Homicide investigation underway in Newton death Newton Daily News The Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office is investigating the murder of a 61-year-old Newton man after officials received a 911 call to a home Monday afternoon in reference to an unresponsive individual. When law enforcement and Newton Fire and EMS arrived at 4252 Maple St. in Newton, they
found Jose Luis C. Ramirez Berber lying on the floor unresponsive. It was determined the death was suspicious and on Wednesday the sheriff ’s office and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation ruled the death a homicide. Authorities declined to release the cause of death and the 911 call at this time, citing the ongoing investigation. The Office of the State Medi-
cal Examiner was requested to conduct an autopsy on Ramirez Berber. According to the Jasper County Assessor’s site, Ramirez Berber is the contract buyer of the residence at 4252 Maple Street. If anyone has any information in the death of the victim, they are asked to contact the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office at 641792-5912.
A nearly $33 million county budget was passed by the Jasper County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. Like the past few years, the budget keeps the tax levy Parrott rate stable at $11.63. “The board is getting redundant, they are getting non-exciting. What I mean by that is they are keeping the levy again at what it was last year, which is good news for all of us,” Jasper County Auditor Dennis Parrot said. “Historically with boards, at least since I have been in the auditor’s office, they have been able to keep the levy down.” The budget also includes a 2.75 percent wage increase for the offices of county auditor,
attorney, recorder, treasurer and sheriff and a 1.99 percent increase for the board themselves. It was the first time in eight years that the board took a wage increase, due in part to keeping the office’s wages competitive within the state when figuring the total population of the county. Also approved was a resolution approving the Secondary Roads Fiscal Year 2018 budget and construction plan. The budget comes in at an estimated $13 million, up about $500,000 from the previous year. “We did receive some notification on the Highway F17 bridge. Originally, we had scheduled that for a restoration but at the costs that are coming in today, it is 86 percent of the bridge, so the recommendations are that we do a new bridge,” assistant to the engineer Pam Olson said. “It was originally slated at about $750,000 but now it will be $1.5 million.” BUDGET | 3A
Jasper County Veterans Affairs talks tour bus, approves advertising By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News The Jasper County Commission of Veterans Affairs gathered for its regular meeting Wednesday afternoon at the County Annex Building.
Director Kurt Jackson reviewed the status of the commission’s tour bus to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown on March 15. The bus is paid for through the county, and lunches will be provided for the tour group, he said.
The veterans home provides long-term care for veterans and their spouses or widows. At the time of the meeting, 30 out of the 36 seats on the bus had been filled. The commission approved $500 to go toward Jerry Yellin’s stop

in Jasper County in April. Yellin is a retired Army Air Corps captain who served in World War II. His visit will include a stop at Newton DMACC and is open to the public. Yellin is sharing his story to help veterans who are battling
post-traumatic stress disorder. Jasper County Treasurer Doug Bishop briefly joined the meeting via speakerphone to go over the logistics of Yellin’s visit, which will include stops at area schools in Baxter and Newton.
Mental health counselors and veterans activists will also be available during Yellin’s stop in Jasper County, Bishop said. In other business, the commission approved VETERANS | 3A
NFD receives donation from Windstream
By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News To continue the city’s goal of providing a safe community, 10 new intersections are being addressed through additional signage. City council approved the first reading of an ordinance adding stop signs at “T” intersections, nine of which were previously uncontrolled. “Citizens have expressed safety concerns at the intersection of West Fourth Street South and South 20th Avenue West,” interim city administrator Jarrod Wellik said. “Citizens comment that the speed of northbound traffic at this intersection sometimes exceed the posted speed limit and that visibility for eastbound traffic looking south is slightly compromised due to topography. This creates a safety concern for stopped eastbound traffic turning north.” The south leg of the inter-
section is gravel and city limits is a few hundred feet south of the intersection. The speed limit for traffic near the intersection is 35 mph. The Traffic Safety Committee suggested adding stops signs on northbound and southbound traffic West Fourth Street South at South 20th Avenue West, making it an all-way stop intersection. Currently, eastbound traffic stops. SIGNS | 3A
