Illinois Steel Company Offices - Joliet Joliet is known as the “City of Steel” because the town was a major steel-producing center for many years.

During the last part of the 19th century, the Chicago area became one of the leading centers of iron and steel production.

The growth of this industry was a combination of entrepreneurial spirit, local raw materials, and geographical advantages linked to the waterways.

In 1869, the Union Coal, Iron & Transportation Company developed an iron works on Collins Street. By 1873, the company had reorganized as the Joliet Iron & Steel Company, and its 90-acre site included two blast furnaces, two five-ton Bessemer converters, an iron rail-making mill, and a steel rail mill.

By the end of the 1880s, local and national mills started expanding and consolidating efforts.

One of the first great mergers occurred in 1889 when most of the area mills combined to form a new entity, the Illinois Steel Company, and eventually the company was bought by the United States Steel Corporation.

Between 1869 and 1930, the Joliet Iron and Steel Works employed thousands of Joliet-area residents, most of them immigrants from Poland, Sweden and Slovenia, who worked and produced iron and steel products, including rails for the nation’s growing railroad system.

By the 1930s, the operations became unprofitable and the plant’s six major blast furnaces were demolished, leaving only foundations.

New owner says downtown Joliet club has proved it can draw a crowd

What was Mojoes and then The Tree now is becoming The Forge.

New owner Frank Mastalerz is confident the downtown Joliet location will draw crowds if it’s run right. He’s seen it happen.

“I know it can work. We have a proven history of it working,” Mastalerz said last week in the middle of a remodeling at The Forge, as he and partners in the venture were preparing the club for an April 7 opening night.

Mojoes frequently attracted hundreds of people for the heavy metal bands that played there – so many people that the club ran into problems with city authorities for exceeding its capacity of 950. New owners took over in July 2015 and changed the name to The Tree, which closed in December.

Mastalerz is familiar with the history, having booked most of the shows that played at Mojoes and The Tree over the past several years.

He also said he has a pretty good handle on what he thinks didn’t work, having experience running his own club – The Pearl Room in Mokena – and organizing events when he worked as events coordinator at Toyota Park in Bridgeview.

Mastalerz owns FM Entertainment, which provides talent, production and marketing services to music venues.

“I know how to run a building,” he said. “It’s not that complicated.

Honestly, over 25 years I’ve done over 4,000 shows.”

Club remodeling

The new owners are making some changes.

For one, the stairs that used to run right alongside the stage leading to the second level of the club have been moved to the other end of the room.

Mastalerz said they were a distraction.

“People that come for a show, they want an experience seeing their favorite band,” he said. “Watching people walk up a flight of stairs while your favorite band is on the stage, that’s a buzzkill.”

“The biggest complaint we always had was they had production constraints because of the stage size,” he said.

The new owners also are putting to use a kitchen to open a restaurant for lunches during the week and to provide food to concertgoers during performances.

It all sounded good to Jack Loftis of Crest Hill, who was looking into the window at The Forge last week, trying to get a better idea of what’s coming.

“I’m glad to know it’s going to go back to a venue we can be happy with,” said Loftis, a self-described metal head who called Mojoes “wonderful.”

“It was a great atmosphere,” Loftis said. “They always had the right bands for the right crowds.”

When the club became “The Tree,” Loftis said, “It was not like it used to be.”

“The biggest complaint we always had was they had production constraints because of the stage size.”

new owner of The Forge Knowing that Mastalerz ran The Pearl Room convinced Loftis that the Joliet club is on the right track.

“The Pearl Room was awesome,” he said. “That’s the kind of venue that brought in the music.”

Bringing in shows

Mastalerz said he will bring in all genres of music for different age groups.

When he appeared before the Joliet City Council for his liquor license earlier this month, Mastalerz said he expects to stage between 60 to 80 shows

this year.

He also promised he would be able to control the crowds, which occasionally became unruly at Mojoes, contributing to its demise.

Mastalerz got his start 25 years ago, managing a band out of the Lockport area called Elbow. After a while, he got involved with Dreams, a club in downtown Lockport, booking shows for the owner.

Today, his business, FM Entertainment, books talent for venues in 17 cities from Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Sturgis, South Dakota, Mastalerz said. When he was lining up shows for Mojoes and The Tree, Mastalerz said, agents wanted to bring their bands to the venue.

“The entire time I was here,” he said, “I knew that it can draw.”

The April 7 opening is a free show featuring the band Hi Infidelity. Adelitas Way is scheduled for April 13, and Kashmir, a Led Zeppelin tribute band is coming April 14.

‘He lived a complete life’ Andrew Betts lived for God and shared his construction talents at home and church

JOLIET – “He lived a complete life.”

That’s what Annie Mae Betts of Joliet said about her husband, Andrew Betts. Andrew’s life was all about Jesus, Annie Mae said, which she believes is about as complete as one can get.

“And he loved his church,” Annie Mae added.

That was Mount Zion Baptist Church in Joliet, which Andrew helped build. Bonnie Winfrey of Joliet said she met Andrew when she used to attend Mount Zion and she called him “a quiet spirit.”

“He never boasted about the things he did. He was just an awesome man of God,” Bonnie said. “He built a legacy of love and a spirit of ‘I can.’ People can look at his life and pattern it after him and know they can go after the things they feel is impossible.”

One of those impossible things Andrew did was helping build Mount Zion after the general contractor had a heart attack, Annie Mae said.

Up until that point, Andrew’s construction experience was limited to the additions he’d built to their family home on Pico Street in Joliet – additions that were needed over time because he and Annie Mae had nine children.

Andrew would always pray before undertaking any task, Annie Mae said.

And he prayed to God about building

Mount Zion.

“He had to trust God,” Annie Mae said. “And God made a way for it.”

Annie Mae was 17 when she met Andrew. She lived in Mississippi, and Andrew came to Mississippi to visit friends. Annie Mae said Andrew had every quality she wanted in a man, especially kindness and love of God and church.

“We went to church together,” Annie Mae said.

Right from the start, Andrew’s singing voice impressed her. Annie Mae said Andrew sang in church choirs, sang in quartets and sang solos. He had two signature songs, one for her and one for God. To Annie Mae, Andrew sang Nat King Cole. “I love you for sentimental reasons; I hope you do believe me; I’ll give you my heart.”

To God, Andrew sang the spiritual, “When the gates swing open, I will walk in.”

“He always called me, ‘Baby,’ ” Annie Mae said, “unless he was mad at me. Then he called me ‘Shorty.’ But mostly he called me, ‘Baby.’ ” They married and moved to Joliet, where Andrew did whatever was needed to provide for his family. For a time, that meant working two jobs: the day shift at Caterpillar and the afternoon shift at Joliet Arsenal, Annie Mae said.

Many days, Andrew had only enough time between shifts to run home and grab a second lunch, Annie Mae said. Despite the long hours,

Andrew was an involved father, and Annie Mae said she could not have asked for anyone better.

“He was a disciplined father,” Annie Mae said. “He saw to it that the kids went to church and that they went to school. He taught them the right way, and he never had to get any of them out of jail, which was a good thing. They weren’t perfect, but they were pretty good children.”

