I know when I was a wrestler, I was a lot different than I am now as a coach with superstitions, but not so many as a coach.

What’s your biggest pet peeve?

Bertelsman: Oh so many. In the classroom,

the water bottles. Playing with water bottles, popping gum, those can get me 0 to 100 in a minute. In the wrestling room, just kids that when they think you’re looking away they stop doing stuff.

What do you think you’ve gotten better at as a coach the longer you’ve done this?

Bertelsman: It may seem bad, but delegating

jobs, which I still have to improve on. When I came in at the early beginning, I was the only one in building, and then I became one of two coaches, one of three coaches. I felt that I had to do everything my way or it wasn’t going to get done, and I really just wore myself to the ground. Now I have coach Tado, who does a lot of the technique. Coach Lachel, who does a lot of the underclassmen and is big into watching film and helping guys break down film and stuff. And I’m a sucker for paperwork, and I love getting my schedule tougher and tougher every year, I think that’s what separates us in the end. I even made a big score last week to make our schedule even tougher next year, almost to the point where I’m being unfair to the kids.

What do you do when you’re not at school or coaching wrestling?

Bertelsman: I don’t remember. Gosh, I don’t

have much down time. In the fall, we did preseason a lot this year. I’m in charge of getting my kids in the offseason. My wife is a principal, so I get the kids every day, which I like doing. I’ve got a big property where I live; I’ve got six acres I’ve got to take care of, so yardwork, like a lot of yardwork. In the summer I do get to get up to my cabin and go fishing. Besides that, wrestling runs my life and it has since, gosh, I want to say about the fourth grade.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

Bertelsman: I’m a big gardener. I actually

teach botany at Huntley – used to teach horticulture. But I love trees, since I bought my property, I’ve probably planted 30-plus trees. I just like seeing something grow from nothing.

My wife is getting better at it, my kids love doing it, my kids love eating out of the garden.

In the summer, we hardly buy any vegetables at all. It’s a win-win. I enjoy gardening. I don’t know if you’d call me avid, but I get pretty serious when I walk into a garden store. I love hostas, they’re my favorite plant.

Normally that has to do with his gardening hobby, but in his sixth year as the Red Raiders coach, Bertelsman saw the program, which has been steadily growing, flourish with a number of firsts: a best-ever fifth-place finish at the challenging Dvorak Tournament, a first Fox Valley Conference dual title, a first regional title and a program-best five state qualifiers.

Another game-winner for Vincent

akantecki@shawmedia.com STREAMWOOD – A missed opportunity or two early against South Elgin on Monday didn’t bother Jacobs sophomore Baylee Vincent.

After the first-year varsity player came through with a game-winning goal in the final minute of Jacobs’ double-overtime win over Crystal Lake Central last week, the forward knew a scoring chance would be there later.

Vincent didn’t miss her opportunity, heading a ball just over the hands of South Elgin goalkeeper Ashley Kopczyk in the 25th minute to propel the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 nonconference girls soccer win at Millennium Field.

“I had chances before and everyone told me, ‘You’re going to get it, you’re going to get it,’ ” Vincent said of her second game winner in five days.

“In the beginning (of the season), I was a little bit nervous, especially with the tryout process. Since our first game, we’ve started working better.”

The clearance didn’t make it out the penalty box, and Vincent headed it right back and over the goalie, whose reach was short.

Vincent almost had her second goal against the Storm (1-11) with five minutes left in the game. A cross by Dominique Anderson found the right foot of Vincent, who one-timed the shot and punched it over the crossbar, missing by inches.

Still, through four games, Vincent has proved to be a

dangerous threat up top for Jacobs coach Stephanie Schuck and the Eagles, who lost Talia Surges (six goals, three assists) to graduation.

“She has so much drive and motivation,” Schuck said of Vincent. “She’s really good at winning the ball, like sneakily. ... She just gets in there and she gets it. She’s really good with her head, which she showed. You can really trust her to give it her all.”

The Eagles enjoyed a 9-4 shooting advantage and had eight corners to South’s Elgin’s one. Emily Pasetes recorded her first shutout of the

Pasetes rarely was challenged against the Storm, but came through with a clutch save in the final 35 seconds of the first half after South Elgin’s Sarah Boghossian slipped behind Jacobs’ back line. Pasetes wisely ran up and made a diving grab inside the box to keep her team in the lead.

“I feel like every game we’ve been improving,” senior defender Heather Hoffmann said. “It was a little bit of a rough start, but we’ve been trying to be more focused in practices and pushing through.

We’re all good individually, but we’ve all got to work as a team. I feel today we did that.”

