Lincoln-Way D-210 board to consider selling land

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The Lincoln-Way School District 210 board will consider approving the sale of two properties and at least one of them will be for a lower price than when it was originally bought.

On the agenda for Thursday’s meeting are resolutions to approve the sale of about 78 acres at 13125 W. Smith Road, Manhattan Township, and 100 acres at 16460-16462 W. Manhattan Road, Manhattan.

Superintendent Scott Tingley said the sale of the land will help replenish the fund balances of the district, which is struggling financially.

“The money will immediately be de-

posited in our fund balance and will help to replenish those balances,” Tingley said.

The board approved selling the land in November, and the minimum bids for each property were met.

The Manhattan Park District plans to buy the Smith Road property for $701,500, and Spiess Farms plans to buy the Manhattan property for $1.25 million.

The board bought acreage of the Manhattan Road property for $2.47 million in 2007 and $2.5 million in 2008 from Priscilla Lantka, a trustee under the Stanley and Violet Cooper trusts, according to Will County real estate records.

The district bought the land for a potential fifth high school to accommodate growth in student population that did not occur.

The district opened new high schools – Lincoln-Way North and Lincoln-Way West – in 2008 and 2009 to also accommodate growth, but the board voted in 2015 to close North because of declining enrollment and financial issues.

Not on the agenda Thursday is the 71.9 acres at 191st Street and Harlem Avenue that the district hopes to sell. The site originally was intended to be the location for Lincoln-Way North.

Woodman’s Market met the minimum bid at $4.5 million but Tingley said district officials still are working with the buyer and have not yet come to an agreement.

In 2014, district officials tried to sell the property for a higher price at $5.9 million.

Plainfield teen dies in Kendall County crash

tscott@kendallcountynow.com PLAINFIELD – A 16-year-old girl from Plainfield was killed Tuesday evening in a single-vehicle crash in the area of Walker and Arbeiter roads in unincorporated Na-Au-Say Township, according to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

driver, also a 16-year-old girl, was being treated for her injuries by Plainfield paramedics.

The passenger, identified as Alyssa Smith, of the 2000 block of River Bend Lane, was in the vehicle and taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet by Plainfield paramedics, where she later was pronounced dead, sheriff’s police said.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash with assistance from the Illinois State Police.

Tom Hernandez, Plainfield School District 202 spokesman, said that on “behalf of District 202, we offer sincere condolences to Smith’s family and friends.”

A GoFundMe page has been created for Smith, with a goal of raising $1,000 for her family for funeral costs and other expenses.

Those vying for 3 City Council seats discuss reserve fund, police

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A bit of a debate broke out at a Wednesday night forum for the candidates running for three at-large seats on the Joliet City Council over what the city should do with its $50-million-plus reserve fund.

The reserve fund was not one of a half-dozen questions posed by the forum organizers, who focused mainly on neighborhood issues.

The forum, attended by 13 of the 15 candidates, primarily consisted of candidates offering uncontroversial answers to the questions without taking exceptions to anyone else’s answers.

But Councilwoman Jan Quillman, while answering a question about neighborhood councils, commented on another candidate’s suggestion that it was time to start using the city’s reserve fund.

“We need to have that reserve for emergencies like when we had the tornado,” Quillman said. “You have your emergency fund at home. This is our emergency fund.”

Councilwoman Brooke Hernandez Brewer had just mentioned the reserve fund ahead of Quillman as she answered a question about how the city can upgrade the Jefferson Street, Ruby Street and McDonough Street corridors.

Brewer said the city should start dipping into the $50-million plus reserve to revitalize the city.

“We’re not hurting economically,” she said. “The recession is over.”

More police?

The comments were the one point in the forum where one candidate addressed a comment made by another, although Quillman did not mention Brewer by name. But candidates did express different views on whether the city needed more police.

Two of the questions focused on whether the city should add more officers to the Neighborhood Oriented Policing Team and how to fight rising crime in ways other than hiring police.

“The bottom line is we don’t need more policemen. We need more people who are committed to our young people,” Roger Powell Sr. said.

Some candidates, however, noted that police staffing is down from pre-

vious years.

“I do believe we need to increase the number of police officers on the Joliet Police Department,” Marc Ragusa said.

“We need to make sure our police officers have the resources. We owe it to them.”

Diane Harris said police staffing is low and more officers should be hired.

On NOPT, she said, “We do need them.

There’s no question about that.”

But R. Dale Evans said, “I believe I would support social service programs that help young people before I add police.”

Don Dickinson noted his experience on the Joliet Township High School board and said, “We should work together as a community and try to get our kids involved in more things to keep them out of trouble.

Joliet: Prison trespassers will be prosecuted

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city announced Wednesday an agreement with the Illinois Department of Corrections to prosecute trespassers at the old prison on Collins Street.

The Joliet Correctional Center was vacated in 2002 and has fallen into disrepair with occasional incidents arising from people breaking in to the prison.

The agreement with the state gives the city the authority to prosecute trespassers on its own, Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said.

“It’s going to help us be more proactive,” Benton said. “It’s definitely not safe in there.”

Benton said the city wants to prevent trespassing to avoid potential danger to people who get inside the prison. The most recent incident occurred in January, when two teen girls entered the prison and one locked herself in a cell.

“That helped light the fire to get this agreement passed,” Benton said.

There is a pending trespassing case against the two teens.

In the past, Benton said, the state has not provided witnesses to prosecute in trespassing cases. The agree-

ment gives the city the authority to testify against trespassers.

Both the Department of Corrections and city police patrol the old prison.

