Do You HATE Going To The Dentist?

Are you embarrassed to smile? Is it time to schedule an appointment? According to Dr. Kim, “Excellent and complex dental care requires a significant investment of time. Patients who are sedated are not aware of how long they have been in the chair during an appointment, which enables them to remain relaxed and comfortable throughout longer procedures.”

There are countless reasons why people choose not to visit their dentist as often as they should, but the vast majority of them fall under a single category: fear.

Not only can patients benefit from sedation dentistry during an individual dental appointment, but it can also lead to a reduction in fear of the dentist.

To help people overcome their fear of the dentist, the team at Modern Dentistry in Sugar Grove are proponents of “sedation dentistry.”

“Positive dental experiences help to build a trusting relationship between an anxious patient and the entire dental team,” Kim explained. “It is not uncommon for anxious patients to require less expensive sedation or anxiety reducing procedures in the future, as they have gained confidence that dental therapy is not something that needs to be dreaded.”

Dr. Joseph Kim has performed thousands of sedation procedures. Most patients come to him by word of mouth. “We have many patients come from out of state for sedation and extensive dental treatment,” said Patient Care Coordinator Michelle Schultz.

He said that many patients find themselves finally able to return for their every-six-month exam and cleaning and are able to do so without the same level of fear and anxiety they originally had.

Dr. Kim said that the fear of dentists can sometimes cause anxiety so great that they lead to physical symptoms: panic attacks, sweating, nervousness, nausea. “Patients this fearful have a hard time even speaking on the phone with us to make an appointment,” Kim said.

“This promotes not only a healthy mouth, but also boosts the patient’s self-esteem and confidence,” Kim said. “It’s always amazing to see the transformation of patients who were embarrassed of their teeth. The emotional and financial investment that anxious patients make in their oral health is rewarded with a positive self-image in their healthy, new smile.”

This fear is often caused by either general phobia of the dentist, or it can be caused by a traumatic past experience or dental condition causing embarrassment or humiliation. Sadly, avoiding preventive and early treatment often turns smaller problems into serious diseases such as gum disease, painful and infected teeth, and further deterioration of their smiles.

For patients with great anxiety, Dr. Kim’s team often suggests IV sedation. For those who have a general fear of the dentist or just want to have a lot of treatment done at once, oral sedation is also available. Both have an amnesia component to them, so they have very little to no memory of the dental visit.

Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients facing this level of fear of dentists. However, there are things other people face that also can benefit from sedation dentistry. For some, their gag reflex is so severe that a patient requires sedation in order to have a treatment done. Other general reasons for sedation dentistry include people who need a lot of treatment to be done but do not want to return for multiple visits, and people who travel for work or cannot miss a lot of work due to dental treatments. In those cases, aided by sedation dentistry, more treatments could be done in fewer appointments.

“Sedation dentistry has helped many patients overcome their fears and allowed them to have the treatment they need,” Dr. Kim said. He encourages fearful patients to take advantage of a no-obligation, free sedation consultation.

In December of 2017, Brad Finley, Chicago Zone Manager, and Rob Dusek, Chicago District Manager, came to the store to personally present Bob with the award.

We have seen extraordinary changes in vehicle designs and capability, and our customer base has grown tremendously. We are now selling vehicles to the grandchildren of our original customers,” said Bob. “And I know we will continue to grow because we offer the best products at the best prices, and we absolutely have the best customer service in the entire industry.” Bob Jass Chevrolet has never been your typical dealership, and industry awards bear this out. Two significant awards recently given to the dealership are the Mark of Excellence award from General Motors, and the “2017 CarGurus Top Rated Dealer” award. Both honors point to the fact that Bob Jass Chevrolet focuses on customer satisfaction as well as a commitment to do things the right way.

Education, Experience will make Mayes a Strong Sheriff. A lot has changed since the last election, but the constant for Lt. Willie M. Mayes Sr. of the Sheriff’s office is his passion to serve all the citizens of Kane County with authentic leadership and responsible policing.

Mattress Warehouse

his year marks 17 years in business for the Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb, a locally owned family company. Visit this retail store in DeKalb at 1224 E. Lincoln Highway (across from the Moose Club and behind Star Worlds Arcade). The showrooms are open to the public six days a week; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. It is closed on Tuesdays.

