rowing up, many of us heard about our potential. Whether from parents, teachers, siblings, friends or employers, the concept that one’s potential was something to be lived up to was — and continues to be — culturally pervasive despite the problematic ideals and near-impossible standards it so often sets. That said, there is very little in this world more frustrating than seeing one’s potential go unfulfilled.
This cultural expectation is the foundation for the ABC series “High Potential,” which premieres its second season Tuesday, Sept. 16, on the cable network. Landing on Hulu the following day, the series stars Kaitlin Olson (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) as Morgan Gillory, a single mom and diagnosed “highpotential intellectual” who lands a promotion from nighttime cleaning lady to LAPD consultant after providing a string of insights that helped the Major Crimes Unit solve a particularly complex case.
Following the two-part Season 1 finale in which Morgan and the team used their knowledge of puzzles, games and codes to track down a serial kidnapper known only as the Game Master (David Giuntoli, “A Million Little Things”), fans have been looking forward to a second season of the hour-long procedural comedy (45-minute episodes if streaming) since this past February. And while, in a world where it could be years between streaming seasons, the fact that “High Potential” has such a dedicated following is a testament to its writing, acting and direction.
Ranked ABC’s “highest-rated new show among adults in seven years,” as stated by the network, “High Potential” edged out both “American Idol” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” shows that had previously garnered the most network attention. So, needless to say, fans of the series have high expectations for the longawaited second season. (And for those who are not yet caught up, beware of minor Season 1 spoilers ahead.)
“Season 1 had a fun two-part ending surprise and everything gets addressed in the new season,” Olson told the press, as reported by USA Today. “That parking lot meeting turned out to be so creepy, and he got so close to Morgan’s kids. It’s every mother’s nightmare.”
Both Amirah J (“Shameless”) and Matthew Lamb (“Smile,” 2022) return for Season 2 as Morgan’s children, Ava and Elliot, with each of them rumored to take on a larger role as they settle into their characters and develop more intricate storylines. Ava, for example, takes on
a more active role in the search for her father, missing person Roman Sinquerra (casting has yet to be announced), who, as the story goes, disappeared one day while out picking up diapers and milk for his then-infant daughter.
After learning that Roman was living a double life as an FBI informant prior to his disappearance, Morgan — and now Ava — have become determined to find the long-gone man of mystery in the series’ second season.
“Roman is a really important and amazing piece of casting. I fantasize about who it could be, but I haven’t zeroed in on a person yet,” showrunner and executive producer Todd Harthan (“The Resident”) told Us Weekly during the hiatus between seasons, adding, “We’ve never met Morgan’s mother and father, either. We haven’t met anybody.”
While this may be an indication of things to come in Season 2, the plot appears to hinge on two ongoing searches: the first for Roman and the second for the ever-elusive Puzzle Master, who continues to escalate his tactics
and gets personal following Season 1’s harrowing trip to the grocery store.
And although many of the series’ more sentimental viewers have been wondering whether Karadec (Daniel Sunjata, “The Devil Wears Prada,” 2006) and Morgan’s chemistry will take flight this season, Sunjata told Us Weekly that “there’s definitely some electricity between the two of them.
“There’s a reluctant mutual attraction that’s happening,” the actor noted to the online magazine, “but I don’t think we should expect to see anything crazy about that happening anytime soon.”
Morgan is a very busy woman, after all.
Other returning characters this season include type-A detective Daphne Forrester, played by “Batwoman” and “God Friended Me” star Javicia Leslie; Forrester’s partner Lev “Oz” Osman, portrayed by “The Flight Attendant’s” Deniz Akdeniz; Major Crimes Lt. Selena Soto, played by “Scrubs” and “Devious Maids” actress Judy Reyes; Morgan’s ex and co-parent Ludo Radovic,
played by comedian and former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Taran Killam; and perhaps the LAPD’s most invasive employee, Lt. Melon, played by “Raising Hope” and “No Country for Old Men” (2007) actor Garret Dillahunt.
