Lincoln-Way D-210 board approves agreement with support staff union

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The Lincoln-Way School District 210 Board approved ratifying a three-year agreement with the district’s support staff union.

The agreement was approved at a special meeting Wednesday by board President Dee Molinare and board members Christopher Kosel and Joseph Kosteck.

Board member Ronald Lullo abstained. No other board members attended.

The Lincoln-Way High School Educational Support Professionals union and the district were engaged in bargaining since June 30, when the agreement between the two parties expired.

“We felt it was a fair negotiation,” said Scott Tingley, the district’s superintendent.

The new agreement is retroactive to last

According to the previous support staff union agreement, Educational Support Professionals is the exclusive bargaining agent for full- and part-time paraprofessionals, custodians, maintenance staff, media center library assistants, library secretaries and security staff.

Hoffmeyer said. “While the other teens ran, Hamad punched this boy in the nose and face at least 12 times.”

That teen was given first aid by Lockport Township paramedics and was taken by his parents for a medical exam, Hoffmeyer said.

After Hamad was identified by the victims, deputies went to his residence in the 21800 block of Juneau Court, but learned he was not home, Hoffmeyer said. Detectives later contacted Hamad on the phone and met with him. He was arrested on three counts of misdemeanor battery and released from jail early Wednesday.

The officers knocked on the door and were met by Treston Adams, 24, who witnesses identified as the man who fired the gun, Gregory said.

Treston “When they searched the room, they found a bullet hole Adams in the floor, three semiautomatic shell casings in the room and a black Colt BB gun,” Gregory said. “Witnesses said another man had left with the real gun, but Adams had also stood in the parking lot and fired in the air.”

Adams, of the 200 block of Madison Street in Joliet, was arrested on charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm and reckless discharge of a firearm and booked into the Will County Jail.

Gregory said several people had been at the room, including Tylesha Jackson, 20, of Rockdale, who refused to leave when management asked police to escort her from the premises.

Jackson was arrested on charges of criminal trespassing and resisting arrest.

Dismissal of substitute teachers

The board also approved a resolution giving notice of dismissal to three non-tenured teachers Wednesday. Tingley said that before the end of the school year, the teachers’ contracts are not renewed and they’re released.

“This has not been due to their performance. It’s something procedural that we do each year,” he said.

LOCAL BRIEFS Police: Plainfield Township man punched 3 teens

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP – A Plainfield Township man was arrested after allegedly beating three teenagers on the street Tuesday.

Shortly before 2:45 p.m., a 16-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy had gotten off the school bus at Junction Drive and Juneau Court and started walking Hani Hamad home when a car came speeding up to them, Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

“Hani Hamad, 45, got out and started pushing the 16-year-old, then punching him in the face. He then punched the 14-yearold several times and threatened to get a gun from his car,” Hoffmeyer said.

Investigators later learned the teens had a previous conflict with Hamad’s son.

“Another 16-year-old boy who lives on the street heard the commotion and got in between Hamad and the 14-year-old,”

Tingley said the agreement includes a 1.5 percent salary increase for union members for the current fiscal year, a 2 percent increase in fiscal 2018 and then having the salary increase tied to the Consumer Price Index in fiscal 2019.

CPI measures the average price of consumer goods and services, and many collective bargaining agreements tie wage increases to it, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Tingley said that if state lawmakers were to pass legislation that would negatively affect the district’s revenues – such as a property tax freeze – then in the third year of the agreement, district officials would renegotiate with the union.

Legislators react to increase, point finger at lack of state funding

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – On March 14, the Joliet Junior College Board approved a base tuition increase of $19 per credit hour, increasing the price per credit hour to $144 after fees are included.

Students will pay 8.7 percent more than they do now per credit hour, beginning in the fall semester.

Several board members said their vote of approval was because of a lack of state funding and inaction by state politicians. Trustee Alicia Morales was the only member to vote against the increase, which will help fill a projected $4.4 million JJC budget gap for one year.

College officials proposed the tuition increase under the assumption JJC will receive only 50 percent of state funding because of the ongoing state budget crisis.

Robert Galick, administrative services vice president, said at the meeting that $16 of the $19 tuition increase is because of the absence of state funding. Galick said the increase is intended to be a one-year stopgap to overcome Springfield’s fiscal woes.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said “they’re correct” in response to the board’s placing blame on state legislators.

State Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, said he felt similarly. ”The state is putting the board in a situation where they may not have a way out. We’re certainly putting them in a tough circumstance,” Batinick said. “I’m working to rectify it, but it’s been painfully slow and frustrating.”

McGuire, who is chairman of the Illinois Senate’s Higher Education Committee, noted that last April legislators agreed to a $600 million supplemental appropriation that passed both sides of the General Assembly unanimously. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed it within days.

“I recently asked Rauner’s budget director what the administration’s plan is for this spring,” McGuire said. “The director told me there are no plans for supplemental appropriation.”

McGuire said that means there’s no support from the governor’s office for educational appropriations.

“This means the governor is unwilling to pass a stopgap budget for the second half of this year, until he

“This continues the uncertainty that plagues school students and their families.”

Batinick said state funding of higher education has been “erratic at best.”

“There were promises made to them twice from the old capital bill that they’re still waiting on,” Batinick said. “Funding has been slowed or cut in terms of regular appropriations.

I’m aware of it and frustrated by it.”

McGuire said a grand bargain negotiated by Senate leaders fell apart after Rauner called for a permanent property tax freeze and derailed the bargain by directing “every Republican senator willing to vote for it,” except for Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno, R-Lemont, to withdraw support.

Galick presented the board with a chart at the meeting last week that showed state funding was about 5 per-

cent of the college’s total revenue, while property taxes come in at about 58 percent and tuition makes up about 34 percent.

McGuire noted community colleges were once envisioned to get a third of their funding from three different sources – the state, property taxes and tuition. That balance doesn’t exist today.

McGuire said negotiations continue between Radogno and Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago.

JJC’s tuition has doubled in the past 10 years. But it’s still in the range of other community colleges in northeastern Illinois, and cheaper than most four-year universities. Before fees, community colleges in the region range from $102.15 per credit hour at College of DuPage to $134 per credit hour at Kankakee Community College.

Schools have varying fees for things such as capital improvements, labs and technology, and varying discounts for seniors.

Candidate may file complaint over questioning

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet City Council candidate Rachel Ventura said Wednesday that she is considering filing complaints regarding her treatment at a City Council meeting this week.

by Ventura, who is not a council member now, has become the subject of an investigation by the Rachel city’s inspector general. Ventura That investigation was announced after a police union leader, speaking during a public comment session at the end of the council meeting Tuesday, accused Ventura of putting police lives in danger by obtaining their home addresses for a campaign mailing.

Ventura happened to be at the meeting for another matter. She was asked to speak with the inspector general after she explained how she obtained police

addresses by viewing public records, including records posted on the city’s own website.

Ventura appeared willing to talk to the inspector general at the time. But on Wednesday she said she should not have been questioned.

“I’m an average citizen,” she said.

“They don’t have a right to investigate me as a private citizen.”

Ventura said she plans to report the incident to the Illinois attorney general’s office and also is considering filing a complaint with the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, which regulates attorneys.

“It was truly unfair to bring that up at a public meeting like that,” Ventura said.

