but are willing to come back and make it right. He also said they are looking into the work Ames Environmental did in identifying everything correctly. “In the meantime, we are in the position where we are going to certainly have to hire Shive-Hattery’s team to come in and identify everything and bring it up to date,” Brock said. The approximate cost for the engineering firm to complete the inspection is $7,500. It is yet to be seen if the county will recover any money or services from the incident, but Brock said he will be talking with the county attorney and pursue it through that channel. “We don’t want to get hung up with our bids and our contractors to get there and then have asbestos and have the work come to a stop. We need to have this thing buttoned up,” Brock said. The youth shelter, which is under consideration to be de-

Issues with the asbestos removal process at the former Jasper County Care Facility still remain, Jasper County Supervisor Joe Brock said during his update of the project. Engineers with Shive-Hattery, the consulting firm in charge of the project, have found asbestos in the former care facility, even after removal had been completed. “What we are running into is the engineer firm took a look at asbestos removal immediately identified suspect piles that potentially have asbestos. In fact, put it at 99 percent certain,” Brock said. Ames Environmental did the original study on the property in 2009, and REW Services Corp. of Ankeny completed the removal. Brock said it is suspected that REW did not do what they said they were going to do,

molished, is free of asbestos. Christopher Bauer, the engineer from Shive-Hattery working on the project, is set to speak at the Oct. 13 board of supervisors meeting. County supervisors have alloted $74,000 to Shive-Hattery for work to be completed prior to demolition, about $11,000 has been spent. Slightly more than 278 acres of farm land located at the care facility was also leased at the meeting. Four bidders were present with Dean Van Kooten having the highest bid of $273 per acre. The total amount received is $75,975 for the land on a two year lease. In other business: • Ed Roach with the 911 service board was approved for a lease agreement with Motorola for radio equipment. A new interactive phone app allows Newton High School students, parents and fans to follow schedules and interact with local businesses. The Newton Cardinals app was recently launched on both the Apple and Android platforms. The app has a wide variety of features, including a fan poll, links to social media, schedules for athletics and activities, and more. NHS Activities Director Scott Garvis said the app is a work in progress, but so far, the feedback he’s received has been positive.

“The program went through a ‘soft launch’ at the beginning of the year, but this process has been in place since the spring,” Garvis said. “There are a few kinks to work out, but overall we are seeing terrific results in encouraging fan, student and parent engagement.” The events function is linked to a calendar of school events, ranging from ninth grade football to Cardinal Regiment marching competitions. The social media function is linked to @CardinalAD, the official Twitter account of the NHS athletic APP | 3A

NPD to upgrade McDonald’s now serving all-day breakfast building security By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News

By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The Newton City Council approved new security cameras and an evidence docum e n tation system for the Ne w t o n Police Depar tm e n t Monday. Burdess Also approved was a three-door access control system to help control entry and exit doors at the department. The department currently operates with an antiquated system for the recording and preservation of digital evidence in the interview

rooms. Because of the age of the equipment, it requires a significant amount of staff time to record, copy and disseminate digital evidence for court purposes. “Essentially, we currently utilize a DVD recording system to record all of our interviews and any of our processing at the police departments. That obviously causes some inefficiency with the time recording the DVD,” Police Chief Rob Burdess said. “So it will improve efficiency.” The new system will allow for improved documentation of incidents in the department parking lots, lobby and hallways, which it says is imperative for court documentation, prosecution SECURITY | 3A
