bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The City Council on Tuesday will vote on changes in a future brewpub’s lease at Union Station to cover up to $440,000 in additional costs for the project.

MyGrain Brewing Company and Brewpub is trying to open this summer but is running into additional costs renovating an inside section of the station for the business.

The lease changes will account for a $400,000 heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system with some extra cushion for unforeseen costs.

The entrepreneurs are getting rent credits, which amount to essentially free rent in compensation for their costs in renovating the space. According to the changes in the lease, MyGrain would pay no rent for 10 years if it spends the full $840,000 in available rent credits on renovations.

City Manager Jim Hock jested that sometimes it seems that every other one of

The city owns Union Station. Rent credits are aimed at compensating MyGrain for costs the city as landlord would have had to pay if it did renovations itself.

Allowing MyGrain to install the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system is seen as a way of saving time on the project rather than going through the usual public bidding process required for expenditure of governments funds.

La Mex beer garden

The council also will vote Tuesday on a license allowing the La Mex Restaurant at 3157 W. Jefferson St. to have an outdoor beer garden until midnight.

Deputy Liquor Commissioner Richard Goepper said La Mex would be barred from having outdoor entertainment or amplified electronic music in the beer garden.

Certified Warehouse Foods closing its two stores

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Certified Warehouse Foods, an independent supermarket with two stores on the East Side since the 1980s, is closing.

Owner Ken Clymer said Monday that he will close both the Jackson Street and Richards Street stores once inventory is sold.

Clymer said he has kept the stores open despite losing money for several years but could do it no longer.

He said the business, which opened in 1981 with a store on Cass Street, had a “good run” because of the customers who supported it over the years.

“I’m very gratified for their past support,” Clymer said. “I tried my best, but I can’t do it anymore. I love the people on this side of town. They’ve been fantastic to me. But what else can I do?”

City officials, however, look forward to the brewpub, hoping it will be part of a rebirth of activity at Union Station, which opened in 1912 but ceased to be used as a train station in September 2014.

“Thank you guys for sticking with it,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said to the MyGrain business partners at the meeting. “It’s an old, old building that has a lot of problems.”

MyGrain partner Grzegorz Lesiak told the council that he still is aiming at a July opening and said the city has been very helpful.

“There’s still a lot to do,” Lesiak said. “It all depends on you. If we have the support, we’re still looking at July.”

But Clymer said the grocery business has become increasingly competitive to the point that he no longer is competing just with other supermarkets.

“Everybody’s selling groceries. You go to Menards, and they sell groceries,” he said. “They have dollar stores all over the East Side, and they sell groceries. Everybody’s getting into the grocery business.

We kept getting squeezed and squeezed and squeezed.”

The chain supermarkets have not come back to the East Side.

But a growing number of Hispanic groceries have opened. Certified Warehouse Foods original Cass Street site now is occupied by El Ranchito.

Wal-Mart Supercenters have been a big factor in eroding his customer base, Clymer said.

Chain stores at times, he said, are selling a gallon of milk for less than half what he has to pay for it wholesale.

Certified Warehouse Foods moved to the Jackson Street location, a former Kroger store, in 1983. In 1984, the company opened on Richards Street in a building once occupied by A&P. Joliet Councilwoman Bettye Gavin, who represents a large section of the East Side, said the closing of Certified Warehouse Foods will create “a big void for both locations.”

Gavin brought up the Certified Warehouse Foods closing at a meeting of the council’s Economic Development Committee, where she urged city staff to pursue food businesses that might be interested in the locations on Jackson and Richards streets.

Clymer said he did not have a set date for closing, since it depends on how long inventory lasts.

“I’m talking to other people who have gone through this, and they say it’s usually about 30 days,” he said. “I’ve never done this before.”

School building still concern among residents, board candidates

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way School District 210 officials estimate about $814,000 in operations and maintenance savings has been earned thus far this fiscal year, with $469,000 of that because it’s running three schools instead of four.

District officials have been working to reduce the district’s expenses since it was given the worst financial rating by the state in 2015. In one of the most controversial cost-cutting measures, the board decided that year to close Lincoln-Way North High School for this school year.

Taryn Atwell, district spokeswoman, said in an email that district operating expenses have experienced an 8.7 percent decline, equating to a reduction of $5.2 million year over year.

“The most significant cost savings is a result of operating three schools in-

stead of four. Competitive bid processes have also helped to reduce costs,” Atwell said.

North remains a concern among residents and those running for the board in the April 4 elections. North and West high schools were constructed in the late 2000s and funded through a $225 million referendum. The board chose in a 5-2 decision to close North as part of a deficit reduction plan.

At the March 16 board meeting, Frankfort resident Elizabeth Burghard asked district officials what the plan was for North and how limited the district was in repurposing the building.

Superintendent Scott Tingley said North can only be used for government or public use, not for private companies.

“Right now, I think a perfect use would be a college facility [or] college youth center,” Tingley said.

He said there have been discussions with Joliet Junior College about using the building, but the college wouldn’t be

using the whole facility, only a couple of classrooms. Atwell said the expenses for the district to operate the classrooms JJC wanted to use were more than the rent the school was offering.

For now, under an intergovernmental agreement, the building is being partially occupied by the Frankfort Square Park District, which runs several programs at the facility and maintains the grounds. Tingley said the school district expects the park district to use the North building again next year.

Atwell said that although sporting events have not occurred at North, the marching band has used the fields for practice in the past and the district does have the option of continuing to use the building for students.

The question of whether North should be reopened or repurposed was brought up at a Feb. 2 forum attended by six of the 13 candidates running for school board.

Board member Joseph Kirkeeng,

who is running to keep his seat on the board, said the bonds used to build North – and West – have covenants, or legally binding terms of agreement, that limit what the building can be sold or used for.

“We need to sit down and have some very tough discussions about what the short, intermediate and long-term plans are for [North],” Kirkeeng said.

Candidate Robert Ripp said there is no market value for North and if there was, an institution would’ve expressed interest. He said the long-term strategic plan for the district has to include financial projections that “takes into account all of our assets” to see how they can best be used.

At the Lincoln-Way teachers union candidates forum March 8, all the candidates running for the board were favorable to having discussions on using North for traveling sports teams and events if the terms of the bonds allow for it.

Jimmy John’s green-lighted for drive-thru

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Jimmy John’s received approval Monday to have a drive-thru in a plaza at the northwest corner of the Route 59 and Fort Beggs Drive intersection in Plainfield.

The Plainfield Village Board voted, 5-1, in favor of granting the sub sandwich giant a special-use permit that allows for a drive-thru pickup window to be added at the vacant south end of the plaza.

Trustee Ed O’Rourke voted against granting the permit, citing concerns with potential changes to the rest of the shopping center property.

Director of Planning Jon Proulx said it was staff’s opinion that the special-use request is separate from changes to the parking layout of the shopping center, and access points to the plaza, which are being discussed.

“Staff continues to work with the developer, with the affected business owners and with residents on making enhancements to the parking lot itself,” Proulx said. “Those changes would be implemented as part of the resurfacing of the parking lot.”

