The collision happened at about 3:50 p.m. along the stretch of F48 that is between South League Road and West 92nd Street South. By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Five people will contend for three seats this year in the Newton Community School District board elections. Incumbents Donna Cook and Bill Perrenoud, along with challengers Ann Leonard, Josh Cantu and Andy Elliot, have filed paperwork and Cook will run for one of the three contested at-large positions. All are Newton residents except Perrenoud, who resides in Lambs Grove. Voters who live in the district go to the polls Sept. 8. The three canPerrenoud didates who earn the most votes will win four-year terms, which begins with the board’s Sept. 14 meeting. Nat Clark, who has served on the board since 2011, has decided not to seek another term. The terms held by Travis Padget, Robyn Friedman, Andy Elbert and board President Sheri Benson expire in 2017. The memory of the late Brendan O’Brien lives on through his love of art and a scholarship for students interested in pursuing a creative-based occupation. Bob O’Brien, local owner of Dairy Queen, lost his son in a vehicular accident in 2013. “Brendan was in every way an artist at all times,” O’Brien said. “He took art classes at the YMCA and in Des Moines and was just always doodling and drawing. I thought it would be best to honor

him through a scholarship intended for artists.” O’Brien said for the past few years, the Brendan O’Brien Fund has provided a scholarship for high school seniors interested in the arts, but this is the first year it has established a connection with the Centre for Arts and Artists to give $1,000 to a college student. “We just hope the money is used in anyway it helps the student,” O’Brien said. “Anything to really perpetuate my son’s name is great for SCHOLARSHIP | 3A

Christie to make Jasper Community Foundation appearance at announces annual grant awards Iowa Speedway Newton Daily News

Newton Daily News New Jersey Governor and 2016 Republican presidential hopeful Chris Christie is scheduled to make an appearance at Iowa Speedway during the upcoming race weekend. Christie continues what has been a thorough campaign in Iowa with a trip to the infield garage of Iowa Speedway on Saturday. He’s slated to greet fans, crews and drivers from 1

p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the garage. The governor is also scheduled to greet fans in the Speedway parking lots from 1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. He is the fourth Republican presidential candidate to come to Newton within the past five weeks, following Carly Fiorina, Mike Huckabee and Bobby Jindal. Martin O’Malley is the only major declared Democratic party candidate to have visited Newton recently.

The Jasper Community Foundation is awarding 23 area nonprofit organizations grants this year through the state-sponsored County Endowment Program. A total of 29 proposals were received from educational, municipal and nonprofit organizations throughout Jasper County. “I am pleased to announce that the foundation awarded $91,345 in grants during our annual grant program. These grant funds will provide much needed financial support for a variety of important programs

and services in Jasper County,” said Dan Skokan, president of the Jasper Community Foundation. “Each year the foundation makes an effort to fund a wide variety of programs that touch residents all over the county. This year our Board reviewed requests from organizations that represented, among others: human services, education, recreation, arts and culture and community vitality.” The foundation awarded grants that ranged from $250 to $10,000 to new or enhanced, innovative programs that address needs or issues within Jasper County.
