There are countless reasons why people choose not to visit their dentist as often as they should, but the vast majority of them fall under a single category: fear.
Not only can patients benefit from sedation dentistry during an individual dental appointment, but it can also lead to a reduction in fear of the dentist.
To help people overcome their fear of the dentist, the team at Modern Dentistry in Sugar Grove are proponents of “sedation dentistry.”
“Positive dental experiences help to build a trusting relationship between an anxious patient and the entire dental team,” Kim explained. “It is not uncommon for anxious patients to require less expensive sedation or anxiety reducing procedures in the future, as they have gained confidence that dental therapy is not something that needs to be dreaded.”
Dr. Joseph Kim has performed thousands of sedation procedures. Most patients come to him by word of mouth. “We have many patients come from out of state for sedation and extensive dental treatment,” said Patient Care Coordinator Michelle Schultz.
He said that many patients find themselves finally able to return for their every-six-month exam and cleaning and are able to do so without the same level of fear and anxiety they originally had.
Dr. Kim said that the fear of dentists can sometimes cause anxiety so great that they lead to physical symptoms: panic attacks, sweating, nervousness, nausea. “Patients this fearful have a hard time even speaking on the phone with us to make an appointment,” Kim said.
“This promotes not only a healthy mouth, but also boosts the patient’s self-esteem and confidence,” Kim said. “It’s always amazing to see the transformation of patients who were embarrassed of their teeth. The emotional and financial investment that anxious patients make in their oral health is rewarded with a positive self-image in their healthy, new smile.”
This fear is often caused by either general phobia of the dentist, or it can be caused by a traumatic past experience or dental condition causing embarrassment or humiliation. Sadly, avoiding preventive and early treatment often turns smaller problems into serious diseases such as gum disease, painful and infected teeth, and further deterioration of their smiles.
For patients with great anxiety, Dr. Kim’s team often suggests IV sedation. For those who have a general fear of the dentist or just want to have a lot of treatment done at once, oral sedation is also available. Both have an amnesia component to them, so they have very little to no memory of the dental visit.
Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients facing this level of fear of dentists. However, there are things other people face that also can benefit from sedation dentistry. For some, their gag reflex is so severe that a patient requires sedation in order to have a treatment done. Other general reasons for sedation dentistry include people who need a lot of treatment to be done but do not want to return for multiple visits, and people who travel for work or cannot miss a lot of work due to dental treatments. In those cases, aided by sedation dentistry, more treatments could be done in fewer appointments.
“Sedation dentistry has helped many patients overcome their fears and allowed them to have the treatment they need,” Dr. Kim said. He encourages fearful patients to take advantage of a no-obligation, free sedation consultation.

The beauty and bounty of plants is essential to the mission of Hickory Knolls Discovery Center. The grounds are a vibrant canvas of native grasses and forbs, also known as wildﬂowers. Meanwhile, dozens of local greenthumb gardeners plant plots of tomatoes, beans and squash every summer for their own use as well as to share with the Northern Illinois Food Bank and other local charities.
At Hickory Knolls, the aquaponics system is home to several local aquatic species, such as minnows, crayﬁsh and a map turtle. Situated above their tank, a triangular bed of clay-based gravel provides the growing medium for the greens and herbs favored by Hickory Knolls’ resident mascot, Peter Rabbit, as well as a guinea pig, turtles and other creatures residing throughout the Center. Water is circulated through the bed and pumped back into the ﬁsh tank through a charming country tin pail.
But growing crops inside the Discovery Center? Well, that’s something new. Thanks to an inspired collaboration between the St. Charles Park District and Flavors of North America (FONA) International of Geneva, a new aquaponics display honors both organizations’ shared mission of responsible ecological stewardship through an innovative use of materials and resources. The display was ofﬁcially unveiled to the public during a ribbon cutting ceremony last fall. Aquaponics may be a new concept to most Discovery Center visitors but it’s an agricultural system that can be traced back to the Aztec civilization in the year 1000 AD. The Discovery Center will put this ancient technology to work cultivating vegetables and other greens that can then be used to feed many of the Center’s resident critters. Simply stated, aquaponics is a system for raising ﬁsh and other aquatic animals in conjunction with plants via a circulating system that provides beneﬁts for both. Fish produce biological waste that breaks down into nitrates and ammonia. Too much of these byproducts can be harmful for aquatic life but they provide excellent fertilizer for plants. By pumping the tank water through a bioﬁlter into a growing medium for plants, the nutrients can sustain simple vegetables such as lettuces and herbs. The water that is cleaned and ﬁltered by vegetation is then cycled back
The aquaponics system and display itself is a prime example of good environmental stewardship. In addition to the plastic tote used as the aquatic tank, FONA also donated the pumping devices and wooden pallets that support the entire system. Visitors can view the aquaponics display by walking up the steps of a small deck area that recreates a residential porch, thus reinforcing how accessible aquaponics systems can be for the home user.

IN THE MARCH 20 REPUBLICAN PRIMARY The only candidate with Sheriff’s Ofﬁce, Fire Service and EMS experience Lifelong public servant Kevin Tindall wants to bring his decades of service to the role of Kane County Sheriff, and he is looking for the public’s support in order to do so. Tindall, a Republican, will appear on the ballot during the contested primary on March 20, 2018, with the primary’s winner set to appear in the November 2018 general election.
Tindall has more than 27 years in law enforcement in the Kane County Sheriff’s Ofﬁce. He is the current Bomb Squad Commander, retiring as an assistant Chief and spending two years as an elected Sugar Grove Fire District Trustee. In addition to all of that, he remains an EMT-Paramedic, making this 31 years serving the public as part of the local Emergency Medical Services.
The task force was comprised of multiple departments of police and ﬁre agencies, and he believes his ability to coordinate among multiple disciplines will help him succeed in the future, should he be elected as the new Kane County Sheriff. “The advanced knowledge, skills and abilities that I have had the honor to develop with my training and experience have prepared me to provide a higher level of service to the community,” Tindall said. “I have worked hard, and earned, the positions that I have attained. Any obstacle builds character; we just need to move with a purpose.” That purpose leads to what Tindall calls the “ABC services to the public”. A—Accountability to the public; B – Behavior acceptable for the position; C – Character and competence to provide thorough service with integrity. What those ABC’s spell out is a list of eight speciﬁc actions he would implement upon taking ofﬁce.
Not only is he the only candidate with experience in multiple disciplines of public safety services, and at all levels including management, but he has served in numerous leadership roles over the years as well. He is the current Bomb Squad Commander, an Incident Management Instructor, and was a SWAT Team Leader, among many other leadership positions.
Tindall said that armed with a list of initiatives and a focus on the basics, he would hit the ground running with a focus on making an impact on a daily basis.
“Besides that, I am a proven leader as I am one of the original founders of the Kane County Fire Investigation Task Force,” Tindall said.
“Every day, I must earn the respect of the personnel, and the citizens, with the ABCs (Accountability, Behavior, Character and Competence),” he said.

Genoa Pizza owner Giuseppe Pizzo was born in Detroit, Mich., and he grew up in Italy. He opened his restaurant in Sugar Grove 20 years ago, but the real history dates back to 1975, when his grandfather opened his Genoa Pizza in Genoa, Ill. “It all starts with good quality product,” Pizzo said. “We have a good, quality pizza sauce and pizza dough that was handed down from my Uncle Pete.” Pizzo said he started out his work life as a ﬁnishing carpenter.