O’Rourke maintained that adding a drive-thru to what is currently a nondrive-thru location will change traffic flow through the site and all the factors should be looked at as part of one proposal.

“If you’re looking at one you should be looking at the other,” O’Rourke said.

The Plan Commission unanimously recommended approval at a Feb. 21 meeting.

According to village documents, “the applicant has indicated that securing this national tenant is an important

component to remodeling the entire plaza, which will be a significant investment and a dramatic improvement.”

The existing facades will be removed on the south and east sides and upgraded. Village staff indicated in the Feb. 21 meeting that in response to concern from one of the neighboring residents, the rear of the property should be

cleaned up and well-maintained.

A resident who spoke at the Feb. 21 meeting also was concerned about the parking arrangement and associated signage at the plaza.

The Plan Commission stipulated that approval of the site plan is subject to approval by the village’s engineering staff.

D-202 board approves $6.7M improvement plan

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield District 202 board approved a $6.7 million operations and capital improvement plan, along with several construction projects.

At Monday’s board meeting, the board approved a five-year districtwide operational and capital improvement plan that lists repairs, upgrades and other types of work to facilities at the cost of about $6.7 million.

“It’s pretty routine,” Lane Abrell, the district’s superintendent, said about the plan.

According to the district, about $1 million for the plan will be paid for

from operations and maintenance fund, $577,517 from tort, $147,000 from grants and $4.9 million from capital projects fund.

The plan lists the status of projects for the district’s facilities along with their priority level.

Some of the high-priority projects for each of the district’s four high schools include repairing main gym bleachers, turf purchases at North and East high schools, concrete work and security lighting.

The board also approved a $437,237 bid from Lockport-based R. Berti Building Solutions for repairs at Aux Sable Middle School.

The company will complete the slab stabilization at the school’s first

floor, media center, main office and associated hallways, according to the proposal.

Another construction bid the board approved was for Tinley Park-based K.M. Holly Construction Co. to provide a single washroom in compliance with the American with Disabilities Act to the basement of Plainfield Academy, where none currently exists. The bid was for $118,860.

Five-year budget outlook

The board also received a presentation that weighed three scenarios on the district’s financial health within the next five years.

The three scenarios considered the best case for the district in terms of

receiving state funding and avoiding a property tax freeze to the worst case, according to the presentation from Rick Engstrom, assistant superintendent for business and operations.

Under the best-case scenario, with 100 percent state funding, no pension cost shift and no property tax freeze, the district wouldn’t have a budget deficit until fiscal 2019.

“Once you start to see this red,” Engstrom said, noting the deficit, “It starts to eat into your fund balances.”

The other scenarios included what the district is budgeting, which is less optimistic and projects a $4.7 million deficit in fiscal 2018, and the worstcase scenario that projects a $7.7 million deficit that same year.

Bond lowered for Joliet shooting victim cops say lied

Dif- Ramones ferent court documents indicate Ramones is either 32 or 29 years old. Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Koch told Judge Dave Carlson on Monday that Ramones has also been prosecuted under the name “Isaac Rodriguez.”

On Oct. 1, Ramones was brought to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and treated for a bullet wound to

his shoulder. Koch said Ramones told police that he’d been shot while he was in the 500 block of North Broadway Street in Joliet. Defense attorney Todd Lenzie said Ramones was medicated when he was questioned.

“It’s not simply ‘OK, he got the address wrong.’ [Joliet police] sent resources there to investigate this shooting,” Koch said.

After speaking with other witnesses, police went to Ramones’ residence “and found a trail of blood.” Court records indicate Ramones lived in the 800 block of Audrey Avenue at the time.

His assailant has not been identified.

“I’ve never seen the victim of a shooting get charged before. I think the charge is ridiculous,” Lenzie told Carlson.

The judge lowered Ramones’ bond from $75,000 to $15,000. According to documents Koch filed Thursday, Ramones has a 25-page criminal history.

Plainfield police seeking man who posed as cop to get woman’s number The HERALD–NEWS PLAINFIELD – Police say a man impersonated an officer Saturday while trying to get a woman’s phone number.

About 10 p.m. a woman came out of Little Caesar’s Pizza, 13327 S. Route 59, and was approached by a man in uniform with a gun and radio, according to a Plainfield Police Department news release.

The man was white, in his early 40s, 6 feet tall, 200 pounds and had short dark hair. The patch on his sleeve was not a Plainfield police patch, but he identified himself as a Plainfield officer and asked her for identification.

According to the news release, the victim got her driver’s license from her car and showed it to the man, who then asked for a second form of identification.

“The male handed the victim her identification back and indicated he was going to write her a ticket,” police stated in the news release. “The victim asked why she was being issued a ticket and the male indicated he wouldn’t write her a ticket if she gave him her phone number. At that point, the victim walked toward her car and left the area.”

Jeraminas, a code enforcement officer for the city of Wood Dale, touts his 30-plus years in public service. He’s been involved in code enforcement, public education, law enforcement and fire protection, according to his questionnaire. He did not respond Monday to calls seeking comment.

His top three priorities as mayor would be to create sustained growth, bring the city better and safer water, and ensure public safety, he stated in his questionnaire.

Jeraminas stated the greatest challenge to Lockport in the coming years is regaining trust from citizens, but did not go into detail in his questionnaire.

If he could improve on anything over the last four years as mayor, Streit said he wished he could be in more places at once. He said he wants to get the City Council more involved in public events and improve on community outreach with more town hall meetings.

JOLIET – The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced in a news release that occasional lane closures will take place beginning, weather permitting, March 27, on the Ruby Street bridge in Joliet.

The closures are necessary for a bridge repair project, according to the news release.

In order to complete the repairs, intermittent, daytime lane closures will take place on the bridge as needed.

Vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be maintained for the duration of the project. There also will be no impact to marine traffic.

The scope of the project consists of structural steel repairs that will prolong the life of the bridge. The project is expected to be completed in the summer.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through the area, the news release stated. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

LOCKPORT – Voters in the city of Lockport have two options for mayor when voting in the April 4 election.

They are incumbent Steven Streit and challenger Joey Jeraminas.

Streit was first elected in 2013. He’s asking for four more years to finish what he and the City Council have started, while Jeraminas stated in a Herald-News candidate questionnaire that he wants to “bring transparency back to government and to keep open dialogue with the citizens of Lockport.”

Streit said the No. 1 reason he’s running for re-election is because many of the things he, the council and the administration have been working on are still ongoing.

“I want to see things through,” Streit said.

A complete revitalization of downtown Lockport still is in the works.

Streit said it took three years of backand-forth with the Illinois Department of Transportation, but construction bids for the State Street reconstruction project will go out this summer.

In addition to the progress downtown, lots at Lockport Square, located near the intersection of Interstate 355 and 159th Street, are filling up, starting with Panera Bread and Holiday Inn Express, Streit said.

Perhaps Streit’s biggest undertaking, though, is a $48 million capital improvements project initiated early in his term. Streit said the city is $30 million into the effort, having replaced wells and waterways, with more work to do.