Additionally, “E.R.” alum Mekhi Phifer and “Shameless” actor Steve Howey joined the cast this summer during the interseason break. Howey will reportedly star as the precinct’s new captain, Nick Wagner, while Phifer’s role remains a mystery as of writing.
Don’t miss a new season of clever deduction, puzzle solving and hijinks when Season 2 of “High Potential” premieres Tuesday, Sept. 16, on ABC. Episodes release next day on Hulu.

Bateman, Law star as brothers in new limited series
By Dana Simpson TV Media
Brotherhood is a concept that is, at its heart, rooted in a common bond. Whether blood brothers, fraternity brothers, religious brothers (such as monks) or natural brothers through family connection or DNA, “a brother’s love,” as stated by Delroy Lindo’s character in the 2000 film “Gone in 60 Seconds,” “is a brother’s love.”
When it all comes down to brass tacks, a brother’s bond is a precious one that can provide comfort and security in the toughest times. Unfortunately, it can cause the utmost trouble when weaponized.
“Black Rabbit,” Netflix’s new limited series premiering Thursday, Sept. 18, stars two familiar faces — Jude Law (“The Talented Mr. Ripley,” 1999) and Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) — as New York City brothers who struggle to keep their heads above water while navigating their complicated and potentially dangerous relationship.
The series, which had its world premiere Sept. 4, at the Toronto International Film Festival, follows “Jake [Law], the owner of the Black Rabbit restaurant and bar,” who “floats from back-ofhouse to front-of-house with confidence, knowing everyone’s name and drink order. His shortterm goals are a glowing review and Michelin star, though his larger plan is expansion,” the TIFF description reads.
“His poise and intentions are tested when his ne’er-do-well brother Vince [Bateman] returns home. With Vince comes debt, trauma and drama that are set to impact his brother’s plans for the Black Rabbit,” the description continues.
Both Law and Bateman are highly involved in the series, with each actor executive producing alongside series co-creators Zach Baylin and Kate Susman, who are jointly known for co-producing the 2024 true crime action flick “The Order.” Bateman also directs the first two of the series’ eight episodes.
And while both Law and Bateman were tied to the project early on, Bateman told Netflix’s Tudum that they did not initially have official roles assigned to them.
“When Jude and I were first talking about our roles, there wasn’t a decision yet about who was going to play which part,” Bateman said during press time. “We both agreed that I usually play the character that he’s playing: the one who doesn’t make bad decisions all the time. Wouldn’t it be interesting if I didn’t play that character this time?”
“On the page, Vince is volatile, unpredictable, he has this reputation for blowing things up literally and emotionally,” Law added. “And what’s extraordinary is, of course, Jason [Bateman] brings to it this innocence, this beautiful likability. The fact is, you understand why this guy gets
away with it.”
The strained sibling relationship is a tried-andtrue device in film and television, featuring in everything from sports dramas such as “Warrior” (2011) and the aforementioned early-aughts action favorite “Gone in 60 Seconds” to television series such as FX’s “The Bear,” the Apple TV+ Original “Bad Sisters” and the critically acclaimed NBC tearjerker “This Is Us.” The trope, however, exists for a reason: it’s highly relatable.
“It’s really about these brothers who love each other but don’t match — one’s a screw-up, and the other is much more buttoned up,” Bateman elaborated to Tudum about his and Law’s character dynamic. “Everybody’s either got a sibling or a friendship where you love being with one another, but it’s kind of dangerous; where that person usually gets you in trouble but they’re really exciting to be around.”
As for how the creators first engaged with the project, Tudum reports that the pair initially began by imagining the ideal setting, the Black Rabbit itself, before stepping out to test their lead characters’ bond.
“We just started talking about setting a TV show in a restaurant — a scene we’ve always been captivated and intoxicated by — and what would that mean as a backdrop,” Susman told Netflix. “Then we got to talking about characters and brothers. We both have siblings and were interested in exploring the idea that you’re one person with your sibling and someone else in the world; and that no matter what you do or where you go in life, your childhood dynamic can be really hard to escape.”