When Caterpillar laid off Andrew, he worked construction for a time and then went to Electric Motor Service in LaGrange, where Andrew worked for 25 years before he retired, Annie Mae said.

Yet Andrew still found time to serve as a deacon and trustee at Mount Zion, Annie Mae said. Both roles received the same diligent attention he gave the others.

“There was nothing he wouldn’t do for Mount Zion to save them a dollar,” Annie Mae said. “If a door needed hanging, he’d hang it so he would not have to hire anyone to do it. He did it with his own hands.”

For recreation, Andrew liked bowling and watching Bulls games. Although Andrew attended a few games over the years, he mostly watched them at home because Andrew was a homebody, Annie Mae said.

“We were just country people from the south who came to the north to make this our home,” Annie Mae said.

After Andrew retired, he and Annie Mae moved to Mississippi. There, An-

drew built a home for the two of them on the farm where Annie Mae grew up. Amenities included four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a gazebo.

“It was just a big, nice home on the farm,” Annie Mae said.

But they didn’t stay forever. Annie Mae had a stroke, and Andrew was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

They returned to Joliet to be near their children. Andrew was 88 when he died Dec. 10.

Toward the end of his life, Andrew lived at Salem Village Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Joliet. But he continued to call Annie Mae “Baby,” and he continued to sing his two signature songs to her.

“There was never a time he didn’t know who I was,” Annie Mae said. “He always knew.”

Candidates: Trustees must address traffic, development

bstanley@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Four candidates are vying for three seats on the Channahon Village Board.

Trustees Sam Greco and Mark Scaggs are seeking re-election. Chantal Host hopes to retain the seat she was appointed to two years ago and Steve

Czyz is challenging the incumbents.

All of the candidates agreed traffic management and retail development will be significant issues for the next board.

“We’ve had the goal of four lanes on Route 6 at Interstate 55,” Scaggs said.

“We need to work with the federal and state [governments] for more lanes on the interstates themselves. We have 1960s roads, and we’re living in 2017.”

Scaggs also feels retail development will follow housing growth, but the board’s most important duty is to be a “strong steward” of tax dollars. He has voted against an increase in real estate taxes.

“I think the village spends wisely, but there are some nonessential services I didn’t think we needed,” he said.

Greco said he also supports keeping property taxes down and maintaining a balanced budget, including a wage freeze for elected officials. He feels setting up a tax

Restored car taking first place meant something VIEWS Kris Stadalsky When Dan Clennon had his father’s 1987 El Camino restored recently, it was a dream come true.

When the car took first place at the World of Wheels in Chicago, it was a dream come true for Jason Zolper, of Zolper Auto Restoration, who restored the vehicle. This was the second year in a row Zolper won at World of Wheels.

Now, the only one left to impress would be Dan’s father, Jerry “Bud” Clennon, but he passed away three years ago this coming May. Although Bud Clennon loved his El Camino the way it was, pre-restoration, Dan is sure he would have loved the new look.

“He probably would have gone nuts,” Dan said.

Two years ago Dan decided to have the beloved car restored in his dad’s memory. The El Camino, which wasn’t in bad shape when Bud bought it 15 years ago, underwent a complete restoration at Zolper’s shop.

Because he enjoyed the project and values each piece he works on, Zolper added a beautiful hardwood floor in the bed of the truck as a surprise gift to Dan and his wife, Robyn Clennon.

it looked like nothing was going on and all he did was write checks, said Dan. But it’s not like the TV shows, where they restore a car in a week and show it in an hour-long show, said Jason.

The interior alone took three months. They opted for a sports model nose, which had to be cut and refiberglassed to fit.

car, because she sometimes felt the car was going to kill her.

When Bud Clennon first bought his El Camino, he was in seventh heaven.

He told his son that some day it would be the flower car in his funeral.

“It was,” said Dan. “I drove it in his funeral.”

Bud was well known in Minooka and Channahon. He was born in a farmhouse on U.S. Route 6 in Minooka.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, a farmer and an insurance salesman.

He sold insurance out of the farmhouse until he bought a building in downtown Minooka for the Clennon Insurance Agency in 1962, which is now run by his daughters.

Dan would take the El Camino to car shows for his dad when Bud’s health wasn’t so good, which made for a lot of great memories.

Getting it restored in his honor is just icing on the cake for Dan. And this May, on the third anniversary of his father’s death, he intends to drive the El Camino to Bud’s grave to show it off and then everyone will toast Bud Clennon with a beer.

Host said the village has succeeded by following a comprehensive plan that was implemented about a decade ago and updated a few years later.

“We have the resources to review that plan, and we have to consider [another] update,” Host said.

Czyz said he is concerned with the board’s direction after a warehouse development and second truck stop were unanimously approved and a larger warehouse complex has been proposed.

“I am in support of manufacturing but opposed to warehousing [and] distribution buildings,” Czyz said. “All of these developments are at ... the main artery in and out of the village.”

Czyz believes the approval of warehouse developments are “throwing all [the] eggs in one basket.”

“The village is trying to capitalize on the property tax revenue these developments will bring in, but at what cost to future residential and retail development?” he said. “This type of development could create potential revenue losses within the village.”

OBITUARIES C. DANIEL ALBERT C. Daniel Albert, age 65, passed suddenly on Thursday, March 23rd, 2017 at his home after a tragic accident.

Survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Nancy (nee Dodd); three sons, Eric (Rachael), Nate (Jillian), Tony (Melissa); and seven beautiful grandchildren, Daniel (8), Isabella (8), Lucy (2), Brielle (4), Dean (2), Amee (6), and Mia (2). Also survived by his motherin-law, Bobbie (late Loy) Dodd; sisters-in-law, Shirley (Doug) Jackson and Robin (Brad) Smith; brother-in-law, Tom Dodd; nephews, Brian (Jamie) Jackson and Matt (Michelle) Jackson; nieces, Brittany and Brandi Smith, Aleshia Reyes, and Jordan Dodd; Aunt Pat (late Ed) Albert; and numerous cousins and great nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, John and Rosemary Albert; father-in-law, Loy Dodd; brother-in-law, Larry Dodd; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Dan was an active parishioner at his childhood church, St. Anne Catholic Church in Crest Hill. Dan was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a Eucharistic minister, past volunteer on the 50th anniversary and parish picnic committees, and a Lector back in his high school days. Dan was a 15-year member of the Crest Hill Lions Club where he served as

past president, board member, past candy day chairman and recipient of the Crest Hill Lion of the Year Award. Dan would volunteer for any job or position whenever asked.

Above all, Dan loved his family and especially his grandchildren. Papa treasured the moments when the entire family got together, whether it was a day at his pool, a day at the Coal City Area Club, or Seafood Extravaganza on New Year’s Day. He would also always drop everything to help one of his sons on a household project. His hobbies included journaling and fishing.

Funeral services for Dan Albert will be held on Wednesday, March 29th, 2017, at 9:15 a.m. from the Fred C. She later went on to work as a bookkeeper for U.S. Steel, where she met her beloved husband Robert. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Mary Nativity Catholic Church in Joliet. Lorraine was the secretary for St. Mary Nativity Grade School for 35 plus years. Lorraine was an extremely devoted mother, grandmother, matriarch and mentor.