But the city could do little when trespassers were found, City Manager Jim Hock said.

“All we could do to people is shoo them away and tell them not to come back,” Hock said.

Joliet police officers and firefighters also face hazards when they enter the prison for a rescue. Hock said the January incident was an example of why the city needs to keep out trespassers.

“The point is our fire department

had to go over there – had to find them,” Hock said. “They had to bust a hole in the hall. It took them away from other emergencies that could have happened.”

In 2013, a fire destroyed a warehouse building at the prison. The fire was believed to have been started by a trespasser.

Hock also said the city hopes prosecution of trespassers will deter people from entering the prison.

According to the city, the prison buildings are not being maintained.

As a result, floors have collapsed, walls have crumbled and roofs are failing, which creates hazards for trespassers.

Will County municipalities partner with Lewis to create business incubator

mmallory@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – A partnership with Lewis University could be the key to successful business startups and a diversified job market that Will County leaders have been looking for.

The Regional Alliance Business Incubator project will be a partnership between the university and the Des Plaines River Valley Enterprise Zone, which includes Romeoville, Joliet, Rockdale, Lockport and Will County.

The project seeks to encourage innovation and local entrepreneurs by assisting them in creating stronger and healthier businesses.

The enterprise zone board unanimously approved the first phase of the program, which includes a feasibility study. If the study yields favorable results, the alliance incubator will be housed at Lewis University’s Fitzpat-

rick House and be funded by the enterprise zone along with in-kind donations by the university.

“We talk a lot about recruiting business, but we need to be more aggressive in creating the opportunities of tomorrow,” Romeoville Mayor John Noak said.

The incubator will use a mix of educational workshops and the university’s existing intellectual, technological and material resources in hopes of creating a state-of-the-art business program. STEM-related, product-based and information technology companies are at the heart of the initiative, according to a village of Romeoville news release.

Noak said Lewis University has a well-known business faculty and all the resources to foster the growth of new businesses.

“If we could have them grow into companies with 100-plus employees and multimillion-dollar operations, we’d be way ahead of the game,” Noak said.

Lewis University President David Livingston stated in the news release that the university appreciates the enterprise zone’s assistance on the initiative, and that it shows potential for a positive economic effect on the region.

“We look forward to working with innovative entrepreneurs through the Alliance Incubator, coordinated by our Lewis University Lowell Stahl Center for Entrepreneurship and Real Estate,” he stated.

LOCAL BRIEFS Police seek information on Minooka armed robbery

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office is looking for information on an armed robbery that occurred Monday at a gas station in unincorporated Kendall County near Minooka.

Sheriff’s police said deputies were dispatched about 11:40 a.m. to a Citgo gas station in the 17000 block of Ridge Road for a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred.

Police said the clerk reported that a man entered the store armed with a handgun and demanded cash from the

register. The robber was described as African-American, in his early 20s with a medium build, and wearing a blue hoodie, black coat, blue jeans and white rimmed sunglasses with reflective lenses, police said.

The suspect left the scene in a blue Dodge Charger headed south on Ridge Road, police said. None of the customers or the clerk were injured, police said.

Teen shot in hand in Joliet

JOLIET – A 17-year-old boy told police he was shot in the hand while sitting in a parked car Tuesday night in Joliet.

The incident occurred at 8:42 p.m. in the 2700 block of Fairway Drive, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said.

“Three friends were in the car and had just backed into the driveway after

returning from a gas station on Jefferson Street,” Roechner said. “They were sitting and talking in the car when they hear four shots.”

One witness described the shooter as a black man wearing black clothing who was standing near the street to the east of the driveway, Roechner said.

The teen was struck once in the right hand and treated at the hospital for a wound that was not life-threatening.

The maroon Chevrolet Impala was struck three times, Roechner said.

Lockport high school assignment pulled for cultural insensitivity

fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A class exercise at Lockport Township High School District 205 connecting a classic play to travel bans was pulled after being deemed culturally insensitive by district officials.

A discussion prompt from a sophomore English Honors teacher on Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” attempted to make the material relevant by connecting it to an executive order from President Donald Trump restricting admission of people from several Muslim-majority countries to the U.S. The play is a dramatization of the Salem witch trials.

District 205 spokeswoman Kim Brehm said the teacher was teaching about social injustice and how identifying people who belong to certain groups can be a problem.

However, a few students who were not in the teacher’s class saw the discussion prompt and became upset. The district received complaints Friday, the day after the prompt was posted online, and investigated what occurred, she said.

Brehm said the complaints criticized the prompt for having an anti-Muslim aspect to it, but she did not have information as to what specifically that entailed.

District officials deemed the class exercise inappropriate and withdrew it. Dennis Hicks, Lockport East principal, stated in a letter to parents that the assignment was given “in conjunction with the teaching of a classic novel.”

“The very group [the teacher] was trying to advocate for was the people she ended up offending,” Brehm said.

She said the teacher apologized to her class and plans to speak with a Muslim student organization at the district.

$1 million bond set in Homer Glen gas station robbery case

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Lansing man reportedly told police he was “high on heroin” when he decided to rob a Homer Glen gas station with a shotgun Tuesday.

Robert A. Bennett, 37, has been charged with armed robbery, aggravated vehicle hijacking, attempted vehicle hijacking and aggravated battery. Judge Art Smigielski ordered Bennett Robert A. to be held in the Will Bennett County Jail on $1 million bond.