“Black Rabbit” also stars Sope Dirisu (“Gangs of London”) as musician and businessman Wes; Cleopatra Coleman (“Infinity Pool,” 2023) as interior designer Estelle; Dagmara Dominczyk (“Succession”) as Val, Jake’s philanthropist exwife; Odessa Young (“The Staircase”) as Gen, a New York tattoo artist and friend of the brothers; and Chris Coy (“Lawmen: Bass Reeves”) and Troy Kotsur (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) as bookies known to the brothers.

Ushering in the 2025 spooky season, the beloved seasonal competition series, “Halloween Baking Championship,” returns Monday, Sept. 15, on Food Network, starting with a supersized premiere.
Seeing the return of judges Carla Hall (“The Chew”), Stephanie Boswell (“Next Baking Master: Paris”) and Zac Young (“Unique Sweets”) — and host John Henson (“My Name Is Earl”) — this annual competition, now in its 11th year, allows America’s top bakers to battle it out in the kitchen of a haunted mansion as they create countless desserts celebrating the fun and fantastical world of Halloween.
“Over the course of seven episodes, the bakers will be tested with a series of sinister challenges inspired by the haunted manor — and, the most terrifying aspect of all, their own personal fears,” Food Network says of the series.
Additionally, the network has shared that this upcoming season will feature some unexpected “tricks” along with its usual treats, as “the bottom three bakers in most episodes will be forced to bake for their lives” (per Food Network).
With elimination constantly on the menu, there’s no room for mistakes. For this season’s bakers, the pressure is on from the very first episode, as the series begins with a bloody and brutal challenge.

fright in a dessert that pumps edible blood,” the network promises. “Judges Carla Hall, Zac Young and Stephanie Boswell decide which pulsing sweet treat wins $1,000, and one baker is eliminated. Then, the bottom three bakers must bake for their lives by creating witch symbol desserts designed to ward off evil spirits in the house. In the end, one baker is eliminated.”

“Gen V” - Season 2
From the world of “The Boys,” dark secrets and dangerous powers collide as “Gen V” returns for Season 2, arriving Wednesday, Sept. 17, on Prime Video with its first three episodes. After the violent fallout at Godolkin University, where Marie (Jaz Sinclair, “Paper Towns,” 2015), Jordan (London Thor and Derek Luh, “The Rolling Soldier” and “Shining Vale,” respectively), Emma (Lizze Broadway, “Ghosted,” 2023) and Andre (Chance Perdomo, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) were framed and imprisoned following the betrayal by Cate (Maddie Phillips, “The Boys”) and Sam (Asa Germann, “Monsters”), Season 2 reveals the students’ harrowing time in a brutal rehabilitation center before their reluctant return to campus. But Godolkin is far from safe as Homelander (Antony Starr, “Wish You Were Here,” 2012) consolidates power across the United States, backed by President Calhoun (David Andrews, “The Boys”) and an army of supes, while humans at the university are forced to wear identifying badges under the oppressive regime. Now facing constant surveillance, moral compromises and escalating threats from both supes and authority, the students must now fight for their freedom. Michele Fazekas (“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”) serves as showrunner and executive producer.
“Reasonable Doubt” - Season 3
All rise. Season 3 is now in session! Coming Thursday, Sept. 18, this season of “Reasonable Doubt” picks up after Jax Stewart (Emayatzy Corinealdi, “Middle of Nowhere,” 2012) rescues her best friend from a life sentence and survives a deadly affair. At last, she’s enjoying a bit of peace — even if it feels
a little dull. But when former child star Ozzie (Kyle Bary, “Ginny & Georgia”) lands himself in serious trouble, Jax takes the case. Soon, she’s swept into a storm of Hollywood-size drama, while a sharp new associate threatens her hard-earned place at the firm. Season 3 stars McKinley Freeman (“End of Watch,” 2012), Tim Jo (“The Neighbors”), Angela Grovey (“30 Rock”), Morris Chestnut (“Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid,” 2004) and Thaddeus J. Mixson (“Candy Cane Lane,” 2023), with episodes directed by Pete Chatmon (“You”) and written by Ryan Richmond (“Money Matters,” 2011) and Loy A. Webb (“The Ms. Pat Show”). Kerry Washington (“Scandal”), Raamla Mohamed (“Little Fires Everywhere”) and Pilar Savone (“Kill Bill: Vol. 1,” 2003) return as executive producers.
