The Mar Theatre – Wilmington Movies were a new form of entertainment for Americans in the early 20th century.

As the average hours worked each week decreased for many, their wages rose, and many people sought new ways to spend their time and money.

In cities and small towns, there was a wide range of recreational activities available to a public looking for entertainment opportunities: dance halls, billiard parlors, amusement parks, vaudeville performances and professional sports. As fun as these activities were, nothing was more popular or widespread as the movies.

From the first freestanding nickelodeons, which began the process of showing projected motion pictures to small groups, to the larger cathedral movie houses, millions of Americans embraced the art of movie making in the early years.

For movie fans during the Studio Era, the more than 17,000 movie theaters in operation across America during the 1940s represented their own diversity of screen experiences. These venues ranged from small-town theaters, with the capacity of only a few hundred patrons, to the nearly 6,000 seats at the Roxy Theatre in New York City.

The single-screen movie theaters that punctuated small-town America’s main streets and city neighborhoods since the 1930s are all but gone. In many American towns for most of the 20th century, movie theaters were located near the heart of the commercial, civic and social life.

For most Americans, movie going was linked to the experience of going to town for a night out. This might have meant a short trip to town once a week, or for some, it might have meant a long trek a couple of times a year.

One example of a small-town theater that began operation during the early years of Hollywood’s Studio Era was the Mar Theatre in Wilmington. Located on South Main Street, the Mar Theatre

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way School District 210 officials have hired a new business manager they say will provide “checks and balances” for the district.

The board on Thursday approved hiring Bradley Cauffman, a chief financial officer for a Naperville school district, as the new assistant superintendent of business. Under a threeyear contract, Cauffman will earn

a salary of $153,000, increasing to $159,000 by 2020.

The district’s finances have come under heavy scrutiny since 2015, when it was given the state’s worst financial rating and the board approved in a highly controversial decision the closure of Lincoln-Way North High School to cut costs.

As the new business manager, Cauffman will lead, plan, organize and direct operational financial and budgeting services, which includes being responsible for tax levies, an-

nual budgets, bids, contracts and managing the district’s long-term debt.

Cauffman said he thinks the position will be a great opportunity and that District 210 is a great district.

“I believe my skill set – along with working with [the district’s] team of administrators – I believe it will be a great opportunity for everybody all around,” Cauffman said.

He will fill a position that has been vacant for about a year. Ronald Sawin, the previous business manager,

agreed to an accelerated retirement pact last March that acknowledged a dispute between him and the board over his performance.

Cauffman works as the chief financial officer for Naperville School District 203. Before working in Naperville, he was chief financial officer for St. Charles School District 303.

Sue Klen understood the golden rule

JOLIET – Whether she was advocating for pot-bellied pigs or zombies, Sue Klen loved helping, had fun doing it and was extremely proud of being a fourth-generation Joliet resident.

And, being a leap year baby in 1964, Sue also loved leap year trivia.

“It takes the Earth 365 days, five hours, 49 minutes and 16 seconds to complete an orbit,” Sue said in a 2016 Herald-News story. “So, since it’s less than six hours, if you were to add a day every four years, it’s going to be snowing in July eventually. So every 100 years, we skip leap year unless that year is evenly divisible by 400.”

Her spirited side notwithstanding, Sue was serious about service, and her obituary showed it. She was a former Joliet Junior College trustee, a member of the board of directors for both the Joliet Township High School Foundation and the JTHS Alumni Association, a member of the Zonta Club of Joliet, a supporter of the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living and a committee member for Witches Night Out. In the 1980s, Sue also was a docent for the Brookfield Zoo, said Barbara Meurer of Joliet, Sue Klen’s mother.

But that was Sue, a compassionate person who never bragged about “doing good,” Barbara said.

“She did everything for others and truly cared about making someone else’s life better, even though she wasn’t feeling well herself,” Barbara said.

But Sue’s involvement went beyond mere volunteering.

“She did the right thing for the right reason,” said John Leeson of Joliet, Sue’s husband, adding that he was proud of all her charitable efforts.

In addition to being caring, Sue was smart, Barbara said. Sue had been recruited for an accounting job before she graduated from the former College of St. Francis in 1989, Barbara said.

And not one to let grass grow under her feet, when Sue was later laid off, she went back to school and earned a degree in horticulture from Joliet Junior College, Barbara said.

At school or at work, Sue was the type to welcome new people, to say, “Come have lunch with me.” She “lived by the golden rule” and “treated others the way she wanted to be treated,” Barbara said.

But Sue also understood the lighthearted side of life. She was the child who hosted the Halloween body parts guessing game, where the blindfolded attendees would touch grape “eyes” and noodle “brains,” Barbara said.

It was Sue’s fun side that first attracted John, who married her in 2004.

He’d met her while playing pool and felt immediately drawn to her playfulness, friendliness and sense of humor.

“She was a down-to-earth girl,” John said. “She didn’t put on any airs.”

The last time John saw Sue was when he left for his pool league and then went to work. But before Sue died March 7 at age 53, she and John made many happy memories.

They sparred over baseball (John was an Indians fan and Sue was a Cubs fan), and Illinois road trips because they both “got a kick” out of historical markers. But even when they didn’t share an interest, Sue found a way to share it.

“She did everything for others and truly cared about making someone else’s life better, even though she wasn’t feeling well herself.”

Take the case of Formula One racing. Sue had no interest in watching races, but she did plan themed meals for John to complement the world racing schedule – chop suey when teams raced in China, paella when the location was Spain and Vienna sausages for Austria.

In turn, John loved stopping at Euro Homeland Delicatessen in Romeoville after work to pick up items Sue needed.

bara said. “Those were her specialties.”

So was stroganoff, John said. Sue was such a great cook, she even boiled water better than most people, he added. Sue cooked for John, she cooked for friends, she cooked for neighbors when they were ill.

“She enjoyed pleasing people,” John said. “Her goal was to make them happy. Her signature line on her email address said, ‘Have a great day.’ And she meant it.”

Maybe that’s because Sue herself was a happy person, someone who found joy in daily life. She loved polkas at St. Joseph’s Park in Joliet, KC and the Sunshine Band concerts, reading Stephanie Plum mysteries and picking tomatoes from her garden.

“She’d eat three of them before she got into the house,” John said.

So when they get a box from home, it means a great deal to them, Thompson said.

This spring’s drive, which has already been delivered to Operation Care Package in Manhattan, was the biggest collection since the Shorewood Knights began participating in 2014.

Being a U.S. Air Force veteran who spent several years in Vietnam during the war, John Thompson knows all too well what it means to receive a package from home, with home being family or anyone from the U.S. He recalls getting packages from the United Service Organizations during his deployment.

