Tax-free shopping returns this weekend

Colorado Springs Gazette

Jason W. Brooks/Daily News The Shoe Dept. will likely be among one of the busy spots Friday and Saturday, as those will be Iowa’s 2015 tax-exempt days for certain products.

Shoes, most clothing will be among tax-exempt items By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News If you want to pick up a new pair of shoes Friday or Saturday in Iowa, you won’t have to pay state and local-option sales tax — unless, of course, the shoes have cleats or spikes. Shoes with cleats or spikes aren’t on the Iowa Department of Revenue’s exemption list for this weekend’s tax holiday, but most other footwear will be tax-free, if it is priced at less than $100. That’s one of dozens of examples of the complex distinctions made on lists of exempt and non-exempt items on

the department’s list. Barrettes, bobby pins and belt buckles are all taxable this weekend; bow ties, however, are exempt. Wallets and billfolds aren’t exempt, but swimsuits are tax-free. There are many other examples of distinctions, with the basic premise being how essential and everyday-use the product happens to be. Baseball gloves — the kind for fielding and the kinds for hitting or sliding — won’t be tax-free, but you wouldn’t have to pay state tax if you buy gloves worn for other purposes, such as fashion or gardening.

Corsets, corset laces and adult diapers are tax-exempt; protective masks, skin-diving suits, fishing boots and ice and roller skates are not. The sale takes place during a period beginning at 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August and ending at midnight of the following Saturday. A manufacturer’s coupon does not reduce the sales price of an item. Therefore, a manufacturer’s coupon cannot be used to reduce the selling price of an item to less than $100 in order to qualify for the exemption. Store coupons and dis-

counts reduce the sales price of an item. A store coupon or discount can be used to reduce the sales price of an item to less than $100 in order to qualify for the exemption. Iowa is one of about 17 states that has a tax holiday. Land purchased for new machine shed in Reasnor By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News An area that previously housed a softball field in Reasnor was purchased Tuesday by the county to be used for a machine shed. The Jasper County Board

of Supervisors approved the $31,000 purchase for 1.6 acres of land to be used for the project. “This is where we are looking to put up a new shed to combine Monroe and Galesberg,” assistant to the county engineer Pam Olson said.

Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News At the request of Pam Olson of the Jasper County Engineer’s Office, 1.6 acres of land was purchased in Reasnor by the Jasper County Board of Supervisors to be used for a new machine shed Tuesday.

Olson also requested a public hearing be set for Ordinance 62 which establishes Jasper County’s policy for the construction of roads and bridges, reconstruction of roads and bridges and other roadway and drainages features associated with road and bridge construction. “We have an ordinance in place, so basically this is taking our policies of our minimum roadway widths and our minimum bridge widths and puts it into an ordinance,” Olson said. With the implementation, this policy will set the minimum design standards that Jasper County will follow in construction or reconstruction roads and bridges. These criteria will be based on accepted engineering practices and standards established by the Iowa DOT and Federal Highway Administration. Dates for the public hearings are set at 9:30 a.m. for Aug. 18, Aug. 24 and Sept. 1 The board has the right to wave the final to public hearings and approve the resolution after the first reading.
