Thanksgiving is a time for family, food and reflection. For high school football coaches, it signals the end of what, for them at least, marks a very long season.

From the time that the Illinois High School Association’s football season ends the weekend after Thanksgiving Day, prep coaching staffs have very little time to kick back and enjoy the fruits of their labor before starting all over again. The regular season runs nine weeks and goes roughly from the end of August through the end of October, but the work that goes into that stretch goes far longer than that.

Especially for a high school with a successful program like the one at Morris.

“Typically, we usually give the kids a week off and then they are right back in the weight room,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “It’s been pretty much the same since I’ve been head coach and going back to Coach (George) Dergo. Maybe two

weeks off, but then they go right back into the weight room.”

Morris fullback Austin Laurie says that’s the biggest thing for kids who are transitioning from youth league football to the high school game.

“In high school, football goes from being a fall sport to an all-year-round sport,” he said. “Even though you play for the fall, the rest of the year is wrapped up in lifting and conditioning.”

Weightlifting and running are the focus of the offseason, but then football activity starts almost the minute the school season is over.

“It’s the first week in June when the first ‘real’ football activity starts,” Thorson said.

Essentially, what that means is helmets and shorts and the onset of the 7-on-7 football season.

Though it is widely acknowledged as ‘not real football’ per say, it does have certain benefits in regards to being a beneficial summer activity.

“You take it with a grain of salt. One of the

benefits if that the quarterbacks and receivers are getting their reps, and the defense can work on coverage,” Thorson said. “But there’s no line and no tackling, so it’s not real football.

“The biggest thing is that the kids get the chance to compete against someone who is not their teammates. To me, I like to see that competitive nature coming out.”

It is the first stage of summer football activities that will lead to the team being ready for the opening game — this year at home against Minooka at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 30.

“The most important thing about working the kids in the summer is seeing which kids want to put the work in,” Thorson said. “Attendance is not an issue, so that is the No. 1 thing about the summer. Conditioning is again a big thing in the summer because we want to be as bigger, stronger and faster as possible. Then we have our allowable contact days in which we filter in

the offense and defense.”

Each team in Illinois is allowed 25 contact days in which tackling and hitting is permissible.

Thorson said that the age of the players often dictates how much is expected of them in the summer.

“The freshmen have their camp in the second week in June and then, as sophomores, we ask

them to pick up the pace a little,” Thorson said.

“Obviously, by the time they are on the varsity team, it is a huge commitment. For a team to be competitive in football these days, the kids have to put the work in during the offseason.”

The offseason now runs all summer, except for the Fourth of July and then the 11 days off that the IHSA mandates before the start of

the actual school year.

“It’s a time commitment for everybody as we try to put the pieces together,” Thorson said.

“I can tell you there are some summer days that I’d like to be golfing or fishing, so the dedication has to be there.

“The one thing that we emphasize to the kids is that what we ask of them through the summer is a few hours and that is usually early in the morning. That leaves the kids time to then go out and be kids.”

Morris structures its summer to finish with a padded camp that runs the week leading up to the IHSA dead period.

“The 14th of August is our first day of real football,” Thorson said. “At least it’s the start of the season.”

It’s a mammoth undertaking that schools like Morris have just had to learn to accept as part of the deal.

“It seems like ever year it gets bigger and bigger,” Thorson said. “I have to credit the kids for their work in the offseason for our success.

If the kids don’t work like that, it would have a tremendous negative effect on our program.” n

A real kick

Your flip-flops are all packed away.

You loved them so much. Wearing them felt like going barefoot, so they were the first shoes you grabbed whenever you went anywhere.

They were your favorite color and they were worn in just the right spots. Putting them on was like donning a favorite old sweater. Oh, how you loved that slap-slap-slap.

And now your flip-flops are packed away and you’re wearing shoes that are warmer and more school-approved - or maybe, like Taylor McNamara, you’ve got boots. But in the new book “Barn Boot Blues”

by Catherine Friend, Taylor’s troubles kicked off with an ugly pair of footwear…

“Discombobulated” is a good word, unless it has to do with yourself.