Inspector General Chris Regis also said Wednesday that he does not have any authority to investigate Ventura, but said that’s not what he is doing.

Plainfield man kicks, spits, yells during arrest in Joliet

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police said a Plainfield man continued to struggle and fight with police officers while he was being taken into custody Wednesday morning after a domestic disturbance in Joliet.

At 8:49 a.m. police were called to the 1400 block of West Hampton Drive after witnesses Suhrob reported a man in paja- Sobirov mas chasing a woman carrying a baby, Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said. A responding officer was directed to the 5100 block of Edgewater Drive and turned the corner to find Suhrob Sobirov, 31, being restrained by two furniture deliverymen.

“He’d come up and asked them for a cigarette, but after they didn’t give him one, he started scuffling with them,” Gregory said. “They held him down, but when he saw the squad car, he broke away, jumped onto the hood of the squad car and started striking the windshield with his cellphone.”

Sobirov then allegedly struck the officer in the head with the phone before a second officer arrived and joined the

attempt to take him to the ground.

“During this struggle, Sobirov kicked the first officer in the head and spat on him before he was secured and handcuffed,” Gregory said.

Sobirov reportedly yelled several times about his impending divorce and refused to enter the squad car. Gregory said he would keep his body limp when being picked up, then stuck his feet in the door jam to keep from being put in the back until a larger vehicle was brought.

“Based on his behavior, the watch commander made the decision to have him taken directly to jail, but the jail refused to take him, so we did have to process him here at the station,” Gregory said.

Gregory said five officers had to restrain the 6-foot-3, 160-pound man to take fingerprints and a mugshot before Sobirov could be sent back to the county jail once he was positively identified.

Police did not locate the woman he allegedly chased through the neighborhood. The deliverymen did not wish to press charges.

Sobirov was charged with two counts of aggravated battery and two counts of criminal damage to government property.

Regis said he is investigating whether anyone on city staff released a list of police officers’ addresses.

“I’m investigating whether there was a leak anywhere within the city,” Regis said.

Regis would not say whether he was satisfied with Ventura’s explanation that she obtained the addresses of the police officers on her own by checking public records.

“The mayor said at the council meeting that I am looking into it along with the police department,” he said. “When we reach our conclusions, we’ll let the City Council know.”

At the meeting, Mayor Bob O’Dekirk asked Ventura to meet with Regis after she explained how she obtained the police officers’ addresses by comparing voter records, which contain addresses, with the list of names of police officers on the city’s website.

Two council members also running in the April 4 election – Brooke Hernandez Brewer and Jan Quillman – criti-

cized Ventura during the meeting, saying she endangered police officers by having a list of their addresses.

Ventura said she sent a mailing specifically to police officers because she was concerned that her views had been distorted by a police union representative. Both police unions have endorsed Brewer, Quillman and council member Michael Turk.

Ventura was accompanied by her two children and John Sheridan, president of the Cunningham Neighborhood Council, while she was being questioned

by Regis after the meeting in his office.

Sheridan, who regularly attends council meetings, rose to Ventura’s defense after she was accused of jeopardizing police officers and their families simply by having their addresses.

“I know where they live,” Sheridan told the council, pointing to a police department policy allowing officers to take home squad cars. “I run the streets, and I see their cars parked there. I don’t need a list.”

LOCAL BRIEFS Joliet approves revised lease for brewpub

JOLIET – The Joliet City Council this week approved lease changes to provide MyGrain Brewing Co. and Brewpub an additional $440,000 in rent credits for the project at Union Station.

The council approved the revised lease Tuesday for the brewpub, which its owners hope to open in July.

MyGrain will receive up to $840,000 in rent credit in compensation for renovations at Union Station, which is owned by the city. Rent at the station is $84,000 a month, meaning MyGrain could pay no rent for 10 years if it spends the full $840,000 on renovations.

The additional $440,000 in rent credits are intended primarily to cover the cost of a new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system that MyGrain will install.

The council also approved an outdoor beer garden for La Mex Restaurant at 3157 W. Jefferson St.

Rialto pays off old bills

JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre has paid off nearly all its bills thanks to injections of cash.

The theater had accumulated a backlog of bills that had topped $600,000 because of cash-flow problems dating back more than a year.

As of Thursday, outstanding bills were at $85,000, and most of that was in the form of a penalty that the theater intends to negotiate, Finance Director Dale Evans said.

Regular bills total $29,300, and all but $2,300 of that is less than 30 days old, Evans said.

Evans said the Rialto is dealing with a $56,000 penalty charged by MidAmerican Energy Co., an energy supplier that dropped the theater midcontract for not paying its bills.

Interim Executive Director Timothy Berry said at a Wednesday meeting of the Rialto board that the bills were paid thanks to a $600,000 loan from the Rialto Square Theatre Foundation and $250,000 in funding from the city of Joliet.

“Checks were cut. They’ve been mailed,” Berry said.

The Rialto will pay back the $600,000 loan at a rate of $50,000 a year, according to an agreement with the foundation.

The $250,000 from the city was the first installment of $500,000 in annual funding from Joliet. Another $250,000 will be provided at the end of June on the condition that the Rialto books 30 shows by that point.

Firefighters, police face off in culinary contest

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – With ONLY seconds to grab pantry ingredients, 15 minutes to brainstorm a recipe and one hour to cook, four men from the Joliet Police Department and four from the Joliet Fire Department went head to head in a culinary showdown.

On Tuesday, Turon Cummings, owner and head chef of Louis Joliet Mall restaurant ConEcepts, hosted the inaugural Culinary Showdown to raise money for EasterSeals Joliet.

“This was a way to create something new in Joliet, and we look to do events with other organizations as well,” Cummings said. “I also want people to understand our concept; we have real food made by real chefs.”

Two teams of two men from each department were asked to make a dish in 60 minutes, which would be tasted by a panel of judges. The winner took home $100, will have their dish on the menu at ConEcepts for a month and received a wooden plaque.

The event began about 5 p.m. and at 5:45 p.m., Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk spoke with the contestants and opened the competition.

the police said the fire department had an edge because, “between naps, all they do is cook,” officer Mike Steurer said.

That being said, before cook time, the fire department teams did offer detailed menu ideas, whereas the police teams seemed to wing it.

Cummings set up four stations, each with one burner, utensils, various pots and pans, and plating dishes. The teams had only a few seconds to rush to the pantry table and grab vegetables, pasta, spices, sauces, beans or rice before they cooked.

“We are pretty nervous. We are out of our realm,” firefighter Brian Hertzmann said. “We know what each other like, but don’t know what the judges will like.”

Team One was Hertzmann and Lt. James Boyd, who made a fajita in a bread cone, accompanied by a slaw and guacamole; Team Two was police officers Pat Schumacher and Steurer, who made sausage and pepper with rotini pasta and an herbed oil; Team Three was firefighters Chris Kinsella and Nate Kren with a Philly cheesesteak slider, potatoes and fire-glazed peppers; and Team Four was police Sgt. After 60 minutes was called, the teams presented their dishes in front of the panel of judges. At the table to taste were Louis Joliet Mall Operations Manager Dennis Strong, Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr., Milano Bakery Vice President Darin DeBenedetti, After the Peanut CEO Natalie Coleman and VET Holdings Vice President of Sales Sam Clinton.

