Lamb receives 20-year sentence
GOVERNOR OUTLINES ‘FOUR-MONTH’ AGENDA
Rauner visits county
Man admitted to stealing weapons By CHELSEA McDOUGALL cmcdougall@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – In sentencing Shane Lamb to 20 years in prison on weapons charges, neither defense attorneys nor prosecutors mentioned the teenager Lamb has twice admitted killing. Lamb has spent about a year in the McHenry County Jail, so with day-for-day good conduct credit he could be released after about nine years served on the aggravated possession of stolen firearms sentence. He faced up to 40 years behind bars. Shane Lamb Lamb previously admitted to stealing a safe containing 12 weapons and other memorabilia from his friend John Farenzena, of McHenry, while Farenzena was on vacation. “What you did to your good friend is unforgivable, Shane,” McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather said. Prather often referred to Lamb by his first name, a sign of her previous dealings with the 30-yearold. Prather presided over the Mario Casciaro murder trial, a case for which Lamb’s testimony helped send Casciaro to prison for 26 years. Assistant State’s Attorney Robert Zalud wouldn’t comment outside the courtroom on why Lamb’s testimony in the Casciaro murder trial was never mentioned at Thursday’s sentencing hearing. Lamb received full immunity from murder charges for his testimony against Casciaro in the 2002 disappearance of Brian Carrick. Carrick was 17 years old when he disappeared from the Johnsburg

Speech in Woodstock focuses on plan for reforms By JEFF ENGELHARDT jengelhardt@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The last time Gov. Bruce Rauner came to McHenry County it was to campaign for the state’s highest office. On Thursday, he returned to campaign for the grassroots support he believes will be necessary to convince state lawmakers to pass eight pieces of legislation he plans to introduce in the coming months to bolster Illinois’ economy.
Addressing a crowd of more than 100 local business owners and community leaders at the McHenry County Administration Building in Woodstock, Rauner touched on major goals including workers compensation reform, tax reform, consolidating government and giving local communities and counties the power to decide whether they will be right-to-work or unionized.

Former coroner’s defense: Autopsies of Baby Doe differ Hearing on request to bury remains set By CHELSEA McDOUGALL cmcdougall@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The defense attorney for former McHenry County Coroner Marlene Lantz told a judge Thursday that the original and follow-up autopsies differ on whether Baby Doe was born alive, or died as
the result of a miscarriage. Lantz, 68, of McHenry, is accused of failing to properly bury or cremate an infant’s mummified remains that were found Marlene in the coroner’s office Lantz in January. According to Lantz’s defense attorney Rebecca Lee, the first autopsy indicated the fetus was miscarried at a Crystal Lake restaurant in 1992.

But a follow-up autopsy conducted this year after the remains were discovered says the baby was born alive. Autopsies are performed by forensic pathologists, not personally conducted by the county coroner. Because the outcomes of the autopsies were conflicting, Lantz’s defense lawyers said they may need to retain their own autopsy expert. Lantz’s case will be heard by Judge Robert Wilbrandt, before whom she also was arraigned on
Thursday. Lantz pleaded not guilty to official misconduct and forgery charges. The charges against her carry a possible prison term of two to five years, or probation. If convicted of a felony charge, Lantz could lose her pension. Also on Thursday, Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Combs asked to set a hearing date on his request to bury the remains. Wilbrandt granted Lee 28 days to file a written response to Combs’ motion. The matter will be heard April 23.