She enjoyed spending time going to all of her grandchildren’s sporting events and perfor-

mances. She dedicated her life to her family and her religion.

The family they would like to thank the staff, sisters and residents at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home as well as Joliet Area Community Hospice for their great care.

Lorraine will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Illinois mulls legalizing marijuana for fiscal boost

SPRINGFIELD – Marijuana advocates are trying to lay the groundwork for Illinois to become the first state in the Midwest and the ninth nationwide to legalize recreational pot, arguing that the move will help solve the state’s notorious budget crisis.

Two Illinois state lawmakers introduced legislation last week that would allow residents 21 and older to possess, grow or buy up to an ounce (28 grams) of marijuana and license businesses to sell marijuana products subject to regulation. They said it would help fill Illinois’ multibillion-dollar budget hole with $350 million to $700 million in new tax revenue.

A national advocacy group, the Marijuana Policy Project, based the estimate on the proposal’s $50-perounce wholesale tax, Illinois’ standard sales tax, federal marijuana consumption data and recreational pot prices in Colorado. The proposal earmarks 50 percent of wholesale revenues for the state’s general fund and divides the remaining half 30/20 between education and public health.

Every state to legalize pot to date has done so by voter ballot initiative, said Chris Lindsey, a legislative analyst with the project. But Illinois advocates are not alone in holding out hope for lawmaker approval. Seventeen other states – including Missouri – also are considering legislative action.

Rep. Kelly Cassidy, a Chicago Democrat who co-sponsored 2014 legislation that legalized medical marijuana in Illinois, is sponsoring the proposal in the House. She said states that legalized marijuana have seen an economic boost from increased tax revenue, new jobs and bolstered tourism.

“We’re talking about all sorts of ways of raising revenue,” Cassidy said, referring to state lawmakers’ efforts to break a two-year budget logjam. “We might as well be talking about this, too.”

But she and fellow Chicago Democrat Sen. Heather Steans, who sponsored legislation that succeeded in decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of pot last year, know their new pitch could be a tough sell.

They plan to jumpstart conversations with lawmakers, interest groups and the public this spring but won’t move legislation forward in the current session.

Ed Wojcicki, the association’s director, called legalizing recreational pot “an enforcement nightmare.” He said existing science remains inconclusive about how to best identify impairment on the road and in other compromising situations.

Democratic Rep. Lou Lang of Skokie, lead sponsor of the medical marijuana proposal, suggested the staggered timeline could help lawmakers gain a more complete picture of potential benefits and consequences – especially as more data rolls in on Illinois’ pilot medical marijuana program, which launched in late 2015.

“I do think this might be in Illinois’ future,” Lang said. “I certainly support the idea of having a discussion.”

Illinois legalization advocates such as Dan Linn, who directs the state chapter of a nonprofit lobbying group called NORML, have long been working toward this conversation.

Linn said states where pot is legal have recorded no uptick in traffic fatalities. Instead of threatening public safety, he contended, regulating the already widely consumed substance will take the business out of the hands of criminals and impose important regulations like quality and age controls.

“There’s not a drug dealer in this country that asks for an ID when someone’s looking to buy drugs,” he said.

The proposal is launching at a time when the federal government, which still lists marijuana as an illegal drug, is considering ramping up enforcement against recreational use. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said last month his department is reviewing an Obama administration memo that gave states flexibility in passing marijuana laws.

Blaming conservatives, Trump signals new openness to Dems

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Sunday attacked conservative lawmakers for the failure of the Republican bill to replace former President Barack Obama’s health care law, as aides signaled a greater willingness to work with moderate Democrats on upcoming legislative battles from the budget and tax cuts to health care.

On Twitter, Trump complained: “Democrats are smiling in D.C. that the Freedom Caucus, with the help of Club For Growth and Heritage, have saved Planned Parenthood & Ocare!”

The Freedom Caucus is a hard-right group of more than 30 GOP House members who were largely responsible for blocking the bill to undo the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare.” The bill was pulled from the House floor Friday in a humiliating political defeat for the president, having lacked support from either the conservative Republicans or Democrats.

In additional fallout from Friday’s jarring setback, Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, said he was leaving the caucus. Poe tweeted Friday that some lawmakers “would’ve voted against the 10 Commandments.”

“We must come together to find solutions to move this country forward,” Poe said Sunday in a written statement. “Saying no is easy, leading is hard but that is what we were elected to do.”

Trump initially focused his blame on Democrats for the failure and predicted a dire future for the current law.

But on Sunday, his aides made clear that Trump would be seeking support from moderate Democrats, leaving open the possibility he could still revisit health care legislation. White House chief of staff Reince Priebus scolded conservative Republicans, explaining that Trump had felt “disappointed” that a “number of peo-

ple he thought were loyal to him that weren’t.”

“It’s time for the party to start governing,” Priebus said. “I think it’s time for our folks to come together, and I also think it’s time to potentially get a few moderate Democrats on board as well.”

As he ponders his next steps, Trump faces decisions on whether to back administrative changes to fix Obamacare or undermine it as prices for insurance plans rise in many markets. Over the weekend, the president tweeted a promise of achieving a “great healthcare plan” because Obamacare will “explode.”

On Sunday, Priebus did not answer directly regarding Trump’s choice, saying that fixes to the health law will have to come legislatively and he wants to ensure “people don’t get left behind.”

“I don’t think the president is closing the door on anything,” he said.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said Democrats stood ready to work with Trump to fix Obamacare if he is willing to drop attempts to repeal the law and not undermine it. He warned that Trump is destined to “lose again” on other parts of his agenda if he remains beholden to conservative Republicans.

“If he changes, he could have a different presidency,” Schumer said. “But he’s going to have to tell the Freedom Caucus and the hard-right special wealthy interests who are dominating his presidency ... he can’t work with them, and we’ll certainly look at his proposals.”

Their comments came after another day of finger-pointing among Republicans, both subtle and not-so subtle. On Saturday, Trump urged Americans in a tweet to watch Judge Jeanine Pirro’s program on Fox that night.

She led her show by calling for House Speaker Paul Ryan to resign, blaming him for defeat of the bill in the Republican-controlled chamber.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump has now laid out exactly what he wants in the “big, beautiful wall” that he’s promised to build on the U.S.-Mexico border. But his effort to build a huge hurdle to those entering the U.S. illegally faces impediments of its own.

It’s still not clear how Trump will pay for the wall that, as described in contracting notices, would be 30 feet high and easy on the eye for those looking at it from the north. The Trump administration will also have to contend with unfavorable geography and many legal battles.

A look at some of those obstacles:

MONEY

MEXICO CITY – The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico said Sunday that Mexican companies expressing interest in working on a border wall in the United States are betraying their country.

The archdiocese said in an editorial that Mexican companies have expressed willingness to supply materials or work on the wall proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Mexico opposes the wall.

The editorial was titled “Treason against the Homeland,” and said that “what is most surprising is the timidity of the Mexican government’s economic authorities, who have not moved firmly against these companies.”

In a meeting with steel companies in Mexico last week, Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo said the government

cut other federal spending to pay for the wall and boosts to border security, while increasing military spending.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters this past week that the administration was still looking at how the wall would be funded, adding that it hasn’t given up on Mexico footing the bill.