“Taste is No. 1, and then how it looks, the aroma and presentation – those are the big things. People don’t come back

because their food was pretty, they come back because it tastes good,” Clinton said.

After a 20-minute taste round, the points from each judge were tallied, and Team One, Hertzmann and Boyd, took the first-place prize.

“Victory never tasted so good,” Boyd said.

Since the event was a fundraiser for EasterSeals, the team graciously donated the prize money to the organization.

Cummings said the dish will be on the menu for a month, and a portion of the proceeds from that dish also will go to EasterSeals Joliet.

Deb Strahanoski, development manager of the resource department at EasterSeals Joliet, said the funds from the event will help pay for summer programs for children who work with therapists during the school year.

Lincoln-Way D-210 candidates endorsed by mayors

fsarver@shawmedia.com Area mayors have endorsed three candidates for the Lincoln-Way School District 210 Board.

New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann said he’s endorsing incumbents Joseph Kirkeeng and Joseph Kosteck, along with Aaron Janik. The three are running together and have a political action committee called Candi- Joseph dates For Lincoln-Way Kirkeeng Excellence.

Those candidates also are being endorsed

by Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland, Mokena Mayor Frank Fleischer and Manhattan Mayor James Doyle.

Kirkeeng, Kosteck Joseph and Janik are three of Kosteck the 13 candidates competing for five seats on the Lincoln-Way board.

Baldermann said in the time Kirkeeng and Kosteck were appointed to the board last year they’ve done a “really Aaron Janik

good job.” Kirkeeng and Baldermann have both previously served on the New Lenox School District 122 board.

“They’ve done a really good job working with administration to right the ship,” he said.

Some of the positive changes Baldermann said he’s seen at the district include the hiring of a new business manager and some financial gains made since last year. He said he likes Janik’s approach to the school board and that he’s direct. Janik is board vice president for Mokena School District 159.

Doyle said he’s endorsing Kirkeeng, Kosteck and Janik because they’re looking to move the district forward.

“It’s a question of education for our kids. We get quality education for the kids. It’s a great school district. That hasn’t stopped,” Doyle said.

He said there are others in the community who want to close Central and West high schools and reopen North High School, which is closed this school year as part of the district’s plan to cut costs.

Doyle said he feels bad that North had to close but it will cost too much for the district to re-open it. The closing of the school already has led to students

being moved, and he didn’t feel they should be moved again, he said.

Holland said he’s endorsing the candidates because they have the knowledge and ability to enhance the educational experience for students and also be responsible for taxpayer money.

Calls to Fleischer were not immediately returned Wednesday.

Janik, along with board President Dee Molinare, board member Christopher Lucchetti and Beth Janus-Doyle, were recommended by the legislative body of the Lincoln-Way Education As-

sociation, the district’s teachers union.

The recommendation followed a forum attended by all 13 candidates.

Liz Sands, president of Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite, has stated her personal choices for the board include Robert Ripp, a former LWATU vice president; Janus-Doyle; Lucchetti; Janik and Cathy Pleasant, one of the five members of the Citizens For 210 slate.

LWATU formed in 2015 after the revelations of the district’s dire finances and sued the district in an unsuccessful lawsuit to block the closing of North.

JOLIET – Diversity is one of the recurring issues candidates running for the Joliet Township High School District 204 board plan to focus on if elected.

Candidates Mary “Meg” Cappel, Angel Contreras, Frank Edmon Jr. and board Vice President Tracy Spesia are running for three seats on the board.

Other issues important to the candidates include open communication between the community and district officials, helping students and families with resources and strengthening education at the district.

The district engaged in an audit of hiring practices and action plans to make staffing more diverse after receiving complaints last year from community members.

Spesia said the district’s new strategy, which was formed in strategic planning sessions, is one of the new initiatives at the district that is important to her. The strategy is focused on making the staff more diverse while also delivering a culturally responsive education to students.

Police: Joliet man kidnapped ex from Crest Hill apartment

CREST HILL – Police said a Joliet man kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and tied her up in his car Monday night.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m., Vincente R. Pedrosa, 36, went over to the 27-yearold woman’s residence in the 1300 block of Pioneer Vincente Road in Crest Hill and an R. Pedrosa argument ensued, Crest Hill Interim Police Chief Ed Clark said.

“There has been a history of domestic incidents,” Clark said.

Will County court records indicate the woman was granted an order of protection against Pedrosa earlier this month.

Pedrosa allegedly threatened the woman with what appeared to be a handgun,

OBITUARIES RONALD O. ERICKSON

Born: February 2, 1942; in Decatur, IL Died: March 15, 2017; in Elwood, IL Ronald O. Erickson, age 75, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Wednesday, March 15th, 2017, at his home in Elwood.

Ronald was born in Decatur, IL on February 2, 1942. He graduated from Joliet Township High School, joined and served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Ronald dedicated 31 years of his life to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during which time his responsibilities included field crew and repair work, diver and underwater welding, and ended his career as an assistant lock-master. Ronald was a member/trustee at Wilmington VFW Post #5422 during which time he volunteered his time for activities including multiple visits to the LaSalle and Manteno Veterans’ Nursing Homes. Ronald was a jack-of-all-trades and enjoyed woodworking, repairing any and everything, fishing, yard work, bird-watching, and spending time with family and friends.

Ronald was married to the love of his life, Linda L. Erickson (Hagan), on March 24, 1973, to whom he was a devoted husband for 43 years. ‘Gong Show’ creator Chuck Barris dies at 87

NEW YORK – Chuck Barris, whose game show empire included “The Dating Game,” “The Newlywed Game” and that infamous factory of cheese, “The Gong Show,” has died. He was 87.

Barris died of natural causes Tuesday afternoon at his home in Palisades, New York, said publicist Paul Shefrin, who announced the death on behalf of Barris’ family.

Barris made game show history right off the bat, in 1966, with “The Dating Game,” hosted by Jim Lange.

The gimmick: a young woman questions three men, hidden from her view, to determine which would be the best date. Sometimes the process was switched, with a man questioning three women. But in all cases, the questions were designed by the show’s writers to elicit sexy answers.

Celebrities and future celebrities who appeared as contestants included Michael Jackson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Martin and a pre-“Charlie’s Angels” Farrah Fawcett, introduced as “an accomplished artist and sculptress” with a dream to open her own gallery.

After the show became a hit on both daytime and nighttime TV, the Barris machine accelerated. New products included “The Newlywed Game,” “The Parent Game,” “The Family Game” and even “The Game Game.”

At one point Barris was supplying the TV networks with 27 hours of entertainment a week, mostly in fivedays-a-week daytime game shows.

The grinning, curly-haired Barris became a familiar face as creator and host of “The Gong Show,” which aired from 1976 to 1980.

Patterned after the Major Bowes Amateur Hour show that was a radio hit in the 1930s, the program featured performers who had peculiar talents and, often, no talent at all. When the latter appeared on the show, Barris would strike an oversize gong, the show’s equivalent of vaudeville’s hook. The victims would then be mercilessly berated by the manic Barris, with a hat often yanked down over his eyes and ears, and a crew of second-tier celebrities.

Occasionally, someone would actually launch a successful career through the show. One example was the late country musician BoxCar Willie, who was a 1977 “Gong Show” winner.