That’s what Taylor McNamara decided, because that’s what she was: discombobulated. Off-balance.

Weird. Not quite right. It started when her parents packed up all their stuff and moved from Minneapolis (population 400,000) to Melberg (population 7,380) and a farm (population 77, including three humans) – a farm that was not exactly where 12-year-old Taylor wished to be.

But, determined to make the best of things, she was eager to start school – that is, until the first day. That was when she forgot that she had on her ugly old barn boots and the bus came early. Wearing brown rubber boots all day is hot, but not the kind of hot you want to be when you’re in middle school.

Still, Taylor managed to make friends and most of them totally understood why she missed Minneapolis. There was no cable TV on the farm. The goats were smelly, the chickens pooped everywhere, and animals die on the farm. Taylor was homesick, quick, so her friends devised a plan to help her get back to the city.

If Taylor, who was once a good student, could learn to misbehave, maybe her parents would re-think that stupid farm business.

If she could somehow prove that this move was not a good thing, then maybe they’d go back to the city. Operation TEFF (Taylor Escapes From Farm) began, and Taylor became a teacher’s worst nightmare.

And then something horrible happened, followed by something wonderfully magical. Was being booted off the farm really what she wanted?

Looking for something that’s lacking in teenage angst? Then here’s the book you want: high on cute, low on hysterics, and featuring zero profanity, “Barn Boot Blues” is perfect for the middle-schooler who believes theatrics are best left for the stage.

With barely a hint of drama, in fact, author Catherine Friend’s main character, Taylor, tells her own story of change, and the nice surprises you get when you relax and embrace it. Readers will enjoy the supporting cast in this book (even the nasty ones, I think), and parents will appreciate that Friend gives Taylor enough maturity to inspire but enough kid-ness to maintain believability.

While this book can undoubtedly be enjoyed by tween-age boys, I think 10-to-13-year-old girls will better appreciate it (and so will their parents). For them, “Barn Boot Blues” is a real kick. n

‘Linking education with industry’ Morris Community High School’s new Industrial Technology leader has brought the department to new levels and plans on continuing to take it higher.

Mark Smith recently completed his first year at Morris High, where he started a new curriculum and made new partnerships between the school and industrial companies, resulting in new equipment for the program.

“The name of the game is either (the students) go to college or get a job.

We want the program here to benefit both the college-bound students and students bound for a career (after graduation),” said Smith.

Smith’s philosophy is “linking education with industry.” The time in his program is more than just learning, but also gaining experience.

Smith started his career in the industrial field before he began teaching

Industrial Technology for about 11 years. He then took a job as national director of WoodLINKS USA, which works to create partnerships between industry and education to increase the personnel entering the wood manufacturing industry.

“He’s really focused on skills and industrial preparation and wants these kids to not only be ready academically and have the skill base, but he wants them to already have the connections in the industry,” said Principal Kelly Hussey.

Once word got around the industry that Smith was teaching again, he got calls almost immediately asking if he had students who were available for hire yet.

“Having industry partnerships brings a number of things to the table for the school, the students and the program,” said Smith.

Through a partnership Industrial Technology teacher forged with Taylor Guitars, students in the Wood Technology class were able to build guitars, learning about safety, material handling, accurate measuring, problem solving, separation and combination processes and finishing in the process (opposite page).

One of the most important aspects is creating connections for students to line up jobs for them either as internships or positions after graduation.

Another is using the companies as resources for the school. In his first year of teaching, Smith was able to obtain about $290,000 in supplies, equipment and other resources from industrial connections.

To start the 2013-2014 school year, the program will be getting a $40,000 Computer Numerical Control machine through Laguna Tools.

Laguna Tools is donating $33,000 to the school for the final cost of a $40,000 industry-ready CNC machine. The high school is paying for the remaining $7,000 through another resource, as well as for the shipping.

the future, so there is a real need to educate students and get them excited about it,” said Catherine Helshoj, vice president of Laguna Tools.

The machine is expected to be at Morris High by the end of July.

