Elderly Nutrition renews two contracts By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Two long-standing agreements with Jasper County Elderly Nutrition were renewed on Tuesday. The Jasper County Board of Supervisors approved contracts with Skiff Medical Center and the Colfax Community Senior Citizens Center for services provided to the program. Skiff Medical Center was approved to continue preparing meals for the Home Delivered Meals program on Saturdays and Sundays and on Thanksgiving day and Christmas day. Two meals are prepared and delivered per day to the clients at a price of $6 each for weekend meals and $5 each on the holidays. “That is for our elderly waver clients,” project manager Kelli VanManen said. “It remains the same as it has been for many years.” The meals consist

NCT director claims statewide award Worthington gets best direction honor for ‘Dreamcoat’ By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Melinda Worthington received an individual award recently, but she hardly was one to take personal credit for how it happened. Worthington was chosen for a 2016 Iowa Community Theatre Association honor for best direction for last year’s Newton Community Theatre production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” She said it’s important to realize any honor bestowed upon a director is also a credit to the cast and crew, and sometimes many

others. “You never work alone,” Worthington said. “There are always a lot of people needed to make a quality production happen.” Two of the people Worthington credits for that particular NCT production were co-director Cindy Healy, who shared technical direction duties with her son, Tom and Cathi Wickett who handled the music direction. All three received finalist honors for this year’s ICTA awards, as did many others who worked on the play. “I’m not real clear on all of the exact criteria,” Worthington said. “But basically, what happens is two critics come down to watch two separate productions, and decide on award nominations based on what they see.” Worthington was the only finalist from the Newton Community Theatre to then be chosen for a “best” award this year.

The longtime NCT director said the top-six performances reflect both hard work and talent. “I was happy to see we had so many in the top six,” Worthington said. “We really had a marvelous cast for ‘Joseph.’” This is hardly the first honor for Worthington, who has been directing productions for many years. In the fall of 2013, she received an American Association of Community Theatre Spotlight Award, given annually to an outstanding community theatre volunteer. Worthington began attending NCT productions with her parents in the early 1970s and has run a summer youth theater workshop since 1997. of a meat or meat alternative including beef, pork, fish, fowl, lunch meats, eggs or cheese, two vegetables and one fruit, three servings of bread or a bread alternative, butter or margarine, milk or an alternative drink and dessert. Modified meals for special diets may be provided upon request. The Colfax Community Senior Citizens Center was also renewed to hold daily meals for elderly nutrition. The county will pay $200 each month in rent for use of the center. On average, the center serves 50 to 100 people, Monday through Friday, during the noon meal service. Meals are not served on weekends or holidays. Elderly Nutrition has been serving residents of Jasper County since 1976. The program provides on site NUTRITION | 3A

Hot track

Photos by Jason W. Brooks/ Daily News Midwest Tennis & Track foreman Tim Cass tapes down material along the east side of the track. In February, the Newton Community School District decided to resurface the track at H.A. Lynn Stadium, with Midwest Tennis & Track of Denison chosen among three bidders for the project at a cost of about $71,000. The work began this week, despite sweltering summer temperatures, and is expected to be completed late this week or early next week. The stadium is closed to the public during the project.
