NPD looking for 12-year-old Newton girl By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News The Newton Police Department announced Saturday it was seeking to locate a 12-year-old girl and did not have any updated status on her whereabouts as of press time Monday. Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess said Charlene Rachelle Brown has gone missing from a residence in Newton. Burdess said Brown is believed to be with “non-custodial family.”

The case is ongoing and is being actively investigated. “We hope to release further information by the end of the day,” Burdess Brown said Monday morning. “The investigation, thus far, indicates that Charlene left on her own accord and may be with a non-custodial parent or family members. We have

no indication that Charlene is in imminent danger, and at this point, no specific vehicles have been identified as being involved.” Brown is 5-feet, 2-inches tall, 135 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing white and blue flannel pajamas. Burdess said Brown’s case doesn’t qualify for an AMBER Alert because nothing in the investigation has shown she is in imminent danger. Burdess said the following are some of the basic

criteria utilized to determine if an AMBER Alert should be issued for the state of Iowa: • Law enforcement confirms a child has been abducted and entry has been made into the IOWA/NCIC Systems, identifying the child as missing. • The child is under the age of 18. • Law enforcement believes the circumstances surrounding the abduction indicate that the child is in danger of serious bodily harm or death.

• There is enough descriptive information about the child, abductor, or suspect’s vehicle to believe an immediate broadcast alert will help. If you have any information, contact the Newton Police Department at 641-7921547. The online version of this story will be updated as more information becomes available. Contact Jason W.
