orothy Carpenter has seen many amazing moments during her lifetime. On Dec. 18, she witnessed her latest one — and it made a 1956 amazing moment mean even more. Carpenter was a drummer in the University of Iowa’s Scottish Highlanders band that made the trip to Pasadena when the Hawkeye football team was selected for its first
Rose Bowl appearance in January 1957. She and the other band members received medals, and Carpenter wore hers almost everyday. Shortly before Thanksgiving, she lost her medal on a trip to the Newton Hy-Vee. Thankfully, the medal was found and returned on Dec. 18 by a woman who asked to remain anonymous: she wanted Carpenter to have the medal again. “I knew I had only been to Hy-Vee,” Carpenter said. “And I knew the
last thing I had done was load up kitty litter and go straight to the checkout area from there. But I called the store, and it hadn’t turned up.” After trying to get the word out in every way imaginable, including taking out an advertisement, Carpenter was contacted by the woman who found the medal at Hy-Vee. The woman, when contacted by the Newton Daily News, said she didn’t want to have her name published; she said she just wanted to do the right thing.

Warrants issued for pair in disappearance of Newton girl By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Warrants have been issued for the biological mother of a missing 12-year-old Newton girl and the mother’s boyfriend. Charlene Rachelle Brown is thought to have been picked up by her biological mother, Misty R. Shaver and her boyfriend, Kevin J. Carlton, the Newton Police Department said Tuesday. Shaver currently has a protective order in Tama Shaver County that states she is not to have contact with Brown. Brown was reported as a runaway on Thursday while visiting relatives in Newton for the holidays. A material witness warrant was issued for Shaver and an arrest warrant for child stealing was issued for Carlton on Tuesday. All three are possibly traveling together in an unknown vehicle to Spring, Texas. Brown and her siblings had been living in foster care in Boone County after being removed from the Carlton custody of Shaver while living in Tama County. While visiting Newton, police believe she snuck out after leaving a note saying she was sorry for leaving. After talking with family and their associates, officers believe she was picked up by her mother and Carlton. Officers believe she is traveling of her own free will and they do not believe Shaver to be dangerous. If you have any information, contact the Newton Police Department at 641-7921547. Going to Indianapolis for the Dec. 5 Big 10 Championship Game was quite an undertaking, and, Carpenter