“In 2000, we found an old 1920s brick warehouse that was kind of off the beaten path on DeKalb’s east side,” said owner Mike Kisluk. “We had the idea of establishing a store with very low overhead so that families could afford good-quality mattresses. We started with just five mattresses in a showroom so tiny you could hardly turn around. But the support from the community was so incredible that we expanded our showrooms.” Today, the Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb sells a wide range of mattresses, including memory foam beds, futons, bunk beds, headboards, daybeds, platform beds and loft beds are also available. You can find specialty items, such as waterbed supplies and custom-sized mattresses for antique beds, campers, RVs and truck sleepers. In stock are split-queen box springs. Unusual application bed frames and hardware are kept on-hand. Recently added is a specialty line of durable mattresses for the plus-size sleeper. All mattresses are made in the USA.

Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb recognizes that 21st Century demands often place time pressures on families. So, 75 to 80 percent of the mattress line-up is in-stock, ready to be loaded into a customer’s van or truck. Same day delivery is available on most merchandise. All the products are new and backed by a manufacturer’s warranty. Providing family-budget pricing means Mattress Warehouse is often the destination of choice for “big girl” and “big boy” beds. “One of the best things about working here is being around the little kids’ high energy and enthusiasm,” Kisluk said. He reassures parents that their children are always welcome. The Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb strives to offer a safe, relaxing, no-pressure atmosphere. “We aim to keep the store low-key,” he said. “We are ready to explain how the mattresses are constructed. Everyone is encouraged to lay down and try the beds. A comfort-based personal-preference approach to choosing a mattress is best.”

Armed with an impressive resume in law enforcement, an open-mindedness toward community concerns and the ability to think beyond the surface level of the task at hand, Lt. Willie Mayes is seeking the position of Kane County Sheriff in 2018.

Knows Sports!

riginally founded in 1984, Kirhofer’s Sports began as a retail destination and has grown these past 34 years into a primary provider of uniforms, apparel and equipment for teams, schools, leagues and organizations. What makes Kirhofer’s Sports unique is their dual retail-team sales combination at their west Aurora location. The idea behind this, and factoring in testimonials from both new and long-time customers, is the increase in accessibility people enjoy whenever they need to call with a question or stop in and peruse their team sales room, complete with manufacturer catalogs and samples to help ease the ordering process.

The same can be said of their retail associates, all of whom are young sports athletes and enthusiasts with knowledge of current products and trends. Together, everyone does their part to make sure all customers, no matter if you’re embroidering a jacket, fitting shoes for your basketball team or ordering 500 shirts for a school event, receive the attention only a small business like theirs can provide. “We’re always trying to build upon this longstanding reputation and look forward to many more years of being your neighborhood friend in the sporting goods world!”

Owner Doug Kirhofer and the sales department truly speak to the enjoyment of working in this industry. Once athletes and coaches themselves, Kirhofer’s salesmen recall the excitement of ordering new uniforms and apparel and share that enthusiasm when working with their clients.

Our Vision

The beauty and bounty of plants is essential to the mission of Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. The grounds are a vibrant canvas of native grasses and forbs, also known as wildflowers. Meanwhile, dozens of local greenthumb gardeners plant plots of tomatoes, beans and squash every summer for their own use as well as to share with the Northern Illinois Food Bank and other local charities.

At Hickory Knolls, the aquaponics system is home to several local aquatic species, such as minnows, crayfish and a map turtle. Situated above their tank, a triangular bed of clay-based gravel provides the growing medium for the greens and herbs favored by Hickory Knolls’ resident mascot, Peter Rabbit, as well as a guinea pig, turtles and other creatures residing throughout the Center. Water is circulated through the bed and pumped back into the fish tank through a charming country tin pail.