“It brightens your day. It’s a big morale booster,” Thompson told me.

“When you open that stuff up, you love to share it with your friends.”

Now, as a member of the Knights of Columbus 15732 of Holy Family Parish in Shorewood, Thompson is able to return the favor and give back some of those special reminders of home to our troops deployed overseas.

Thompson is one of eight committee members of the 94-member Knights of Columbus in Shorewood who make sure our troops get some good, old-fashioned love and necessities twice a year. The group holds

This time, they collected 1,500 pounds of food and other items to send, plus $2,145 for Operation Care Package to use toward postage (each package costs an average of $17 to mail overseas). Other members of Holy Family Parish made monetary donations directly to Operation Care Package.

“We filled three huge metal mail bins, a table and several carts,” Thompson said. “It was quite substantial; by far our biggest drive to date.”

What makes their care packages more special are the letters and notes written to our soldiers, which are included in the Knights boxes. The letters are written by school and

religious education children of Holy Family Parish and decorated with stars, hand-drawn flags and notes that thank them for protecting our freedom.

Holy Family parish is very supportive of the Knights’ project, Thompson said, but there are several other Knights of Columbus groups in the area that do the same kind of projects to support our troops.

“When you hear a good idea, you do it,” Thompson said.

One of the four principles of a Knight is charity, he said, and Operation Care Package is a program that fits that bill.

Residents get a look inside ‘The Castle’

JOLIET – Joliet residents were given a tour of “The Castle” and a nearby excavated site that soon will be home to a winery.

Phil Soto with Sehring Property Holdings led a tour with 11 visitors Saturday through a 19th century house on Bridge Street known as “The Castle” because of its limestone walls and turrets.

Sehring Property Holdings acquired the house, along with two other buildings nearby, and plans to use it for wine tasting, sales and events.

The developers plan to replicate the old brewery building at the site. During a cleanup of the site, they uncovered the foundation of the brewery.

“Luckily, this ‘Castle’ is in pretty good shape,” Soto said.

During the tour, Soto demonstrated that by knocking on the walls inside the house.

“All solid walls,” he said.

The house was built by brewer Frederick Sehring and later became the first home for bishops when the Diocese of Joliet was created in 1948.

Visitors walked through each room in the house, seeing stained glass windows, chimneys with ornate tiling and wood carving, the library, the kitchen, the dining room and some diocesan artifacts.

Some construction work has been done inside the house to explore other aspects of its structure, such as opening up the ceilings in the rooms.

“We’re doing what we can so we can see what’s there,” Soto said.

The tour took guests down to the basement of the house, where they were able to see a room with a vault and another room that happened to have an old wine rack. In another room, work was being done to dig into a floor that appeared to be poured with concrete to see what lay beneath it.

The next stop of the tour was over a hilly area to an excavated site revealing small cistern-like structures and more limestone, which impressed the guests.

Soto has said Sehring Property Holdings is aiming to have the winery operating by fall so it can have its first grape crushing for the wine, but it wouldn’t be open to the public then. He has said it takes a year and a half to get wine ready for consumption.

Diane Harris, a Joliet Public Library District board trustee and Joliet City Council candidate in the April election, was on the tour and said the winery will be a dynamic addition to the city.

Cauffman’s total compensation is

$189,705 this year, which includes benefits and other expenses. It’s $17,718 less than the total compensation for his position at Naperville District 203, according to Tingley’s memo to the board that analyzed the salary pool for area school business officials.

The memo also stated the average total compensation for similar positions in comparable districts – such as Joliet Township High School District 204 – is $220,015.

After the board approved Cauffman’s hiring, board President Dee Molinare welcomed him to the district.

Lincoln-Way District 210 Superintendent Scott Tingley said Cauffman’s position will create a “system of checks and balances” with Kelly Luzzo, the district’s finance director.

Luzzo, along with interim business manager Richard Pagliaro, was hired by the district last summer after Sawin’s retirement.

“It provides that checks and balances, which is one of the things the auditors had asked us for this last time around. It puts us in a much better position,” Tingley said.

Tingley said the district still has work to do on its general ledger, or record of financial transactions. Cauffman becoming business manager for the district will allow Luzzo to focus her time on daily accounting needs, he said.

Voters register objections to parts of budget deal

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate’s “grand bargain” budget compromise has had a rough go, with false starts, misfires, a lukewarm Republican reception and Democrats abruptly pulling the plug last month when GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner weighed in against it. And that doesn’t count taxpayers’ reaction.

The 12 disparate measures comprising the grand bargain were cobbled together in an attempt to recharge stalled negotiations over a two-year budget stalemate that has fueled a multibillion-dollar budget deficit. An Associated Press analysis of Senate records shows nearly 4,700 witnesses wanting a say in at least one of the individual measures.

Less than a fifth recorded support.

“If gambling could solve the budget crisis, it would have done so by now,” said Kathy Gilroy, an independent insurance agent and anti-gambling activist from Villa Park, who filed her objection electronically. “Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.”

It’s that type of opposition that hamstrings hopes of a deal, particularly one so widespread and complex. Even if lawmakers could agree, a “yes” vote could push voters to eject them at the next election. That’s especially true when the critics are well-funded groups with clout, such as labor unions, business interests or teachers.

Pipeline connecting Chicago to Detroit now in service

PORTAGE, Mich. – Officials said a fuel pipeline running from the Chicago area to the Detroit area is now in service.

The Wolverine Pipe Line Company has announced that the first commercial volume for the Detroit Metro Access Pipeline shipped earlier this month. The roughly 34 miles of pipeline connects to an existing Wolverine pipeline to transport refined petroleum products.

WASHINGTON – The top two lawmakers on the House intelligence committee said Sunday that documents the Justice Department and FBI delivered late last week offered no evidence that the Obama administration had wiretapped Trump Tower, but the panel’s ranking Democrat said the material offers circumstantial evidence that American citizens colluded with Russians in Moscow’s efforts to interfere in the presidential election.

“There was circumstantial evidence of collusion; there is direct evidence, I think, of deception,” Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said.

“There’s certainly enough for us to conduct an investigation.”

The House intelligence committee is to begin hearings Monday into Russia’s role in cybersecurity breaches at the Democratic National Committee, as well as President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated claim that his predecessor had authorized a wiretap of Trump Tower. FBI Director James Comey and Mike Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency, are slated to testify.

Intelligence officials have said that Russia was behind the theft of Democratic National Committee emails last summer. The U.S. government later concluded that the Russian government directed the DNC hack in an attempt to influence the outcome of November’s presidential election.

“For the first time the American people, and all the political parties now, are paying attention to the threat that Russia poses,” committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., said.

“We know that the Russians were trying to get involved in our campaign, like they have for many decades. They’re also trying to get involved in campaigns around the globe and over in Europe.”

