Anew, old life begins for one once-dead forensic analyst-turned-small town sporting goods store clerk with a dark secret. After his life in New York state as Jim Lindsay unraveled, the past has come back to haunt Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall, “Six Feet Under”) in “Dexter: Resurrection.” The first two episodes of the series are available to stream now on Paramount+ with the Showtime plan, with their broadcast network debut taking place Sunday, July 13, on Paramount+ with Showtime.
In the series, Dexter makes a narrow escape from the events of “Dexter: New Blood” and sets off towards New York City, in part to try to reach his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott, “The Good Lord Bird”). Having been tipped off that Dexter is still alive and that he is likely to have been responsible for the Bay Harbour Butcher murders in Miami years ago, Angel Batista (David Zayas, “The Bear”), now captain of homicide of the Miami Metro Police, heads north to confront his former colleague.
In an official trailer for the series, Batista surprises Dexter as he is recovering in hospital from a nearly lethal gunshot wound, revealing that he is on to the former blood splatter analyst for what he did in Florida a lifetime ago. The jig is up, and Dexter’s only way forward is to evade investigation. He makes himself a smaller fish in a bigger pond, slipping out of his meeting with Batista, grabbing a car and starting the short journey to the most populous city in the United States: New York City.
The thrill of completely shedding the facade of normalcy he had been keeping up as Jim makes New York a playground for Dexter. Inhabiting himself again and letting the dark passenger loose has Dexter grappling with his psyche. Appearing to him again is the spirit of his father, Harry Morgan (James Remar, “Magnum P.I.”), who taught him the code he kills by and now tries to talk sense into Dexter about being careful.
It isn’t long before his presence in the city is felt by an eccentric with a gruesome hobby. Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”) stars as mysterious billionaire venture capitalist Leon Prater, whose macabre interest in serial killers moves him to have his head of security, Charley (Uma Thurman, “Super Pumped”), extend an invitation to Dexter to visit his manor.
He is not alone on his visit to Leon’s residence. A literal murderers row has been assembled for a grim salon. Lowell (Neil Patrick Harris, “Uncoupled”), Gareth (David Dastmalchian, “Oppenheimer,” 2023), Al (Eric Stonestreet, “American Auto”) and Mia (Krysten Ritter, “Orphan Black: Echoes”) have assembled at the manor, all
seemingly unrepentant serial murderers living far enough below the radar to be there to meet the killer of killers.
“Dexter: Resurrection” also stars Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (“The Lincoln Lawyer”) as rideshare driver Blessing Kamara; Kadia Saraf (“The Better Sister”) as Det. Claudette Wallace; Dominic Fumusa (“Nurse Jackie”) as Det. Melvin Oliva; and Emilia Suarez (“Up Here”) as Harrison’s friend Elsa Rivera. Also back from the dead in guest roles to revive characters from the original series are John Lithgow (“The Old Man”) as Arthur Mitchell, the Trinity Killer; Jimmy Smits (“Obi-Wan Kenobi”) as Miguel Prado, the assistant district attorney with a dark secret; and Erik King (“The Good Fight”) as Det. James Doakes, long thought to be the Bay Harbour Butcher.
While his father lets loose among questionable company, Harrison must come to terms with everything he learned about himself when he reconnected with Dexter. Maintaining as normal a life as he can manage, Harrison gets a job at a hotel where he meets Elsa. However, an or-
dinary existence may not be possible for him after all. The trailer features glimpses of Harrison dragging what looks like a plastic-wrapped body through a restaurant kitchen, swinging a cleaver, dressed in an apron.
Dexter Morgan’s resurrection comes after he faked his death in the finale of the original “Dexter,” then was revealed to have been living low as Jim in “Dexter: New Blood.” In Iron Lake, New York, Dexter had been living like a man in recovery as Jim, honoring the routine of daily life that kept his deepest desires at bay. A tense moment forced him to live, once again, by the code he thought he could suppress, sending his new life into a spiral.
The unexpected arrival of Harrison, the expectations of fatherhood that came with him and Dexter’s own crimes scratching the surface of long-buried secrets in Iron Lake combined in an explosive finale. Father and son, both plagued by murderous tendencies, dramatically part ways — Harrison in hopes of living a different, better life than Dexter.
Resuscitating their relationship is central to “Dexter: Resurrection,” Hall told Vanity Fair in April. “Harrison revealed himself to be, and remains, an all-the-more potent connection to Dexter’s tiny sense of humanity. He craves it, in spite of himself, so it’s a major bolt of thread running through his interior life and the life of the season.”
Don’t miss the new series “Dexter: Resurrection,” with the first two episodes of the series available to stream now on Paramount+ with the Showtime plan. The series’ broadcast network debut takes place Sunday, July 13, on Paramount+ with Showtime.