About 5:20 a.m. Tuesday, Bennett allegedly walked into Speedway, 15060 S. Bell Road, while carrying a shotgun and demanded an employee give him money from the register. When a second employee told him to leave, Bennett hit her with the barrel of the shotgun.

“He struck her face and head. She was treated at Silver Cross Hospital for injuries to the right side of her head,” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Messina said.

Bennett reportedly got $40 from the register and also a customer’s purse before leaving in a Scion that broke down at the next intersection. He approached two other vehicles on the street before returning to the gas station and stealing a 2015 Chrysler 200 from a customer, police said.

Bennett was tracked Tuesday afternoon to the Hi-Way Motel in Markham and was wearing the same clothes as the robber in surveillance footage, Messina said.

“He spoke with police, and when he was shown the video, he identified himself on it,” Messina said. “He said he was ‘high on heroin at the time.’ ... He knew he was in big trouble and would be going to prison for a long time.”

If convicted on all counts, Bennett could face up to 60 years in prison.

Messina told Smigielski that Bennett has been arrested 28 times and served prison sentences in Illinois, Indiana and Florida.

According to the Will County Sheriff’s office, Bennett also is under investigation by Oak Forest police for a similar robbery that occurred there Monday.

SHOREWOOD – The village of Shorewood Board of Trustees passed the 2017 budget during its meeting Tuesday night at Shorewood Village Hall.

Village Finance Director Anne Burkholder read through the prepared budget documents. The 2017 budget balanced with $11.98 million in revenues and expenses expected.

The biggest undertaking for the village in the coming fiscal year will be the ongoing project to change the village water source from well water to Lake Michigan water.

In preparation for the change, the village was granted home rule status in April 2015 by referendum, which allows it to find additional ways to raise revenue. Documents state that, “In January 2016, the village’s one percent Non Home Rule sales tax was replaced with a 1.75 percent Home Rule sales tax. The differential 0.75 percent is being used as a dedicated revenue source for Lake Michigan water expenses. Lake Michigan Water Fund was created and appears in this budget.”

Four areas in the village budget could be affected by the inability of the state to approve a budget.

Areas and totals that could be affected are the state income tax at $1.56 million out of the general fund, motor fuel tax at $384,000 out of the motor fuel tax fund, new user tax at $357,000 out of the general fund and personal property replacement tax at $47,500 out of the general fund.

Burkholder said that economic recovery continues, but the village wants to keep the budget conservative. Growth with new homes boomed in the early 2000s, slowed and has since rebounded, and projections for the remainder of the current fiscal year indicate sales tax revenue will exceed $4.4 million and that building permit revenues will again exceed expectations.

Commercial growth has boomed in the village as well. During the State of the Village speech Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Rick Chapman said 33 businesses were new to the Shorewood area last year, with several moving in this year, including a La Quinta Inn and Suites on the corner of Interstate 55 and Route 52.

Man pleads guilty in 2015 Crest Hill robbery

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man pleaded guilty Wednesday to the 2015 armed mugging of a Crest Hill couple.

Clarence E. Knight III, 24, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by Judge Dave Carlson in exchange for other charges being dismissed. Knight, who faced up to 30 years behind bars, must

serve at least half of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

About 2 a.m. Sept.

10, 2015, a couple was unloading their car in the 1600 block of Raynor Avenue when Knight Clarence E. and Justin Summlion Knight III approached them while carrying what appeared to be hand-

guns, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Deborah Mills said. The bandits took the man’s wallet, the woman’s purse, two cellphones, an iPad and medication before driving away.

One of the cellphones was “pinged” to the McDonald’s at 508 E. Cass St. in Joliet, but Summlion drove away when Joliet police arrived in the parking lot.

Mills said Knight was a passenger in the vehicle while a chase ensued. After

reaching Dellwood Park in Lockport, Knight ran from the car but was apprehended.

Mills said police found two handguns and a BB gun that resembled a firearm inside the car. They also recovered one of the stolen cellphones with Knight’s fingerprints on it.

Summlion, 29, was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty earlier this year.

Will County updated on federal priorities under new administration

the county.

The firm’s Jim Smith said President Donald Trump is expected to release an outline of his fiscal 2018 budget Thursday, but noted that there has been no specifics discussed related to the large infrastructure improvements Trump promised during his campaign.

County officials are keeping a close eye on proposed transportation expenditures as they prepare to apply for big-ticket grants once again to fund projects such as the widening of Interstate 55 and Interstate 80.

“We have had conversations with the U.S. Department of Transportation

this week, but not any detail in terms of the size or scope of the proposed infrastructure bill,” Smith said.

The firm’s Brett Garson said a lot of the transportation aid programs the county is interested in are considered mandatory spending.

“So they’re safe, which is good news for us,” Garson said.

The firm also is hearing a lot of talk about tax reform, but again, no specifics.

This could be because so much attention is tied to the repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act. Congress has laid out health care as

the top priority, followed by tax reform and infrastructure third, Smith said.

“Health care is taking up a lot of time,” Smith said, adding that it could be later this year or early 2018 before Congress moves on to tackle an infrastructure bill.

Meanwhile, in Springfield, state lobbyist Brent Hassert said there doesn’t appear to be any urgency to renew budget talks after the Senate’s grand bargain budget deal fell through last week.

In the House, there’s a “dog-and-pony show” going on as department directors speak before committees about potential budget cuts, Hassert said.

Lynn M. Arnstrom, nee Lamp, passed away Monday, March 13, 2017, at her home with family by her side.