Nunes said the committee will also exam-

ine whether the Russians were trying to sow doubt in the U.S. electoral system or whether they were trying to help Trump get elected to the White House.

“We need to get to the bottom of that,” Nunes said.

Nunes and Schiff were among a number of lawmakers who said on Sunday’s news shows they had seen no evidence that the Obama administration ordered wiretaps on Trump during the campaign.

“Was there a physical wiretap of Trump Tower? No there never was,” Nunes said. “The information we received Friday continues to lead us in that direction.”

Nunes added: “There was no FISA warrant I am aware of to tap Trump Tower.” FISA stands for the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which requires investigators to seek a warrant from a secret court to wiretap a foreign suspect.

Republican Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Susan Collins of Maine also said Sunday they had seen no evidence that the Obama administration had placed Trump under surveillance at Trump Tower, the Manhattan highrise that houses Trump’s residence, business office and campaign office. Ryan: Help for elderly needed in GOP health bill

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Days before a pivotal vote, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Sunday he will seek changes to a GOP health care bill to provide more help to older people. The new willingness to compromise was a bid for more support from moderate Republicans, who expressed continuing unease about the plan to replace Barack Obama’s health law unless significant changes were made.

Ryan insisted that he felt “very good” about the bill’s prospects but acknowledged that House leadership was “making fine-tuning improvements to the bill to reflect people’s concerns.”

A House vote is scheduled for Thursday.

“We believe we should have even more assistance. And that’s one of the things we’re looking at for that person in their 50s and 60s because they experience higher health care costs,” the Wisconsin Republican said.

Under the GOP plan, older people who are not yet eligible for Medicare stand to be the biggest losers. It would shrink the tax credits they use to help buy insurance, and it would increase their premiums because the bill allows insurers to charge more as people age and become more susceptible to health problems.

On Sunday, Ryan said he believed the CBO analysis was not accurate because Obamacare wouldn’t be able to last 10 years. But he said the additional assistance was one of several House revisions to be discussed in advance of Thursday’s vote, along with possible changes to help low-income people more with tax credits and require able-bodied Medicaid recipients to meet work requirements.

“We think that we should be offering even more assistance than what the bill currently does,” he said.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price also said legislative revisions were possible.

Their comments came as President Donald Trump and House leaders seek to win support from GOP skeptics as prospects for the bill remain wobbly.

Last week, Trump agreed to add fresh Medicaid curbs to appease some conservatives. But moderate Republicans are balking over the CBO’s findings that millions more people would lack coverage even while premiums in many cases could rise.

In a Facebook post Saturday night, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., said he couldn’t vote for the bill, stressing a need “to take our time and to get this right.” He joins GOP Rep. John Katko, from a closely divided district in upstate New York, who cited inadequate insurance access and cost controls.

In the Senate, where Republicans hold a narrow 52-48 majority, prospects for the GOP bill also were uncertain as both moderates and conservatives criticized it.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she would not vote for the measure without additional changes to provide more aid to older Americans. She also

wants an improved proposal that would cover more Americans and offer better Medicaid benefits than the current GOP plan. She joins at least four other GOP senators in opposing the bill after conservative Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas said Sunday he wouldn’t vote for it as is.

Sens. Dean Heller of Nevada, Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky also are opposed.

“I cannot vote for any bill that keeps premiums rising,” Cruz said.

Separately, Ryan said he also expected the House to make changes to Trump’s proposed budget, which calls for a boost to military spending but big-time cuts in domestic programs.

Trump’s plan, for instance, would cut $5.8 billion from the National Institutes of Health, an 18 percent drop for the $32 billion agency that funds much of the nation’s research into what causes different diseases and what it will take to treat them.

Ryan said Congress was proud to have passed the Cures Act last year, which calls for additional NIH money for “breakthrough discoveries on cancer and other diseases,” so he expects the proposed NIH cut to be revised.

“I would say, this is the very, very beginning of the budget process,” he said.

“We are encouraged that we’re seeing an increase in defense because we think our military has been hollowed out. But I will say that NIH is something that’s particularly popular in Congress. ... So, that is something that I think in Congress you’ll see probably some changes.”

Tillerson lauds China-U.S. contacts in meeting with leader Xi

BEIJING – The U.S. is looking forward to the first meeting between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Sunday, on the final day of a swing through Asia dominated by concerns over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.

In talks with Xi in Beijing, Tillerson said Trump places a “very high value” on communications with the Chinese president.

Trump looks forward to “the opportunity of a visit in the future,” Tillerson said, in an apparent reference to unconfirmed reports of plans for the two leaders to meet in Florida next month.

Although few details of his talks have been released, Tillerson appeared to strike a cordial tone during his meetings in Beijing, in contrast to Trump’s tough talk on Chinese eco-

nomic competition during his presidential campaign.

Xi told Tillerson that China considered his meetings Saturday with Foreign Minister Wang Yi and top diplomat Yang Jiechi to have been productive and constructive.

“Both [Trump] and I believe that we need to make joint efforts to advance China-U.S. cooperation, and we believe that we can make sure the relationship will move ahead in a constructive fashion in the new era,” Xi said.

Tillerson’s Beijing visit followed his remarks in South Korea on Friday that pre-emptive military action against North Korea might be necessary if the threat from its weapons program reaches a level “that we believe requires action.”

China, the North’s biggest source of diplomatic support and economic assistance, hasn’t responded directly to those comments, although Beijing repeatedly has called for all sides to

take steps to reduce tensions.

China has agreed reluctantly to U.N. Security Council resolutions sanctioning North Korea, but is adamantly opposed to measures that might bring about a collapse of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s regime.

Beijing fears Kim’s fall would send waves of refugees into northeastern China and see South Korean and American forces taking up positions along its border.

Beijing’s patience with Pyongyang appears to be growing thin, however. Last month, China potentially deprived Kim’s regime of a crucial source of foreign currency by banning imports of North Korean coal for the rest of the year.

On Sunday, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he and his advisers discussed North Korea before returning to Washington from a weekend at his private club in Florida. On that subject, Trump said: “He’s acting badly. He’s acting very, very badly.”

The Class 4A Boys Basketball State Finals ended late Saturday night at Carver Arena in Peoria when Whitney Young outscored Simeon, 10-0, in overtime for a 60-50 victory.

That came on the heels of Bolingbrook’s 70-66 win over Fremd in the third-place game. Fremd gave Young a good battle in Friday’s semifinals before falling, 53-47, and Bolingbrook did likewise against Simeon. The Raiders rallied to lead, 40-39, early in the fourth quarter before the Wolverines went on another run and prevailed, 60-50.

