In the inaugural Newton vs. Newton challenge, Newton, Iowa was victorious in the two week challenge over Newton, Kan. “Although it is awesome that Newton, Iowa won the Newton vs. Newton challenge, both communities came out winners with a great community turnout and community pride shown throughout the competition,” said Natalie Umstead, City of Newton Management Analyst. Newton, Iowa won three of the five challenges with the “most giving Newton” results not yet available. For the “most popular” Newton, Iowa gained 601 new likes on Facebook while Kansas added 448. Iowa was also victorious in the cutest pet con-

test. It had 289 photos submitted to Kansas’ 167 during the challenge. Kansas took the prize for the Newton with the most school pride, showcasing 284 people wearing the “Black and Gold” for Railer Pride. 167 Iowans proudly displayed their “Red Pride.” Iowa was back on top for the fittest Newton with 112 people participating in the one mile community walk to 80 people in Kansas. Several Newton businesses will be taking part in the community trick-or-treating event on Thursday. The Pet Kingdom Halloween Pet Costume Contest will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the west side of the courthouse. From 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. there will be trick-or-treating at the courthouse square and DMACC Newton Campus, 600 N. Second Ave. W. Other businesses participating include: Skiff Medical Center, 204 N. Fourth Ave. E. from 5 to 8 p.m.; McCann Village,

1105 E. 12th Ave. E., from 5 to 7 p.m.; Nelson Manor, 1500 First Ave. E.; from 6 to 8 p.m.; Newton Village, 110 N. Fifth Ave. W., from 6 to 7 p.m.; Park Centre, 500 First St. N., from 6 to 8 p.m. Two haunted houses will be open: 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. E-Clips Haunted House will be open with admission being one canned good item for the Salvation Army Food Bank; then from 6 to 8 p.m. Newton Health Care Haunted House will be open at 200 S. Approximately 100 Windstream Internet customers will be without service in the Newton, Grinnell, Toledo and Le Grand area next month. Windstream discontinued selling the Fixed Wireless High Speed Internet Service in 2011, but maintained the service for existing customers. Recently, equipment that is used for the service has been discontinued and Windstream made the decision to no longer offer the service. “It’s just disappointing that they gave us four weeks to figure it out with

no options from them,” Jeanne Deutsch, Windstream customer said. Deutsch has had Internet through Windstream for more 15 years in her rural Jasper County home, dating back to when the company was Iowa Telecom and before. A letter dated Oct. 6 arrived informing her the high speed Internet would be discontinued in a month with no options or other routes to pursue. “My option with them apparently would be dialup,” Deutsch said. “How long ago was dial-up?” Windstream said in a letter that the equipment WINDSTREAM | 3A

For the last few years, Gayle Isaac has been Newton Community School D i s trict unofficial coordinator for emergency situations and headed up anIsaac other of the safety improvement initiatives that have gone into effect. At Monday’s board of education meeting, Isaac,

the district’s business services manager, received the go-ahead to proceed with one project and to begin the final steps for another. The board approved nearly $25,000 proposal submitted by Isaac to improve the camera and intercom systems at the entry points to each of the district’s campuses. Basics and Beyond Alternative — which already has the updated system and maintains a separate entrance from the rest of the Emerson Hough building — was the only school excluded.