He called himself “The King of Daytime Television,” but to critics he was “The King of Schlock” or “The Baron

As “The Gong Show” and Barris’ other series were slipping, he sold his company for a reported $100 million in 1980 and decided to go into films.

He directed and starred in “The Gong Show Movie,” a thundering failure that stayed in theaters only a week. Afterward, a distraught Barris checked into a New York hotel and wrote his autobiography, “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,” in two months. In it, he claimed to have been a CIA assassin.

The book (and the 2002 film based on it, directed by George Clooney) were widely dismissed by disbelievers who said the creator of some of TV’s most lowbrow game shows had allowed his imagination to run wild when he claimed to have spent his spare time traveling the world, quietly rubbing out enemies of the U.S. “It sounds like he has been standing too close to the gong all those years,” quipped CIA spokesman Tom Crispell. “Chuck Barris has never been employed by the CIA, and the allegation that he was a hired assassin is absurd.”

Barris, who offered no corroboration of his claims, was unmoved.

“Have you ever heard the CIA acknowledge someone was an assassin?” he once asked.

Seeking escape from the Hollywood rat race, he moved to a villa in the south of France in the 1980s with his girlfriend and future second wife, Robin Altman, and made only infrequent returns to his old haunts in the next two decades.

Barris’ first marriage, to Lynn Levy, ended in divorce. Their daughter, Della, died of a drug overdose in 1998. He married his third wife, Mary, in 2000.

State gives layoff notices to 124 prison nurses; 17 at Stateville

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration has told 124 prison nurses that their jobs are being privatized, a move their union blasted as retaliation for its rejection of a contract offer last year.

The nurses include 17 at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill.

Nurses stationed at 12 state prisons will be dismissed June 15, two days after the contract nurses are hired, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press that the prison system’s labor chief sent this week to the Illinois Nurses Association.

Alice Johnson, the association’s executive director, noted the notice came days after the union filed an unfair labor practices complaint with state regulators, claiming the first-term Republican governor has reneged on his obligation to negotiate contract terms in good faith. She said members overwhelmingly rejected a tentative agreement last spring and Rauner is retaliating.

“It’s an attempt to bully and intimidate the nurses, and it’s not going to work,” Johnson said.

She said the move is particularly troublesome because of a nationwide shortage of nurses that forces Illinois prison nurses to sometimes work 80hour weeks while vacant positions go unfilled.

Lawsuit: Chicago violates law by destroying 911 tapes

CHICAGO – A group of Chicago civil rights lawyers has filed a lawsuit alleging that the city’s policy of destroying 911 recordings after 30 days violates state law.

The Chicago Civil Rights Project filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court, arguing that the city illegally deleted the recordings “for administrative convenience,” unless there was a notice to preserve specific recordings.

The suit said the practice makes it difficult to obtain evidence because 30 days often isn’t enough time for attorneys to know whether such records are relevant.

“A lot of us are very upset about that,” Hofbauer said. “Some of the nurses I work with are very close to retirement.”

Rauner, a private equity investor serving in public office for the first time, campaigned on cutting off union power in a solidly Democratic state and has clashed repeatedly with organized labor. He is engaged in a long court and public relations

Solar panels at Waukegan schools generating energy

WAUKEGAN – Solar panels installed at seven Waukegan public schools are now generating power.

The Chicago Tribune reported that nearly 2,200 rooftop panels are up and running this week. Final touches are being made on monitors for each school’s lobby showing how energy is generated.

The panels can generate up to 681 kilowatts of energy – enough energy to power 540 homes.

Rauner disapproval rating soars You may have heard about a recent Paul Simon Public Policy Institute poll which found that Gov. Bruce Rauner’s job disapproval ratings have almost doubled in the past two years, from 31 percent in March of 2015 to 58 percent this month.

According to the poll, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan’s current disapproval rating is 61 percent, about the same as his 63 percent disapproval rating last October. Rauner’s disapproval rating last October was 55 percent.

During this long governmental impasse, Speaker Madigan has championed the cause of unions and working people against the governor’s attempts to take rights and benefits away from them. But the Democrat actually is underwater with union members.

According to the Simon poll, 55 percent of respondents who said they belong to a union disapprove of Madigan’s job performance, including 38 percent who strongly disapprove. Just 34 percent of union members approve of his job performance, while only 12 percent strongly approve. All this pain and they still don’t like him.

But union members dislike the governor far more. The poll found that 72 percent of union members disapprove of Rauner’s job performance, and half of union members strongly disapprove. Only 24 percent approve. On Rauner, anyway, the union message has gotten out.

At the very beginning of this impasse almost two years ago, a top Madigan operative told me the plan was to drag Rauner down to the same polling levels as the House Speaker. They’re very nearly there.

Gov. Rauner is polling horribly everywhere. 58 percent of suburbanites and 56 percent of Downstaters disapprove of his job performance. Another 62 percent of moderates, 60 percent of independents, 47 percent of born-again Christians, 55 percent of men, 61 percent of women, 56 percent of seniors (66+), 54 percent of whites, 56 percent of those making over $100,000 a year and 55 percent of non-union members all disapprove of his job performance.

The same day JB Pritzker announced he was forming an exploratory committee to run for governor, the Illinois Republican Party made a wildly unsubstantiated claim that the Democrat was “at the center of Blagojevich’s criminal scheme to sell Illinois’ Senate seat.” Like it or not, this is our future.

Barring a dramatic turnaround in his approval ratings, Gov. Rauner’s only sure path to reelection is to make his opponent look even uglier than he does – and he looks pretty darned ugly right now. But he’s also got a very expensive ugly stick

He’s already deposited $50 million into his campaign bank account and there’s plenty more cash where that came from.

So, 2018 will not only likely be the most expensive gubernatorial race in history, it’ll be the meanest, because now that the governor has opened the door to these sorts of crazy attacks, the other side will undoubtedly respond in-kind.

Rauner has spent tens of millions of dollars muddying up Speaker Madigan’s image and he’ll definitely use this “issue” against whoever his opponent will be.

Campaigns usually are referendums on the incumbent, so Rauner will attempt to make Madigan and whoever his alleged puppet gubernatorial candidate is the incumbents while positioning himself as the outsider trying to change things for the better.

For the past two years, the whole plan has been to equate “Democrat” with “Madigan” in voters’ minds. And it’s had some success.

“When is a Democrat going to run a campaign for that 61 percent?” A Democratic operative asked me last week, referring to the obvious opportunity to capitalize on Madigan’s 61 percent disapproval rating. To the operative, this is a no-brainer.

Run a campaign that criticizes both Rauner and Madigan. After all, even more Democrats disapprove of Madigan’s job performance (47 percent) than approve (40 percent), while 27 percent of Democrats strongly disapprove and only a tiny 9 percent strongly approve.

So far, announced Democratic candidate Chris Kennedy has seemed to go out of his way to avoid directly criticizing Madigan. Even Ameya Pawar, the progressive Democratic candidate, hasn’t really launched on the guy. Pritzker hasn’t granted any serious interviews and hasn’t issued any substantive policy statements, so we don’t know yet where he’ll stand.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party has not done much of anything to equate “Republican” with “Rauner” in voters’ minds. Rauner’s numbers were almost as bad last October as they are now, but the Democrats barely mentioned him in their campaigns. It’s probably time to start thinking about that.