If those four were not the best teams in the state’s largest class, they were among the best. Several others – we will put Joliet West and Joliet Central in this mix – could have shown well had they made it to state, but the final four as it existed was excellent.

Rob Brost, who has coached Bolingbrook to 201 victories in his 10 years at the helm, talked Saturday night about his team finishing third for a second time in three seasons.

“I told the guys after the game that I thought we could be pretty good this year,” he said. “But if you had told me we would win the Decatur [Thanksgiving] Tournament, the Hinsdale Central [Christmas] Tournament, conference [Southwest Prairie], be regional, sectional and supersectional champions and finish third in the state, that we’d have three All-Staters and be ranked No. 1 for seven weeks, all of that was going to happen, I would have thought that’s pretty crazy.”

Yet the Raiders indeed did accomplish all of that.

The Raiders were anything but that. As talented as they were, with quality players at every position, they do not finish as one of two teams in 4A to win its final game if not for the way they shared the wealth and did not care about personal glory.

It was not only Bolingbrook, of course, that made this a memorable boys basketball season in the Joliet area. Think back to Christmas. That’s when Joliet Central beat previously unbeaten Wheaton Warrenville South, 50-42, for the championship of the State Farm Classic in Bloomington. WWS did not lose again until the sectionals.

fifth place. Three of the top four seeds lost in the quarterfinals at Pontiac, and a West-Curie matchup was one many observers had been counting on seeing in the championship game.

Central lost to Bolingbrook, 60-55, on Jan. 17 as the Raiders finished the game on a 10-0 run. West faced eventual state champion Whitney Young on Jan. 21 at Glenbard East and fell, 73-64.

But if the Tigers had not shot 14 of 40 from the free-throw line, and missed their last 11, that outcome might have been different.

Central lost to West, 51-49, on Feb. 18 and, 64-62, in the sectional semifinals, both games as competitive as the scores suggest. In the sectional final, Bolingbrook beat West, 78-66, but even with a 20-2 Raiders run in the second half, it was a two-point game with two minutes left.

Add in some of the things teams such as Lincoln-Way East, Minooka and Romeoville accomplished, and all in all, this season is a keeper for our area.

We haven’t had a champion in the state’s largest class in nearly 40 years, but fueled by Bolingbrook finishing third in two of the past three seasons, the feeling is that sort of celebration may not be far off.

Lewis’ upset bid falls short against Ohio State

That’s all that separated the No. 2 ranked Ohio State and No. 7 Lewis University men’s volleyball teams.

Talent is spread out more evenly across the nation this year. Any team can pull off an upset, and teams continue to move up and down the AVCA and Off the Block Media rankings. After falling to No. 6 UCLA and USC last weekend, Lewis had a chance to take down one of the top teams.

The Flyers clawed back from a two-game deficit and outscored the Buckeyes, 109-103, in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association home match. With Lewis up, 14-13, in Game 5, Ohio State scored three consecutive points to stop the upset and pick up a 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 14-25, 1614, victory.

Saturday’s match proved that Lewis can compete with the best teams in the nation. The Flyers improved on their weaknesses from the California trip and have continued to get better throughout the season.

There is one area that still needs work, however.

“We had opportunities. We have to finish when we create those, and we’re not finishing,” Lewis coach Dan Friend said. “That’s kind of been our M.O. Our ability to turn the corner on that over the next three weeks will be our ability to take the next step in the postseason, past the MIVA tournament and into the NCAA tournament.

“We did some really nice things tonight. We battled. We competed. Ultimately, you miss a serve. You don’t connect at the end. All of the sudden, it’s the flip of the game. They didn’t earn it. We kind of handed it to them at the end. We have to be a little bit better in those situations.”

One player could not have played any better for the Flyers (17-6, 10-3 MIVA). Ohio State did not have an answer for Ryan Coenen. After struggling against McKendree, the redshirt freshman outplayed the reigning AVCA National Player of the Year, Nicholas Szerszen.

Szerszen did have a good showing with 18 kills and 11 digs, but Coenen ended the night with 22 kills, a .500 hitting percentage, four aces, five digs and eight blocks (one solo).

With Lewis up, 12-9, in Game 4, Coenen and junior middle Danny Mauer combined to block Szerszen. The next play, the duo roofed the outside twice, the second time going for a point.

The entire gym went crazy for every play as Lewis displayed what type of team it could be.

“It wasn’t just the blocks when Szerszen was hitting on the right side,” Coenen said. “Mitch (Perinar) had a couple of great blocks. Trevor (Weiskircher) had some awesome kills. (Michael) Simmons had some digs. It was just deafening in here. At that point, we were all just acting like fools. Running around and trying to get the energy up. We realized that we were capable of hanging with them and that we could take this match.”

Lewis was able to hang with the Buckeyes because the Flyers outhit them, .281 to .266, outserved them, 108, in aces and outblocked them, 13-7.

Sophomore Matt Yoshimoto had a strong night with 37 assists, three kills, nine digs and a block. Redshirt sophomore Mitch Perinar chipped in 10 kills, two aces, five digs and four blocks (one solo), and senior Trevor

Weiskircher had six kills, two aces and five digs.

Middles Danny Mauer (six blocks) and Jacob Schmiegelt (five kills, three blocks) had strong blocking nights, and libero Michael Simmons had a solid showing. He passed and defended well with nine digs against one of the best serving and hardest hitting teams in the country.

Across the board, Saturday was a big improvement from last weekend.

“California exposed a lot of things that we needed to work on,” Simmons said. “I think we had a good week of practice, which set us in a good spot for this weekend. We learned a lot about our team in California. We learned how to manage balls and put the ball in the right spot at the right time. Just playing defense as a group and not as individuals.”

The last piece to the Flyers’ success will be finishing. Lewis has five matches left, three being against MIVA teams where they can work on

improving that before the MIVA tournament.

The Flyers can outhit, outblock and outserve other teams. Now they need to focus on executing at the most crucial parts of the match.

“A lot of it is execution,” Coenen said. “It’s tough to bring energy when you’re not executing and doing the things that you’re supposed to. I think if things aren’t going in our favor and someone makes a big play, you have to feed off of that. It just takes one guy. If everyone buys in and does what they’re supposed to and gets excited off of that one point, you go from there.”

“I feel like we get into midgame lulls, and we need to figure out how to get over those and not let them get on runs,” Simmons said. “We need to side out after one point. We have to mentally be in that state of mind that ‘I’m not going to let this team get another one on us,’ and move on from that play.”

NEW LENOX – With an IHSA record crowd of 3,947 in attendance and thousands more watching on the IHSA Network, Providence Catholic closer Matt Trzesnewski looked into senior catcher Jim Jeffries for the sign.