U.S.-Mexico border is in Texas and marked by the winding and twisting Rio Grande. A 1970 treaty with Mexico requires that anything built near that river not obstruct its flow. The same treaty applies to a stretch of border in Arizona, where the Colorado River marks the international boundary.

Some fencing that already is in place along the frontier is built well off the river, in some places nearly a mile

away from the border.

Trump will have to navigate not only the treaty maintained by the International Boundary and Water Commission but also various environmental regulations that protect some stretches of border and restrict what kind of structures can be built and where. The contracting notices of March 17 say the Trump administration wants the wall dug at least 6 feet into the ground.

Along parts of the border in California, environmentally sensitive sand dunes required that a “floating fence” was built to allow the natural movement of the sand.

LEGAL CHALLENGES

Nearly all of the land along the Texas border is privately held – much of it by people whose families have been in the region for generations – and buying their land won’t be easy, as Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama discovered. Lawyers for both administrations fought in court with private landowners. Obama’s efforts to buy privately held land in the Rio Grande Valley have carried over into Trump’s term.

The Trump administration appears to be preparing for the legal fight and included a request for more lawyers to handle such cases in its budget proposal. Spicer said this past week the administration would “take the steps necessary” to fulfill Trump’s promise to secure the southern border.

U.S.-backed forces capture Syrian air base from IS

The Associated Press BEIRUT – U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish forces captured a strategically important air base from Islamic State militants in north Syria on Sunday in the first major victory for the group since the U.S. airlifted the forces behind enemy lines four days ago.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces announced they had captured the Tabqa air base, 28 miles west of Raqqa, the Islamic State group’s de facto capital in Syria.

The U.S., which has provided substantial air and ground support to the SDF, ferried hundreds of SDF forces, as well as U.S. military advisers and U.S. artillery, behind IS lines earlier this week.

The airlift was a major development to the SDF’s multi-front campaign to bear down on Raqqa, as U.S.-backed Iraqi forces simultaneously press their assault to seize Mo-

sul from the militants, in neighboring Iraq. SDF forces are within 6 miles of Raqqa from the north.

Tabqa air base was captured by IS militants from the Syrian government in August 2014. Shortly afterward, the group announced it had killed about 200 government soldiers at the base, in a mass killing recorded and distributed on video over social media.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group also reported the SDF advance.

Meanwhile there were conflicting reports over whether civilians had begun evacuating Raqqa because of concerns over the stability of the nearby Tabqa Dam. The militants said U.S.-led coalition airstrikes had locked up the dam’s gates, causing the water level behind it to rise. The activist group Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently reported that IS had ordered Raqqa residents to evacuate, though with-

out their furniture. Tabqa Dam is 25 miles upstream of Raqqa on the Euphrates River.

U.S.-led coalition forces said the dam was structurally sound.

U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish forces were in control of a spillway north of the dam “which can be used to alleviate pressure on the dam if need be,” the coalition said in a letter to The Associated Press.

The coalition says the dam has not been structurally damaged, to its knowledge, and says it has not targeted the dam.

The Observatory said there were no evacuations happening from Raqqa, as did the activist-run Raqqa 24 media center.

Raqqa 24 said engineers employed by the militants had restored power to the dam’s gates and the structure was functioning normally.

The reports from Raqqa came as a leading Syrian opposition group called on the U.S.-led coalition to stop

targeting residential areas in and around the city.

The Syrian National Coalition said in a statement that it was “increasingly concerned” about civilian casualties in the campaign against the extremist group. The exiled opposition coalition is taking part in U.N.-mediated talks in Geneva.

The SNC said it believed coalition forces were behind an airstrike that killed at least 30 civilians sheltering in a school in the countryside outside Raqqa on March 21. The coalition has said it is investigating.

The U.S. has provided substantial air and ground support to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, who are closing in on Raqqa as well as the Tabqa Dam. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said coalition airstrikes have killed 89 civilians in Raqqa province in the past week, including 35 in a school in the village of Mansoura.

Balancing protecting our kids, keeping perspective When life GUEST VIEW throws us a curveball, many times Lane human nature is Abrell to look outside ourselves for the cause or reason. Sometimes, we look for a “scapegoat” on which to pin our unhappiness or troubles.

When we are younger, we see the world through a “the world revolves around me” lens. Then, when we have our own kids, we want to protect our children from disappointment.

Parents will often advocate for their children to protect from adversity or the sting of normal failure.

Sometimes that’s the right thing to do. Other times, not so much.

Those parental instincts contributed to several parents speaking (as reported in the Joliet Herald-News) before the District 202 Board of Education on March 20 about their displeasure over the atmosphere surrounding the Plainfield South High School boys basketball program and, specifically, the head coach.

As both a parent (two of my three teenagers are high school athletes) and the superintendent of schools, I appreciate their input, perspective and efforts to support their children. Each parent has received a letter from me assuring them that their concerns have been heard and given active consideration.

The letter also makes clear that the areas such as selection of the team, playing time (based on skill or work ethic or attitude), expectations of player comportment or conduct, etc. – are, traditionally, appropriately, and will continue to be in District 202 the prerogatives of any head coach and the coaching staff.

Certainly, the coach also is responsible for establishing and maintaining a positive culture and climate in his or her athletic program. However, such a culture and climate also requires “buy-in” from the players and others involved.

Extracurricular activities teach young people valuable life lessons and skills including but not limited to, competitiveness, discipline, a positive work ethic and attitude, leadership, the ability to listen and concentrate, to play and work within a set of rules, satisfaction and appreciation of being part of a team.

Still, everyone, including parents, must remember that participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege, not a right. Suggesting otherwise through our adult actions – even with good intentions – teaches our children the wrong lesson.

Our youth desperately need highly dedicated and motivated adults to guide and teach them. Extracurricular coaches and sponsors are more successful at guiding, motivating, and disciplining young people than any group that I am aware of (and they do it for peanuts).

While there always is room for improvement, we need help and support from many different sources – including our parents and families – to make significant change for the better and continue to Prepare Learners for the Future (on and off the court) in District 202.

Juvenile records require delicate treatment Believing doesn’t make it true, and when it comes to court records, it’s not belief that counts.

Consider this widely held belief that juveniles with a criminal record get a fresh start when they turn 18. Lawyers believe it and so do their clients. Judges believe it, and so do the clerks who manage the records.

But the problem is that it’s only sort of true.

A recent study by researchers at the Muskie School of Government at the University of Southern Maine found that there is a widespread misunderstanding about the law. A juvenile criminal record can be sealed by a court, but the process is not automatic and past offenses might be showing up in a job seeker’s criminal background checks without his knowledge, making a smooth transition to a straight and narrow adulthood tougher than necessary.

The report “Unsealed Fate: The Unintended Consequences of Inadequate Safeguarding of Juvenile Records in Maine” found few people who under-

stood how the system really works.

“The myth of records being sealed automatically at 18 was being repeated by so many different players,” said Susy Hawes, one of the study’s authors. “Everyone we spoke to in the system had that belief.

It’s a vicious cycle of believing something and then hearing it again and believing it.”