But growing crops inside the Discovery Center? Well, that’s something new. Thanks to an inspired collaboration between the St. Charles Park District and Flavors of North America (FONA) International of Geneva, a new aquaponics display honors both organizations’ shared mission of responsible ecological stewardship through an innovative use of materials and resources. The display was officially unveiled to the public during a ribbon cutting ceremony last fall. Aquaponics may be a new concept to most Discovery Center visitors but it’s an agricultural system that can be traced back to the Aztec civilization in the year 1000 AD. The Discovery Center will put this ancient technology to work cultivating vegetables and other greens that can then be used to feed many of the Center’s resident critters. Simply stated, aquaponics is a system for raising fish and other aquatic animals in conjunction with plants via a circulating system that provides benefits for both. Fish produce biological waste that breaks down into nitrates and ammonia. Too much of these byproducts can be harmful for aquatic life but they provide excellent fertilizer for plants. By pumping the tank water through a biofilter into a growing medium for plants, the nutrients can sustain simple vegetables such as lettuces and herbs. The water that is cleaned and filtered by vegetation is then cycled back

The aquaponics system and display itself is a prime example of good environmental stewardship. In addition to the plastic tote used as the aquatic tank, FONA also donated the pumping devices and wooden pallets that support the entire system. Visitors can view the aquaponics display by walking up the steps of a small deck area that recreates a residential porch, thus reinforcing how accessible aquaponics systems can be for the home user.

Physical therapy Advantage strives to be the connection from a self-limiting injury to a strong, active and informed lifestyle for all generations.

Ron Hain has served for almost twenty years in law enforcement and public safety leadership, implementing new and innovative programs to effectively address concerns to our community. Throughout his career, Ron has refocused investigative efforts from low income communities to instead target large-scale drug trafficking organizations, funneling bulk amounts of heroin and other illicit drugs onto the streets of Kane County. This change in focus resulted in the Kane County Sheriff’s Office seizing thousands of pounds of the narcotics responsible for 80 to 90 percent of our local crime. Meanwhile, Ron Hain has pioneered programs that have provided employment outreach to low income communities, and linked citizens with felony records to employers who were willing to hire them.

Ron Hain is a proven leader who has developed new strategies to effectively serve the community. he goal of the Fox Valley Auto Group, Fox Valley Volkswagen St. Charles, Fox Valley Volkswagen Schaumburg and Fox Valley Buick GMC St. Charles is to sell and service new Volkswagen, Buick and GMC vehicles and all makes and models of pre-driven vehicles.

Abinion began selling vehicles to help pay for college and fell in love with the business. His first dealership was Landmark Ford in Niles, IL for 16 years. Vice President, Pre-driven Vehicle

Their focus toward providing superior customer service and excellent ownership experience has allowed Fox Valley Auto Group to expand over the years.

Their mission is to move people. But this is not about selling their customers a vehicle and repairing the ones they already have. It is about much more than that and it is certainly much more than two simple words. They want everyone who is in contact with their team members every day to be MOVED. Moved in many ways, but always for the better — better than before their engagement with them — whether it is financially, spiritually, emotionally as well as professionally.

Emir Abinion, Founder, President & CEO, Fox Valley Auto Group

“We want to move people to a better place in their lives just by dealing and working with us,” said founder, President and CEO Emir Abinion. “Imagine the impact we can have on people’s lives with this as our focus. This is what it truly means to be of service.”

Director and Partner Shakeel Omar, operated a successful pre-driven automotive retail store in Chicago, IL for over 16 years. Long-time friends, Abinion and Omar met when they were selling cars together at Golf Mill Ford in the mid-1980s.

Abinion added a new Volkswagen dealership in West Chicago in 2006, which in 2016 moved and expanded to a 40,000 square-foot facility in St. Charles. Fox Valley Volkswagen Schaumburg opened in 2008 and recently underwent a significant remodel both inside and out to enhance the customer experience. Fox Valley Buick GMC of St. Charles opened in 2011.

In 2016, Frank Butnaru, who worked for Abinion in sales at Landmark Ford, was named as a second partner and is the General Manager of the Volkswagen dealership in Schaumburg. The two are long-time friends, as well.

In 2012, Volkswagen awarded Abinion the Volkswagen Diamond Pin Award, a recognition bestowed on only four dealers in North America and 70 Volkswagen dealers world-wide, for their overall commitment to the brand and its customers. They were again recognized in 2015 with membership in Volkswagen’s Customer First Club. This accolade recognizes the dealership as a top performer in customer satisfaction on a national level. The two things that drive Abinion are finding ways to make it better and more convenient for the dealerships’ customers to do business with them, and how can they serve the community better. Fox Valley Auto Group has three locations and approximately 160 employees. Together, Fox Valley Auto Group sells about 5,000 vehicles and services over 54,000 vehicles annually. Abinion said the secret to his dealerships’ success is to treat people like he would want to be treated and to be a value through service to his customers and community. “This comes first before any vehicle is sold or serviced,” he said.

