Practicing sun safety was one area of focus Public Health Coordinator Lisa Damman touched on at the Jasper County Board of Health meeting on Thursday. The Jasper County Health Department received a grant to purchase sunscreen and Damman explained how it has been put to use. “I have taken one gallon to the Maytag Pool and was able to post a sign about sun safety,” Damman said. The bottle has a pump attached to it and is available for patrons of the pool who may have forgot their sunscreen or need a little extra. The sign with information from the Iowa Cancer Consortium warns that skin cancer is
the most common type of cancer in Iowa and that anyone is susceptible to the disease. It goes to read that most cases can be prevented by practicing the five steps of sun safety, slipping on a shirt, slopping on sunscreen, slapping on a hat, sliding on sunglasses and seeking shade. “I was also able to meet with eight or nine of the lifeguards and was able to give the education and talk to them about the importance of using sunblock,” Damman said. “Also, getting kids whose parents just dropped them off, having them use the sunblock. They were really tickled and already asked about if they need more. I’m glad to know they are being positive and encouraging.” SUN SAFETY | 3A

gaps in the mental-health coverage network of central Iowa. “As a director, it is exciting to expand services into an area that needs it,” Smith said. “Capstone has a great team of professionals that work together to ensure that the needs of persons with mental health issues can receive the services that they need.” Smith recently received the unanimous approval of the Capstone board of directors to proceed with the expansion, along the funding appoval of Central Iowa Community Services.