Jacobs lost its first two games of the season, including a 7-1 loss to Bartlett, but Schuck is encouraged by the way her team has responded.

South Elgin won a regional title last year and returned the bulk of its team.

Senior midfielder Missy Greco is committed to Winona State and was held to one shot on goal.

“We’ve been talking about anticipation and things like that,” Schuck said. “I think that’s definitely starting to show on the field whenever the ball is in the air and we’re flicking on and running onto it.

“Our offense is definitely progressing. Previously, we weren’t connecting all the way through from our back line up.

So I think now we’re starting to understand, this is what we need to do to get up. Our forwards are strong and hungry, so that really helps, as well.”

Priester started and pitched four innings, striking out nine and walking two to get the win for the Trojans (4-0). Nielsen came on for the final inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

The Trojans’ offense gave its pitchers plenty of support, as Zach Willis went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a home run to lead the way.

Ryan Ignoffo and Ben Levicki each had a pair of hits, including a triple.

McHenry 4, Boylan Catholic 2: At McHenry, Dylan Honkala went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and pitched two perfect innings of relief to help the Warriors (2-0) beat Boylan in a nonconference game. Honkala struck out four of the six batters he faced and picked up the save.

Bobby Miller started on the mound for the Warriors and got the win, going five innings, giving up two runs, both unearned, on two hits. He struck out five and walked three before turning the ball over to Honkala. Miller also contributed to the scoring, going 2 for 2

Woodstock 4-5-6 batters went a combined 0 for 9 with nine strikeouts Monday. On the other hand, Rockford East’s 4-5-6 batter scored seven of the team’s 11 runs.

It’s early in the season, but I’m confident that if we clean a few things up from today. CRYSTAL LAKE – Woodstock was feeling good about its play.

The Blue Streaks’ baseball team came into Monday’s contest against Rockford East having won its first four games of the season.

East had other ideas about giving Woodstock No. 5 on its watch. Despite taking an early lead, the Blue Streaks were defeated soundly by the E-Rabs, 11-1, in six innings at Lippold Field.

The E-Rabs pounded out 13 hits, including four from starting pitcher Brandon Folk, who also struck out 11 Blue Streaks to earn his second win of the season.

“I give all the credit in the world to their starting pitcher,” Woodstock coach Matt Prill said. “He’s talented and was pounding the strike zone just like I tell my pitchers to do all the time. When you go against a guy like that, it makes everything you do defensively that much more important.”

Woodstock (4-1) had a 1-0 lead after catcher Blake Waterson’s RBI double in the bottom half of the third inning, but then East (2-0-1) took off. The E-Rabs scored four runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and piled on five more in the sixth to end the game in six innings.

As Prill mentioned, his team’s defense needing to be sharp with the way Folk was pitching. The Blue Streaks committed five errors, which aided some East two-out rallies.

The 11 strikeouts were a talking point for Waterson after the loss, as well.

“Once they scored one run, the floodgates opened up,” said Waterson, who had two of Woodstock’s four hits. “We completely lost focus. I think we almost needed this game after winning four in a row. It showed just how focused we have to be each and every game. We took fastballs right down the middle. It was just a complete lack of focus as a group today.”

Tyler Peake and Kyle Dehn-Franklin added the other hits for Woodstock, which appeared off-balance for much of Folk’s performance. Peake also scored Woodstock’s only run of the game.

Maybe then the Hawks would be able to summon the effort and desperation that the Tampa Bay Lightning – frantically chasing the final playoff spot in the Eastern ConNiklas ference – had Monday Hjalmarsson night.

“Maybe that last 10 percent (of effort hasn’t) been there,” defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson said after the Hawks saw a 4-1 lead turn into a 5-4 overtime loss, their second straight defensive disaster. “I don’t know what it is. LESTER PITCHES 6 INNINGS IN LOSS Jon Lester pitched a six-inning tuneup Monday night before Sunday’s Opening Night start, making quick work of the Indians, except for a rough second inning during the Cubs’ 4-3 loss to Cleveland at Goodyear Ballpark.

Three consecutive hits to start the inning, including a leadoff double, led to the three-run second for Lester, who otherwise pitched well.

He retired the side in order Jon Lester in the first and retired eight straight after the damage in the second, before allowing a fifth-inning homer to Abraham Almonte. Then he retired the final four he faced.

Lester also singled home a run from second with two out in the sixth.

The Hawks outshot the Lightning, 10-1, through the first 15 minutes of the third period. But the Lightning withstood the onslaught and got the game to overtime, where Gourde ended things with 35 seconds left.

“I’m glad we’re playing like this before the playoffs, so we can make some adjustments and get back to it,” Hjalmarsson said.