IN THE MARCH 20 REPUBLICAN PRIMARY The only candidate with Sheriff’s Office, Fire Service and EMS experience Lifelong public servant Kevin Tindall wants to bring his decades of service to the role of Kane County Sheriff, and he is looking for the public’s support in order to do so. Tindall, a Republican, will appear on the ballot during the contested primary on March 20, 2018, with the primary’s winner set to appear in the November 2018 general election.

Tindall has more than 27 years in law enforcement in the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. He is the current Bomb Squad Commander, retiring as an assistant Chief and spending two years as an elected Sugar Grove Fire District Trustee. In addition to all of that, he remains an EMT-Paramedic, making this 31 years serving the public as part of the local Emergency Medical Services.

The task force was comprised of multiple departments of police and fire agencies, and he believes his ability to coordinate among multiple disciplines will help him succeed in the future, should he be elected as the new Kane County Sheriff. “The advanced knowledge, skills and abilities that I have had the honor to develop with my training and experience have prepared me to provide a higher level of service to the community,” Tindall said. “I have worked hard, and earned, the positions that I have attained. Any obstacle builds character; we just need to move with a purpose.” That purpose leads to what Tindall calls the “ABC services to the public”. A—Accountability to the public; B – Behavior acceptable for the position; C – Character and competence to provide thorough service with integrity. What those ABC’s spell out is a list of eight specific actions he would implement upon taking office.

Not only is he the only candidate with experience in multiple disciplines of public safety services, and at all levels including management, but he has served in numerous leadership roles over the years as well. He is the current Bomb Squad Commander, an Incident Management Instructor, and was a SWAT Team Leader, among many other leadership positions.

Tindall said that armed with a list of initiatives and a focus on the basics, he would hit the ground running with a focus on making an impact on a daily basis.

“Besides that, I am a proven leader as I am one of the original founders of the Kane County Fire Investigation Task Force,” Tindall said.

“Every day, I must earn the respect of the personnel, and the citizens, with the ABCs (Accountability, Behavior, Character and Competence),” he said. (415) 868-3538 Paid for by Friends of Tindall for Sheriff

Kevin Tindall’s 8-Point Plan

I would streamline processes to create efficiency in the office. I would develop a continuous improvement team concept to engage the personnel into helping find cost effective solutions. Develop a community risk reduction plan by building community partners to address and educate on active shooter incidents and pre-plan for security concerns in schools, churches and businesses. Support our schools and the school resource officers to foster the rapport that is developed with the faculty, students and community. Bring back the Peer Jury Program for the schools. Return Crime Scene Technicians to process crime scenes and develop new personnel to be ready. Develop an Auxiliary Deputy program to assist with incidents/traffic direction according to applicable laws. Work with the corrections officers and the County Board to re-visit the Federal Inmate Program, and if good for the county, re-implement the program.

Genoa Pizza in Sugar Grove — 20 years of great Italian food

Genoa Pizza owner Giuseppe Pizzo was born in Detroit, Mich., and he grew up in Italy. He opened his restaurant in Sugar Grove 20 years ago, but the real history dates back to 1975, when his grandfather opened his Genoa Pizza in Genoa, Ill. “It all starts with good quality product,” Pizzo said. “We have a good, quality pizza sauce and pizza dough that was handed down from my Uncle Pete.” Pizzo said he started out his work life as a finishing carpenter. When he found himself in hard times, he said his brothers gave him an opportunity, and “here I am, 20 years later.” When Pizzo began the business 20 years ago, he said he had to work hard to compete with an already-existing pizza place in town. Little by little, he was able to gain customers, and to keep them coming back for more. He and his employees continue to work hard to keep

his customers happy.