“It hadn’t been done to this extent in Lockport in the past,” said Streit, who owns a graphic design business.

Strip mall planned for Plainfield Road

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A local developer plans to create a strip mall out of a Plainfield Road residential site.

Dan Robles would create a strip mall with five storefronts at 1226 Plainfield Road, according to plans presented last week to the Joliet Zoning Board of Appeals and to the Plan Commission.

Both panels approved the plan, which will go to the City Council for final approval.

Robles said he has lined up users for two of the spots in the strip mall and is talking with a restaurant owner about filling a middle spot. Robles also owns a plaza on Collins Street.

The house now on the Plainfield Road site, which was last used as a chiropractic office, would be demolished.

One resident at the zoning board meeting raised questions about a driveway to the site off Connecticut Avenue and its potential to bring traffic into the surrounding neighborhood.

Michael Schwarz, director of planning for Joliet, said city staff believed that the Connecticut Avenue driveway would primarily be used by employees at the strip mall.

“We don’t see that being a major traffic generator,” Schwarz told the board.

The project went to the zoning board for a landscaping variance, which was approved by a vote of 5-1. It does not include landscaping along the rear fence of the property, which borders an alley, to make room for parking spaces.

“Typically, that’s a fence with landscaping. In this case, it’s just a fence,” Schwarz told the zoning board. He added that the alley serves “somewhat as a buffer” between the rear of the property and houses.

Other businesses lined up for the site so far are a cellphone store and a nail salon, Robles said.

The plan includes 44 parking spaces.

The plan also went to the plan commission, which approved a reclassification of the property from single-family residential to neighborhood business zoning.

The Will County Republican Central Committee is seeking qualified applicants to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former Will County Board member Ragan Freitag, according to a committee news release.

Having accepted a position to serve as

chief of staff to the county board, Freitag resigned from her role representing District 6, effective Feb. 25. Her term will expire in December 2018.

District 6 encompasses all of Channahon, Wilmington, Reed, Jackson, Florence, Wesley, Wilton and Custer townships as well as parts of Troy and Joliet townships.

To be eligible for a committee appointment to the open seat, applicants must reside in District 6 and be a U.S. citizen, at least 18, a registered voter with a Republican voting history and a resident of Will County for at least one year.

Survived by his caregiver and beloved wife of 55 years, Lori (nee Ambrosini); loving father of Janice (Brad) Carpentier, David (Nicki) Anderson, and Kathy (Bill) Lindemann; cherished popie of Nathan (Nikki), Zach, Katelynn (Joseph), Josh, Luke, Nick, Anicka, and great-grandfather of Zoey Alexa, Owen, and Giovanni; dear brother of Jack (Janice) and Jerry (Beverlee) Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.

Arthur was born and raised in western Pennsylvania and was part of the last graduating class of Concord High School. He

proudly served in the United States Army from 1959 until 1962. He retired at the age of 55 from the Chicago Transit Authority after 32 years of loyal service. He was a deacon at the First Christian Church of Glen Ellyn and was currently a member of Grace Bible Church, Minooka. Arthur will be remembered as a loving husband and father and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Elsie loved to sew, and sold her aprons and table linens at craft shows under the name “Fancy T. Aprons by Elizabeth.”

NEW YORK – Jimmy Breslin scored one of his best-remembered interviews with President John F. Kennedy’s grave-digger and once drove straight into a riot where he was beaten to his underwear.

In a writing career that spanned six decades, the columnist and author became the brash embodiment of the street-smart New Yorker, chronicling wise guys and big-city power brokers

Hamill, another famed New York columnist who in the 1970s shared an office with Breslin at the Daily News.

“Jimmy really admired people whose favorite four-letter word was work,” said Hamill, speaking from New Orleans.

Breslin died at his Manhattan home of complications from pneumonia.

It was the rumpled Breslin who mounted a quixotic political campaign for citywide office in the 1960s; who became the Son of Sam’s regular correspondent in the 1970s; who exposed

the city’s worst corruption scandal in decades in the 1980s; who was pulled from a car and nearly stripped naked by Brooklyn rioters in the 1990s.

With his uncombed mop of hair and sneering Queens accent, Breslin was a confessor and town crier and sometimes seemed like a character right out of his own work. And he didn’t mind telling you.

“I’m the best person ever to have a column in this business,” he once boasted. “There’s never been anybody in my league.”

Attorney Susan D. Lyons, 77, died on Saint Patrick’s Day, 2017, from non-alcohol-related causes.

Susan was born on January 9, 1940, and was a lifelong resident of Joliet. She was the oldest of three children, of Harold “Bud” Lyons and Mary Jane Davis. Ms. Lyons graduated from Cathedral of St. Raymond School (1953), St. Francis Academy (1957), Barat College (1961) and Northern Illinois University College of Law. She was a woman far ahead of her time. In 1962, she was a teacher at Lemont High School and attended law school at night. After meeting her husband as a first-year law student, she married and decided to take a short sabbatical to focus on raising her children before returning to complete her legal studies, becoming a lawyer in 1978.

Ms. Lyons is survived by her husband and law partner, Samuel J. Andreano. She was the loving mother of nine children, Franklin (Kelly), Samuel (Kirstin), Charles, Mary Sarah, Marjorie(Jon), Gabriel (Susan), her favorite son Anthony (Amanda), Susannah, and Amanda (Anthony Kevin). She carried a special bond with her first grandson, Joseph, and they were inseparable. Known simply as “Buela” to her other 13 grandchildren, Eric, Rebecca, Elliot, Peter, Steven, Sydney, Isabella, Emily, JIMMY, Matthew, Nicholas, Bridget and Victoria; she is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives; as well as many friends.

Dad in murder-suicide talked about killing twins

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Randall Coffland had talked to his wife about killing his daughters in the past, and about killing himself the same day he took his own life and those of the girls, according to police reports released through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Coffland carried through on his March 10 threat, first shooting his twin daughters, Brittany and Tiffany Coffland, both 16, in the head; then shooting his wife in the legs; and finally shooting himself in the head, at 450 S. First St., Apt. 406, reports stated.

apart in St. Charles, reports stated.

Coffland visited his wife, Anjum Coffland, at her place March 9, and relayed that he wanted them to get back together, but she didn’t. Instead, she told him she wanted a divorce, reports stated.

On March 10, he called his wife and said he was going to kill himself, and asked that she come to his place, reports stated. Randall Coffland had made comments about killing the girls in the past, according to reports, but his wife had never taken them seriously.

She came into the kitchen and found Randall Coffland pointing a gun at her. He said the girls already were

dead. He told her he wanted her to survive, so she could live with the situation the rest of her life, and he shot her, reports stated.

Anjum Coffland ran into a bedroom and locked the door, reports stated.

The girls were found in separate rooms covered with blankets, reports stated.

Randall Coffland was found facedown in water in a bathtub with a cellphone on the edge of the tub dialed to 911, reports stated.

The funeral visitation for the girls was held Friday.