AFSCME is a fake union, not helping locals

To the Editor: I was a “member” of an AFSCME union for 25 years.

During this time, I never saw a national union rep help a local member.

The best outcome you could hope for was to have a grievance dropped.

The only other option was to be thrown to the wolves.

We had two different reps in my 25 years. The first one finally retired to pursue his real vacation, bar stool wrangler at his local VFW. The second had two catchphrases.

“We don’t want to ruffle any feathers,” and “We don’t want to open that can of worms.”

Small locals are nothing more than a source of good money, so the national can pursue its main agenda, protecting the cushy jobs of administrators and directors.

Any other achievements are simply a byproduct of their self-serving agenda.

A popular term used today is “fake news.”

AFSCME is a “fake union!” RIP John Lewis.

Today’s unions are like mobsters who extort payment for protection they don’t provide.

JCA baseball team may need full season to get where it wants to be

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Catholic Academy baseball team went 1-3 in the first Prep Baseball Report Kickoff Classic last weekend at Sauget and Edwardsville.

The Hilltoppers then opened their home season Tuesday with a 4-2 loss to Oak Park-River Forest.

A 1-4 record is not the sort of start the JCA program is accustomed to having under 19-year coach Jared Voss, who entered this season with a 461-196 career record. Then again, the season is young.

“We played four games down south and our 1-3 record there was a little bit expected,” Voss said. “We won 20 games last year [finishing 20-14, including 14-4 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference], and in Drake Fellows, George Manikas and Jared Jones, 18 of our 20 wins graduated.”

In the PBR Classic, the Hilltoppers lost to Chatham Glenwood, 1-0, in walkoff fashion in the bottom of the seventh inning. They also lost to Normal West, 7-2, and Edwardsville, 6-2.

The victory was an 11-1, five-inning rout of O’Fallon.

“All our opponents there were ranked in the preseason,” Voss said.

“Chatham threw a kid that’s going to Coastal Carolina against us. We are young, but the kids we have are good enough baseball players and athletes that they will get there.”

Senior Jack Surin, the Hilltoppers’ shortstop last season, is the No. 1 catcher this season. That’s a position he has played often in his baseball career.

“We’re hoping to settle on Jack Surin behind the plate,” Voss said. “But we also have Jack Naal, who is a good catcher, and Simon Grashoff, who is a good junior catcher. So we’re in good shape there. We feel we are three deep.”

Shaw Media correspondent ROMEOVILLE – The roster is bigger. The expectations are growing.

After some tough seasons, Romeoville’s baseball team may be on the way up.

New coach Mike Skroch is aiming for that.

“The plan is to get our boys to work together and embrace the team philosophy,” Skroch said. “It’s a learning experience for both the players and the coaching staff.”

Skroch takes over for Dave Haskins, who stitched together a 49-123 record in five years, including a 6-24 record – 2-19 in the Southwest Prairie Conference – last spring. While he developed some Division I players, including infielder Matt Bottcher, now at Illinois-Chicago, the hope that Haskins could duplicate his success at Prairie Ridge, which won the 2008 Class 4A title, never panned out. Skroch was on Haskins’ staff, and now it’s his turn.

“We’re not really starting over,” Skroch said. “We definitely want to build it. We want to show the boys at Romeoville that if you come out, you’re going to get equal opportunity

“More than anything for our young guys, it’s just a matter of getting adjusted to the speed of the varsity game.”

The JCA outfield will include sophomore center fielder Greg Ziegler, who saw some varsity time as a freshman. Junior Matt Bebar, Tyrell, senior Sam Seneker and sophomore Nick Iannantone are in the outfield mix as well. Iannantone also figures to be one of the designated hitters.

Tyrell’s primary value will be on the mound, however. The left-hander is the No. 1 starting pitcher.

“Part of what we are trying to figure out right now is our pitching,” Voss said. “It starts with Aidan Tyrell, who is committed to Notre Dame. Over the summer we had him in the mid-80s.

“He is a three-sport guy, which is a testament to his competitiveness. He’ll probably be our quarterback in the fall, and he’s a guard in basketball. He’s going to stick with all three sports, for sure.”

Others in the mix are senior right-hander Brendon Wills, who also played basketball, along

The Spartans are heavy on juniors, with 16 third-year players on the 22man roster. The numbers alone are a plus. Just two years ago, Haskins went into the season with 15 players to pick from.

The larger roster was to Skroch’s benefit in Saturday’s opener with Stagg. While the Spartans dropped

a 10-5 decision, he was able to get 15 players into the contest.

“We have youth but we also have kids with varsity experience,” Skroch said. “We’re competitive at positions.

That’s something we kind of haven’t had for a while at Romeoville. It breeds more competitiveness.”

Conversely, Haskins’ small rosters meant many of the now-juniors have varsity experience. Tyler Horvath and Zach Swearingen, for instance, were up all last season as sophomores. Both will be on the mound, and in the outfield in Horvath’s case, or the infield in Swearingen’s case, when they’re not pitching.

Then there’s Ethan Green, who was going to be a varsity stalwart as a sophomore but sat out with a labrum injury. Saturday, in his debut as a junior, he drove in a pair of runs.

“They have experience, which absolutely counts, but it’ll be nice to have them for another couple of years,” Skroch said. “But we had some wide eyes on Saturday. The new players now see the speed and the intensity, and I think we’re going to just move up from here.

“We do have some depth.”

He pointed to the argument for

third base between Green and fellow juniors Jeremy McFarland and Michael McGuire – the latter two also pitch – as one example of that.

“All three are performing well in the game simulations that we do, so they’ll all get a shot,” Skroch said.

“And we have a battle in the outfield for the fourth and fifth spot.”

Jeff Zack, a right-handed pitcher/ first baseman who verbally committed to New Mexico State, is the first player Skroch mentioned when asked about his best players.

“He throws a very heavy ball,” Skroch said. “I expect him to hopefully step up into No. 1 in our rotation.”

If not, Horvath, a lefty, should be right there to challenge him. Skroch said he has D-I potential.

With the departure of Bottcher, Swearingen moves to shortstop from second and third, which he played last season, and moves up in the batting order.

Skroch also expects senior center fielder Zakk Suits to excel at getting on base and generally frustrating the opposition.

“If his uniform is clean after a game, it’s amazing,” Skroch said. “He can swing it.”

Esparza, who has signed with Lindenwood University in Missouri, is expected to be the ace in the circle for the Knights. She said the transition to Central has been smooth.

“I didn’t come in with a negative attitude,” she said. “I accepted it and said, ‘It is what it is.’ As a whole, we’ve embraced it, and we’ve realized it’s time to come together as a team.

We’re Knights now. It’s been good so far.”

Esparza is looking forward to being teammates with girls she’s competed against in the past.

“It’s a unique experience that most people don’t get, and we’re excited,” she said. “We all get along.”

Esparza also can play across the infield for the Knights.

“I know Marina from playing against her a little bit,” Tarala said.

“I talked to [Lincoln-Way East coach Elizabeth Pawlicki], and she raved about Marina and all the girls coming over from East. Everything she raved about is true. Having Marina is a luxury that most coaches don’t get.”