Lynn is survived by her son, Gus (Kathryn) Arnstrom; nieces, Sheryl (Harold) Hudson, Janice M. Becker, Tina, Kathy Gora; and nephew, Ed Gora. She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Arnstrom; her parents, Stanley P. and Mary (Nee Smullins) Lamp.

Lynn graduate from Joliet Central High School, than studied at the Silver Cross School of Nursing, as well as the University of St. Francis graduating in 1971. She than worked at Silver Cross Hospital as the Director of Nursing Support, also at Joliet Central High School Director of Nursing in District 204. Lynn taught nursing for 19 years at Joliet Junior College. She served as a home heath care nurse for Joliet residents for many years, as well as a director of the Alzheimer’s unit at Salem Village.

Gregory A. Patterson, age 65 of Coal City, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Born May 19, 1951 in Joliet, Gregory Allen was a son of the late Arthur “Pat” and Frances (Wilson) Patterson. He was raised in Plainfield and graduated from Plainfield High School with the Class of 1969. On December 19, 1970, Greg married Martha Jane Benson in the Plainfield United Methodist Church. Together they made their home and raised their family in Coal City. Greg retired from Lyondellbasell in April of 2014, and was a member of the Coal City Area Club. In addition to hunting, riding his motorcycle and carpentry, Greg enjoyed taking evening rides to look for deer and feeding his pet squirrels.

He will be remembered for always being willing to lend a hand, whether helping a friend build a garage or a deck. He also cherished time spent with his grandsons fishing on the pontoon boat.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Jane; two sons, Gregory Scott (Nicole) Patterson and Patrick Allen (Stacy) Patterson, both of Coal City; three grandsons, Korey Wren and Connor and Hunter Patterson;sister, Patricia Nowman of Crystal Lake; brother, John Patterson of Plainfield, and brothers-in-law and sisters-inlaw, Donna Benson of Diamond, Donna (Gary) Arnold of Wesley Chapel, Florida, Ron (Vanessa) Benson of Goose Lake, and Jean (Dave) Wilcox of Diamond; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Edward Vercelli was born the 30th of April, 1925, in Joliet, Illinois, and attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School and Joliet Catholic High School Class of 1943. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he proudly served our country as the lead navigator in the 401st Bomb Group during World War II, based in Deenethorpe, Northhampshire, England. He and his fellow crewmen conducted over 40 successful missions in the European Theatre. Edward later became a senior pilot in the Korean War and rose to the rank of Major, ultimately winning 9 awards and decorations including the Air Force Commendation Medal and was a 3 time recipient of the Air Force Air Medal for his exemplary service. Post-war, he worked as a hurricane hunter based in Bermuda, and Base Operations Officer in Japan.

Following his 21 years of military service, he retired from active duty and continued to serve his country working for the Defense Department.

As one of his last wishes, Edward wanted to thank his caregivers Anna, Dawn and Kathy for their kindness and devotion in helping him through his final years. His family and friends will miss his strong faith, great sense of humor and quick wit most of all.

Top prosecutor starts new anti-crime efforts

CHICAGO – The Chicago area’s top prosecutor announced new efforts Wednesday to prosecute gun crimes in city neighborhoods plagued by violence and revamp a unit of her office that reviews possible wrongful convictions.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx,

who took office in December, said three attorneys from her office have teamed up with federal prosecutors and been embedded in two police districts with high gun-violence rates. She said the teams, which will decide if cases should be charged at federal or county levels, will manage cases from investigation to conviction.

“We must go after those who are violently attacking neighborhoods,” Foxx told the City Club of Chicago, a civic organization.

SPRINGFIELD – A Senate committee approved a new automatic voter registration plan Wednesday, sending to the floor a proposal that advocates said is tighter than one Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner rejected last year.

Democratic Sen. Andy Manar’s plan would allow residents to automatically register to vote when they visit certain state agencies. The Senate committee endorsed Manar’s measure Wednesday with a 10-3 vote.

Rauner vetoed similar legislation last year, fearing it did not contain enough safeguards to prevent voter fraud. Rauner’s spokeswoman, Eleni Demertzis, wouldn’t say whether he supports the new plan.

The updated version requires residents to confirm their eligibility before information is passed along to election officials or confidentially opt out instead. Its predecessor would have filed applications regardless, leaving election officials to follow up.

Supporters said the proposal would cut costs and bolster turnout by modernizing the registration process.

U.S. citizens already have the option to register to vote when they apply for a driver’s license or state ID at Secretary of State’s offices. Manar’s plan

“Automatic voter registration will extend democracy to the communities that need it most,” Williams said.

Republican Rep. Mike Fortner of West Chicago contends voters can rest easy knowing the new system, set to take effect in July, would not hazard an influx of ineligible voters.

Participating agencies would use personal information filed in their system to verify whether a visitor qualifies to vote.

“This is a data set that is going to allow us to make a more secure check that people are qualified,” Fortner said. He is sponsoring similar legislation in the House.

The state’s leading election authority expressed doubts last session over whether they had the time and resources necessary to roll out the original plan.

But Illinois State Board of Elections attorney Ken Menzel told The Associated Press the latest version reduces that burden by having potential applicants opt-out upfront.

Automatic registration, he said, could help “smooth out” the spike in applications election authorities face ahead of major elections.

In a scheme that prosecutors said blended intelligence gathering with old-fashioned financial greed, the four men targeted the email accounts of Russian and U.S. government officials, Russian journalists and employees of financial services and other private businesses, U.S. officials said.

Using in some cases a technique known as “spear-phishing” to dupe Yahoo users into thinking they were receiving legitimate emails, the hackers broke into at least 500 million accounts in search of personal information and financial data such as gift card and credit card numbers, prosecutors said.