Financial assistance for Anjum Coffland has been set up by her neighbor on a YouCaring site for medical

and funeral expenses at www.youcaring.com/anjumcoffland-775004, and now has been turned over to the family, Deputy Police Chief David Kintz stated in an email.

Another fundraiser has been organized for Thursday at Colonial Cafe, 552 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, where the restaurant will donate up to 20 percent of net sales to assist Anjum Coffland.

CHICAGO – State Sen. Daniel Biss said Monday that he’s running for Illinois governor in 2018, joining a growing field of Democrats hoping to unseat Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

The former University of Chicago math professor from Evanston said during an announcement streamed live via Facebook that it’s time to take the state back from special interests that have controlled both parties.

“People across our state are hurting because of the nightmare of the last two years caused by Bruce Rauner,” Biss said while seated in a Chicago office.

“In Illinois billionaires and machine politicians have a monopoly on political power.”

Several other Democrats already are vying to take on Rauner.

Those who’ve already announced bids are businessman Chris Kennedy, the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, Chicago Alderman Ameya Pawar, regional schools Superintendent Bob Daiber and small-business owner Alex Paterakis.

Billionaire businessman J.B. Pritzker said last week that he’s formed a campaign committee to explore a bid and was contributing $200,000 to fund its day-to-day operations.

Biss said he chose the format so he could speak one-on-one with voters and answer their questions, calling it the start of a “movement of the people.”

He used the discussion to call for an end to Illinois’ nearly two-year state budget stalemate, better investment in schools and communities, and a grad-

Biss, who graduated from Harvard University and earned a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, served one term in the Illinois House before he was elected to the Senate in 2012. He considered a bid for comptroller last year but later bowed out.

He was among the harshest critics of Rauner and other Republicans during the 2016 campaign, creating a federal super PAC that spent millions on TV ads linking the governor to then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. The ads featured actors resembling Trump

and Rauner in various scenes, including one in which they dined together then stuck regular people with their bill.

The Illinois Republican Party criticized Biss’ connection to Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, calling him “the North Shore branch of the Madigan machine.”

Spokesman Steven Yaffe noted Biss supported Madigan – Rauner’s chief adversary in Springfield – for House speaker and has taken campaign money from a political fund that Madigan controls. He called the super PAC that Biss formed a “Madigan political front group.”

“Daniel Biss is a willing Mike Madigan accomplice who would give the Governor’s office back to the Chicago machine,” Yaffe said.

The GOP’s strategy, which it has used with other potential and announced rivals, comes as a recent poll found Rauner’s disapproval rating has almost doubled since just after he took office. Statewide, 58 percent of respondents disapprove of Rauner, according to the poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University.

But the poll also found the majority of residents disapprove of Madigan, the longtime speaker who also leads the Democratic Party of Illinois.

According to the poll, 61 percent somewhat or strongly disapprove of Madigan. That’s down from 63 percent last year.

Rauner, a wealthy former private equity investor, put $50 million into his re-election campaign fund last year – money Republicans said was intended as a warning to possible opponents.

FBI confirms probe of Trump-Russia links

WASHINGTON – The FBI is investigating whether Donald Trump’s associates coordinated with Russian officials in an effort to sway the 2016 presidential election, Director James Comey said Monday in an extraordinary public confirmation of a probe the president has refused to acknowledge, dismissed as fake news and blamed on Democrats.

In a bruising five-hour session, the FBI director also knocked down Trump’s claim that his predecessor had wiretapped his New York skyscraper, an assertion that has distracted White House officials and frustrated fellow Republicans who acknowledge they’ve seen no evidence to support it.

The revelation of the investigation of possible collusion with Russians, and the first public confirmation of the wider probe that began last summer, came in a remarkable hearing by one branch of government examining serious allegations against another branch and the new president’s election campaign.

Tight-lipped for the most part, Comey refused to offer details on the scope, targets or timeline for the FBI investigation, which could shadow the White House for months, if not years. The director would not say whether the probe has turned up evidence that Trump associates may have schemed with Russians during a campaign marked by email hacking that investigators believe was aimed at helping the Republican defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton.

“I can promise you,” the FBI director vowed, “we will follow the facts wherever they lead.”

His confirmation of the Russia-links investigation was striking given the FBI’s historic reluctance to discuss its work.

But Comey said the intense public interest in the matter – and permission from the Justice Department – made it appropriate to do so.

Comey said the collusion inquiry began last July as part of a broader probe into Russian meddling in American politics, meaning Trump was elected president as associates remained under investigation for possible connections to Russia.

Clinton allies on Monday contrasted Comey’s silence during the campaign with public comments he made last year when closing out an investigation into Clinton’s email practices and then,

shortly before Election Day, announcing that the probe would be revived after the discovery of additional emails.

Many Democrats blame Comey’s public updates with stoking worries about Clinton’s trustworthiness and turning voters against her.

Comey acknowledged that “some folks may want to make comparisons to past instances” where he and other officials were more open, but he said those were about concluded investigations.

In the current case, it’s not clear how long it will take for the FBI to decide whether a crime was committed, but counterintelligence investigations are known for being complicated and time-intensive – and for frequently concluding without charges.

Comey would not commit to a timetable.

Regardless of the outcome, the investigation is unquestionably an unwelcome distraction for an administration that has struggled to move past questions about ties to Russia. The White House tried anew Monday to distance itself from two former senior members of Trump’s team, Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn, who have been under scrutiny for foreign contacts.

BUSINESS Correcting broker’s bad advice on Costco, Wal-Mart Dear Mr. Berko: I’m 56, and both my wife and I work in real estate. We have about $285,000 in stocks plus a $122,000 annuity we just bought from our stockbroker. We hope to retire in 10 years and then work just part time.

Now, we are looking for income and growth. We own 146 shares of Costco, which we bought at $43 in 2005, and have reinvested all the dividends – which have increased each year, so each year, I get more shares. We do this with all our stocks, which is what you recommended to us many years ago.

Unfortunately, Costco yields only 1 percent. Because we’re now looking for more income, our broker wants us to sell Costco (I have a large tax-loss carryforward in two other stocks our broker sold us) and buy Wal-Mart because it yields 2.9 percent.

Wal-Mart also has a good record of dividend and profit growth. This would triple our income, and we would stay in the same investment sector, which makes good sense to us.

Costco (COST-$164), with 505 wholesale membership warehouses in the U.S. – plus 91 in Canada, 36 in Mexico, 28 in the United Kingdom, 12 in South Korea, 12 in Taiwan and eight in Australia – is one of the finest mega-retailers in the world. Because less than 25 percent of its merchandise is imported, COST is well-insulated from potential changes in the tax code, if Congress has the guts to follow through with trade tariffs. (Some 68 percent of Wal-Mart’s merchandise is imported.)

Membership trends continue to be solid. The 89 percent renewal rate is the best in the industry, and based on the successes of prior increases, I suspect that management will increase its membership fee later this year. It takes about seven or eight quarters for such a fee increase to be fully felt on the income statement, and a small hike would add importantly to COST’s bottom line.

