Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News Sheriff deputies and officers from the Newton Police Department work near the Jasper County Courthouse during a bomb threat situation on Thursday. Following the evacuation of the building and search by law enforcement and maintenance staff, an all clear was given about a half an hour after the original call.

Nothing suspicious found during search By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office is investigating a bomb threat issued to the Jasper County Courthouse Thursday morning. The building was evacuated shortly following the call at approximately 10:30 a.m., Jasper County Sheriff John

Halferty said, with an all clear given at approximately 11 a.m. The call was made to a 911 line indicating there was a bomb in the building. Upon receiving the call, additional agencies were notified including courthouse security, the courthouse offices, Newton Police and Fire Departments along with sheriff ’s office.

A decision was made to evacuate the courthouse and a search of the building was conducted by law enforcement officials and maintenance staff. Nothing suspicious was found or noted during the search and just a half an hour after the original call, the all clear was given and daily business resumed at the courthouse. A visual difference during this bomb threat was the appearance of military uniformed officers. Halferty said the officers were actually sheriff ’s deputies who

were returning from a drug search warrant. “Our tactical team had just completed a drug search warrant and happened to be close, so we diverted them to assist,” Halferty said. “Normally, they would have been in a sheriff ’s department uniform, but they just happened to be conducting the search warrant.” The investigation into the threat is ongoing. NCT prepares Iowa Community Theatre Festival production Newton Daily News Members of the Newton Community Theatre are preparing its production for entry in the Iowa Community Theatre Festival. The community of Newton will have a chance to see “Pvt. Wars” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the theatre for a freewill donation. The festival performance will be at 1:30 p.m. March 17 at the Marshalltown Community Theatre. “Pvt. Wars” is by James McLure and is rated R. The production is directed by John Dougan

and has a cast of Lonnie Appleby, Conor Fudge and Scott Schaeffer. Crew members are Sue Beukema, Linda Dougan, Amy McGhghy and Mel Wilson. The story is about three GIs recovering from Vietnam injuries, whiling away their time on the terrace of an Army hospital. Gately, a hillbilly, fiddles compulsively with a disemboweled radio. Silvio is a streetwise, big-city type, while Natwick is a pris-

sy “rich kid” from Long Island, writes letters to his mother telling her how much he wants to become a close friend of Gately. The play blends these into a meaningful mosaic as the three tease, torment, entertain, exasperate and, on occasion, solace each other — maintaining throughout a hilarity, which belies their deep concern about the uncertainties of the civilian world to that they will soon be returning.