“We will not allow individuals, groups, nation states or a combination of them to compromise the privacy of our citizens, the economic interests of our companies or the security of our country,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Mary McCord, the head of the Justice Department’s national security division.

The case, announced amid continued U.S. intelligence agency skepticism of their Russian counterparts, comes as U.S. authorities investigate Russian interference through hacking in the 2016 presidential election. Officials said those investigations are separate.

One of the Yahoo-related defendants, a Canadian and Kazakh national named Karim Baratov, has been taken into custody in Canada. Another, Alexsey Belan, is on the list of the FBI’s most wanted cyber criminals and has been in-

dicted multiple times in the U.S. It’s not clear whether he or the other two defendants, Dmitry Dokuchaev and Igor Sushchin, will ever step foot in an American courtroom since there’s no extradition treaty with Russia.

“I hope they will respect our criminal justice system,” McCord said.

The indictment identifies Dokuchaev and Sushchin as officers of the Russian Federal Security Service, or FSB. Belan and Baratov were paid hackers directed by the FSB to break into the accounts, prosecutors said.

Dokuchaev has been in custody in Russia since his arrest on treason charges in December, along with his superior and several others.

Russian media have reported that Dokuchaev and his superior were accused of passing sensitive information to the CIA. The media reports also have contended that Dokuchaev was arrested by the FSB several years ago and offered a choice: serve a long prison sentence on hacking charges or sign a contract to work for the agency.

The FSB hasn’t commented, and the Justice Department did not confirm that.

Yahoo didn’t disclose the breach until September, when it began notifying hundreds of millions of users that their email addresses, birth dates, answers to security questions and other personal information may have been stolen. Three months later, Yahoo revealed it had uncovered a separate hack in 2013 affecting about 1 billion accounts, including some that were also hit in 2014.

U.S. officials said it was especially galling that the scheme involved officers from a Russian counterespionage service that theoretically should be working collaboratively with its FBI counterparts.

“Rather than do that type of work, they actually turned against that type of work,” McCord said.

SPRINGFIELD – There is an old Marine saying that goes something like this: Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way.

Gov. Bruce Rauner would do well to remember that adage.

Because this past month he has failed at all three.

His first two years in office have been marked not so much by accomplishment but by clarity of vision.

But in the past month he has even botched that.

The Bruce Rauner the voters chose in 2014 was a man who stood for lower taxes, for reduced government spending and for reforming Illinois’ sleazy political culture.

He was the guy who ran on the platform of “shaking up Springfield.”

Well, he’s well on his way toward becoming what he ran against.

Remember he was the fellow who ran against “career politicians?”

And then last month he hired a failed one to be his deputy governor.

Leslie Munger may have been an OK comptroller, but the voters gave her the boot and the governor’s office shouldn’t serve as a soft-landing pad for Rauner’s failed political friends.

After all, Illinois voters chose him to govern – not to cut sweetheart deals.

These are the type of political shenanigans that have infested past administrations. The folks who elected you, Bruce, wanted something different.

Oh, I know you have Rasputin-like advisors who are whispering in

VIEWS Scott Reeder your ear: “Be Mr. Nice Guy, stay above the fray.

And, remember ‘help’ your friends.”

That’s worthless advice.

The recent Budget Address could be best summarized as: Um, I dunno.

It had as many question marks as digits.

The only thing that Rauner’s critics and his past supporters seemed to agree on was that it was billions of dollars out of whack.

That’s not leadership.

It’s vacillation.

In a state where ambiguity has long been the password for the status quo, Rauner is proving himself to be more of the same.

Illinois voters deserve to know where our governor stands.

Right, now, that’s a big question mark.

His administration isn’t beyond redemption, but it’s well on its way.

We are left scratching our heads and wondering what does our state’s chief executive stand for?

It’s time to stand for something.

Because, Bruce, we just don’t know you well enough, to miss you when you are gone.

To the Editor: We are worn out. Our Facebook feeds bombard us with contentious views pitting neighbor against neighbor. Friendships are under political strain.

The Koch brothers founded Americans for Prosperity. They will soon send mailings or robocall us, the people of Plainfield, to reject the library referendum.

These are billionaires without concern for your family.

They don’t live here. They will accost you with misinformation.

They have their own agenda and will use any means necessary.

The library is our community cornerstone. The classes and services are for us. Not every child has a computer for homework.

Not every out-of-work person has a way to job search. The library provides book clubs, technology lessons and movies.

There are classes for stay-athome parents, job fairs, English

classes and classes to turn plastic bags into blankets for the homeless.

This isn’t about being liberal or being conservative. This is about Plainfield and who we are.

The library last expanded in 1990. The population? 14,123.

Our district now has 75,337 people. The first referendum (thank you, Koch brothers) was voted down. The Trustees took our feedback. $10.67 a month (for a house worth $237,000) will add space, programs and services for a community that has increased five-fold. Many of us spend more weekly for coffee.

I know people are strapped, but communities take care of their people.

As the April 4th referendum approaches remember the Koch brothers. Plainfield is not their pawn. Remember your neighbors. Remember your library.

I leave you with Ursula K. LeGuin’s words.

To the Editor: The “Local Brief” article in The Herald-News on March 10 has the Joliet Police urging people to “drive sober or get pulled over” on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.

The comment needs clarification. Do they mean people in general or does that include the Irish too?

Only in America, with the exception of Ireland, everyone is Irish for one day.

