First-time exhibitor Inaugural barbecue earns cat show contest is grand champion finger-licking good By Alex Olp Newton Daily News COLFAX — Friday’s cat show was one of the first 4-H/FFA events to kick off the 2016 Jasper County Fair as the felines were judged for grooming, behavior and appearance. Five cats were exhibited in the competition, but only one came out on top with the grand champion purple ribbon which was Gia — a bengal cat shown by 10-year-old Jacelyn Lind. Lind, who is from Colfax, has had the 3-year-

old cat its whole life and finds the feline’s everyday actions to be very unique from typical house cats and said the pet will even jump in the shower with someone. “She’s very fascinated with water. Every morning she’ll yelp and yelp because she wants water,” Lind said. “She likes to get outside and run even though she’s an inside cat. And she can jump real far. She can jump off a dresser to the top of my bunkbed. It’s crazy, but cool.” FAIR | 3A

By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News COLFAX — The inaugural Blue Ribbon BBQ Cook-off at the Jasper County Fair was deemed a tasty success. Ten competitors spent more than eight hours cooking four meats for three judges and one team was crowned the grand champion on Saturday. Teams began arriving early Saturday morning, ready to receive their meat at 8 a.m. They competed in four categories working with about six pounds

beef brisket, one eightpound pork shoulder/ butt, two whole chickens and two racks of spare ribs to create their one-of-akind barbecue creations. Judging started at 4:30 p.m. with chicken, ribs going to the judges at 5 p.m., pork butt/shoulder at 5:30 p.m. and brisket rounded out the event 6 p.m. Picked to taste and rate the 40 different pieces of meat were judges Jeff King, Eric Harder and Doug Edge. After a day of cooking, several hours of judging

When storms led to a handful of Jasper County Fair schedule snags, adults had to adapt and either reschedule or relocate events. However, for many of the youth exhibiting animals or other entries at the county fair, flexibility and adapt-

ing are part of what they’ve always done. Heavy rains and wind left a muddy Jasper County Fairgrounds late Sunday morning, forcing organizers to decide which events could still happen as scheduled. Basically, most events happening on gravel, pavement, grass or indoors were held as scheduled, while events held on dirt, such as

rodeo arena competitions, had to be moved. Wednesday, three events originally slated for Sunday will have new times and a new date. The “Barnyard Battles” will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the pavilion, while the bottle calf show will be at 6 p.m. and the antique tractor

One of Newton’s most highly visible convenience stores has a new owner — and, later this week, it will have a new name. The Kum & Go store located at 401 First Ave. E. is one of 21 stores being sold by Kum & Go to a different company to become Yesway locations. In a recent news release, BW Gas & Convenience Holdings, part of a Massachusetts-based national private investment firm, announced it’s acquiring 21 Iowa stores from Kum & Go, none of which are in any of the state’s largest cities. The Newton store will be closed Wednesday to take care of many of the major transition items associated with the changeover. The 21-store acquisition will give Yesway a total of 31 stores, all in Iowa. Three stores involved are in Mason City. Some of the other Kum & Go stores that have changed or are changing to Yesway are in Fort Dodge, Webster City, Waterloo, Clarion, Story City, Belmond, Ottumwa, Centerville, Elkhorn, Harlan, Walnut, Audubon, Missouri Valley, Manilla and Logan.

Youth, adults adapt to weather and more at fair By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News

Dakota Access, LLC has begun pre-construction activity west of Newton in preparation to lay 34 miles of crude oil pipeline through Jasper County. This is a small segment of the larger 1,134-mile Dakota Access Pipeline which, once completed, will run through four states and link the North Dakota Bakken Oil Fields with a hub in Patoka, Ill. and gulf coast refineries. The clearing of crops and brush from the pipeline route comes the same week in which condemnation hearings are scheduled to begin in Jasper County between Dakota Access — a subsidiary of Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners — and local landowners who have not signed voluntary land use easements with the pipeline company.

Parks seeing boom in usage Maytag Pool numbers up this season By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Activities are abundant in Newton city parks and more people than ever are out seeing what is available. Parks administrator Nathan Unsworth has seen a very active summer for the parks so far, especial-

ly at Maytag Pool. “The pool has been a very busy place this summer. We are expecting our attendance and revenue to be up over the past few seasons,” Unsworth said. “We had a very warm start to summer, which drove pool pass sales. The warm weather has persisted with only a few days where the pool has been closed due to the weather.” While it is great to have numbers up, Un-

sworth said the city does not treat the pool as a revenue source. The goal of the pool, besides providing a fun, cost-effective activity for families, is to cover the operational costs associated with the facility. Any additional revenue will go back into the general fund, Unsworth said. “Typically, the pool comes very close to covering the operational costs each year,” Unsworth said. PARKS | 7A