Juvenile records are treated differently than those of adults for a good reason. The juvenile system is designed to rehabilitate a young person who has made some bad choices during a time when their brains are not fully formed. Most young people get through that period without violating the law with support from good families and strong communities, but even the best kids can be led astray.

It’s right to expect an adult to live with the consequences of his choices for the rest of his life, but it’s in the interest of both the juvenile and society in general to give them another chance to get on the right track.

Aside from the fact that it isn’t well understood, there

is nothing wrong with the current law.

A juvenile has to wait three years after a conviction to petition the court to have his record sealed.

To have a chance at closing that chapter of his life from others’ eyes, the offender has to have a clean record, paid all fines and completed all other instructions and requirements. Even then a judge could refuse to grant the petition, and the former juvenile offender cannot appeal.

It’s a good law because it gives a youthful offender the incentive to straighten out his act.

The law gives the court a chance to help a kid who made a mistake while protecting the community from someone who would hide behind juvenile confidentiality while continuing to commit crimes.

Hopefully, this report will be used by lawyers, judges, clerks and probation officers in their training so they can give young offenders and their families the correct information.

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet West baseball team is moving into a conference – the Southwest Prairie – where dominating pitching will be prevalent.

The Tigers will not necessarily contribute to the league’s depth in that department, but coach John Karczewski feels they can have some success with the arms they have available.

“We beat Lincoln-Way Central [last week], 4-1, and Noah Plunge and Adam Herron both pitched very well,” said Karczewski, whose team is 1-2 in the early going.

Herron, a junior, is the younger brother of former Tigers ace Jake Herron. “Adam worked very hard in the offseason to get into good shape, and he really battled against Lincoln-Way Central,” Karczewski said.

Plunge, a senior, and Herron figure to be two mainstays on the mound, and several others also will be in the mix.

They include seniors Breven Daugherity, Jordan Anderson, TJ Murray and Tyler Spisak, along with junior Dylan Suca.

“We have a lot of arms,” Karczewski said. “We don’t necessarily have a dominator, but they all can pitch. It’s a nice thing to know we can throw any of four or five guys out there at any time.”

Helping that staff is a defense Karczewski said “could be strong up the middle. We have to play better defense than we did last year. Bad defense really hurt us. We’ve been working hard on defense.”

Four-year varsity player Eastin May is back behind the plate for his senior season, and junior Ben Rogina also is a quality catcher.

“We hadn’t given anyone the [uniform] No. 1 since Cody Grosse had it.

Now Tyler has it.”

Although finishing 10-21 last season, West did win two regional games.

The Tigers often were in games but came up short because the offense failed, especially in clutch situations.

Karczewski is hopeful this season will be different in that regard.

“I think we’ll hit,” he said.

Rounding out the infield will be first basemen Spisak and Suca along with two junior third basemen, Brett Johnson and Christian Rios. Johnson transferred in after playing at Joliet Catholic as a sophomore.

Plainfield East looking to take the next step

Shaw Media correspondent PLAINFIELD – This baseball season at Plainfield East may be the most definitive in the school’s eight-year history.

That’s because the Bengals captured the program’s first regional championship during its second consecutive 20-win season a year ago. Now comes the big question: What’s next?

“That was a good feeling, and now the kids are wondering what’s next,” Plainfield East coach Adam O’Reel said. “Hopefully, there’s a fire inside them to go further now and not accept that as good enough. We’re going to see what kind of fight we have.”

Leading the fight are a group of seven returning seniors and a deep and successful junior class that went 30-3 as freshmen two years ago.

“I like what I see so far, and we’re trying to put it all together,” O’Reel said. “We have seven seniors. We have a deep junior group that went 30-3 as freshmen. Now, they have to mix in with the seniors who have proven themselves by winning a regional last year.”

“Both of those guys can hit,” Karczewski said of Rios and Johnson.

“Brett is a left-handed hitter. We’ve had him in the 3-hole already. We will have five or six left-handed hitters in our lineup most of the time. For whatever reason, lefty hitters notoriously have been our best hitters.”

In the outfield, Karczewski said the Tigers will feature seniors Adam Scharf, Dylan Loftis and Nick Gulliford, and junior Lorenzo Serrato. The three seniors saw significant playing time last season. Scharf hit at the top of the lineup for much of 2016. Most of the Tigers’ juniors, meanwhile, were key members of the SWS Blue championship sophomore team last season.

“Our sophomores beat Lockport in a 19- or 20-inning game to win it outright,” Karczewski said. “Otherwise, they would have shared it with Lincoln-Way East.”

Karczewski is well aware the Tigers will go against hard throwers, and quality pitching in general, this season in the SPC. “We know that almost every game we will be facing someone who throw in the mid- to upper 80s,” he said. “But as long as we get good, quality at-bats,

Pitching and defense will be the calling cards for East. The pitching staff is led by senior Logan Schmitt, who went 3-1 last year with a 1.56 ERA. Juniors Andrew Hoffman, Billy Pierce, Ryan Louck, Luke Lamm, Ethan Flynn, Cameron Erickson and Daniel Balzhiser give the Bengals plenty of depth

and options in the first year the state is enacting pitch-count limits.

“Those guys are going to be battling for starting roles,” O’Reel said. “This year, we’re going to roll with who is hot or who is pitching well, especially with the pitch counts.”

An injured shoulder will relegate returning junior catcher Matt Pratscher to designated hitter to start the season. That means Joey Fox and Wheaton St. Francis transfer Liam Poe, both juniors, will handle the catching duties.

Senior David Salazar will move to shortstop from second base, senior Jason Knoebel returns at third base and senior Josh Schuetz is returning at first base. Senior Henry Tadla is the Bengals’ best defensive outfielder.

“We are a very deep team, very good defensively and we have a deep pitching staff,” O’Reel said.

Senior J.J. Zywiciel had a .448 on-base percentage in 2016. Knoebel struck out only six times in 70 plate appearances, and Salazar led the team with 20 runs scored to go with 14 RBIs. “I think we are a well-balanced, deep team, and we haven’t had that in the past,” O’Reel said. “That makes practice interesting. We’re going to have a lot of guys in and out of the

lineup, and that’s OK. That’s going to make us better.”

Senior Justin Blaney also returns and gives the infield some options. The talented junior class includes Drew Raspolich, Nick Baldassano, Dylan Carson, Jacob Havis, Cameron Erickson, Chris Marchinoe, Sean Hebreard, Dalton Crowder, Ethan Flynn, Frank Bryan, Elijah Herrera, Jacob Kerkstra and Liam Ritten.

“Our kids have more confidence than they ever had, and they know they can do it,” O’Reel said. “They figured it out. We played nonconventional last year and tried to manufacture runs as best we can. Our pitching and defense is going to keep us in games.

“I’ll figure out how to manufacture runs as best we can. We just need to play baseball and see how far that takes us.”

He said the Southwest Prairie Conference may be the best it’s ever been.

“I can honestly say our conference is the best around,” O’Reel said. “It’s as deep as it has ever been. Our success is going to be based on how we play every day. Our goals aren’t based on wins and losses or championships.

How we approach the game and what our principles are will lead us to success.”

Fitzgerald said his hitters were having some timing issues in the early going. The Eisenhower game began to change that.

