CONTINUOUS FLOW INTERSECTION

Go with the flow?

N 1 1

County preparing to start design work for Randall Road project

In continuous flow intersections, drivers turning left move into leftturn lanes earlier than in traditional intersections. This allows drivers to turn left from separate lanes at the same time as other vehicles go straight through the intersection. Here are the left turn lanes that allow drivers to go eastbound on Algonquin Road.

NOTE: Because left-turning traffic wouldn’t have to cross on coming traffic at the main intersection, a continuous flow intersection would increase the amount of “green-light” time on the main route.

LAKE IN THE HILLS – A building that was bought by the village through the eminent domain process now is being leased to a business for one year. The village recently approved a one-year lease with Jameson Landscaping Services Inc. and Jameson Pavement Surfaces Inc. for the companies to rent the property at 8603 Pyott Road for $2,000 a month. In June, the 1-acre property was bought by the village through the eminent domain process from Snelten Inc., an excavating company. Since the purchase, the company has moved operations to McHenry with an agreement from the village to pay relocation costs. Jameson plans to use the property for office space and warehouse space for storage of equipment and materials. Eventually, the village plans to use the land to construct an access road in the

future. When the road is built, the 5,375-square-foot building on the 1-acre property would be torn down. “This is an opportunity for us to rent the property for a very limited amount of time,” Public Works Director Fred Mullard said. “Finding a renter for basically a one-year window is very hard. Health care fee left intact after talks By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Republicans in Congress don’t usually fight for tax increases, especially ones that are part of President Barack Obama’s health care law. But GOP senators balked when Democrats proposed delaying a new temporary fee on everyone covered by health insurance. So employers, insurance companies and other health plan sponsors are in line to pay $63 a person next year for everyone who has coverage. The temporary fee covers all workers, spouses and dependents covered by health

insurance. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., proposed delaying the fee in recent budget talks with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. McConnell and other Republican senators objected; the fee was left intact. Harry Reid, GOP senD-Nev. ators complained the delay was basically a favor for labor unions, traditional Democratic allies that oppose the new fee.

Algonquin Road

With McHenry County negotiating a contract with two engineering firms to design proposed Randall Road improvements, the debate over whether there should be a continuous flow intersection along the corridor will rev back up. Earlier this month, county officials introduced members of Transystems and Bollinger Lach & Association to members of the Lake in the Hills and Algonquin village boards. The two firms are negotiating a contract with the county to design the improvements and blueprints for the project, which includes widening Randall Road to six through-lanes, three in each direction, from Ackman Road to County Line Road. The improvements would be made to accommodate 2030 traffic volumes. That phase two engineering work, along with land acquisition, is expected to take about two years, County Engineer Joseph Korpalski said. The contract could be finalized this winter, Korpalski said. And as engineering and design moves forward, county officials have emphasized that they still want to listen to input from both of the villages. At both meetings, the firms heard concerns about the county’s proposal of a CFI at the intersection of Randall and Algonquin roads. The county is considering a CFI because it lowers wait times for vehicles much more than a conventional intersection would, and increases the chances the county receives federal funding for the project.