Based on past performance, I’d prefer being an owner of COST over being an owner of Wal-Mart (WMT$71) stock, which has basically acted like flotsam and jetsam for the past dozen years. COST’s net profit mar-

gins of 4 percent are 35 percent higher than WMT’s 2.7 percent, and certainly COST’s sweet stock performance – a fourfold increase in the past dozen years – must be the envy of the WMT boys in Bentonville.

The companies sell similar products, but Wall Street believes that COST does it better. And indeed it does. COST’s 218,000 employees generated $120 billion in revenues last year, creating $2.6 billion in net income, which translates to $18,000 net profit per employee. Meanwhile, WMT’s 2.3 million employees put $500 billion in revenues on the books last year, producing $13.5 billion in net income, or $6,000 net profit per employee.

Hmm! So COST’s employees take home bigger paychecks and better retirement benefits than all those lads and lasses at WMT. Argus Research.

Interest rate hike – what it means and how to react

For only the third time in the last decade, the Federal Reserve announced last week that it would raise the benchmark interest rate 0.25 percent to a target range between 0.75 and 1 percent. The move was widely anticipated on the heels of a strong February jobs report and an inflation number near the Fed’s target of 2 percent.

In general, an interest rate increase conveys confidence in the overall direction of the economy, but the Fed’s decision is complex. As a financial adviser, clients often ask me about the significance of rising interest rates and the overall impact on their portfolio and broader financial picture. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

The factors

Although it may sound simple to raise (or lower) an interest rate, there is a great deal that goes into the process. The Fed evaluates everything from economic indicators and strength of the dollar to market performance and geopolitical factors.

For example, the Fed must analyze how a strong dollar and higher

GUEST VIEW Ronald Stenger interest rate might affect other countries that rely on trade with the United States. The Fed will usually not increase rates unless it believes that U.S. and global markets can absorb a bump without a negative ripple effect.

The decision to raise the benchmark rate is based on a holistic view, but the monthly employment report and inflation rate tend to carry extra weight. For example, the strong February jobs report was a key factor in solidifying expectations of a rate hike in the minds of investors in advance of the Fed’s March meeting.

In fact, it seems as if the market had already priced in the hike by the time the announcement was made on Thursday afternoon. The Fed also pointed directly to an inflation number that has moved closer to their 2 percent target in its statement after the meeting. Both the jobs report and inflation provide a good indication

of the underlying strength of the economy.

The impact

It is important to note that rates are still exceptionally low compared with historical norms. The Fed reduced rates to combat the economic crisis (lower rates encourage borrowing) a decade ago, and we are just now beginning to see upward movement.

To put it in perspective, the Fed has now raised rates twice in the span of three months after raising in December 2015 for the first time since the economic crisis.

Since rates are low, the impact of last week’s interest rate increase is rather small. The average consumer or investor will not notice much of a change until the benchmark rate is significantly higher. Interest rates on credit and other borrowing will be a bit steeper, while savers will notice some extra monthly interest paid to their accounts.

However, there is no reason to overreact. The impact of a quarter-point bump on a $25,000 auto loan, for example, is trivial. The average investor with a 401(k) should

stay the course, avoid making kneejerk reactions and keep focused on their long-term plan.

Looking ahead

The Fed forecast three rate increases for 2017 last December, and Chairwoman Janet Yellen reaffirmed this outlook after the announcement last week. The Fed is striving to reach a target rate of around 3 percent by the end of 2019, representing a return to more normal levels. With this in mind, now is an ideal time to begin repaying any high-interest credit card debt.

Remember, however, the Fed initially aimed for a series of increases in 2016, and only one came to fruition. Any number of factors (such as market volatility or geopolitical instability) can cause forecasts and predictions to change. Rhetoric from the Fed and others may provide clues, but the decision to alter rates ultimately stems from concrete economic data and global conditions.

Bolingbrook hopes to continue its run of success VIEWS Curt Herron After accomplishing something in the last three seasons that no boys basketball program in the area had ever pulled off before in the largest division of the IHSA tournament, the focus will now be on whether Bolingbrook can keep it going over the next few seasons.

And based on the athletes who competed for coach Rob Brost’s team this past weekend at the Class 4A finals in Peoria, it looks like a good bet that the Raiders could easily be picking up more hardware in upcoming seasons.

Following up on a third-place trophy in 2015, Bolingbrook captured the same finish on Saturday after holding off a determined comeback by Fremd.

As a result, the 30-2 Raiders became the area’s first program to capture two trophies in the large-school division within such a short time span. The last time that any area school had won two trophies in a brief amount of time was in 1978 when Lockport capped a 33-0 season with a title, which came five years after the Porters settled for fourth place.

Considering that only five other area teams, beside those two Lockport squads, had ever finished in the top four at state in the large-school division before Bolingbrook pulled off the feat twice in three years, makes the accomplishment even more impressive.

While Bolingbrook will lose its top two scorers, Nana Akenten and Malik Binns, as well as No. 6 scorer Brandon Lawani, it returns scorers three through five, Kaleb Thornton, Joseph Yesufu and Tyler Cochran, with the latter two being around for two more years.

And as was the case with this season’s squad, there’s always the possibility that some new faces may join the returning players, which also includes junior Isaiah Clemmons, who played in half of his team’s minutes in Peoria.

Brost, who is 201-74 in his 10 seasons at the school, is obviously proud of

his program’s success in the past five years (116-27) and how it now ranks among the state’s best.

“It started five or six years ago with Ben Moore and it went to Prentiss (Nixon) and to then to Nana and Brandon Lawani and now to Tyler and Joe,” Brost said. “The guys just understand how to work and to also

trust the coaches. It all started with the guys who came before and specifically, Nana and Brandon really helped our underclassmen to understand what it takes since they were here two years ago and saw what Prentiss did, and now that’s trickled down.

SIUE’s Residori earns All-American honors SUBMITTED REPORT

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Jake Residori placed eighth to earn All-American status at 174 pounds at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis.

The Minooka graduate from Shorewood became the first Cougars wrestler to earn All-American honors in SIUE’s D-I era and the eighth all-time from the school to earn D-I All-American status. The last was four-time D-II national champion Tim Wright, who placed third at the 1987 NCAA D-I Championships.

Residori’s rise as an unseeded wrestler making his first NCAA appearance was impressive even before he defeated fourth-seeded Zach Epperly of Virginia Tech, 8-3, to earn a spot in the top eight nationally.

In his first two matches, he beat both of the Big 12 Conference finalists (7-6 over Oklahoma’s Matt Reed and 6-5 over Oklahoma State’s Kyle Crutchmer) and ended up being the only wrestler to win a pigtail match at the Championships to gain All-American honors.

After falling, 6-2, to Illinois’ Zac Brunson, who placed sixth, the redshirt senior defeated Edinboro’s Ty Schoffstall, 4-1, and pinned Northern

Through the matches late Friday, Residori accumulated the most wins by any wrestler at the Championships. After the win over Epperly that guaranteed All-American status, he lost, 12-2, to Michigan’s Myles Amine, who finished fourth. Residori claimed

eighth place and finished 24-14 this season after falling, 9-4, in another meeting with Crutchmer.