Weyh and Platek also can step into the circle for the Knights, as well as play both the infield and outfield.

“We have great depth with our pitching,” Tarala said. “That’s huge.”

Tarala said she has been impressed with the former East players’ ability to adapt.

“You’ve got girls that are used to doing things certain ways, but they’ve been really receptive,” he said. “I think the transition has gone just fine, and that’s all due to them. The senior leadership is important.”

Barrett, an Augustana recruit, is one of the key returnees from a Cen-

tral team that went 15-12 last year.

She will be counted on to spark the Knights’ offense.

“I want to lead by example,” she said. “Both with my hitting and in the field. I want to set the tone for our team.”

Junior infielder Kamryn Murphy and sophomore Lillian Vellenga also are expected to play big roles for the Knights. Vellenga is a catcher but also can play infield positions and in the outfield.

Esparza said she feels Central is a team without an obvious weakness.

“I don’t want to be cocky, but I think we have it all,” she said. “As long as we keep working together, I think we can have a great year. Without a doubt, I think we can make it to state.”

That’s the ultimate goal for Tarala, as well.

“We want to win our conference, win a regional, get to that sectional championship game and see what happens,” he said.

“We want to uphold that same standard of excellence that they had at East. They were playing in a supersectional last year. We want to take it one step further and get to state.”

Lewis’ Kelliher earns Honorable Mention All-American honors SUBMITTED REPORTS

ROMEOVILLE – The Division II Conference Commissioners Association announced on Monday that Lewis University sophomore forward Jessica Kelliher was selected as a D2CCA Women’s Basketball Honorable Mention All-American.

This is the third consecutive season that Lewis has had a D2CCA All-America selection. Kelliher joins former teammates Mariyah Brawner-Henley (2015, 2016) and Jamie Johnson (2015) as D2CCA All-Americans. Of the 25 All-America selections, Kelliher is one of two sophomores that were honored.

Kelliher, the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year, was a D2CCA All-Midwest Region SecondTeam selection as a freshman. A fourtime GLVC Player of the Week, Kelliher led the conference in both scoring (19.7 point a game) and scored in double figures in 31 of 32 games, including 15 games of 20 or more points and three games of 30 or more points.

The sophomore forward set a school record with 18 baskets on 18for-19 shooting to finish with 38 points against Maryville (Jan. 14). She also set

a school record with a field-goal percentage of 65.2 percent (258 for 396), which also was the best in NCAA D-II. Kelliher has the best career field-goal percentage (62.8) of any active D-II player and the second-highest career scoring average (19.0).

COLLEGE BASEBALL USF’s Darling, Smith recognized: A

two-game sweep of Roosevelt University led to a sweep of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball awards for the Saints for the week ending March 19. USF junior shortstop Tom Smith (Lockport) was named the CCAC Player of the Week, while senior right-hander Dan Darling (Coal City) was recognized as the league’s Pitcher of the Week.

Smith went 3 for 4 in each end of Sunday’s nonconference doubleheader to finish with a .750 batting average for the week. He also scored three runs and drove in another two. Two of his six hits went for extra bases, leading to a 1.125 slugging percentage.

Darling pitched in each end of the twinbill, notching his seventh save of the season in the 3-1 opener with 2/3 of an inning of scoreless relief. He added

another inning of work without allowing a run or a hit in the 8-3 Game 2 win.

Butler 7, Lewis 3: The Flyers (4-13) had a 2-0 lead going into the sixth, but host Butler scored six runs to pick up the nonconference win. Junior center fielder Jermaine Terry (Plainfield South) hit a two-run homer. Brandon Popp (0-2) took the loss.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL Lewis’ Coenen honored: Flyers red-

shirt freshman outside hitter Ryan Coenen was selected as the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending March 19. Coenen averaged 1.5 blocks and 1.13 digs a set last week, as the Flyers swept McKendree and dropped a narrow five-set match to No. 2 Ohio State.

His most impressive performance came against the Buckeyes, as he notched a team-best eight blocks and five digs. He was the linchpin for the Flyer defense against Ohio State, as it hit below .300 for the first time this season. Coenen also was impressive offensively against OSU, as he recorded a match-high 22 kills, while hitting .500 with four service aces.

With a solid core of returning players from last year’s team, plus an influx of talent moving over from Lincoln-Way East, Tarala’s expectations are high.

“This is the most athletic team I’ve ever seen us have,” Tarala said. “We have girls that are versatile, that can play all over the field, and that are talented. If we work hard and keep a positive attitude, the sky’s the limit for us.”

The Knights will feature several newcomers coming from East because of the district’s boundary shifting after the closing of Lincoln-Way North.

A trio of pitchers – senior Marina Esparza and sophomores Amanda Weyh and Ashley Platek – are among the transfers who bring a track record of success from East. The three were part of the Griffins’ team that won a sectional championship a year ago.

Lester: Best in (free agent) class after 2 years?

MESA, Ariz. – Two years into a sixyear, nine-figure contract, the Cubs already have gotten their money’s worth out of Jon Lester.

All $155 million worth the past two years alone?

Believe it. If he took the next four years off, it still might make him the best value from a free agent class two winters ago that included 2016 National League Cy Award winner Max Scherzer.

The Cubs won’t go that far. And Lester certainly doesn’t believe it.

But the Cubs went from 73 wins and vision before Lester’s signing to 200 wins the past two regular seasons and winning five of six postseason series – including the season Cub fans have waited 108 years to see and that the business department might spend almost as much time cashing in on.

Lester was one of many players who affected that organizational breakthrough the past two seasons.

Just imagine if he does anything close this year to what he did last year – 19-5, 2.44 ERA, runner-up finish to Scherzer in the Cy Young voting and a 3-1, 2.02 ERA surge through the postseason over five starts and a Game 7 World Series relief appearance.

Never mind anything he might con-

tribute on the backside of the contract if he stays healthy.

“You’ve kind of accomplished – no, not kind of – we accomplished what I came here to do,” Lester, 33, said after an 86-pitch effort in a six-inning start on the minor league side of camp Wednesday (efficient enough that outs were added to some innings so he could get his prescribed work).

“That was the main reason why Theo wanted me to get here, and I want-

ed to come here,” added Lester, who has one more spring start before pitching the season opener April 2 in St. Louis.

“Now the hard part is that you don’t get complacent. That’s where you still have to do your work and still put your time and all that other stuff to be ready to pitch.”

The work ethic and now-do-it-again attitude was part of what the Boston expatriates in the Cubs’ front office knew they were buying when they signed the player they drafted for the Red Sox in 2002.

“When we signed Jon to a six-year deal, certainly we were excited about all six years on the deal,” general manager Jed Hoyer said. “But already sitting here after Year 2, he’s been exactly what we wanted. We wanted a guy that had the makeup to pitch in huge games, and he did that.”

That included awards for the National League Championship Series co-MVP and the New York baseball writers’ award for overall postseason MVP. Consider that in two postseasons with the Cubs, Lester has pitched 492/3 innings over nine starts and the relief appearance, with a 2.17 ERA. Scherzer? He made two first-round playoff starts last year without a win.

GONZALEZ HIT HARD, NOT PLEASED Although he finished with 21/3 scoreless innings Wednesday, right-hander Miguel Gonzalez didn’t brush off his start (41/3, nine hits, four runs) as just getting his spring work in.