“Ride With Norman Reedus” - Season 7 Hop in the sidecar as Norman Reedus (“The Walking Dead”) returns for another unforgettable road adventure in Season 7 of “Ride with Norman Reedus,” premiering Sunday, Sept. 14, on AMC+. The series follows actor and motorcycle enthusiast Reedus as he embarks on epic road trips around the world,
where each episode features Reedus and a riding companion — a fellow actor, musician or friend — exploring local culture and seeking adventure. After exploring the rugged landscapes of New Zealand and the scenic coastlines of Portugal in Season 6, Reedus is back on the road for a brand-new set of journeys. This season, Reedus revs across new terrain, embracing the thrill of discovery with a mix of old friends and new. Featured guest appearances this time around include Robert Patrick (“Peacemaker”), Kim Coates (“The Walking Dead: Dead City”) and Zahn McClarnon (“Dark Winds”), with special appearances by “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” actress Melissa McBride and the show’s executive producers Scott M. Gimple and Greg Nicotero. From buzzing cities to remote countryside routes, each episode highlights the freedom of the open road while spotlighting the people, cultures and traditions that make every stop memorable. Anneka Jones (“(Un)Well”), Ken Druckerman (“Frontline”) and Elizabeth Ashe (“The Last Cowboy”) serve as executive producers.
“The Morning Show” - Season 4 Inspired by Brian Stelter’s 2013 novel “Top of the Morning,” Season 4 of “The Morning Show” premieres Wednesday, Sept. 17, on Apple TV+. Bradley (Reese Witherspoon, “Legally Blonde,” 2001) and Alex (Jennifer Aniston, “Friends”) face an uncertain future as the network behind their early morning program hangs in the balance. Set two years after the explosive fallout of Season 3 — when Bradley
turned herself in to the FBI and Alex brokered a merger to save the network — this season finds the pair confronting the consequences of their choices while fighting to uphold journalistic integrity. With the UBA-NBN merger finalized, the newsroom faces mounting pressure as it contends with shifting agendas and buried secrets. In an age of deepfakes, conspiracies and corporate cover-ups, trust is fragile and reality itself feels harder than ever to grasp. Billy Crudup (“Almost Famous,” 2000), Karen Pittman (“Forever”), Nicole Beharie (“Black Mirror”), Nestor Carbonell (“Lost”), Mark Duplass (“The One I Love,” 2014), Greta Lee (“Sisters,” 2015) and Jon Hamm (“Black Mirror”) return for the 10-episode season. Newcomers Marion Cotillard (“Inception,” 2010), Jeremy Irons (“The Lion King,” 1994), Aaron Pierre (“Genius”), William Jackson Harper (“Love Life”) and Boyd Holbrook (“The Sandman”) are joining the cast this season. Aniston and Witherspoon also return as executive producers, with Mimi Leder (“The Leftovers”) as the series’ director.