In addition to the quality of the food, he credits the success of the business to “the heart and the dedication that goes into it every day.” From thin to pan to stuffed pizza crusts, Genoa Pizza also offers a wide variety of meat and fresh vegetable toppings, and a selection of specialty pizzas, including Hawaiian Pizza, Mediterranean, BLT, Healthy Choice and Taco Pizza, among others. Genoa also serves appetizers; a variety of salads, pasta and other Italian dinners, including homemade baked lasagna, chicken alfredo fettuccini and chicken and veal parmesan; sandwiches, and a number of specials, including pizza by the slice until 2 p.m. and half-price pizza on Wednesday night. The restaurant provides delivery and carry-out. In the future, Pizzo would like to expand into a larger space and possibly add a sit-down area. “It’s a true Italian Experience to satisfy the most discerning appetites!” 44 Cross St., Sugar Grove (630) 466-0781

In May of 2011, Dan Borowiak of Sugar Grove was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After a 10-week journey that included a stay at Mayo Clinic and took him to Loma Linda, Calif., doctors found proton therapy was Dan’s best option to beat this deadly disease. While Dan was away, he found out that the dedication he had for his insurance business was ingrained throughout his employees, who not only ran his Sugar Grove-based

business in his absence, they handled everything without a hiccup. “I not only had my family for support, but my insurance family (staff, clients and companies) behind me through prayer,” Dan said. Dan has been in the insurance business for 30 years, having started out with American Family for his first seven years. Deciding he needed to offer more than one option for his customers, since everyone does not have all the same needs, Dan began representing quality companies like Pekin, AAA, West Bend, Travelers, Progressive, Frankenmuth and Hartford as an independent agent. “Over the years of being in the insurance business, I have come to appreciate how the insurance profession has been able to help

String it up at Austin’s Violin Shop

ustin’s Violin Shop makes, repairs, sells and rents the four orchestral stringed instruments— violin, viola, cello, and bass—and offers a wide range of music, stands and accessories. Their courier service travels throughout the Chicagoland area.

Owner Patricia Austin began playing the violin in fourth grade and continued to study music at Northern Illinois University. There, she also studied violin-making with Mr. Harold Walker

in DeKalb. Patricia began teaching Suzuki violin to students in 1975. In 1981, she and her husband, Dana, opened Austin’s Violin Shop in a ramshackle house on Wheeler Road—very humble beginnings! In 1986, the Austins moved their shop to its current location on Wheeler Road. Their business continued to grow, along with their family of eight children. The location presents easy access to several area studios and schools. Working out of their home also gave Patricia the opportunity to be close to her children while teaching full time. Dana converted the garage into a working shop for meeting with customers, as well as for luthier services. Upon Dana’s passing in 1994, Patricia took over the violin shop and gradually transitioned from full-time teaching to running the shop. The Austin’s oldest daughter, Honna, currently provides lessons in the studio two days a week, as well as at a large strings studio in Batavia. Daughter Holly graduated from the violin-making school and is now a luthier at the shop, and son Joel aspires to become a luthier.

“Our main philosophy is to allow students from our area the opportunity to enjoy playing a stringed instrument, and to provide them with high-quality equipment and service,” Patricia said. She said that she never foresaw the size that they have grown to, or the number of wonderful families and teachers they have met over the years. “I’ve been able to incorporate many loves into this place—music, children, gardens, pets,” she said. “We have so much to be thankful for.” If you have a question or need about anything concerning orchestra strings, the Austins have the answer and the products, or they will find it for you.

Critter Sitters Loving care for your pet, and so much more Sandy Hafenbrack started Critter Sitters almost 30 years ago after rescuing a kitten at her back door. Since then she has built her firm into the professional pet sitting service you can count on. To Sandy, this is not just her work, it’s her passion. Whether dog, cat, rabbit, bird, fish or backyard chicken, Critter Sitters will treat your pets as their own. Not only will they walk and feed them, clean the litter box, give shots and pills and call you when pets are sick, but they will also take in mail, water plants and be sure the house is secure and neat. They’ve even been known to deal with a burst water pipe and a fire. They take pains to communicate well with owners the way the owners want. For re-assurance, Sandy texts, and posts photos of pets on Facebook. She understands the fear of a stranger in your home. Trust has to be earned. Thousands of customers over the years are her best references. See reviews on the website and Facebook. Critter Sitters serves North Aurora, Aurora, Montgomery, Yorkville, Sugar Grove, Elburn, Kaneville and Maple Park. Sandy would like to expand into other areas, but needs more sitters. Our cat Barney was diagnosed with diabetes so we needed to find someone to take care of him while we travel. I did my research and came across Critter Sitters. We went on a quick getaway feeling a wee bit nervous, but Sandy’s daily pictures of Barney and his glucose score eased our minds. We came home to a daily journal of Barney. We now have a person we trust to take great care of our boy. If we could give her a 10-star rating we would!