Leading Mundelein, 10-3, in the bottom of the seventh inning of last season’s Class 4A state championship game, the Celtics needed one more out to create history. When Mundelein’s Ryan Fairweather hit a liner at shortstop Jackson Stulas, the Celtics completed their third consecutive Class 4A state championship.

In the 77-year history of the IHSA state baseball tournament, no school had ever won more than two state titles in succession.

“In October, we were finally able to take a family vacation, to Disneyland, of course,” Providence coach Mark Smith said during a recent practice. “I was watching the Cubs-Indians Game 7, and when Rajai Davis hit the game-tying home run, for the first time it really hit me what my boys accomplished. I realized how difficult it is to close out an elimination game. Twenty-one consecutive times, over three years, we won elimination games. I have been so blessed to have been able to coach such an unbelievable group of winners. I will never forget them.”

Stulas, Jeffries and Trzesnewski, – as well as Mike Madej, Zach Pych, Jackson Dvorak, Connor Creed, Matt Waznis, Kevin Fitzgerald, Tom Kelly, Connor Hilty and Noah O’Brien – have moved on to college. Class 4A state championship game-winning left-handed pitcher Tyler Zarembka (7-2, 1.60 ERA) and senior righthander Kurt Dankovich (4-0, 2.76 ERA) return. Zarembka will be lost until May, however, because of an offseason injury.

After the heavy graduation losses suffered by the history-making Celtics, there is open competition for most starting positions. Dankovich looks to hold down the No. 1 spot on Smith’s pitching staff.

“I want to be the leader for our staff and do everything I can do to help our talented young pitchers,” Dankovich said. “The key to our success the last three seasons has been the family tradition we have here at Providence. We have to continue that tradition with this new group of Celtics. If we can accomplish that, we believe we can achieve anything.”

“I could not have been happier with my junior season, resulting in a good year at the plate and culminating with the historic state champion-

ship,” Hunniford said. “I have worked really hard in the offseason with hopes of having even a better season at the plate in 2017.

“We can’t wait for our home opener March 20 with Joliet Central. It will be great to open up at home, finally.

Anything is possible is the feeling we have here at Providence.”

Junior first baseman Matt Swanson looks to provide much-needed pop in Smith’s lineup.

“Once again, the family we have established here at Providence is of the utmost importance,” Swanson said.

“I hope to have a big year at the plate and provide us with solid defense at first base.”

The Zarembka injury was tough, as he was receiving numerous college offers after his outstanding junior season.

“I’m OK with the injury,” Zarembka said. “I’m confident I can get back

and pitch this season. We have a number of quality young arms this season.

With the pitch-count rule in effect, it is important for us to have an abundance of quality arms. Our lineup 1 through 10 is strong and will score runs. I’m confident we will have a successful season.”

With the historic three-peat in the rearview mirror, the new-look Celtics look to create new memories for Smith.

“We are very young, but I am confident by May we will be pretty good,” Smith said. “We might struggle early trying to find ourselves, but we want to be playing our best ball by state tournament time.

“Maybe we can surprise some people in the tournament. Our conference (Chicago Catholic Blue) is as strong as ever, and our overall strong schedule will prepare us to be playing our best baseball in June.”

Wagner’s big game sends Michigan past Louisville

INDIANAPOLIS – Moe Wagner gritted his teeth, pumped his fist and stuck out his mouthpiece to the crowd’s delight Sunday.

A few minutes later, the tough German took a couple more bows – first on the baseline in front of Michigan’s bench, then with the rest of his teammates near midcourt.

Suddenly, the often overlooked 6-foot-11 forward was the well-deserved center of attention.

Wagner scored a career-high 26 points, made the basket that spurred Michigan’s furious second-half rally and capped the day with a 3-pointer to give the Wolverines the lead for good as they knocked off second-seeded Louisville, 73-69, to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2014.

“He’s got the mentality where he wants to make the play,” said Derrick Walton Jr., who drove in for Michigan’s final basket with 29 seconds left. “He just makes the right play at all times. He has the calls to make the big plays, so we feed off him because he’s not afraid of anything.”

Wagner’s fearlessness has played a big part in Michigan’s improbable late-season run.

In late February, Michigan was just 19-11 and trying to keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive. Since then, it has won seven straight, six coming after a frightening plane accident on their way to the Big Ten Tournament.

So it seemed only fitting that the emotion, poise and momentum Michigan mustered over these past few weeks would help them fight their way off the ropes. Again.

Trailing, 45-36, with 16:09 to play, Wagner made a layup that started a 17-6 run to give Michigan its first lead since the opening minutes of the game. When Wagner knocked down a 3-pointer with 6:39 to go to break a 55-55 tie, the Wolverines never trailed again.

Afterward, Michigan’s players celebrated by jumping around near midcourt, then walking next to the pep band and pumping their fists toward yellow-clad fans as the school fight song boomed.

Despite going 3-3 in their previous six games, Louisville (25-9) came into Sunday as a small favorite.

Coach Rick Pitino was 3-1 in headto-head matchups with Beilein and the Cardinals had made it to the Sweet 16

in each of their previous four NCAA appearances.

But after sitting out last year’s tourney because of a school-imposed postseason ban, the Cardinals’ hopes were doused largely because of Wagner’s ability to repeatedly get to the basket.

That was all it took in a matchup between the two teams that played for a national championship four years ago.

Donovan Mitchell finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists to lead Louisville. Deng Adel had 16 points and Mangok Mathiang added 13.

Not much went as expected, though.

Louisville’s pressure defense forced only six Michigan turnovers and the Cardinals wound up just 5 of 20 on 3-pointers.

Walton had 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists despite going 3 of 13 from the field. And two days after making a school record 16 3-pointers in a tourney game, the Wolverines were just 6 of 17.

Instead, they pounded the ball inside to D.J. Wilson, who had 17 points, three blocks and two steals, and the gritty Wagner, who spent most of Friday’s first-round win in foul trouble.

On Sunday, he used his fresh legs to do the dirty work so well that the usually reliable, quiet sophomore screamed in celebration.

“We always believed in ourselves,” Wagner said. “I just said to Coach B, we only shot six 3s today and we won.

So it’s awesome. We played gritty basketball, and I think we can be proud of that.”

NCAA TOURNAMENT: KANSAS 90, MICHIGAN STATE 70

Jackson’s strong second half lifts Kansas past Spartans

The Associated Press TULSA, Okla. – Everything about Josh Jackson’s demeanor screamed this game was personal, from the backand-forth chirping with childhood friend Miles Bridges to his emphatic late-game dunk and celebration.

Playing against the school he grew up cheering for, Jackson channeled that emotion into a dominating performance to help top-seeded Kansas advance to the Sweet 16 for a second straight year with a 90-70 victory over Michigan State on Sunday.