Bolingbrook looking to make more history

cherron@shawmedia.com DEKALB – Heading into the final weekend of the season, Bolingbrook’s boys basketball team already has recorded some impressive history, not only for its program, but also for the other basketball programs in the area.

As a result of their dominating 83-57 victory over Naperville North in Tuesday’s Class 4A Northern Illinois University Supersectional in DeKalb, coach Rob Brost’s Raiders assured themselves of their second state trophy in the past three seasons.

That’s impressive considering that Bolingbrook had not won any trophies in boys basketball before its third-place finish in 2015, after it fell to eventual champion Stevenson in the semifinals. But it takes on even more significance when you compare it against all the others in the area who have competed in the largest class throughout the years.

Since 1937, when Joliet Township won the title to bring the first trophy to the area, there have only been eight other times when local schools finished among the top-four teams in the large-school division of the IHSA tournament, including Bolingbrook’s recent exploits.

The area’s previous best for the shortest time between winning two trophies featured Lockport, which took fourth place in 1973 and then won the state championship in 1978.

They are Lockport’s 1978 team, which was 31-0 and won its next two games to finish as unbeaten state champions,

and the 1973 Lockport (29-1) and 1995 Joliet Township (29-2) teams, who both lost their final two games to settle for fourth place.

This is the third time that an area team goes into the semifinals as the favorite, at least as far as the AP’s final regular season poll is concerned. The

Since 2004-05, Smith’s program has won six championships, placed second once and finished third last season, all while compiling a 369-53 record. Evan Gilyard (16.0 points a game), Marquis Brown (14.4), Talen Horton-Tucker (12.5) and Messiah Jones (9.3) lead the way for the Wolverines, who defeated top-ranked Edwardsville 76-64 in the Normal Supersectional.

“Obviously they’re the most storied program in the state of Illinois and it will be a challenge for us,” Brost said. “We’re honored to be there, but we just don’t want to be there. When you get to the dance, you want to stay for more than one song, as I heard another coach say about the NCAA tournament. The last time that we came this far, we played the No. 1 team in the state, and this time it’s going to happen again.

“Our guys will be ready to play on Friday. Simeon poses a lot of challenges from what I know, but they have to guard us, as well. Coach Smith does a great job, and I’m sure that he’d say the same thing about our program and where we’ve come, especially in the last four or five years. So it’s going to be a great game and a big challenge for us.”

Naperville North was looking to accomplish a first for its 40-plus-year-old program, which was assuring it of its initial trophy in the sport, but the Raiders doomed those hopes by capitalizing on their depth to establish early control in the supersectional and then expanding on a 39-28 halftime lead with a 22-9 cushion in the third quarter to break things open.

Junior Kaleb Thornton led all scorers with 20 points, while sophomore Tyler Cochran added 18 points. Senior Malik Binns contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds, sophomore Joseph Yesufu had 10 points, and senior Nana Akenten chipped in with nine points and nine boards.

That group also happen to be the Raiders’ leading scorers this season. Akenten (14.7), Binns (13.4), Thornton (12.7), Yesufu (10.1) and Cochran (8.7) have provided great balance for Brost, who collected win No. 200 on Tuesday for a program that he’s led for 10 seasons.

Veteran, mature group leads charge for Lockport

Shaw Media correspondent LOCKPORT – Flying under the radar is not something you expect from the Lockport baseball program.

But that is exactly what coach Andy Satunas, entering his seventh season at the helm, expects everyone to think this season.

The Porters are coming off a 21-15 campaign and finished second in the SouthWest Suburban Blue, the first time in six years the Porters did not win at least a share of the conference title.

“Not many people are expecting much from us this season,” Satunas said. “We don’t have that real bigname star, but we have a veteran group that is mature and have played a lot of baseball together. Last season we played with many underclassmen getting significant playing time. They return this year with that experience, and we have depth in key positions.

“I really like our up-the-middle defense, from the catching position through the outfield. We have veterans returning at each spot, except for second base, but we have a great group competing for playing time at the po-

The most important position on any team is pitching, and this year’s Porters have plenty of experienced big arms. They also will welcome a few newcomers to the rotation. The new pitch count rules instituted by the IHSA this season do not concern Satunas at all.

“We have a lot of arms returning with big-game experience,” Satunas said. “They now have the consistency to perform well and keep us in the game.

The new pitch count rules have been something we have had in place, and I really believe it will be a nonissue.”

Ben Davis, quarterback for the Porters football team and a basketball player, and Ryan Gabriel, both seniors, are two of the big names returning to the mound.

The pitching staff also will have a veteran to throw to behind the plate as senior Ryne Travis returns.

“My role is to get to know each pitcher like the back of my hand,” Travis said. “I have to know which way the ball breaks, what they like to throw and know what our defense can do with each one on the mound. The seniors on this team want to go out on a good note. Lockport baseball has been my whole life. I’ve played every year in this town growing up, and I want to represent the town that raised me and show that Porter baseball is alive and well.”

The outfield for the Porters also returns intact from last season, led by seniors Nick Strysic and Jake Suchor.

“Our bond on this team is really good,” Strysic said. “We have all come together, and we are anxious to get going for our final high school season.

The team success is the most import-

ant role anyone can have on this team.

Play solid and get better each day.”

Suchor, who also will get innings on the mound, can’t wait to get the season underway.

“We got our experience last season as juniors, and now we want to turn that into a big success as seniors,” he said. “We are here for the same goal.”

Offensively, the Porters return some big bats and will be led by third baseman Gavin Lovesky. Other keys in the lineup are Kevin Davis, Conor Fitzgerald, Strysic, the speed of shortstop Steve Salvino and newcomer C.J. Weins.

