Ty Rushing/Daily News Wallace Schermerhorn and Paul Brown, local veterans and officers of Newton American Legion Post 111, have been placing flags on veterans graves all over Newton recently for Memorial Day. This is something Schermerhorn has done annually. The vets are hoping Saturday’s flag sale at Hy-Vee can help them keep this going.

“Without memories, there is no honor.” Strong words from Paul Brown, chosen to help decorate veterans’ graves in Newton with miniature American flags. Brown, a Vietnam War veteran and a ranking member of Newton American Legion Post 111, was at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Newton on Monday, along with his fellow veterans and Legion members Wallace Schermerhorn and Dick Couch.

The trio were placing the flags as a way of honoring their fellow veterans. This was Brown and Couch’s first year helping place the flags, and this is something Schermerhorn began doing around six or seven years ago. “It’s rewarding. We’re paying back the men and women here in these graves. If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t have the freedoms we have today,” Schermerhorn said. Every year, for Memorial Day, Schermerhorn said he has been placing around 1,600
flags at four cemeteries in Newton — Sacred Heart, Palo Alto, Newton Union and Memorial Park — and considers it an honor and history lesson. “I grew up in town. I see names on here that I remember as a child, you know 65, 66 years ago,” Schermerhorn, who is 71, said. “We’ve walked among these men. A lot of these men, in these graves, have been in Honor Guard (or) American Legion members — friends of ours.”

The Jasper County Board of Supervisors approved a $2.5 million road resurfacing project Tuesday for County Highway T22/ Image Avenue near Kellogg. Jasper County Engineer Russ Stutt confirmed the project wouldn’t be paid for using local tax dollars but will be funded by county farm-to-market funds from the Iowa Department of Transportation. The project is expected to begin sometime this summer. Stutt also received approval for a number of other items for the Secondary Roads Department during the meeting. Des Moines-based Housby Mack was selected to provide the county with a new tandem straight truck at a cost of $82,703.92. A tandem is a heavy to medium duty truck capable of hauling up to 15 tons. To make better use of the new truck, the county also approved the purchase of a new dump truck body from Manchester-based Henderson Truck Equipment for $51,440. At Stutt’s suggestion, the board accepted a bid from Independent Salt, based out of Kanapolis, Kan., to supply the county’s rock salt for the 2014-15 winter season. Delivery begins in September 2014 and ends in May 2015. Independent was also the county’s salt provider for the current winter season. “We’ve had really good luck with them
