race, according to unofficial election tallies released Tues-
day night by the Jasper County Auditor’s Office. Current two-term Jasper County Supervisor Denny Stevenson, a Democrat, announced he would not seek reelection in December, leaving the seat an open race. “I’m excited,” Shaver said. “I am happy to get the chance to run this fall for the seat and be able to help the people of Jasper County.” This is the second run for
Shaver, who previously ran in 2008 before pulling out of the race and supporting eventual winner Stevenson. The retired, lifelong Newton resident announced her intentions to run in January, first among all competitors. Cupples was pleased with his victory. “First, I want to thank God, my family and friends for being there for me and voting for me. I thank my opponent, Mark,

for being a great opponent and a great guy. He worked hard,” Cupples said. “I also want to congratulate Sandy Shaver. It should be a good race.” Cupples also ran for the position in 2012, but was defeated by incumbent Stevenson. He currently works at Lauterbach Buick GMC as a sales associate and is a pastor at Iron Sharpens Iron Church. SUPERVISORS | 3A
Duffy wins race to face Heartsill in District 28 DeWaard received more votes among Jasper voters By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News
to bring that passion and energy together.” Kelley narrowly won a hotly contested special convention nomination for the seat in 2010 after the sudden death of Paul Bell in 2010. He went on to win the District 29 general election in 2010, 2012 and 2014. “I’d really like to thank all my volunteers and supporters,” Kelley said. “They’re very hard-working. Of course, I respect the voters’ decision.”
Knoxville resident Marty Duffy won the Iowa House District 28 Democratic nomination Tuesday, outpacing fellow Pleasantville candidate Lois DeWaard in a low-turnout primary. District 28, which encompasses territory in Jasper, Lucas and Marion counties, only had 111 Democrats vote in Jasper County. DeWaard outpaced Duffy in Jasper by a 66-55 margin, but overall, Duffy won the race by a 364219 count. Duffy Duffy will face incumbent Greg Heartsill in the November general election. Heartsill, who is going for his third term in office, was unopposed in the primary cycle this year. DeWaard found it surprising that Jasper County voters favored her, though she didn’t sound surprised Duffy took the race. Duffy took Marion County by more than a 2-to-1 margin, 290 to 128. “We’ve already spoken tonight,” DeWaard said Tuesday evening, referring to Duffy. “I feel it was a well-run race, and it has helped make Marty a better general election candidate.” Duffy, a Knoxville High School teacher, made an effort to starkly contrast himself from Heartsill on policy issues a May 19 candidate forum. He reiterated some of those stances in a phone interview Tuesday evening, and said area Democrats have pressed him for exactly how he plans to defeat the incumbent. “He’s going to have plenty of money,” Duffy said regarding Heartsill. “People want someone who can come with solutions and different approaches in Des Moines right away. That’s why I’m glad Lois was so gracious and

Challenger takes Democratic nomination by 2-to-1 margin By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News When Wes Breckenridge chatted with supporters Tuesday evening during a gathering, he looked happy — but he also looked relieved. After a grueling primary campaign that included several twists and turns, Breckenridge
defeated three-term incumbent Dan Kelley for the Democratic nomination for the Iowa House District 29 seat. Breckenridge, who received 1,585 votes, outpaced Kelley by about a 2-to-1 margin; Kelley finished with 841 votes. There were only two write-in votes. Breckenridge moves on to face Republican Patrick
Payton in the November general election. Payton was unopposed in the Republican primary. “This has been a very emotional, passionate election for Democrats,” Breckenridge said. “It shows a lot of people care, and want to solve problems. Now that the primary is over, it’s time
Reconstruction begins on South Second Avenue West By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Work is underway the $1.18 million reconstruction of South Second Avenue in Newton Tuesday. Located between West Third Street South and West Fourth Street South, the new road will have a similar look to the reconstructed North Fourth Avenue, integrating the city’s downtown streetscape design
plan. As portions of the road are under construction, periodic road closures will take place. Areas the road is closed will be marked by signage throughout the process and detours will be available. Plans for the road changed slightly from the initial design of parallel parking. Angle parking will be retained on the western most block to accommodate
businesses in the area. “With the diagonal parking, we looked at the width of the stalls and they are not a wide as they should be. To get the current widths, we end up losing three spaces instead of six,” Laube said. Additional drainage concerns were raised for the area because of the retention of the angle parking.