“Next Gen Chef” - Season 1
Get ready to step into the kitchen of the future when “Next Gen Chef” makes its debut Wednesday, Sept. 17, on Netflix. Set within the hallowed halls of the Culinary Institute of America, “Next Gen Chef” assembles 21 rising stars under the age of 30 for a culinary showdown. Hosted by Olivia Culpo (“The Culpo Sisters”), each week contestants face a succession of demanding challenges designed to test their creativity, technical chops and composure under pressure. As they navigate through signature dishes, surprise ingredient gauntlets and nerve-racking eliminations, every plate becomes a statement and every decision could seal their fate. Judges Carlton McCoy (“Nomad with Carlton McCoy”) and Kelsey Barnard Clark (“Top Chef”) oversee each round; guest judges this season include food writer Francis Lam (“Parkour: Beat Your Fear,” 2011), Milk Bar CEO Christina Tosi (“With Love, Meghan”) and chefs Cat Cora (“Iron Chef America: The Series”), Paul Carmichael (“Agony”) and Susan Feniger (“Ideal Home,” 2018), among others. In the end, only one standout talent will earn the title of the next generation culinary sensation. The series is produced by Maverick Carter (“Hustle,” 2022) and Jamal Henderson (“The Shop”).

Q: I was watching Season 2 of “Too Close to Home” and it ended abruptly; it didn’t feel like the series was over. Where’s the rest?
A: Unfortunately that’s all we get. TLC’s primetime soap opera “Too Close to Home” was canceled in 2017, after the end of its second season. You’re not the only one puzzled by that. TVSeriesFinale.com, a website that tracks cancelations and renewals, called the decision “a little bit of a surprise,” because the show’s ratings actually went up in its second season. That’s a rare feat.
Of course, ratings aren’t everything. “Too Close to Home” was TLC’s first-ever scripted series — the network’s bread and butter has long been slice-of-life reality shows. Those are quite cheap to produce compared to scripted dramas. And reality shows often attract more viewers as well. Just over one million people tuned in to watch “Too Close to Home’s” cliffhanger secondseason finale — which is, of course, now its series finale. Yes, that’s more than the number who watched the first season, but it’s well below what TLC regularly pulls with reality shows, such as, for example, “90 Day Fiancé” and its various spinoffs.
There’s also the possibility that creator Tyler Perry (“Beauty in Black”) just got too busy. The incredibly reliable film and TV hit-maker was the mind behind “Too Close to Home,” and it was just one of several shows he had on the air in 2017 (those being long-running hits “House of
Payne,” “The Haves and Have Nots,” “If Loving You Is Wrong” and “Love Thy Neighbor”). He also produced, directed and starred in two films that year: “Madea on the Run” and “Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.”
Q: I know they canceled “9-1-1: Lone Star.” What’s Rob Lowe doing next?
A: It’s even worse than that. Both of Rob Lowe’s (“St. Elmo’s Fire,” 1985) ongoing shows were canceled within a month of each other, meaning he suddenly had a lot of free time. He’s using it to become a movie star again.
“9-1-1: Lone Star” was canceled last September, and aired its series finale in February. “Unstable,” his Netflix comedy show that he did with his son, John Owen Lowe (“The Grinder”), was canceled in October, having released its second and final season a few months earlier.
Since then, Lowe has pivoted back to the platform that made him. He has two movies currently in production.
He recently finished production of “The Third Parent,” a sci-fi thriller in which he’ll star opposite
Roselyn Sanchez (“Act of Valor,” 2012). It’s slated for release this February.
And, Lowe is already back on another film set, shooting “The Musical,” a dark comedy in which he’ll star opposite Gillian Jacobs (“Community”) and Will Brill (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). There’s no word on a release yet for this one — it’s an indie film, meaning it still needs to shop around for distribution.
This is a proper pivot for Lowe. Once known only as a big-screen leading man, he’s focused on series TV more in recent years. Indeed, he only appeared in one feature film in the past six years: 2023’s heartwarming family drama “Dog Gone,” which he also produced.
But Lowe says he’s not totally finished with TV. In fact, he may not even be finished with the 9-11 franchise. The spinoff series “9-1-1: Nashville” will debut in a few weeks, and Lowe said in an interview he’d be open to reprising his “Lone Star” role in an episode or two. “I’m just waiting for my phone to ring,” he told Decider magazine in June. The better news is that the producers definitely know his number — his brother Chad Lowe (“Unfaithful,” 2002) is an executive producer on the show.
