From 5 to 7 p.m. Barnstormer coaches and players will be on hand to sign autographs and take pictures, and Smokey himself will be on hand to meet community members. “I saw a news article about

Smokey and thought it would be a great way to get involved in the community of Newton,” Montana Mike’s owner Julie Lilly said. “I have sponsored them (the Barnstormers) for the last four years as one of their corporate sponsors. I approached them about the Smokey charity and they agreed to go on board with us.” Montana Mike’s, 1400 W. 18th St. S., will be donating 25 percent of the proceeds earned during that day to the fundraiser. NHS to open ‘fish bowl’ for exercise during final games By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News After a strong turnout and successful kickoff event, the Newton Wellness Coalition decided at its Wednesday meeting to continue the workout during the remaining home basketball games. Designated the “Healthy Home Team,” community members are invited to workout in the second floor gym — affectionately known as the fish bowl — during the final home games of the season. “We had at least a handful of people asking, ‘Can you do this all of the time?’ or ‘Why isn’t this open all of the time?’” coalition member Robyn Friedman said.

Following the requests, she spoke with athletic director Scott Garvis and superintendent Bob Callaghan to OK the idea with the school district and both agreed it was a great idea. Callaghan has participated in the workout kick-off event the past several years with the coalition. With the approval, the Wellness Coalition plans to have pilot dates for the program at three of the final basketball games. Those dates are the 6:15 p.m. girls varsity game and the 7:30 p.m. boys varsity game on Monday, the girls and boys varsity games at the same time on Tuesday and the 7:30 p.m. boys varsity game on Feb. 15. which started fundraising at the first of the month, will continue its efforts of donating $2 for every purchase of the brand. Raffles will also be held for Barnstormers merchandise throughout the evening. Also for sale are tickets to the May 7 Barnstormers game at $10 each with $5 from each ticket going to the K-9 Smokey fund. Tickets will be available for sale at Montana Mike’s. “K-9 Smokey is slated to be at the Iowa Barnstormers game on May 7, and we hope the Newton community SMOKEY | 3A

No raises for Newton school administrators this year Principal/VP assignments put three admins at Berg Complex By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Among the many adjustments the Newton Community School District is making as its embarks on a series of major facilities changes will be salaries. Even though annual budgeting and union negotiations are not fully underway, superintendent Bob Callaghan has made an announcement that should give the district more flexibility in several ways. “Based upon the (state legislature) funding formula that has been identified in the legislature, I have

A family of four narrowly escaped a Monday evening fire that destroyed their Newton home. The Newton Fire Department released details about the fire Wednesday morning. Less than 24 hours after the fire, relief efforts for the family were already underway. A GoFundMe account page has been set up for the family of Ryan Spidell and Noelle Matters and their two daughters, Summer and Kaylee. The home they are renting, located in the 600 block of East 10th Street North, caught on fire Monday at about 6:45 p.m., and the four of them, along with Noelle’s brother, Tyler, were barely able to get out of the house before flames consumed it, and most of their possessions and the home

were ruined. Kaylee, the older of the two children, has severe autism. The exact cause of the fire hasn’t been determined yet, as it started somewhere in the basement, near the furnace. Tuesday, Doug Cupples, a distant relative of Matters, became the Lauterbach Buick employee who ended up in charge of taking up a cash collection for the family. He didn’t say how much he had collected so far, but he said the amount people donated surprised him. “My co-workers have been very generous,” Cupples said. “It’s really warming to see people give so quickly in a time of need.” Cupples said anyone who has furniture, clothing or household items to donate can contact him through Lauterbach Buick and make