The standout freshman scored 14 of his 23 points in the second half, finishing 9 of 16 from the field and ousting a Spartans team from the NCAA Tournament that he very nearly joined before signing with the Jayhawks.

“I knew it was going to be a fun game before it even started,” Jackson said. “So, it was just really fun to be able to go out there and play against those guys and I’m really proud to see them here and having success.”

Frank Mason III added 20 points for the top-seeded Jayhawks, who have advanced to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament in nine of coach Bill Self’s 14 seasons.

But it was Jackson who shook off misses on his first three shot attempts – including an embarrassing failed dunk attempt – who shined the most in his second straight dominating performance in the tournament.

And he did so while matched up for much of the game against Bridges, his former elementary school friend in Michigan.

“It’s always good when going

against Josh,” Bridges said. “It gets a little physical at times. We compete every time we play against each other.

He’s a great player, so it’s always good playing against him.”

Bridges finished with 22 points to lead Michigan State, doing so despite leaving the game briefly in the first half with a hip pointer before returning.

Nick Ward also finished in double figures with 13 points and Joshua Langford had 10 for the Spartans, who saw their lower-seeded NCAA tournament magic fail against the high-powered Jayhawks who shot 53.1 percent (34 of 64) in the win.

“Josh is a hell of a player,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. “... We wanted to beat his brains in today. I’m sure the feeling was mutual. But there’s respect, and respect means there will be a

friendship when it’s over.”

Michigan State entered Sunday following a dominating win over Miami in the opening round, a victory that improved the school to 14-10 as a lower seed in the NCAA tournament under Izzo – the most wins by a lower-seeded school in tournament history.

At Tulsa, Oklahoma, Johnathan Motley had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 3 seed Baylor defeated No. 11 seed Southern California on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Terry Maston scored 19 points, King McClure added 17, and Manu Lecomte scored all 12 of his points in the final five minutes for the Bears (27-7), who advanced to play Duke or South Carolina in the Sweet 16.

Chimezie Metu scored 28 points, and Bennie Boatwright added 16 for USC (2610), which was trying to make its first Sweet 16 appearance since 2007. The Trojans had rallied from second-half deficits to win their first two NCAA tournament games. A four-point play by Lecomte put the Bears up, 69-67. Lecomte, who hadn’t

scored the entire game, scored eight points in 45 seconds to put the Bears up, 73-67, and Baylor led the rest of the way.

SOUTH CAROLINA 88, DUKE 81: At Greenville, South Carolina, Sindarius Thornwell had 24 points, Chris Silva scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and seventh-seeded South Carolina stunned No. 2 seed Duke on Sunday night to advance to its first Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament’s expanded bracket.

The Gamecocks (24-10) trailed by 10 points early in the second half after one of its coldest shooting stretches of the season to start. But behind Thornwell’s outside shooting and Silva’s dominance underneath, South Carolina rallied to win two NCAA games for the first time in 44 years.

The Gamecocks rushed to their fans when things were over, celebrating one of the biggest wins in program history.

Duke (28-9) was trying to reach the round of 16 for the sixth time in eight seasons. The Blue Devils, though, could not surmount South Carolina’s stifling defense. Leading scorer Luke Kennard had his second straight subpar shooting game, finishing 1 of 6 for 11 points before fouling out.

Comeback attempt should have been story for Wildcats, not officiating VIEWS Rick Morrissey Before we get to the bigger picture, the one of Northwestern finally kicking down the NCAA tournament door, let’s look at a smaller one that people naturally have made into the size of an Imax screen.

The Wildcats were the victims of a terrible non-call Saturday by officials who missed an obvious goaltending violation on a shot by center Dererk Pardon. The NCAA later acknowledged what everybody saw live and later on replay: that Gonzaga’s Zach Collins had put his hand through the rim to block that shot.

I don’t know whether it cost Northwestern the chance to win the second-round game, and neither does anyone else. But if that play is how Wildcats fans are going to remember this season, then welcome to the big time, folks. You’ll be like every other fan base that thinks it got jobbed somehow.

“In my heart, do I think if Dererk gets that call and we cut it to three, we have a great chance to win? Yes,’’ coach Chris Collins said.

But you can make the argument that Collins’ ensuing technical cost NU just as dearly as the missed call.

If the coach didn’t lose his cool after the error, didn’t give the Zags two made technical free throws, perhaps the ’Cats would have made another defensive stand against Gonzaga. If so, wouldn’t Northwestern have been in the exact same spot it was before the blown call – down 63-58 with a chance to cut the lead to three points with a great chance to win? Yes. But with the technical, the ’Cats were down seven.

It’s too bad the game has been reduced to this controversy. The officiating shouldn’t have been the story. The ’Cats put themselves in a huge hole Saturday and then, instead of completely caving in, they valiantly fought back and made a game of it.

What an amazing response from a school that had never tasted March Madness before.

Think about it. Northwestern, which hadn’t been in the NCAA tournament, wins its first game and then scares the bejabbers out of a No. 1 seed rather than dying the quick death most everyone thought it would. You can’t teach that sort of resolve, and it’s the most impressive thing about the ’Cats. For the longest time, theirs was a downtrodden program, and a history

like that doesn’t just go away because they happened to find some good players for a change.

Northwestern’s lot in life had been compared with the Cubs’, which wasn’t completely fair because the Cubs were the Michelangelos of losing before they won the World Series last season. There were seasons when the North Siders had the talent to win it all but didn’t, often because of a pervasive feeling that they had no business doing so. That wafted throughout the clubhouse and Wrigley Field. So when some poor soul reached out for a foul ball during a playoff game, the team reacted as if a nerve agent had been released upon the populace.

These ’Cats saw no reason why they shouldn’t win. They expected to win, even when history seemed to be snickering at them. The players believed, and Collins believed. The students started believing, and then a bunch of J-school grads got their diplomas framed.

Maybe Illinois grads can soon follow suit. Over the weekend, the Illini hired Oklahoma State’s Brad Underwood as their coach. From a distance, it looks like an inspired move. He was hugely successful at Stephen F. Austin, got Oklahoma State to the NCAA tournament in his one season in Still-

water, and now comes to Champaign hoping to put some life in a decidedly beige program. He was a longtime assistant at Western Illinois. Does that mean he can recruit the Chicago area?

I don’t know. A skeptical everyone waits to find out.

Northwestern should be very good next season. Bryant McIntosh, Scottie Lindsey, Vic Law and Pardon will be back. There are two ways to win in the NCAA tournament: have one or more gifted players who will go to the NBA after their freshmen seasons; or have talented, but not too talented, players who can grow together to the point where they are very dangerous by the time they’re juniors and seniors.

Northwestern is in the latter camp, a good camp to be in.