“I feel our offense is going to do well,” he said. “We will see constant improvement. We want to be playing our best ball at regional time. That’s always the goal.”

The Steelmen’s lineup will feature seniors McNair, Langley, Malmfeldt, Ryan King and James Epting, all multiyear regulars. King will play some right field, first base and will catch occasionally. He will attend Wartburg College and play football and baseball.

Langley, who will catch and play first base, is headed to Robert Morris.

Malmfeldt, the team’s top returning hitter and a pitcher and infielder, will play at Aurora University. Three-sport standout McNair, the center fielder when not on the mound, committed last Friday to Wartburg, where he will join King in the football and baseball programs.

Epting, who pitched the victory over Eisenhower, also plays the infield and will join Langley at Robert Morris.

Two juniors with some varsity experience, third baseman Greg Honiotes and outfielder/pitcher John Slattery, also will be counted on to add some punch to the lineup.

As for the all-important middle infield defense, Fitzgerald said he is likely to go young.

“We have a freshman, James Zdanwic, who goes by DeAngelo,” he said.

“He probably will be at second base, and Nate Magolan, a junior, probably will be at shortstop for the most part.”

If the Steelmen can score runs, they will improve on their 6-26 record of a year ago.

“I told our guys we are going to have to score more runs than the other team, not hold them down to fewer runs than we score,” Fitzgerald said.

“By that I mean, we don’t have anybody on the mound who is going to

overpower teams, but we have to hit.

We’ve been stressing timing early on.

We have to do that. We have to hunt fastballs and hit the ball off the barrel.

“We lost seven games by one run last year. We were a very competitive team for the most part but just did not get the clutch hits we need to get this year. The first couple games this season, that is where we struggled. We’ve got to drive guys in. If we do that, we will be playing very, very good baseball by mid-season and by season’s end.”

Central and Joliet West, of course, have joined the Southwest Prairie Conference this school year. With the strength of the SouthWest Suburban Blue, which the Steelmen left, and the SPC, jumping from the frying pan into the fire is applicable.

“We’re moving into a conference with five [defending] regional champs,” Fitzgerald said. “It just shows how strong our area is.

“This area, the area around St. Louis and obviously the Chicago Catholic League are the best areas for baseball in the state. It will be fun getting to play against some of these other coaches. You have to beat the best to be the best, and we’re excited for the challenge. We have to be scrappy and get clutch hitting, and we’ll compete with them.”

Five individuals, two relays win at indoor Top Times SUBMITTED REPORTS BLOOMINGTON – Five track and field athletes and two relays from area schools won events in the Illinois Top Times Indoor Championship at Illinois Wesleyan University.

In Class 3A, Plainfield North’s Marcellus Moore won the 60 meters 6.86 seconds and 200 (22.13), Lincoln-Way West’s Jenna Diers captured the 800 (2:16.21), Lockport’s John Meyer took first in shot put 60 feet, 3 inches, Lincoln-Way East’s girls won the 4x400 relay (4:01.39) and Minooka’s boys team of Jordan Freese, Matt Schofield, Soren Knudsen and Hector Ramos finished first in the 4x800 relay (8:04.73).

In Class 1A, Dwight’s Daly Galloway won the 3,200 (11:05.86) and Seneca’s Cora Wilkinson took first in long jump (17-2.25).

JOLIET – Good things are happening for the Joliet Central baseball team.

The Steelmen (1-2) have been competitive through the early portion of the season for all but the last few innings against three-time defending state champion Providence. They are excited about having the opportunity to host quarterfinal and semifinal games in the WJOL/Don Ladas Memorial Tournament, which will be played Thursday and Saturday.

Best of all, third-year coach Kevin Fitzgerald says he is working with “a group of guys who have been very invested in this program.”

Central picked up its first victory Friday, 11-1, over Eisenhower, as the offense Fitzgerald felt would come appeared to arrive. JoJo McNair went 4 for 4, Ricky Malmfeldt and Tom Langley both 3 for 4. Langley drove in four runs.

“We lost our first game to T.F. South, 7-6, in eight innings,” Fitzgerald noted. “Against Providence, we played OK for four innings. JoJo [McNair], the jack of all trades around here, was on the mound and pitching well. But we grounded into three double plays, two with the bases loaded, and we can’t

Second to none: Kyle Larson hangs on to win at Fontana

FONTANA, Calif. – A blistering first in qualifying. A surprising first in the Xfinity Series race.

And a steady, tenacious first when it really mattered on Sunday.

Kyle Larson was second to nobody in his home state.

Larson persevered through four late restarts to win at Fontana, adding his second career victory to his overall Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series points lead.

“Lots of fun to be Kyle Larson right now,” Larson said with a grin. “Our race cars are really fast in Xfinity and Cup, so it’s a blast to show up to the race track every week.”

Larson finished second in each of the last three races, but the Sacramento-area native’s Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet was the class of the field at Auto Club Speedway all weekend long.

He claimed the second pole of his career Friday, and he also won the Xfinity race Saturday in a result that surprised him much more than his Cup triumph.

The 24-year-old prodigy became just the fourth driver to sweep a race weekend at Fontana.

“Our cars are really good at every race track right now,” Larson said. “I feel like I have a shot to win every time I go to the race track. That’s always a lot of fun. That’s something I’ve always

hoped for, to get to a point like that in my NASCAR career. In the past, I had race tracks where I knew I would be good, but right now, we’re going to some tracks that aren’t good for me and running up front. It’s a lot of fun to have that confidence.”

Fontana’s bumpy 2-mile track particularly suits Larson’s skills, and he was unshakable during the late drama and jockeying typical to the five-wide asphalt one hour east of Los Angeles.

After surging up from fourth to first with four new tires before the final caution, he made one last outstanding restart and cruised through two overtime laps to win.

“This is just amazing,” Larson said.

“We have been so good all year long, three seconds in a row. I’ve been watching all the TV, like, ‘He doesn’t know how to win.’ But we knew how to win today, so that was good.”

Brad Keselowski was second, and Clint Bowyer came in third for his best finish since June 2015 and his first topfive finish in 52 races. Martin Truex Jr. was fourth after challenging Larson aggressively, and Joey Logano roared up to fifth.

Larson added to his other career victory, which came on NASCAR’s other 2-mile oval at Michigan.

After an early NASCAR season full of dominant cars getting stung at the finish, Larson wasted none of his advantage.

“He’s on a really nice roll, and it takes everything,” said Keselowski, who surged into second after two outstanding late restarts. “This is a sport of speed, execution and luck, and when you’re on a roll like that, you’ve got all three on your side.”

Racing development driver who landed with Chip Ganassi Racing in 2014, showing steady promise that built to this spectacular season to date.

“I think he’s got a lot of runway, and we don’t even have the engines pulled up yet,” Ganassi said of Larson’s potential. “I think he’s got a long way to go. I have no idea what he’s capable of. Your guess is as good as mine.”

Larson is only the second driver in Fontana history to win from the pole, joining six-time race champion Jimmie Johnson, who did it in 2008. Johnson finished 21st after starting near the back in his backup car.

Johnson, Keselowski and Phoenix winner Ryan Newman all sustained minor damage early on, but Larson was fast from the start.