“The road he took to do it is unbelievable,” SIUE coach Jeremy Spates said. “He never stopped in the whole tournament. He fought from whistle to whistle in every match.”

While things look great for the Raiders, it’s also very encouraging for the two teams who finished ahead of them. State champion Whitney Young returns three of its top five scorers in Javon Freeman, Xavier Castaneda and Myles Baker, while Simeon has four of its top five returning in Marquis Brown, Talen Horton-Tucker, Messiah Jones and Kejuan Clements.

Bolingbrook figures to have a smaller squad next season, yet the exciting style that its guards play should make things very interesting.

With the experience that each got in the playoff run, they’re a real force to be reckoned with.

“That’s the ultimate goal in our program – to be an All-American and be a national champ,” Spates said. “It’s a big step in the right direction. I’m so happy for Jake and for our coaches and everybody who has worked so hard to get there.”

The Cougars nearly had a second wrestler advance to the top eight. Freddie Rodriguez lost in the 125-pound quarterfinals, 15-0, to Minnesota’s Ethan Lizak, who claimed second place.

Campbell’s Nathan Kraisser grabbed a 4-1 decision over Rodriguez in the consolation round and finished eighth.

“Freddie has done a great job for us,” Spates said. “He has won big dual matches for us. Today, he came out here and was a hair away. He wrestled hard. He fought the whole time too. He just came up a little bit short. People now know SIUE because of Jake and Freddie. After a season where they were undefeated most of the way, top-ranked for several weeks and set a school record for victories while claiming another third-place trophy, there’s only one more significant accomplishment that the Raiders need to achieve.

And based on the many dynamic players who will be on hand and the valuable experiences that all involved have picked up during the past three seasons, don’t be surprised to see Bolingbrook back in the mix among the state’s best squads for the 2017-18 season.

“It’s always a dream for a high school team to be one of the final four teams in the state,” Cochran said. “Everybody on our team came together as one and we had one common goal, which was to get down here. And even though we didn’t get a first place, we got a win here. Now is time to start thinking about next year and it will be fun playing with my brother Joe again and also Kaleb and whoever else is out there, getting up and down the court.”

Ex-Hilltoppers shine: Freshman Drake Fellows (JCA) is in the starting rotation at pitching-rich Vanderbilt (13-8) and is 3-0 with a 1.72 ERA in 311/3 innings. Grubbs to UMSL: It seemed that everywhere I went to cover boys high school basketball this season, somebody wanted to talk about Joliet Central 6-foot-3 senior Jose Grubbs.

Multiple opposing coaches, without being asked, mentioned how much they like his all-around game, how there’s not a coach in the area who would not want him on his team.

A question from coaches and others was where Grubbs would play in college.

The answer came from Grubbs this week via Twitter. He will play in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference at Missouri-St. Louis, a rival of Lewis in that league.

I agree with Michael O’Brien from the Chicago Sun-Times who said UMSL is getting a steal.

In the NIT: Guard Prentiss Nixon (Bolingbrook) and Colorado State were playing a late Monday game against Cal State-Bakersfield.

Team USA will face unbeaten Japan in Tuesday night’s World Baseball Classic semifinal game at Dodger Stadium.

The semifinal, the game in a single-elimination tournament where it often is said there is more pressure than any other, including the championship game.

Washington Nationals righthander Tanner Roark, a Wilmington graduate, will be the starting pitcher for Team USA and manager Jim Leyland.

That gives us an idea how far Roark has come in his development into a bona fide major league pitcher.

It also is about time.

Roark has pitched only 11/3 innings so far in the WBC, and Nationals manager Dusty Baker reportedly has expressed his disappointment over that. Roark left Nationals’ training camp March 5 to join Team USA. In the two-plus weeks since, his throwing largely has been limited to bullpen sessions.

Thus Baker’s issue. By the time Roark rejoins the Nationals later this week, there will be roughly one week of spring training remaining. The manager did not want Roark, who had pitched seven shutout innings over two early spring starts for the Nationals, to be in a situation where

Daly back to lead experienced Wildcats

Shaw Media correspondent PLAINFIELD – With 11 seniors on the roster, Plainfield Central softball coach Anne Campbell can’t complain about a lack of experience.

“It’s the most seniors I’ve ever had on one team,’’ said Campbell, who is starting her 15th season as coach.

That group as been the key part of a winning program – Central was 29-5 in 2015 and 21-11 last year. Seven returning starters give the Wildcats plenty of optimism for another successful season.

“They’re a group that have been playing together for a long time,’’ Campbell said. “They all get along really well and they enjoy being around each other. That’s half the fun right there.’’

At the top of the list is pitcher Brooklyn Daly, who has won 61 varsity games the past three seasons.

Daly, a Drexel University recruit, was 18-8 last year with a 1.71 ERA in 29 games, including 23 starts. She also hit .418 with four home runs and 23 RBIs. “Every year I just try to mature my pitches a little more and get stronger in the gym,’’ Daly said. “I feel like every year I improve a little more because ev-

“A more positive mentality, keep it neutral. I’m not going low, or I’m not going super high. Stay consistent. If things aren’t going your way, you have to keep it calm.’’

The other returning starters are shortstop Sammi Newtoff, second baseman Alejandra Ochoa, outfielders Kayley Grabowski, Sara Peterson and

Courtney Polanski, and catcher Maria Connell. A player or two could be in for a position change in the 2017 lineup.

Newtoff, a Wisconsin-Parkside recruit, batted .314 with a team-high seven homers.

“We’re all really close,’’ Newtoff said. “We spend every day with each other, trying to get better. I think it’s going to help a lot, too, when we go to Myrtle Beach. We’re going to spend a lot of time together.’’

Central is going to participate in the Ripken Experience, a softball tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, during spring break. Campbell said the Wildcats will take the 18-hour bus ride to play five teams from Ohio at the three-day event.

The Wildcats’ offense also gets a lot of production from Peterson (.481, five HR, 25 RBIs), Connell (.349) and Ochoa (.320).

“We have a lot of talent and we’re working hard,’’ said Grabowski, who will attend Ripon College.

Central won the Class 4A Plainfield South Regional title game last year, 11-10, over Romeoville. The Wildcats’ season ended with a 3-0 loss to Homewood-Flossmoor in the Lockport Sectional semifinals.

Plainfield East is the defending Southwest Prairie Conference champion, and Central won the conference title in 2015 with a 14-0 record.

“It’s like I told our team, I think we’re going to be one of the toughest conferences in the state this year,’’ Campbell said. “There were only two or three seniors on our all-conference team last year. The rest were all underclassmen.

“Plainfield East returns virtually their whole team. Oswego East was really strong and they’ve got virtually everyone back. North didn’t lose much.

There’s not a weak team in our conference. Joliet West, you throw them in the mix now, too. Minooka didn’t lose much. It’s going to be a battle this year.’’

