In a move that will be certain to raise eyebrows across the racing world, NASCAR announced it has purchased Iowa Speedway in Newton. A press release issued by the sanctioning body Wednesday said the strategic move was de-

signed to “expand [NASCAR’s] commitment to enhancing event experiences and fan engagement, as well as solidify the future of one of the premier racing and entertainment facilities in the Midwest.” The purchase agreement between NASCAR and the Clement family-owned U.S. Motorsport Corporation was effective immediately.

The purchase price was not announced. David Higdon, Managing Director of NASCAR Integrated Marketing Communications, said those terms will not be disclosed. “Iowa Speedway is a great entertainment facility with a very bright future,” NASCAR Vice President for Strategic Development Eric Nyquist said.

By Zach Johnson Daily News Staff Writer Newton Main Street Initiative reached the halfway mark of its $80,000 fundraising goal this week when it received it’s top pledge from First Newton National Bank in the amount of $7,500. The donation amounts to a $2,500 commitment each of the next three years. “We wanted to get a pledge into the initiative to

show that we’re on board with what [Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Darrell Sarmento] and the rest of the Main Street board is doing,” First Newton National Bank Vice President Rob Khan said. The Main Street initiative board has received numerous donations since it announced efforts to launch a program in Newton. The deadline for its application to Main Street

Iowa is Wednesday, Dec. 13. The board has been meeting every Thursday at the Chamber office to strategize and plan for fundraising efforts. The board will have a table set up tonight during the courthouse lighting and Lighted Christmas Parade festivities in Newton. A 72-year-old Newton man already facing a number of state and federal sexual exploitation and child pornography charges has now been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a 10-yearold girl in Brock 2007. James W. Brock was arrested at 5:58 p.m. Tuesday at his residence at 808 E. 14th St. S. and transported to the Jasper County Jail. ABUSE See Page 7A

On Wednesday, Congressman Dave Loebsack joined efforts with Jasper County Elderly Nutrition to help deliver daily sack lunches and Thanksgiving meals to seniors and others who are homebound.