Larson won the first stage of 60 laps, earning his first stage victory of the season, but lost his lead during a slow stop after getting too close to the wall on pit road. Truex won the second stage, but Larson slipped past him to reclaim the lead on the first lap of the final stage.

The leaders pitted under caution with 20 laps to go, but Truex had his first slow stop all day and slipped five spots down the field to seventh. Larson won the race off pit road and had a fine restart, but Matt Kenseth slid hard into the wall moments later after minor contact with Truex.

Kenseth failed to finish for the third time in five races this season.

CUBS SPRING TRAINING

Will he stay or will he go? Szczur out of minor-league options

pfinley@suntimes.com MESA, Ariz. – Matt Szczur heard Joe Maddon’s public praise of him.

What it means, though, is another question.

“I feel like Joe puts a lot of messages in the media, and he lets us know that,” the Cubs outfielder said Sunday. “So it’s up in the air to me. I know he likes me. Apparently he loves me.

So it’s a good feeling, to be wanted.”

But by whom? Because he is out of minor-league options, Szczur could be traded if the Cubs decide he won’t fit on the Opening Night roster Sunday against the Cardinals.

Maddon was effusive in his appreciation for Szczur on Saturday – “I love Matt,” he said – but was sending a message. Asked if Maddon was stumping for his inclusion on the Cubs roster or advertising his services to other teams with those words, Szczur smiled.

“I think he was doing a little bit of both,” Szczur said before the Cubs lost a split-squad game to the Padres, 9-4.

“I don’t think anything he said was false. I think that he’s honest, and I appreciate his honesty.

“I try to do everything for the team, and all I wanna do is win, whether it’s coming off the bench or starting. Matt Szczur For me, I’m trying to help this team right now that I’m on win.”

An American League source said the Cubs are “listening” to proposals for Szczur. The Twins and Braves are interested in Szczur – and are among the many teams that could give him more at-bats than the Cubs, who have Jason Heyward, Kyle Schwarber, John Jay and Albert Almora slated for the outfield.

Bryant can man the corner outfield spots, too – but the sheer number of part-time outfielders doesn’t necessarily equate to quality depth.

Increased playing time on another team has its appeal, Szczur said.

“Obviously it would be enticing,” he said. “But for me right now I’m trying to win the day right here. I put myself in a good position for this team or whatever team I’m on.”

Perhaps the Giants could be a good fit – but it’s doubtful the Cubs would deal him to another National League contender. Maddon made clear Saturday that he views Szczur as a bigleague player. He’ll be just that next week, whether it’s with the Cubs or someone else.

“It forces their hand to kinda make a move,” Szczur said of being out of minor-league options. “Whether they want me on the roster or want to make a move otherwise.”

Maddon said the Cubs hadn’t yet

decided between Szczur and left-handed-hitting infielder Tommy La Stella, who went 1 for 3 with an RBI in Las Vegas and is hitting .273 with two homers and three RBIs this spring. La Stella has options left, though, and the Cubs won’t let his three-week holdout after last year’s minor-league demotion dissuade them from sending him down.

Szczur went 0 for 4 back in Mesa, but is hitting .301 with one home run and seven RBIs during Cactus League play.

“Listen, this guy as a teammate, you’re not gonna get a better one – and nobody’s gonna get a better one on any team, for any reason,” Maddon said of Szczur on Saturday.

The outfielder was flattered, even as he tried to parse what message, if any, was being sent.

“That’s great praise from a manager who’s very established,” he said. “It definitely felt good.”

South Carolina beats Florida, headed to Final Four

NEW YORK – South Carolina added a missing piece to its rich basketball history.

The school of Frank McGuire, Kevin Joyce, Brian Winters, Mike Dunleavy and Alex English is going to the Final Four for the first time.

Add the names Sindarius Thornwell and Frank Martin to the top of the list.

Thornwell’s 26 points and the Gamecocks’ swarming zone defense meant a 77-70 victory over Florida on Sunday and a berth in the Final Four.

Martin, he of the booming voice and terrifying faces, led the seventh-seeded Gamecocks to the biggest victory in school history and now they will face Gonzaga, the No. 1 seed from the West Regional, in the Final Four on Saturday at Glendale, Arizona.

“Anyone that’s in sports dreams of moments like this,” said Martin, who was doused with water and dancing as soon as he entered the locker room.

“It’s not something that you start dreaming it the year you win 25 games.

You dream it every single day.”

The game was as close as expected until the final minute. There were 14 lead changes and 10 ties. The last lead change came on two free throws by Thornwell with 2:24 left that made it 65-63. Fourth-seeded Florida managed just three field goals over the final 3:55.

Thornwell, the regional MVP, followed the deciding free throws with a nice assist to Maik Kotsar for a fourpoint lead. It seemed Thornwell, who scored eight straight points for the Gamecocks, always was where he needed to be including making a steal with 40 seconds left that turned into a 73-68 lead.

“Plays needed to be made down the stretch and I stepped up and made plays,” Thornwell said.

Teammate Duane Notice knew Thornwell would come through.

“He’s capable of doing anything on both sides of the basketball. So it doesn’t surprise me,” he said. “His senior leadership just kicked in. He don’t want us to lose. He don’t want our season to end.”

“Thornwell was just being Thornwell,” Florida coach Mike White said of the SEC player of the year. “He’s one of the best players in the country.”

PJ Dozier added 17 points for the Gamecocks, Chris Silva had 13 and Kotsar 12.

Justin Leon had 18 points for the Gators who managed a 40-33 halftime lead on 7-for-12 shooting from 3-point range. But that was it. Florida was 0 for 14 from beyond the arc in the sec-

ond half, a lot like the 0-for-17 effort the Gators had in their first meeting with South Carolina this season.

“We still got our open looks, but they just, I guess they just went farther than what they were in the first half,” Leon said.

South Carolina, which forced Florida into 16 turnovers, finished 23 for 31 from the free-throw line, including a 9-for-10 effort from Thornwell.

It was the third straight game the Gamecocks were trailing at the half and went on to win.

“We felt like we was doing the right things. We felt like everything was going good for us, it was just the ball wasn’t falling in, and we just needed a couple more stops,” Thornwell said.

“So going into halftime we always just buckled in and locked in on what we needed to do to win and took it one possession at a time.”

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Roy Williams went all “Gone With the Wind” when a player asked about his North Carolina Tar Heels making the last shot Sunday to edge Kentucky to the Final Four.

And the coincidence that the Tar Heels have been on the other end of similar shots recently, like in the 2016 national championship and a wild December game against the Wildcats.

“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a ...,” Williams said with a smile, quoting Clark Gable’s famed line as Rhett Butler. “I didn’t care what he was talking about.”

Luke Maye hit a jumper with 0.3 seconds left and top-seeded North Carolina held off Kentucky, 75-73, to earn the Tar Heels’ second straight trip to the Final Four, winning a showdown of college basketball’s elite in the South Regional.

The national semifinal will be the 20th for North Carolina, where the Tar Heels (31-7) will play Midwest champ Oregon on Saturday in Glendale, Arizona.

North Carolina took control with 12 straight points over the final five minutes, a run similar to what it used a week ago to beat Arkansas. The Tar Heels finished the game with a 16-9 run.