Grabowski, one of three team captains, is looking forward to the conference schedule.

“I think we definitely have a chance because we beat Plainfield East last year during the season,’’ Grabowski said. “I think we’re contenders this year.’’

Central certainly has experience on its side.

“The majority of us are seniors,’’ Daly said. “It’s our last year, so we want to make it our best year.’’

PLAINFIELD – A baseball coach this year who says his team couldn’t get the ball out of the infield could be talking about playing against Plainfield Central.

The Wildcats return all four infielders from the 2016 team that finished 22-17 and won a regional title for the first time in the program’s history.

“We were pretty excited about that,’’ coach John Rosner said. “Any time you get to hang a banner that hasn’t been up yet is pretty neat.

“There were some ups and some downs, and ultimately we ended up playing well. We pitched well down the stretch and in the playoffs. It was a good group of kids. We’ll miss those seniors and our goal this year is bigger and better things.’’

Central should be able to rely on its experienced infield to build on last year’s success, which included a 6-1 win over Waubonsie Valley for the championship of the Class 4A Downers Grove South Regional.

Three seniors – shortstop Cam Cercone (.316), second baseman Kyle Cockrell (.274) and first baseman Nate Yusko – and junior third baseman David Ascencio will bolster the defense.

“It’s great to have everyone back,’’ Cockrell said. “We all connect very well. Getting the infield back with experience, we’ve all been to the regional and the sectional. We know how it feels to be in those high pressure situations.

“We don’t have to speak all the time to know what each guy is doing.

We kind of just look at each other or just do it out of instinct, knowing they’ll be there.’’

Cercone and Cockrell have baseball on their minds when they’re off the field, too.

“You’ve got to have connections with each other,’’ Cercone said. “Me and Kyle, we talk about that all the time. We’ll see each other in the hallways at school and say, ‘Ready to turn two today?’ ’’ Right-hander Brandon Callender (5-4, 2.23 ERA) pitched a team-high 65 innings in 2016 and is expected to lead the staff. Outlook: The Southwest Prairie Conference schedule could be the toughest yet for Central, which won its first regional title last year. The Wildcats have an experienced infield, a proven pitcher in Callender, and a few more good arms to get them through the season.

“Pitching smarter, I’ve gotten older and stronger,’’ he said. “I can throw harder. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve matured and learned to chal-

lenge hitters, especially learning how to throw with two strikes on the batter and no balls. You don’t want to give him anything good to hit.’’

Rocco Pascente will be behind the plate, Collin Hudetz returns in the outfield and Sean Eulitz, Michaud, Nick Heffernan and Nate Haupt are outfield candidates.

Assistant coach Pat Hanley, a Central graduate who played basketball in high school and college, has helped the Wildcats succeed on the diamond the past five seasons.

“I couldn’t do what we do without him,’’ Rosner said. “I kind of got him to convert and come over a little bit.

He’s been just awesome. He calls the pitches and works with the pitchers.’’

Speaking of pitching, Plainfield South will have plenty in the Southwest Prairie Conference.

“Plainfield South is probably the team to beat,’’ Rosner said. “Plainfield South has three Division I arms.

They won the summer state tournament. It will probably be the best conference in the state this year. I’m obviously a little biased. It’ll be a meat grinder each and every week.’’

All four Plainfield schools and Minooka won regional championships last season.

“I think that’s what prepares us for regionals and postseason, because we have such a great conference,’’ Cercone said. “We’re playing good teams and good pitchers all season.’’

Callender, who will attend Judson in Elgin, hopes the season will last even longer this year.

“We’re hoping to go farther than regionals this year,’’ Callender said.

“We’ve got that under our belt now.

“That’s a big focus for me,” he said. “That means my fastball command (is there). My fastball command was much better (than the last start).”

Through Sunday’s Cactus League action, Davis had pitched 21/3 innings in three games, giving up six hits and four runs.

“It’s definitely a blessing to be on a team that’s this young and motivated and talented,” said Davis, who was moved to the bullpen by now-Cubs manager Joe Maddon in Tampa Bay for the 2011 postseason and then full time for the 2012 regular season.

Maddon described Davis as “physically gifted,” and said his stuff got better

when he became a reliever.

“His stuff is above and beyond, especially when we put him in the bullpen and he stayed there on a more consistent basis. You see the velocity, the break and all that kind of stuff,” Maddon said.

“There was definitely an uptick from starting to relieving. You’d see flashes of that as a starter. You see it more consistently stuff wise as a reliever.

“And the other side: this incredible calm about him. That’s a big part of what plays so well in the bullpen, the fact that he is able to process the moment so slowly.”

Let’s not forget Rondon. In the past three years with the Cubs, he piled up 77 saves (30 in 2015). He went on the disabled list Aug. 19 with a right triceps strain. In the final month of the season, he had a 9.82 ERA and a WHIP of 2.05.

Strop hurt his knee in August and then suffered a groin injury while rehabbing the knee. He was out for more than a month. In the early days of this year’s spring training, he signed a oneyear contract extension through 2018.

If both Strop and Rondon can return to form, the Cubs will boast a deep back of their bullpen.

The same caution that applies to financial services applies to major league bullpens: Past performance is no guarantee of future success.

Relief pitching is the most fickle aspect of any baseball team. Injuries, the accumulation of innings and changes in performance force even the best of teams to parade reliever after reliever through their bullpens year after year.

Even while winning a world championship last year, the Cubs had their issues. They capitalized on the market in July, obtaining lightning-thrower Aroldis Chapman as their second-half and postseason closer. They drained all they could from Chapman before he returned to the Yankees as a free agent.

There were other issues. Displaced closer Hector Rondon and top setup man Pedro Strop were slowed by injuries late in the season, and neither was the same after coming back. Both are back in camp and professing to be healthy.

Chapman has been replaced by dependable and low-key closer Wade Da-

vis, who was obtained from the Kansas City Royals in a trade for outfielder Jorge Soler.

Lefty Travis Wood signed with the Royals, and his role will be filled by fellow left-hander Brian Duensing. Righthander Justin Grimm is back, and the Cubs took a chance on righty Koji Uehara, who turns 42 on April 3. They’ll join a mix that includes intriguing youngster Carl Edwards Jr., who got 10th-inning experience in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.

Another reminder: The bullpen a team starts the season with is rarely the one that finWade Davis ishes the season.

The man to watch is Davis. The Cubs gave up a promising young position player for Davis, who can become a free agent after this season.

Last year, Davis saved a career-best 27 games (in 30 chances) in going 2-1 with a 1.87 ERA and a WHIP of 1.13.

During the Royals’ world championship season of 2015, Davis was 8-1 with a 0.94 ERA, 17 saves and a WHIP of 0.79.

OAK LAWN – On the 10th anniversary of her passing, a Plainfield family is honoring the memory of their late daughter by presenting a donation to help pediatric patients at Advocate Children’s Hospital.

In honor of Natalie “Bug” Siemek, the Siemek family collected donations from family and friends to buy three Wunderwagons, toy wagons specially made to give children a safe and familiar means of transportation within a hospital. The whimsical animal-shaped wagons feature a special trailer that allows a wheeled IV pole to be safely transported behind the wagon.

