Race fans delighted with first weekend at Iowa Speedway By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Race fans enjoyed all the Iowa Speedway had to offer on Saturday and Sunday. From fans less than a year old to those who have seen more than a few races, everyone enjoyed the first race of the season. “We like it down here. It’s nice coming down and getting away with just my son,” Dan Matykiewicz said. Matykiewicz along with his son Daniel came from Stacy, Minn., just north of the twin cities, to celebrate Father’s Day weekend. The two were enjoying a friendly game of bags prior to Saturday’s race. It was the third year the duo has come to Newton for a race weekend and they hope to come back for another race this year. “We’ll come back maybe for the July weekend race hopefully,” Matykiewicz said. Bags was one of the many activities fans had the opportunity to participate in before the flag dropped. New this year, the Speedway increased the size of entertainment for the fans on the concourse. One of the new games had fans climbing on a giant pool table and using their feet to kick “pool balls” in the form of painted soccer balls into the pockets. Young fans Hunter Fasse, Jacobie Garland and Brody Magruder took in a game but found it a little more challenging than they expected. “These are soccer balls, which makes it way more harder,” Fasse said. Other enlarged games at the Speedway included the classics checkers and Connect Four. Games

NCSD teacher salaries determined through arbitration Other salaries determined through direct discussions By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Last week’s announcements by Newton Community School District budget administrators about budget cuts did involve some autonomous decisions from the district, but its biggest salary expenditure increase for Fiscal 2017 did not come entirely from district leaders. After exchanging an initial proposal and counter-proposal publicly in early March, the
district and the Newton Community Educators Association proceeded through the typical closed-door steps of union contract negotiations. The teachers and the district went to arbitration as one of the steps of resolving the differences it had with the district in reaching a settlement, which ended with teachers receiving a 3.25 overall compensation (salary plus benefits) increase for the 2016-17 school year.
The teachers opened with a 6.5 percent pay increase proposal. The district countered with 2 percent, and the 3.25 percent increase was the compromise issued after arbitration hearings. The increase adds about $560,000 to the district’s expenses for 2016-17 for teachers alone, while the Iowa legislature and Gov. Terry Branstad only provided school districts with a 2.25 percent increase in funding, which meant $178,000 in new money to Newton. That meant the NCSD would ARBITRATION | 3A