Kentucky’s freshmen De’Aaron Fox hit a 3 and Malik Monk quickly added two more, one with 7.2 seconds left and defenders in his face to tie the game at 73.

“I probably should have called time

left the court with towels over their heads, and Fox was the last to leave.

The Wildcats had hoped their talented freshmen would carry them. Bam Adebayo and Fox each had 13 points, and Monk, the Southeastern Conference player of the year, finished with 12. Fox and Adebayo wept side by side in the locker room.

Never before had the NCAA tournament pitted powerhouse programs that have so dominated March. This South final featured Kentucky with the most tournament wins all-time with 124 and North Carolina just behind with 120 (now 121).

This was just the fourth time these blue bloods have met in a regional final. The result was much the same as the others, with North Carolina now 3-1 against Kentucky as the Tar Heels avenged a 103-100 loss on Dec. 17 in Las Vegas.

Kentucky led for less than four minutes in a game North Carolina had a big edge on the boards (44-34) and inside, where the Tar Heels outscored the Wildcats, 34-26.

Officials didn’t help the flow of this game calling fouls left and right, though Kentucky took the brunt with its star trio of freshmen all picking up two fouls each in the half. Fox played only eight minutes of the first half after picking up his second foul with 12:23 left. Butler did it: Bulls pull away for win

MILWAUKEE – Jimmy Butler rarely passed up opportunities to share the ball. Nikola Mirotic took advantage of his open shots.

Inspired by unselfish play, the Bulls pulled away in the second half for a 10994 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday to keep pace in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Mirotic tied a season high with 28 points, while Butler had 20 points and a career-high 14 assists. It was the third straight game with double-digit assists for Butler, who also is the Bulls’ leading scorer (23.6 points).

“My mantra is always to pass the ball to the open guy whether it’s late game, early game,” Butler said.

The Bulls have won two of three games, with Butler reaching double-digit assists and Mirotic scoring 28 in each victory. Against Milwaukee, Mirotic was the beneficiary of open looks with Butler and Rajon Rondo (nine assists) drawing defenders on drives into the

lane.

“I just don’t think we trusted our defense tonight like we should have,” Milwaukee forward Khris Middleton said.

Butler and Rondo “did a great job of collapsing our defense and finding guys.”

It’s an ideal formula for the Bulls to stay in the playoff picture with eight games left in the regular season.

The Bulls were tied with Detroit coming into the day, 11/2 games behind Miami for the final playoff spot. The Bulls also finished the season series against Milwaukee at 1-3 this season, avoiding a sweep to their Central Division rival.

Coach Fred Hoiberg hopes his team can build off this win with games coming up against defending champion Cleveland and another playoff hopeful, Atlanta. The Bulls also outrebounded Milwaukee, 49-34.

“We’ve got to understand what makes us successful,” Hoiberg said. “When we’re committed to moving the ball like we did today ... trying to put them in spots on the floor where they’re maybe not as successful and when we rebound.”

AUGUSTA, Maine – What a croc!

A student at a University of Maine campus is in trouble for taking his five baby pet alligators inside a taxicab.

The pet reptiles began crawling around the cab Tuesday after a box tipped over. Cab driver Frank Folsom said he helped round the reptiles, each longer than a foot.

The Kennebec Journal report that 20-year-old University of Maine at Augusta student Yifan Sun from China received a summons because alligators are not allowed to be kept in Maine.

The Augusta Police Department said he’s charged with importing or possessing wildlife without a permit.

Sun told police he kept the alligators as pets and was taking them with him to visit someone in Waterville. He declined to speak at length with a reporter from the newspaper.

24 Eustachian tube blockage can cause problems Dear Doctor: My hearing loss is related to my Eustachian tubes: They stay closed. I can open them and improve my hearing by holding my nose and blowing, but the effect lasts only a short time. Hearing aids don’t help. What can I do?

Dear Reader: First, let’s consider the size and location of the Eustachian tubes, one on each side of your head. Only half a centimeter wide, each one starts behind the nose and travels through cartilage and bone toward the middle ear, an air-filled chamber bordered on one side by the eardrum. The pressure within the middle ear should be equal to the air pressure outside, and the Eustachian tube is the only way for the body to equalize these pressures. This gas pressure homeostasis is necessary for optimal hearing.

The most common reason that the Eustachian tube closes is from inflammation within the tube and secretions that can block it from opening. With the tube closed, the middle ear has no way for the air to go in or out. When that happens, the air in the middle ear gets absorbed by the surrounding structures, creating a negative pressure in the middle ear.

The sensation is similar to how your ears feel at the bottom of a pool. This negative pressure makes it even more difficult for the Eustachian tube to open, increasing to the point where fluid starts to fill the middle ear. In severe cases, blockage of the Eustachian tube can lead to vertigo and balance problems.

Now let’s look at the possible causes for a closed Eustachian tube. In my experience, the most common cause is chronic nasal congestion, either from allergies or environmental irritants. Infection of the adenoids, sinus or nose also are likely causes; to determine this, an ear, nose and throat doctor would visualize the adenoids to assess their condition.

Chronic nasal swelling is another potential culprit. If that’s the case, medications such as nasal steroids, leukotriene inhibitors and antihistamines could decrease the

Note that one study, however, did not show significant change in Eustachian tube dysfunction with the use of a common steroid delivered via nasal spray, Nasacort.

In addition, an over-the-counter expectorant, guaifenesin, could thin secretions sufficiently in the Eustachian tube to help clear it.

Essentially, the treatment depends on the cause. For inflammation and closure of the Eustachian tube caused by infection, antibiotics can help. For inflammation caused by acid reflux, which can lead to inflammation in the nasopharynx, look for ways to decrease acid reflux. If adenoids are blocking the Eustachian tube, the adenoids can be surgically removed.

As for medications, if those are ineffective, either balloon dilation of the Eustachian tube or laser therapy can be used to clear the opening in the nasopharynx. Talk to your doctor about your symptoms. Eustachian tube dysfunction can be treated and, because symptoms can worsen, it should not be ignored.

Bridge players make lots of mistakes. Bridge writers ought to make far fewer, if only because there is software to help with deal analysis.

When I read about today’s deal, the author said that if declarer in four spades played to ruff hearts in the dummy after the trump lead, he would fail. Is that true?

South was right to open one spade despite having only 11 highcard points. He had the majors, two aces and an easy rebid. He also had a seven-loser hand (two spades, two hearts, one diamond and two clubs) should partner have a fit for one of the majors. North described a gameforce with three-card spade support.

(In two-over-one game-forcing, North would have rebid two spades, and South would have jumped to game with his minimum opening.)

First, South checked his losers. He had none in spades, three in hearts, one in diamonds and one in clubs -- two too many. But then he wisely counted winners if he did ruff two hearts on the board. He saw five spades, one heart, two clubs and those two ruffs -- 10 in all.

Declarer won the first trick with dummy’s spade king, played the heart queen to the king and ace, ruffed a heart low, played a club to his ace and ruffed another heart.

Then he could have either led the club queen to establish his second trick in the suit or exited with a diamond to open up a channel to his hand with a diamond ruff so that he could draw trumps.
