Supervisors to hear asbestos bids for former care facility By Ty Rushing Newton Daily News

Mike Mendenhall/Daily News Gary Thompson and Lilly Springer, 6, both of Newton, select a treat Saturday at the Capitol II Theatre during the Duane and Floppy Film Festival. The event saw 97 attendees raising approximately $500 for United Way of Jasper County and the Capitol II.

Duane and Floppy festival draws young and old to Capitol II By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News Nearly 100 fans took a nostalgic trip Saturday at the Capitol II Theatre in downtown Newton viewing classic clips at the “Duane and Floppy Film Festival,” paying homage to WHO-TV 13 children program icon Duane Ellet and his puppet Floppy the dog while raising funds for the United Way of Jasper County. Newton was the fourth central Iowa stop this year for the Duane and Floppy festival, showing a 90-minute compilation of “The Floppy Show” and “Duane and Friend” which aired from 1957 to 1984. While the

iconic intro music of the kids cartoon classic Loony Tunes echoed from the theater doors, Iowa broadcast historian Jeff Stein — who host the festivals around central Iowa — said he’s happy to see that Duane and Floppy are translating to a younger generation. “What’s especially gratifying is how many different ages are here. When you see grandparents, parents and kids, we’re passing on something that three generations have been a part of,” Stein sad. “It’s something that really does hold up, even though the shows been off the air for nearly 30 years.” FLOPPY | 3A

The former Jasper County Care Facility has set vacant since 2000, and it looks like time is now ticking on the dilapidated structure. At Tuesday’s Jasper County Board of Supervisors meeting, the board will vote on accepting a bid to have the asbestos in the facility removed. By taking this step, the county is getting closer to its goal of demolishing the structure. According to the agenda, two bids were submitted for the contract to remove the asbestos. Ankeny-based Rew Services Corporation placed a low bid of $29,927. During Thursday’s Jasper County League of Womens Voters Candidates Forum, incumbent board members and candidates, Joe Brock and Dennis Carpenter, both expressed a desire to see the facility torn down. Both men were also in support of having the

site become a potential a green space under the care of the Jasper County Conservation Office. Jasper County Treasurer Doug Bishop is listed on the agenda for two items, including his office’s semi-annual report. The report, which covers the second half of the previous 2013-2014 fiscal year, shows the county having a little more than $38 million in expenditures and $37.8 million in revenues. It also shows the county having a fund balance of $17 million as of June 30. Bishop’s other item will focus on projected 2015 local options sales tax revenues for various participating local jurisdictions and school districts. In other business, Dennis Simon, Jasper County Human Resources Director, will present the board with a proposed holiday for county employees. School board pulls property purchase from agenda By Ty Rushing Newton Daily News Mike Mendenhall/Daily News Iowa’s Democratic candidate for Lt. Gov. Monica Vernon visits with volunteer Cindy Pollard, of Newton and Chaz Allen Campaign District Coordinator Daniel Wasta Saturday in Newton at the Jasper County Democratic Party’s headquarters. Newton was Vernon’s first of four stops Saturday during the Iowa Democratic Party’s 99 counties in 24 hours event. Candidates and party officials split the map Saturday in a push to excite their voter base with nine days to go until Election Day. Volunteers told Vernon that there are still 1,000 absentee ballots waiting to be cast in Jasper County as of Saturday. Vernon’s visit comes on the heals of a nine-day bus tour with Gubernatorial running mate Jack Hatch (D-Des Moines). Their Republican opponents and incumbents Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds are currently on a 12-day trip across the state. Election Day is Nov. 4.

Monday’s meeting of the Newton Community School District Board of Education was to feature a vote on acquiring property, after the board gave