National parks are a hot topic right now in the United States. With the news that more than 1,000 National Parks Service (NPS) employees were laid off in early 2025 during Trump-presidency cutbacks (per AP News), discussions circling public safety, maintenance and park operating hours have been more plentiful and more public than ever before. And while national parks are still a great way to return to nature and feel a part of a larger whole — or even just a wonderful outing for a family picnic — the truth is that American national parks are now less equipped to handle the injuries, missing persons cases and occasional deaths that do inevitably occur on wild, uninhabited land.
According to RandsInjuryLaw.com, a website for Roberts & Spiegel Injury Lawyers in San Luis Obispo, California, Yosemite National Park “has hosted an average of over four million visitors per year since 2013.” Noting that there is “no complete data set that tracks fatalities within the park,” it is estimated that “on average, there are 12 to 15 deaths per year in Yosemite.”
Netflix’s new limited series “Untamed,” however, focuses on just one.
Premiering Thursday, July 17, on the popular streamer, “Untamed” tells the story of a (fictional) young woman’s death in Yosemite National Park. Although deaths in the park are not entirely unheard of, the bulk of them are accidental (slips, falls, drownings) or natural (health-related causes), leading detectives to note the peculiarity of the show’s inciting incident. What follows is a trek deep into the woods of Yosemite in search of a killer who has a better grasp of the untamed land than nearly anyone else. Law enforcement’s only hope at solving the case lies with Kyle Turner (Eric Bana, “Munich,” 2005), an Investigative Services Branch (ISB) agent of the NPS.
Turner “is on the hunt for a killer,” says Netflix Tudum about the six-episode drama, “one who knows Yosemite National Park as well as he does; however, the dark secrets lurking in both [Turner] and the park’s past may be just as dangerous as the murderer.”
The leading ISB agent is not alone in his quest through the rough terrain, however. Turner is joined by budding Los Angeles-born park ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago, “La Brea”), who is “more accustomed to city life than to the wilds of Yosemite” (per Tudum). New to the wilderness herself and lacking experience in the field due to her youth, Vasquez is somewhat of an audience surrogate, charged with introducing viewers to the dangers and beauty of the California park.
“Everyone thinks of Yosemite as this beautiful place with all the vistas and all the scenery,” coshowrunner Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant,” 2015) said to Tudum, “but we were trying to
touch on the dangers that are just beyond that. I love stripping all the cheats away, stripping [away] all the more modern tools that people can use. It really gets down to the character and what they can find within themselves.”
One character in the series who has been very well acquainted with the park throughout his career is Paul Souter. Played by “Jurassic Park” (1993) and “The Twelve” star Sam Neill, Tudum reports that Souter has “been the chief park ranger in Yosemite for half his life,” noting that the aging professional has clearly found a rhythm in a job he enjoys. Further described as “a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend to Turner,” Souter cuts a sympathetic character in “Untamed.”
Rosemarie DeWitt (“Smile 2,” 2024) and Wilson Bethel (“Hart of Dixie”) also star as Jill Bodwin and Shane Maguire, respectively. While Bodwin’s presence as Turner’s ex-wife helps to provide some personal background to the lead’s otherwise cool and brooding character, Maguire, a former army ranger, supplies added force and protection where necessary, given his military background and penchant for seclusion.
“Untamed” is a collaboration between fatherand-daughter showrunners Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith, who have previously worked together on the screenplay for director Neil Burger’s 2023 thriller “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” based on the 2017 novel of the same name by American suspense author Karen Dionne. Series direction is provided by Neasa Hardiman (“Happy Valley”), Nick Murphy (“Save Me”) and Thomas Bezucha (“The Family Stone,” 2005), the latter having been an executive producer of the hit FX crime drama “Fargo.”
The Netflix series is a co-production with Warner Bros. Television, with whom executive producers John Wells (“The West Wing”) and Erin Jontow (“Animal Kingdom”) are affiliated under the John Wells Productions banner. Meanwhile, Todd Black (“It Ends with Us,” 2024) and new talent Tony Shaw produce for Escape Artists Entertainment, Steve Lee Jones (“You Don’t Know Jack,” 2020) produces for Bee Holder Productions and Cliff Roberts (“The Midnight Sky,” 2020) produces for Syndicate Entertainment.

Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer (“The Help,” 2011) embraces her Southern roots by hosting the down-home cooking competition “Family Recipe Showdown,” premiering Thursday, July 17, on Food Network.
Set in New Orleans — a city that Spencer adores, celebrated by the actress in the CNN travel series “My Happy Place” — this latest endeavor joins Spencer and Southern cooking expert Edgar “Dook” Chase as they welcome families to prepare their most cherished family recipes, offering the best-ofthe-best a life-changing $10,000 prize.
Each week, the duo ask
their competitors to take part in two rounds of competition, with the second and most important round following the cooks as they are asked to put their own spin on a favorite family recipe shared by one of the series’ visiting guest judges — all hailing from a list that includes some of Octavia’s celebrity friends, such as Reese Witherspoon (“Wild,” 2014), Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty,” 2012), Danielle Brooks (“Orange Is the New Black”), Tina Knowles (“Talks with Mama Tina”), Kandi Burruss (“The Chi”), Tim Gunn (“Project Runway”), Al Roker (“Today”) and more. Alongside their superstar guests, Spencer and Chase then dig into their dishes, determining who gets to take home the grand prize.
While every episode presents its own theme — from a Southern brunch with all the fixings to biscuit bake offs and more — “Family Recipe Showdown” begins with an episode focused on cocktails and comfort meals, and with the always-funny Eric Stonestreet (“Modern Family”) acting as the series’ inaugural guest.

Mount, “Hell on Wheels”) and his crew soon discover the culprits: the Gorn, one of Starfleet’s most formidable and feared enemies. Returning cast members include Ethan Peck (“The Midnight Sky,” 2020), Christina Chong (“Tom and Jerry,” 2021) and Melissa Navia (“Billions”). From series creator Akiva Goldsman (“Batman & Robin,” 1997), Season 3 of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is executive produced by Alex Kurtzman (“Star Trek,” 2009) and Davy Perez (“Supernatural”).

Whether they’re confronting the past or exploring new connections, one thing is certain: the drama is far from over. The series’ cast includes JaNa Craig, Aaron Evans, Miguel Harichi, Leah Kateb, Kaylor Martin, Connor Newsum, Serena Page, Kenny Rodriguez, Olivia Walker and Kendall Washington. “Love Island: Beyond the Villa” is executive produced by David George (“Queer Eye”), Adam Sher (“The Voice”), Jordana Hochman (“Beyond Scared Straight”), Sarah Howell (“Jersey Shore”) and Richard Bye (“Isolated,” 2013).

Q: I remember a movie where Meg Ryan played a movie producer. I loved it and really want to watch it again, but I can’t remember the name.
A: The film you’re looking for is called “The Deal” (2008), and it might not be an easy one to find.
It was, quite frankly, one of a series of flops she released in 2008 and 2009 — a run of romantic comedies that were supposed to be a return to form after a brief flirtation with dramatic roles, such as the 2004 boxing drama “Against the Ropes” and the steamy 2003 thriller “In the Cut.”
“The Deal” paired her with William H. Macy (“Fargo,” 1996), who was also playing to his strength as an unpolished schlub who’s daring you not to like him. They play dueling movie producers — she’s a high-flying exec at a major studio, he’s a down-on-his-luck independent who essentially tricks her into working with him. The result is a combination of Hollywood satire and love-hate romantic tension.
That sounds like a recipe for a hit, on par with Ryan’s romcom classics like “When Harry Met Sally” (1989) and “You’ve Got Mail” (1998), but it didn’t catch.
Firstly, it didn’t catch with distributors. Despite it touring all the big film festivals, it never got a theatrical release, instead going straight to video. And it didn’t really catch with critics, either. Variety magazine reviewer Peter Debruge wrote that “the characters seem to be doing all the laughing.”
It was, as I said, part of a run of romcom flops she released at the time. Later in the year, she starred in “My Mom’s New Boyfriend,” then in 2009 she did “Serious Moonlight.” Neither earned back their budgets at the box office.
Q: What ever happened to Hope Swinimer and “Hope in the Wild” on CBS? It was my favorite show.
A: “Hope in the Wild,” which is the U.S. title for Canadian wildlife show “Hope for Wildlife,” took a break when the pandemic hit, like a lot of other shows. It took a little longer to get back up and running (it is built around a charity, after all), but it finally came back earlier this year with new episodes. Unfortunately, not everyone can see them yet.
Currently, they’re just airing in Canada, on the Cottage Life TV channel, whereas they used to air (in a repackaged format) on the CBS network in the U.S. as well.
That’s a problem currently being worked on. “For those of you not in Canada, hang tight, we’ll try to have more information about where you can find it once the season gets going,” says a post on the show’s official Instagram page (@hopeforwildlife) in March.
With this new season, the show’s 11th, it also has a slightly new title: “Hope for Wildlife: The Next Generation.” Star and wildlife expert Hope Swinimer told CTV Atlantic that the name better reflects what the show is really about.
“Our work here is really all about getting people involved and getting people interested — from young to old. But the next generation coming up needs to be aware and get involved in this.”
For those who haven’t seen it, the show highlights the work of Swinimer and her team at the Hope for Wildlife center in Nova Scotia. They rescue and release wild animals in need, from raccoons to bobcats, pelicans and more.
