Curtis says Clinton is who nation needs ‘when lives hinge’ Actress draws about 100 people Clinton coming to to Newton for brief appearance Berg Middle School By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Jamie Lee Curtis acknowledges there are huge political-landscape differences between California and Iowa, but that hasn’t stopped her from delivering a simple message. The actress spoke for about 20 minutes Monday afternoon at Hillary Clinton’s Newton field office, stumping for the Democratic presidential hopeful. Curtis is one of several celebrities who is traversing the highways of the state leading up to the Feb. 1 Iowa Caucuses.

“We are all fighting the same battle,” Curtis said while speaking to a group of about 100 people who attended the late-morning event. “I’m not going to cheer you on, and yell, ‘Give me an H.’” Curtis encouraged Clinton volunteers to keep knocking on doors and canvassing on behalf of the candidate she and many others support. Describing herself as a lifelong Democrat, Curtis, the daughter of actor Tony Curtis and actress Janet Leigh, said her mother was offered the role of ambassador to CURTIS | 3A

NCSD board approves 2016-17 agreement with YMCA By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News A short regular meeting of the Newton Community School District board of education was made even shorter Monday night, but there are plenty of special meetings slated for the weeks ahead. The main action the board took Monday night was to unanimously approve a 201617 agreement with the Newton YMCA that includes a small increase in the hourly rate charged to the district. The increase will go from $45 per hour to $50. Board vice president Travis Padget said it was presented “in a recent open, public forum” that the Newton YMCA allows Newton Schools the use of the YMCA swimming fa-

cilities free of charge. An exact total for any period of time was not readily available, but Padget said he wanted to make it very clear that the district pays for the use of the pool. The Newton/Colfax-Mingo/Pella “Aquagirls” and the Newton High School boys swim team both use the Newton YMCA facility. “I just want to make it clear that we pay for that service,” Padget said. “If we’re costing them more money than we’re giving them, then we need to discuss that. But we’re not leaving them unfunded. It was presented during a request for funds that it (allowing high school team use) is something they do for the community.” SCHOOL | 3A

Council holds first budget workshop By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Budget talks continue for the Newton City Council, with the group looking inhouse for updates and future plans from city departments at a budget workshop on Monday. No major projects were introduced to be funded in the coming year as the city is continuing work from the past two years of bonding. “The general budget for 2016-2017 is really light in capital, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t working on quite a bit of capital,” said Bryan Friedman, the city’s director of finance and development. He said the main for of the next year’s capital budget is finishing up the spending of the 2014 and 2015 bonds. Those bonds were designed to span multiple year purchases.

Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News The Newton City Council heard from department heads and city staff at its first budget workshop on Monday. Further budget talks will continue at the next council meeting on Feb. 2 and potentially at a future budget workshop.

“Quite a bit has been purchased and projects have been done, but there is still quite a bit of work left,” Friedman said. One request that was not actually made, but suggested, was the addition of one full-time firefighter by Newton Fire Chief Jarrod Wellik. “Last year, we decided to start a part-time program. I’m glad to say the people we have

pulled in to the program are very good and have provided a great service to the citizens,” Wellik said. “One issue we’ve had is we’ve seen about a 45 percent turnover rate within those people.” Wellik said the turnover rate along with recent injuries have caused somewhat of a staffing shortage. He said he worked with Friedman to see if a full-time position would work within the budget. The new

position would be feasible for the next fiscal year Friedman said, but he was not sure beyond that. The council requested asked that a plan be presented at a future meeting so it can consider a new full-time position. Meanwhile, a 94cent debt service levy increase will be implemented. BUDGET | 3A