Family members presented the wagons to hospital representatives on March 4, at the Oak Lawn campus. A hospital chaplain blessed the wagons as part of a short ceremony with officials from the hospital and Advocate Charitable Foundation.

Called “Bug” by her family because of her small size, Natalie was born Nov. 15, 2005, with a congenital heart defect

called hypoplastic right heart syndrome. Babies suffering from this rare condition have underdeveloped structures on the right side of their heart, making it difficult for the heart to pump blood to the lungs.

Natalie underwent her first surgery at Advocate Children’s Hospital when she was just a week old; she underwent open heart surgery at just 4 months old.

She spent the next several months recovering, learning to walk and undergoing speech therapy but died at Advocate Children’s Hospital on March 5, 2007, at 15 months old.

The Siemek family, which includes Natalie’s parents, Dan and Carrie, and her older sisters, Emily, 15, and Audrey, 13, have kept Natalie’s spirit alive with the formation of “Bug’s Pals.”

Every year the organization donates toys to Advocate Children’s Hospital and arranges a hospital visit from “Star Wars” characters.

U.S. Olympic walker teaches students how to be champions SHOREWOOD – “Believe it and achieve it” was the message threetime Summer Olympic walking champion Debbi Sullivan wanted students at Troy Shorewood Elementary School to absorb.

Sullivan was a guest at a school assembly during its first Self-Esteem Week, held in February.

She demonstrated to the students and teachers the proper way to do the Olympic walk, and the students then had walking races and walking relay races.

She set the world record in speed walking in 1993, walking the 1,500-meter at 5:53:41. Sullivan also broke American walking records four times between 1992-96. She was a member of the USA Olympic Team in 1992, 1996 and 2000, and was a member of the USA Pan American Games in Cuba in 1991.

David Livingston and Michael Scudder have been appointed to Silver Cross board of directors The HERALD-NEWS NEW LENOX – David Livingston and Michael Scudder have been appointed to the Silver Cross Hospital board of directors.

Livingston is the 10th and current president of Lewis University in Romeoville. He previously served as president of Lourdes University for three years, and also at Michael Mercyhurst University Scudder for 16 years in various diverse capacities, including president of the faculty senate and vice president for advancement.

Before joining the Mercyhurst community, he taught religious studies at Loyola Academy High School in Wilmette, Vanderbilt University in Nashville, University of St. Francis in Joliet, Joliet Catholic Academy and Loyola University of Chicago.

Livingston received his Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from Augustana College; his Master in Arts degree in theology from Loyola University, and his doctorate in theology from Vander-

Michael L. Scudder is the president and chief executive officer of First Midwest Bancorp Inc. and the chairman of the board and chief executive officer of First Midwest Bank. He also serves as a member of the advisory committee of the First Midwest Board.

Before his current appointment in 2008, Scudder served as First Midwest Bancorp’s president and chief operating officer and as its chief financial officer.

He also has served in various other management capacities in his 30 years of service to First Midwest. He began his professional career at KPMG. Scudder is an active member of the ABA’s American Bankers CEO Council and the Mid-Size Bank Coalition of America. He also is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago and The Bankers

Club of Chicago.

Additionally, he is a member of the Executive Committee of DePaul University’s Center for Financial Services and the Metropolitan Planning Council’s Executive Advisory Board.

Previously he served as an inaugural member of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Community Depository Institution Advisory Council. Scudder serves as the chairman of the First Midwest Charitable Foundation in addition to various civic and charitable organizations.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Illinois Wesleyan University and a master’s from DePaul University.

Livingston and Scudder join 12 members of the Silver Cross board of directors. Men are more prone to tinnitus than women, and it becomes increasingly common as we age. Individuals who work in loud environments, such as factories and construction sites, are at increased risk. Recent studies suggest that earbuds, which sit so close to the delicate structures of the inner ear, also may put users at higher risk.

At this time, there is no single treatment for tinnitus. An examination by an ear specialist, known as an otolaryngologist, can pinpoint whether tinnitus is due to earwax buildup, medication or, more rarely, a blood vessel condition. These often are treatable. If not, your doctor can help you explore noise suppression techniques such as using a white noise machine, or masking devices that are worn in the ears.

Meanwhile, you can take steps to lessen the impact of tinnitus. Make sure your blood pressure is under control, avoid loud noises, which can set off a tinnitus episode, and – this will improve your overall quality of life – be sure to get enough rest.

Dear Doctors: Sometimes, I get a sudden hissing sound in my right ear that lasts for a few minutes and then slowly goes away.

What is it, and is there anything I can do to make it stop?

Dear Reader: What you’re experiencing is known as tinnitus, which is the medical term for a perceived sound that doesn’t have an external source. Tinnitus is not a condition in and of itself, but is instead a symptom of some other underlying problem.

Exposure to noise is a major cause of tinnitus, as is hearing loss. Both can result in damage to the sensitive hair cells that line the cochlea. This is the portion of the inner ear that translates vibrations into nerve impulses, which are then sent to the brain to be interpreted as sound.

Blockage due to earwax buildup, as well as changes to the ear bones as we age, can contribute to tinnitus. Some medications, including certain antibiotics, cancer drugs, antidepressants and high doses of aspirin, are known to play a role in tinnitus.

Although the most common form of tinnitus involves a ringing in the ears, people with this condition also may hear the hissing you describe, as well as buzzing, clicking, humming, whistling or a roaring sound, like wind.

In rare cases, patients with tinnitus even have reported hearing music. Tinnitus can affect one or both ears. It ranges in volume from a low, background noise that is bearable and even forgettable, to sounds so loud and persistent that they interfere with daily life. In many cases, tinnitus is temporary. In severe cases, the phantom sounds never go away.

It is estimated that up to 45 million Americans – that’s 15 percent of the population – report having some form of tinnitus on a regular basis. Like you, the vast

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY fiance and I have been engaged for Jeanne two years. Our Phillips wedding is set for a year from now.

Over South’s one-spade opening, North responded four diamonds, a splinter bid promising four-card or longer spade support, a singleton or void in diamonds and at least game-going values. This bid improved South’s hand, so he control-bid the heart ace. That was sufficient for North, who jumped to five no-trump, which was the Grand Slam Force, asking South to bid seven spades with two of the top three spade honors.

At first glance, maybe you went for these 13 tricks: five spades, two hearts, three clubs and three diamond ruffs in the dummy. However, the bad heart break is fatal.

It is better to play for five spades, three hearts, three clubs and two diamond ruffs. Declarer should draw trumps and cash the heart ace.

(Starting with the heart king is fatal if West has all four hearts, unlikely though that may be.) If both opponents follow, South plays a heart to the king, discards his remaining hearts on the top clubs and ruffs a heart.

Here, when West discards, declarer also plays a heart to the king and pitches his last three hearts, but then he leads the heart jack for a ruffing finesse through East’s queen to establish a third winner in the suit.