The Porters always play a tough schedule and will have annual trips to Louisville, Kentucky, to face some of the top southern teams in the country, and to Edwardsville for a weekend of games late in the season. They also will participate in the WJOL and Bajenski tournaments.

“Our goals remain the same every year for the program,” Satunas said.

“Be better every day, play your best when it matters most, win the conference title and do well in the state tournament. They are simple goals, but if achieved, the success will come.”

The Tigers must use the dirty word “rebuild” as far as their offensive attack goes, however. Senior third baseman Steinbach, who hit .300 with 19 RBIs, is the only Tiger who had a significant number of at-bats in 2016.

“My job this season is to help all of our young hitters,” Steinbach said. “ I have the utmost confidence in all our young hitters. With our outstanding pitching, I believe as the season goes on, we will score runs. We want to go back to Joliet and win it this season.

Personally, if I hit .350 or .150, as long as we win, that is all that matters.”

Peplow, who will see full-time duty, is looking for a big year at the plate as well as on the mound.

“I have been working very hard in

the offseason with my hitting,” Peplow said. “I am really excited and am looking forward to a big year.”

Junior Dillon McCarthy, the standout wide receiver/wing back/defensive back for the football team, looks to patrol center field and wreak havoc on the base paths. Darlington hopes to get McCarthy on base and watch him run.

“I am really looking forward to trying to do everything I can to help us win,” McCarthy said. “I’m hoping to get on base and steal a lot of bases. I also hope to play well in center field.

I believe with our great pitching and all our talented young players, we can win the state championship.”

When he isn’t pitching, Doyle will move to shortstop. Rose-Hulmanbound Dylan Diorio will be the first baseman, and football defensive back Anthony Fumagalli looks to provide more punch in the lineup.

Junior Luke Muller, another football player, and sophomore Greg Budig will share the catching duties.

Also from the football team, Sam Jones and Chris Jamison will add offensive depth.

Plainfield South is everyone’s favorite to win the SPC and the Class 4A state title in June. Minooka again will challenge in the SPC, along with Oswego, Oswego East and Plainfield Central.

“We know South is really loaded and favored to win the SPC and more,” Peplow said. “We won the SPC last season, and we want to repeat as champs.

We are really looking forward to meeting them here on May 8 and over there on May 10. They are a tough, great team. I can’t wait.”

“We are very young, but I really am optimistic that we can have another big year,” Darlington said. “We lost a group of seniors that won almost 100 games for us over the last three years and will be missed.

“With Brady (Corrigan) and Connor (Peplow), leading our pitching staff, we are blessed to have two quality pitchers that have the ability to shut down the opposition. With Brady Miller, Gavin Doyle and Keegan Bates, I am very confident in our juniors having big years.

“I know our solid pitching and defense will have to hold us together until our young hitters start to produce.

With Alex (Steinbach), the only returning starting position player, we look to him for leadership. We are fortunate that our administration allowed us to play 13 junior varsity games last season. This was invaluable, as our young players had plenty of game action. At Plainfield North, our goal every year is to be the best. I truly believe this group can get the job done.”

PLAINFIELD – Reload or rebuild?

At Plainfield North, under the tutelage of baseball coach John Darlington, the word rebuild is not part of the vocabulary. In 2016, for the fifth time in Darlington’s 10-year career, his Tigers won 30-plus games (33-5) and finished fourth in the state in Class 4A. The Tigers ran away with the Southwest Prairie Conference, winning 20 of 21 league games. Five SPC members (Plainfield North, South, East, Central and Minooka) won 4A regional championships. Plainfield South advanced to the Class 4A Elite Eight before falling to Providence in the University of Illinois Supersectional.

In 2017, the Tigers look to reload around their hard-throwing Arizona State-bound right-hander, 6-foot-4 Brady Corrigan, whose fastball hits 92 mph. All Corrigan did last season was go 10-2 with a 1.36 ERA. In addition, six members of the Tigers’ Class 7A state runner-up football team, led by senior right-hander Connor Peplow (Illinois State), bolster the North roster.

“I am looking forward to being the best I can be this spring,” Corrigan said. “I had a good year last year and hope to improve. I have been working very hard and am looking forward to hitting more than last year. I am very confident that we can get back to Silver Cross Field and win it all this time.”

Peplow, whose fastball also hits 92 mph, went 3-1 last season with a 2.70 ERA. He looks to move into the No. 2 spot in the rotation. He also hit .385 in limited action last season.

Brady Miller, a 6-3 junior and the Tigers’ quarterback and starter in basketball, looks to move into the No. 3 spot in the rotation. A pair of talented juniors, right-hander Gavin Doyle and southpaw Keegan Bates, complete the rotation.

“I’m looking forward to moving into the rotation and helping us win,” Miller said. “We graduated a number of great players, but with Connor (Peplow) and Alex (Steinbach) and a number of players from our state runner-up football team, we can get back to Joliet.”

Josh Garner (St. Louis), Jake Dunham (Northern Illinois), Zach Jarosz (South Dakota State), Justin Yeager (Southern Illinois), Josh Heckman (South Florida State), Tyler Garrity and Brandon Knox all have moved on.

The trio of Garner, Dunham and Jarosz went 91-21 in their careers. The seven lost to graduation drove home 90 percent of North’s runs in 2016.

Heyward looking to reclaim offensive success

bmiles@dailyherald.com The Cubs didn’t sign Jason Heyward solely because of his Gold Glove pedigree in right field.