“I’m not a power pitcher,” Gonzalez said.

“I’ve got to throw strikes and minimize damage. That didn’t happen the first two innings.”

Gonzalez, who pitched for Mexico in the WBC, said he felt good in the bullpen, but his split-finger pitch failed him in the game, he said. It was a contrast to James Shields the night before, who said he felt lost in the bullpen before throwing six scoreless innings.

After Gonzalez, relievers Cory Luebke, Jake Petricka, Zach Putnam and Aaron Bummer did not allow an earned run.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Basketball is not a big deal in Leury Garcia’s native country, so let’s cut him some slack for not knowing who Larry Bird is.

But he should know. When Garcia, who has been up and down with the Sox from Triple-A Charlotte since 2013, first joined the Sox in 2013, coach Joe McEwing playfully began calling him “Larry Legend,” after the NBA great.

“Larry Legend, yeah,” Garcia said Wednesday, smiling. “As soon as I got here, he gave me that nickname. I don’t know where that comes from but ...”

In the course of the conversation about Bird, teammate Todd Frazier, passing by, provided helpful hand signals to Garcia, who is from the Dominican Republic.

“Number 33?” Garcia asked.

Bingo.

“Thanks, Fraz,” Garcia said.

“Legend” might be a stretch for one who is fighting for a spot on the Opening Day roster. But Garcia is versatile, therefore valuable, and appears to stand a good chance. The only posi-

tions he hasn’t played in the majors are first base and catcher. He even pitched a couple of games in a pinch.

“It has helped me a lot,” Garcia said.

“They can put me in the lineup wherever they need me to play.”

Garcia is having a good spring, 15 for 45 (.333) with four doubles, two walks and two stolen bases in two attempts. A switch-hitter, he can play center field and all over the infield. Manager Rick Renteria said he is comLeury Garcia fortable playing Garcia anywhere he has played.

“Leury has shown pretty solid defensive prowess at all of them and kind of transitions very easily,” Renteria said.

Burdi sticks around: The Sox aren’t rushing their top prospects to the major leagues, including Zack Burdi, although the hard-throwing 2016 firstround draft pick survived the roster cuts that included pitchers Reynaldo Lopez, Lucas Giolito, Carson Fulmer and Michael Kopech.

ham to Triple-A Charlotte in one season after being selected in the first round (26th overall) in the 2016 draft.

“It’s a little different with a reliever,” general manager Rick Hahn said.

“You’re asking a little bit less of him.

We’re able to get him consistent work here while at the same time getting our own major league starters ready. So there’s still an opportunity for Zack to perform, and he’s benefiting from being in this environment while working with [pitching coach Don Cooper], so he’ll stick around for a little while longer.”

“I’m not too worried about where I start off or end up,” Burdi said. “It’s a process. You have to just keep growing day by day and not let all the outside noise affect you. It’s easy to let that happen when there is so much hype around the young group here. All the guys have done a good job blocking it out and going about their business.”

Burdi will make his 10th appearance Thursday against the Reds. He has pitched well, with three earned runs allowed on four hits over 10 innings (2.70 ERA) with 12 strikeouts and four walks.

CHICAGO – Nikola Mirotic scored a season-high 28 points, and the Bulls beat the Detroit Pistons, 117-95, in a matchup between struggling teams fighting for a playoff spot on Wednesday night.

Mirotic shot 12 of 15 and made 4 of 6 3-point attempts to lead the Bulls to an easy win after dropping eight of 10.

Jimmy Butler added 16 points and 12 assists.

Joffrey Lauvergne filled in for suspended center Robin Lopez and outplayed Andre Drummond with 17 points and seven rebounds. Rookie Paul Zipser added a career-high 15 points as the Bulls moved into a ninth-place tie with Detroit in the Eastern Conference.

The Bulls honored late general manager Jerry Krause with a moment of silence before the game. A Chicago native who oversaw a dynasty that produced two championship three-peats in the 1990s, he died at age 77 on Tuesday.

The Bulls saw a 13-point lead shrink to two with about a minute left in the second quarter.

But layups by Lauvergne and Mirotic sent the Bulls to the locker room with a six-point lead.

They also started a 19-2 run that made it 74-55 in the third, essentially putting away this game.

Kansas, Purdue plan to make for a stylish Sweet 16 matchup

The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Two national player of the year front-runners, Frank Mason III of Kansas and Caleb Swanigan of Purdue, will lead their teams against each other in the Midwest Regional semifinals Thursday night.

In many ways, they’re a microcosm of their teams.

Mason is the granite-tough point guard whose ability to get up and down the floor in a blink has caused nightmares for the rest of the Big 12 the past four years. Swanigan is a 6-foot-9, 250-pound bruiser whose ability to dominate the post helped the Boilermakers dominate the Big Ten. The Jayhawks are the essence of speed and shooting, Purdue the epitome of size and strength.

“There is no doubt they’re going to attack us with that matchup,” Boilermakers coach Matt Painter said Wednesday, “and there is no doubt we’re going to attack their matchup at the other end. And both teams are going to try to prevent that.”

With clashing styles, the No. 1 seed Jayhawks and fifth-seeded Boilermakers promise to deliver a slobber-knock-

er when they meet at the sold-out Sprint Center, a short drive down Interstate 70 from the Kansas campus in Lawrence.

In the other Midwest semifinal, third-seeded Oregon and sensational forward Dillon Brooks will try to end seventh-seeded Michigan’s dream postseason by earning a spot in the Elite Eight.

The Jayhawks (30-4) hardly have been tested after their stunning Big 12 quarterfinal loss to TCU, a game in which top freshman Josh Jackson was suspended for off-the-court incidents.

They’ve blown out UC Davis and beat Michigan State by 20 to cruise into Kansas City on a hot streak.

“What makes them effective is they’re not just fast and skilled,” Swanigan said. “They can shoot a high percentage from [the 3-point line] and have guys that can make plays. They’ve got playmakers at four positions, so that’s what makes them hard to guard in transition.”

Purdue (27-7), which lost to the Wolverines in overtime in the Big Ten tournament, dropped Vermont in the NCAA tournament’s opening round before holding off Iowa State’s frantic comeback bid.

“The thing that makes us worried is

that we’re not as big of a team as they are,” said Jackson, who along with Mason, Devonte Graham and Svi Mykhailiuk give Kansas coach Bill Self a rare four-guard lineup. “We’ve got work to do to make sure we’re ready.”

Meanwhile, the Ducks (31-5) blew out Iona before rallying to beat Rhode Island in the tournament’s opening weekend, while the Wolverines (2611) followed four wins in four days at the Big Ten tourney with nip-and-tuck wins over Oklahoma State and Louisville by a combined four points.

Oh, and the Michigan plane skidded off the runway before the postseason even began, a terrifying incident that has seemingly galvanized the Wolverines during their March run.

“I try to keep my email and texts all answered,” Michigan coach John Beilein said, “but it’s not unlikely to see 100 texts on your phone, or emails. They’re coming in dozens all the time.

“Over the years, you meet a lot of people, and the people can sort of identify with this team and appreciate what these young men have done. It’s great,” he added. “And at some point I’ll answer ’em all, but it’s not going to be until somebody tells me you can’t play anymore.”

