Get to Know Newton 250 City of Newton announced as title sponsor of speedway’s May 18 race Special to the Daily News

Iowa Speedway announced Thursday the City of Newton as the title sponsor of its May 18 NASCAR Nationwide Series race — the Get to Know Newton 250 presented by Sherwin-Williams — the highlight of the track’s much-anticipated “WideOpening Weekend.” New excitement and energy surround Iowa Speedway following NASCAR’s purchase of the track last fall, a fresh approach that is a natural fit with the City of Newton — the track’s hometown — and its recently-launched “Get to Know Newton” brand marketing campaign. “The City of Newton is, and has been, a tremendous supporter of Iowa Speedway since it was built,” said Jimmy Small, track president. “We consider this entitlement an investment in Newton and are excited to provide our community the opportunity to deliver its message in the national spotlight on a grand stage. “We’re extremely proud of this association with Newton and not only consider this an investment in our hometown, but also the fulfillment of a pledge made to the state of Iowa that NASCAR is committed to Iowa Speedway and its fans for the long-term, starting right here with our own community,” Small said. Mayor Michael Hansen expressed enthusiasm on behalf of Newton along with the opportunity to showcase its local products, businesses and events. The “Get to Know Newton 250” entitlement was donated by NASCAR and the Iowa Speedway. “Newton has so many great amenities — excellent

During Monday night’s meeting, the Newton City Council will have the third and final consideration of the two ordinances that will add 65 additional stop signs at intersections entering arterial and collector streets and remove yield signs at four different intersections. The council also will have a public hearing on a resolution instituting proceedings to take additional action for the issuance of up to $2,510,000 in general obligation bonds. This resolution will allow the city to move forward with the steps to issue the bonding. The bonding will cover TIF Projects and also refinance $1,000,000 of past city debt. Warm weather is just around the corner, and if you’re looking to brighten up your yard or a friends day, then the Newton Arboretum and Botanical Gardens will be a place you’ll want to stop by this weekend. Project AWAKE is hosting its annual plant sale to benefit the Newton Arboretum and Botanical Gardens from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the arboretum. This event is free admission. Since the arboretum is not a taxsupported entity and is supported completely by contributions, fundraisers are important to keep the arboretum in good condition. “The goal for the plant sale is more than just a fundraiser for the Newton Arboretum. We look at the Plant Sale as a way to encourage people to become gardeners, educate people on gardening basics and provide people with quality plants that they can plant in their own yards ensuring natural beauty throughout our community,” Newton Parks and Recreation Administrative Superintendent Nathan Unsworth said. Many florists, greenhouses and suppliers have donated plants and flowers to Project AWAKE. There will be perennials and annuals, hortas, shade plants, day lilies, ground cover, ornamental grass, house plants and herbs. SALE See Page 5A