- Vonda Phillips, Sugar Grove

Here’s a glimpse of a day in the life. Riley, the retriever mix didn’t know what to make of Sandy when the pet sitter first entered the house to take her for a walk. She sat in the corner of the laundry room and just watched and listened as Sandy talked to her and offered her treats as a way of earning her trust. The patience and coaxing must have worked, because 20 minutes later Riley was giving Sandy kisses as they prepared for their walk. “Pet sitting gives so much satisfaction. You rub dogs’ bellies, get kisses and hear kittens purr. What you get in return is 10 times greater than what you give,” she said. Sandy hires carefully. All sitters are background-checked. To join the team, contact her today. “If I wouldn’t have them in my home, I won’t send them in a client’s home,” she said. “So if you want your pet to be lovingly cared for, we’re the company you should call,” Sandy said.

Looking for a fun job where you get exercise, rub dogs’ bellies and are appreciated?

Now hiring pet sitters! Due to our growth we need to add more pet sitters. You must have a deep love for animals, be dedicated, observant, detailoriented and communicate well. Will train. Call Sandy (630) 844-9554.

Essential Bed SHOWROOM

D e f i n i t e l y N OT j u s t a n o t h e r m a t t r e s s s t o r e “Sleep may be the most important factor determining the quality of our health. It’s that important. And there needs to be a source that makes the highest quality sleep products accessible to the broadest number of people.” That statement from Randy Gonigam, owner of Essential Bed, sums up what drives this company to play David to the mattress store Goliaths that are seemingly on every corner of every shopping area around.

answers they haven’t found elsewhere. We are proud to have been a part of many thrilling stories of helping people find comfort, pain relief, and better sleep when they thought those things were impossible,” he said.

“At Essential Bed, we live by two mantras: ‘Sell for Less and Tell the Truth’ and ‘We have a bed for that!’” Everything about what we do, from sourcing and design of our beds, to our unorthodox channels of distribution, to the stripping of all unnecessary costs from our business model in order to keep prices low, is designed to recognize, understand, and solve the serious problems and threats our customers face to their physical, mental, and emotional health. All three are intricately tied to the quality of sleep we get. “The chain stores and big corporate players, both on the selling side and the manufacturing side, have no concept of how personal and individual each person’s sleep is to them. And it’s hard to bring attention to a different, infinitely better way to address the unique challenges we all face, and provide solutions, simply because the sheer weight of their marketing and store penetration is so massive,” Gonigam said. Essential Bed purposely moves in a very different direction than other mattress providers. For several years, Essential Beds were only offered through a small network of Chiropractic physicians in Northern Illinois. “We were purposeful in working with this healing group. Chiropractic patients are typically people that have often debilitating pain issues, and they turn to Chiropractic for

Another channel that Essential Bed is beginning to work closely with is Fitness. “If you are pursuing fitness and/or weight loss goals, and not getting adequate quality sleep, you will almost certainly fall short of your goals. Go to for much more on these topics.”

In 2017, Essential Bed found another niche that fits them well, when they began doing Fundraiser Mattress Sales for community service providers and schools. These events present a low overhead opportunity to meet customers in a relaxed atmosphere, and really address their needs with quality products at lower than market prices. Everyone benefits when these profits go to support the organization hosting the event.

“The concept works because no one is ever asked or pressured to buy something they don’t want or need. Statistically, about one in 6 or 7 households will purchase a new bed or pillows in the near future. We simply direct those purchasers to our events. No one has to sell anything, or pressure their neighbors or coworkers, and there is very little overall effort required of the benefiting organization. It’s a win-win for all,” Gonigam said.