THE TEAM THAT BEAT THE TEAM

Purdue insists there is no extra benefit to having beaten the Cyclones last weekend, considering Iowa State snapped the Jayhawks’ 54-game home win streak this season. It sure caught the Jayhawks’ attention, however.

“A little bit,” senior forward Landen Lucas conceded, “but we don’t look too much into it. We feel like if we go out there and play our game, we can match up with anybody.”

DEFENDING THE BIG TEN

Michigan and Purdue represent three of the Big Ten teams still playing in the Sweet 16 – Wisconsin is alive in the East Regional semifinal. And that’s been sweet vindication for a conference that many put down early in the year.

Joliet man shares story of recovery

JOLIET – Bill Pucel wants people to know Celebrate Recovery is not another 12-step program, and it’s not only for alcoholics.

The Christ-centered recovery group helped Pucel beat his drinking problems when other methods failed.

When Pucel put down the bottle, he also picked up the Bible.

“It brought me to church and to have a relationship with Christ,” said Pucel, 55, of Joliet. “I wanted Christ in my recovery.”

Pucel sees Celebrate Recovery as a partnership between God and the person seeking help. Each has a role to play.

“You’ve got to do everything you can do,” Pucel said, “and God will do everything you can’t do.”

Today, Pucel attends the Celebrate Recovery group at Judson Memorial Baptist Church in Joliet and shares his story with anyone who will listen. Several times a year, he also shares it with residents at MorningStar Mission in Joliet.

The Rev. Gregory Thompson, a minster, preacher and teacher at The Way Church of Joliet – formerly called The Church at Joliet – said he met Pucel at the Bolingbrook church Pucel formerly attended.

Thompson said Pucel occasionally speaks about his recovery at The Way Church of Joliet’s service it holds at MorningStar Mission on the fourth Sunday of each month.

He called Pucel “a man of faith” and one of “God’s trophies,” living proof it’s possible to stand tall after falling far.

“Even though he’s years into this [recovery] lifestyle, he still has exuberance and enthusiasm,” Thompson said. “He’s a very kindhearted, humble guy, not flashy, just down-toearth and excited about what God is doing in his life.”

Thompson said Celebrate Recovery did more for Pucel than “deliver him from alcoholism.”

“He also learned a different way to worship God and a different way to study the Bible, to open it up and study it for himself,” Thompson said.

“If the story saves or helps one person better their lives or get rid of their addiction, the story is so much worth it,” Pucel said.

Getting there

Make no mistake. Pucel was no casual drinker.

“I was so dependent on alcohol, I had to drink it many times a day to feel normal,” Pucel said. “It wasn’t to get drunk. It was to get to how I feel now.”

By the time he found Celebrate Recovery, he was drinking half a gallon of vodka a day. And he was employed.

“I didn’t have my license back then, so I took cabs and buses,” Pucel said. “I used to bring my vodka to the bus to take the edge off. I used to drink out of a water bottle of straight vodka.”

Eventually, Pucel’s employer learned he was drinking on the job.

Pucel recalled that day, sitting in his boss’ office next to an empty chair.

“He had to fire me,” Pucel said.

“And I walked out of there and talked to my cousin, a minister at Celebrate Recovery.”

Pucel said he started attending a Celebrate Recovery group at a Bolingbrook church. The group’s facilitator had been a recovering alcoholic for 26 years.

Pucel said he had attended Alcoholics Anonymous in the past after receiving DUIs. But this group was different.

“When I walked in, I felt no judgment, and it felt warm and welcoming,” Pucel said. “My face was beet red and puffy from alcohol. I only drank once after that and haven’t drank since.”

Turns out, not drinking was easy for Pucel.

“Once I accepted Christ, he took my desire and withdrawals away from me, which is miraculous and physically impossible,” Pucel said.

Pucel, who now works two jobs – one at a grocery store and one at a gas station – said Celebrate Recovery addresses addictions other than alcohol, including gambling.

Or, as Rick Warren, founder of Saddleback Church in California, says on the Celebrate Recovery website, Celebrate Recovery “addresses all types of habits, hurts and hangups.”

“It’s for anything that’s holding you back from being the person God wants you to be,” Pucel said. “Low self-esteem, abuse, gambling addiction, drug addictions, co-dependency – anything like that.”

Alzheimer’s patients often get pneumonia

and are unable to care for themselves.

Patients with advanced-stage Alzheimer’s need 24-hour supervision and help with personal hygiene, dressing and eating.

Changes in brain function make it increasingly difficult for them to move about, sit up and even swallow. This leads to complications such as bedsores, skin infections, blood clots and sepsis. Injuries from falls are common. Difficulty in swallowing makes eating and drinking an ongoing challenge, and can lead to weight loss, malnutrition and dehydration.

The most common cause of death among Alzheimer’s patients is aspiration pneumonia. This happens when, due to difficulty in swallowing caused by the disease, an individual inadvertently inhales food particles, liquid or even gastric fluids. Because our mouths and throats contain numerous bacteria, these are carried deep into the lungs.

There they multiply and grow, which leads to pneumonia. Due to the impaired immune systems of Alzheimer’s patients, pneumonia is often fatal.

It’s important to remember that Alzheimer’s patients often are elderly and thus may have a range of medical conditions associated with advancing age. These include stroke, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and hypertension, any of which can cause death, whether or not Alzheimer’s is present.

Dear Doctor: I understand that Alzheimer’s disease causes memory loss and leads to dementia. But when someone has Alzheimer’s, what is the actual cause of death?

Dear Reader: Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease of the brain in which dementia is the most noticeable of numerous symptoms. Changes within the tissues of the brain slowly destroy vital connections between different regions of the brain, and between the brain and the body.

The result is that Alzheimer’s disease is the fifth-leading cause of death among adults 65 years and older, and is the sixth-leading cause of death for all adults nationwide.

The disease first was identified in 1906

by Dr. Alois Alzheimer, who connected a patient’s dementia to certain physical abnormalities he found when he examined her brain after her death. But the human brain is so intricate and Alzheimer’s itself is so complex that more than a century later, scientists still are working to discover both the cause of, and a cure for, the disease.

Although each case of Alzheimer’s is different, researchers have identified three general stages of the disease. In the first stage, symptoms of cognitive impairment, such as memory loss or confusion, have either not yet appeared or are quite mild.

However, significant changes are taking place within the brain, including nerve death, tissue loss and the buildup of abnormal clumps and tangles of protein.

These changes lead to the second stage of the disease, during which symptoms become more pronounced. Patients begin to experience significant memory loss, confusion, impaired reasoning, poor spatial skills and a loss of language. By the final stage of Alzheimer’s, the brain has shrunk dramatically. Patients no longer can communicate, are unable to recognize faces, even of family members and loved ones,

Dear Abby: We recently lost one of our cherished pets, our oldest cat, Mandy. We never had children, so our pets ARE our children. I get that people who have never had pets don’t understand the joy and unconditional love they can bring. A couple of days later, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to put her to sleep. My question is, am I expecting too much of people? After all, you wouldn’t ignore the death of a human child. I’m not only disappointed but resentful that these so-called friends and family don’t seem to care. I suppose to some Mandy was “just a cat.” But to us, she was our beloved furry child, and we are devastated.