Illinois is in neither camp, but perhaps Underwood will find the answer that has been missing for too long in Champaign. Lots of people are excited about his hire. Lots of Illini fans are excited every time a new coach is hired. Winning will tell the only story that matters.

Nobody knows that better than Northwestern now.

INDIANAPOLIS – Bam Adebayo had a double-double and swatted away the final shot Sunday as Kentucky sent Wichita State to yet another second-round heartbreak, 65-62, in the South region.

The youngest team in the NCAA tournament grew up in the closing minutes.

Adebayo had 13 points and 10 rebounds. De’Aaron Fox had 14 points, including a late steal and dunk. Malik Monk blocked a shot and made a pair of free throws in the final 13 seconds.

Adebayo clinched it by blocking Landry Shamet’s 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Yes, Kentucky’s freshman trio did it all. Wham, Bam, move on ’Cats (31-5), right into the Sweet 16 for the seventh time in nine years. And wipe away tears again, Shockers (31-5).

Dorsey also tied the game with a 3 with 1:45 remaining on the way to 27 points before teammate Dillon Brooks took a charge on the other end for Oregon (31-5).

With Oregon’s season on the brink of an early NCAA tournament exit, Brooks found his shooting stroke as he typically does and scored 19 points despite a 7-for-20 shooting day. Dorsey made 9 of 10 shots with four 3-pointers.

Rhode Island nearly scrapped and hustled its way into the next round, with Stanford Robinson matching his career high of 21 points as the Rams (25-10) had their nine-game winning streak snapped to end the season.

In 46 plate appearances, Moncada owns a .317/.391/.683 slash line with 13 RBIs. He’s tied for the team lead in homers with Cody Asche and Tyler Saladino and is 10 for 22 with three homers, four doubles and 11 RBIs in his past seven games after a slow start.

TEMPE, Ariz. – White Sox manager Rick Renteria and pitching coach Don Cooper want to see Carlos Rodon take the next step.

For them, that would be more efficiency, as in fewer pitches and deeper outings.

“He tends to get a very elevated pitch count early,” Renteria said.

“Five innings, he’s already at 100 pitches sometimes. At six innings, he’s at 110 or 115. We want him to become more efficient, trust his stuff a bit more.”

that begins two weeks from Monday. He struck out five, including Mike Trout looking, and walked one over four scoreless innings – the only hit a cue-shot single through the right side of the infield

Rodon, who threw 65 pitches (38 for strikes), didn’t throw his slider for a called Carlos Rodon t h i r d s t r i k e t o Trout where he wanted and had more 3-1 counts than he would care to see, but overall, this was a strong first outing.

“We mixed in a little bit of everything,” Rodon said. “Mostly fastball, slider, but we threw some change-ups and some cut-

ters.”

The plan is for Rodon to get another start Friday against the A’s, and then March 29, the Sox’s last day in Arizona.

The hope when the season begins is to get those pitch counts down.

“His ball has explosive life that moves on both sides of the plate,” Renteria said. “We want him to attack the strike zone, let it do its stuff, and maybe we can use him deeper in the ballgame.”

“Nine innings, 90 pitches would be awesome,” Rodon said last week. “Everyone wants to do that. But that doesn’t happen all the time. I think of it in innings.

Get six, seven innings under the belt, preferably leave with the lead and let the bullpen take over.”

Newman skips late pit stop, stuns NASCAR field in Phoenix

The Associated Press AVONDALE, Ariz. – A big gamble in the desert heat ended a long victory drought for Ryan Newman.

When just about everybody else decided to take a tire-changing pit stop in the final few laps Sunday, Newman figured he’d be going in with them.

His crew chief, Luke Lambert, thought otherwise.

It was a decision that earned Newman a victory in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race, ending his 127-race winless streak.

“Just a heck of a gutsy call by Luke Lambert,” Newman said. “It’s his first win as a crew chief in the cup series, and I think making a gutsy call like that makes it that much more special for him.”

While the leaders were in the pits, Newman moved from seventh to first and for the final two laps held off Kyle Larson, the second-place finisher for the third straight race.

Kyle Busch, the leader for nearly all of the final stage of the race, was third on a day when the temperature soared to 97 degrees at Phoenix International Raceway.

Like nearly all the rest of the field, Larson and Busch went to the pits on the late caution caused when Joey Logano’s car blew a right tire and slammed into the wall six laps from the finish.

He gave Chevrolet its first victory of the season and ended a 112-race losing streak for Richard Childress Racing.

“I can’t say enough about what it means,” Newman said.

When the caution ended, two laps separated him from the win.

“You’re on old tires. It’s really easy to screw it up,” Newman said. “You’ve got to get your tires cleaned off right,

you’ve to get a good launch, you’ve got to run through the gear box right, and then you’ve got to hold everybody off.”

Larson, with two new tires on his Chevrolet, came out of the late pit stop with two new tires ahead of Busch’s Toyota and had the best chance to catch Newman.

“I thought he was going to be all over me,” Newman said. “I don’t think he could get going as good as he wanted

to.”

Larson blamed his failure to get that victory three races in a row on “little mistakes or inexperience or whatever you want to call it” Once again, Logano’s misfortune foiled Busch, who was leading up until that tire blew.

Last week, Logano’s car knocked Busch’s into the wall on the final stretch in Las Vegas. That led Busch to storm down pit row and throw a punch at Logano, creating a scuffle with the crews and a meeting for the drivers with NASCAR officials Friday.

Busch took the lead Sunday with a quick pit stop during a caution flag and led for 113 laps before heading to the pits after Logano’s crash.

The series of runner-up finishes gave Larson the Cup points lead, the first time Chip Ganassi Racing has led the points race this late in the season since 2002.

Logano won the first stage and Chase Elliott the second in NASCAR’s new three-stage system.

Elliott dominated the second stage but lost the lead after Matt Kenseth, like Logano, blew a right front tire and slammed into the wall on the 193rd lap of the 314-lap race. In the ensuing pit stop, Busch got out quicker than Elliott to take the lead.

Blown tires were a common sight on the hot pavement, but Newman was able to negotiate the treacherous surface when it mattered most.

CHICAGO – Jonathan Toews scored twice and Richard Panik and Artemi Panarin each had one in a span of 3:02 in the third period to erase Colorado’s two-goal lead and rally the Blackhawks past the Avalanche, 6-3, on Sunday night for their fifth straight win.

Patrick Kane scored his team-leading 32nd goal and Marcus Kruger added an empty-netter for the Hawks, which won for the 17th time in its last 20 games to pull seven points ahead of slumping second-place Minnesota in the Central Division. The Wild dropped their fifth straight, 5-4 to Winnipeg on Sunday.