“It is exciting to know our kids are getting this level of opportunity,” said Hussey.

Since Smith took over and added a guitar project to the Wood Technology class, the enrollment in the class has doubled.

Through a company called Taylor Guitars, which he was introduced to through his previous job at WoodLINKS, Smith was able to obtain all the materials for the guitars. Then the students build the instruments, learning about safety, material handling, accurate measuring, problem solving, separation and combination processes, and finishing.

Logan Rund, who is a senior this school year, took two classes with Smith last year.

“Its always fun and it’s one of the classes you always look forward to going to. There are not too many dull moments in his class and it is always hands on,” he said.

He enjoyed working with the new spray guns Smith obtained.

Prior to taking classes with Smith, a job in manufacturing was not something Rund pictured for himself.

“I never really thought about going into production as a career before the class, but definitely after last year I’ve put it in the top three of possible careers for me,” he said.

OTHER ADDITIONS In preparation for the next school year, Smith is doing some remodeling of the shop to make bigger

classroom space for the kids. He is doing the labor himself, with the help of some students who are volunteering during their summer break.

“It will be very industrial looking. Not like a classroom for English, “ said Smith.

Also new this year is the Industrial Technology program will be adding dual credit options for credit at Joliet Junior College.

It’s Smith’s goal to begin taking students to

industrial trade shows so students can meet with the program’s industrial supporters and thank them personally, as well as fundraise for more donations to the program.

“It helps students develop ownership to the program,” he said. n

On the road to savings Area school districts turn to transportation to cut costs In the throes of a tough economy, many school districts have had to tighten their belts.

The trick has been to find ways to keep cuts as far away from the classroom as possible.

That’s led some local districts to make subtle, cost-saving changes to transportation.

Minooka Grade School Dist. 201, which has won a Bright Star Award for high academic achievement with low operating cost, has replaced three of its buses with propanefueled vehicles.

This, Superintendent Al Gegenheimer said, could save the district 20 to 25 percent on

fuel costs and $30,000 on the cost of buses.

“We were already very efficient,” Gegenheimer said. “But we’re always looking for ways to be more efficient.”

Gegenheimer said the district spends about $7,500 per student each year, which calculates to a mere $43 per student every day.

“We’re pretty trim right now,” Gegenheimer said.

But things can always improve — especially in an economic climate with declining revenues.

“I think whether it’s this economy or a boom economy, we should be efficient,” Gegenheimer said. “There shouldn’t be a lot of excess.”

The three propane buses — part of an overall fleet of 77 — are said to be more fuel-efficient and sustainable. A sustainable transportation grant from the federal government will reduce the cost of the buses by 20 percent.

Propane is cheaper, and should reduce operating costs.

“That’s really why we did it,” Gegenheimer said, adding that the estimates are conservative and may save more. “We think it’s going to be better.”

Nearby Aux Sable Liquid Products, who also produces propane, brought up the possibility of switching to propane buses to the district.

Morris Elementary Dist. 54, Saratoga Elementary Dist. 60C, and Morris Community High School Dist. 101 will share a single bus fleet that will serve all three districts.

The schools had already shared special education transportation, and Dist. 54 and the high school already shared busing through Illinois Central School Bus. Saratoga has it’s own fleet, and the districts believe they will save significant money by using them as a provider.

Gegenheimer and the board did research, and learned numerous school districts around the country have switched to propane.

If the savings estimates prove accurate, Gegenheimer said, the district will look to purchase more.

“This is a trial year,” Gegenheimer said.

“We’re going to see how it goes. We think it will be successful.”

In Morris, school districts are making some changes of their own to their transportation systems, which they expect to save money and keep teachers in front of students.

This fall, the districts will embark on the first year of their new shared busing program.

Minooka Grade School Dist. 201 and Minooka High School also have a transportation agreement — the two districts share a bus storage facility.

This fall, they’ll store their buses at a new facility at the old 84 Lumber location in Minooka.

“Our two districts work together to save taxpayers’ money,” Gegenheimer said. “The high school has been a great partner.” n