With the Hawks trailing, 3-1, Toews tipped in Kane’s bouncing shot at 10:17 of the third period to cut it to 3-2. The goal withstood a video review that showed Toews may have been offside.

Panik rifled in a loose puck from the slot 17 seconds later to tie it at 3.

Panarin put the Hawks ahead, 4-3, just 17 seconds after that on a shot from the right circle that deflected in off the shoulder of Colorado goalie Jeremy Smith.

Toews stretched it to 5-3 with his 20th goal on a wrist shot from the left circle with 6:41 to go.

Mikhail Grigorenko scored twice and Sven Andrighetto had a goal for the last-place Avalanche.

Hawks backup Scott Darling stopped 22 shots to extend his winning streak to six games.

The 27-year-old Smith made 28 saves in his seventh NHL appearance and sixth start. His only win was on Feb. 25 when Colorado beat Buffalo, 5-3.

The 22-year-old Grigorenko, a scratch in Detroit on Saturday, ended an eight-game drought with his eighth and ninth goals. Andrighetto, ac-

Kane opened the scoring at 4:33, ripping a feed from Panarin past Smith high on the stick side to complete a 2-on-1 break.

Grigorenko tied it at 1 at 8:14 when he fooled Darling from a scramble in front with a low shot to the lower right corner.

Grigorenko struck again with 3:24 left in the period to make it 2-1. He backed in Brent Seabrook as he moved in 1-on-1 against the veteran defenseman, then popped an off-balance shot that clanked off the right post and in.

Darling made a point-blank pad stop on Mikko Rantanen with 7:05 left in the second, then a close-in glove save on Joe Colborne about two minutes later to keep the margin at one goal.

But with 3:35 left the period, Andrighetto cut across the crease unchecked in front of the Hawks defensemen Trevor van Riemsdyk and Brian Campbell and neatly tipped Mark Barberio’s drive over Darling’s glove to increase Colorado’s lead to 3-1.

MALIBU, CALIFORNIA – American Tortoise Rescue in Malibu, California, is calling on the pet industry, reptile wholesalers, craigslist.org and private breeders to stop the breeding and sale of giant tortoises commonly called sulcatas.

Geochelone sulcata is a hardy and personable species of tortoise. Native to sub-Saharan Africa, it became part of the lucrative pet trade during the 1990s.

Hatchlings are extremely cute making them one of the most commonly purchased pet tortoises in North America, usually as an impulse buy.

Unknown to the unwary buyer, however, is that sulcatas are the third largest species of tortoise in the world weighing up to 200 pounds, often attaining a large and destructive size in a short period of time. Adult female sulcatas can easily produce 50 to 100 eggs a year. It is not unusual to see hundreds of hatchlings for sale at reptile shows that sell for anywhere between $100 and $1,000.

Worse, the sulcata, which requires sunshine and warm weather throughout the year, is sold in all 50 states, many of which suffer freezing temperatures.

They do not hibernate, which means an owner must provide a large outdoor house with heat throughout cold winter months.

A sulcata is strong and aggressive and can easily move furniture and damage house or apartment. They eat all the grass and plants and dig massive holes outside much to a homeowner’s dismay.

Rescues typically receive distressed calls from owners who want to get rid of their sulcatas, most often when it reaches 50 pounds or 10 years of age. Many owners assume that when the tortoise becomes a problem, zoos will take them. zoos are not interested in cast-off pets.

Bladder pain origin remains mystery consider the restriction of spicy foods and citrus. The second step would be to consider behavioral modification to decrease the frequency of urination. One study, published in the Journal of Urology, showed that diet and behavioral changes decreased symptoms in 45 percent of patients.

Physical therapy with a therapist who specializes in interstitial cystitis can relieve some of the pain in the pelvic region by working on tender areas and increasing muscle stability in the lower abdomen. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Urology showed a 59 percent decrease in symptoms compared to 26 percent who did general therapeutic massage.

Amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant with multiple uses beyond depression, has potential as well. In a 2010 Journal of Urology study, the drug -- given at 50 milligrams -- was shown to decrease symptoms in 55 percent of patients with interstitial cystitis. The problem is that many patients cannot tolerate the side effects of this dose, so I would consider doses of 10 milligrams to 20 milligrams.

Pentosan polysulfate sodium, which seems to protect the lining of the bladder, may help as well, and the sedating antihistamine hydroxyzine can aid patients who have symptoms of pain and frequency of urination during the night.

While interstitial cystitis is not a well-understood disease, it is certainly a diagnosable condition.

Dear Doctor: What can be done about interstitial cystitis, or bladder pain syndrome? I’m told there’s no cause or cure, and that some doctors don’t even believe it exists.

Dear Reader: Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition of the bladder that’s five times more common in women than men. Patients with interstitial cystitis have pain, pressure or bladder spasms, with symptoms worsening when the bladder is full and improving after voiding. The condition also causes an increase in urinary frequency and urgency.

Because people with these symptoms need to use the bathroom frequently, the condition is extremely disruptive to their lives. Further, these symptoms disrupt sleep in 70 percent of patients, creating feelings of fatigue.

Now let’s look at the cause: a disruption in the cellular lining of the bladder. This disruption allows urinary irritants, or chemicals, to penetrate through the lining of the bladder, affecting both the nerves and muscle of the bladder. The nerve irritation can send feedback to the central nerves of the spine. The spinal cord sends signals to the bladder and pelvis relaying pain information, perpetuating the pain in a back-andforth cycle.

Doctors don’t have a clear understanding of the inciting event that causes this inflammation. Interstitial cystitis may originate from a bladder infection, or from bladder irritants, such as caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods and citrus. I’ve seen enough patients with this syndrome to know that interstitial cystitis, or as some call it, chronic bladder pain, is very much real. That said, other causes for the symptoms must be ruled out, requiring urine tests to check for infection or even directly visualizing the bladder with cystoscopy. The first treatment step is to eliminate behaviors and foods/drinks that irritate the bladder, meaning stopping all consumption of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco. You can also

Three spades was game-forcing, promising a long suit. North liked his maximum with three aces, so control-bid four clubs. (With an unappealing hand, he would have settled for four spades.) South used Roman Key Card Blackwood and jumped to six spades when he learned that his partner had two aces and the spade king or three aces.

Things looked grim, but hoping for the best, South ran the spade queen. When it won, declarer realized that if trumps were 2-2, he was safe; but if West had started with three trumps, South had to find him with exactly 3-3-3-4 distribution and the club king.

Declarer played a heart to the ace, ruffed a heart, crossed to the spade ace (bad news), ruffed another heart, cashed his other two diamond tricks and exited with a spade to West’s king. Good news -- West had to lead a club away from the king. South won with his queen and claimed his very lucky slam.