Nor did they sign him for his oratorical skills.

These two things certainly helped the Cubs last year, but the team gave Heyward an eight-year, $184 million contract so he could produce with his bat.

That didn’t happen last season, as Heyward slumped to a batting line of .230/.306/.325 for an OPS of .631 and an OPS-plus of only 70. He hit seven homers and drove in 49.

That led to a winter of tearing things down and building them back up as Heyward worked with hitting coach John Mallee and assistant Eric Hinske.

Heyward’s swing appears to be more fluid, but the early results from the Cactus League show it’s a work in progress.

Through Tuesday’s action in Arizona, Heyward was 4 for 29 (.138) with a homer and six RBIs. Heyward has dealt with all the media inquiries with his usual grace. Whether he’s going well or going poorly, he’ll often wait for reporters so they can ask him questions.

“You don’t have to admit anything,” he said. “It is what it is. It’s right there.

“It’s all about how you handle that as an individual and as a group. We handled that the best out of anyone last year as a team, and that’s why we were able to win the World Series. I feel that’s the name of the game. Whoever wins the

The Cubs and Heyward are trying to unlock the secrets that led to a good year in 2012 with the Braves. That year he went .269/.335/.479 with 27 homers and 82 RBIs. So a track record is there.

“Yeah, because there was no thinking about where your hands were at,” he said. “I do feel like that, since that season, there were some differences in lineup stuff for me, like starting in 2013 hitting leadoff more. It’s not an excuse.

It’s just different things that are thrown into your head that you start to think about more than just going up there and doing anything.

“The bottom line is what makes it easier is that I’ve done it before the right way. There are plenty of times where I’ve done it before, and I felt myself do it the right way. I would say out of seven years, two bad years out of those. So there’s five good seasons. There’s a lot of good baseball in there.”

The statistical site FanGraphs finds room for optimism, noting that many of Heyward’s “peripheral” numbers weren’t far out of whack from his career norms last year. The one trouble spot was a 27 percent “soft” contact rate, which contributed to a .266 batting average on balls in play (BABIP).

“It’s more likely the result of a mechanical flaw that he’s spent the winter correcting, and we should see harder contact and, subsequently, a more frequent on-base presence from Jason Heyward.

For now, though, he’s not nearly the surefire pick that he’s been in years past, but he could very easily return to prominence in 2017.”

The Cubs will gladly take Heyward’s strong defense, accurate throwing, smart baserunning and overall team leadership ability.

inning of Game 7 of the World Series gets a lot of credit for the Cubs regrouping after blowing a lead and then going on to win. Could they have done it without the talk?

“I think so,” he said. “I don’t know, but I think so. I just never thought about it like that when it happened. It was just a moment where you feel like you need to say what you need to say. I’d have been (ticked) off at myself, win or loss, if I didn’t say it at the time.”

Moncada puts power in quiet spring with pair of homers

GLENDALE, Ariz. – White Sox top prospect Yoan Moncada hit consecutive home runs in his last two at-bats Wednesday, including one against hard-throwing Royals right-hander Kelvin Herrera. Moncada’s first homer came against starter Jason Hammel, who had shut out the Sox until then.

It served as a needed shot in the arm for the 21-year-old switch-hitter acquired in the trade for Chris Sale. The switch-hitter came into the game batting .200 with 13 strikeouts in 13 games

and no homers. Before going deep, Moncada, playing second base, made his team-high fifth error of the spring on Raul Mondesi’s ground ball in the fifth inning.

The 16th-seeded Aggies (23-12) rallied in the second half and held off North Carolina Central down the stretch to earn a trip to Tulsa to play No. 1 seed Kansas on Friday.

CHICAGO – Mike Conley and Marc Gasol each scored 27 points to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to a 98-91 win against the Bulls on Wednesday night.

Conley and Gasol scored 18 of the team’s 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Grizzlies held off the Bulls, who lost for the sixth time in seven games.

Memphis, which had lost five straight before winning Monday, earned its second straight win.

The Bulls never led in the second half, but Nikola Mirotic had a pair of tying 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Both were answered by Gasol, his teammate on the Spanish national team. The Grizzlies center hit a 3-pointer on the first, and then had a 3-pointer on the second, finishing a dunk after a foul by Mirotic for an 86-83 lead.

The Bulls were without Dwyane Wade down the stretch after he injured his right elbow with 8:34 remaining and did not return.

The Bulls closed the third quarter with a 7-0 run capped by Jimmy Butler’s alley-oop dunk, delivered perfectly from Rajon Rondo from half-court to make it 74-71.

Rondo, who was starting his second straight game after coming off the bench for 27 straight games, scored 17 points to lead the Bulls.

Mirotic and Butler had 14 points

Schmaltz ready to fill Auto Dealer in for injured Anisimov DIRECTORY

OTTAWA – Nick Schmaltz isn’t Artem Anisimov.

Schmaltz is more of a playmaker, a speedy and skilled guy with a knack for making jaw-dropping passes. Anisimov is more of a power forward, a big body who makes his living just outside of the crease, screening goalies and banging home rebounds.

But when Schmaltz steps in between Artemi Panarin and Patrick Kane, he seems to get the same results as Anisimov – a lot of chances and a lot of goals.

“It’s two great players, and they make my job easy,” Schmaltz said.

“I just try to find that open ice, and I know I’m going to get the puck from those guys, because they have such good playmaking abilities. It’s pretty easy when you’re playing with two guys that kind of think the same game, and always know where each

other are on the ice.”

Anisimov will miss three to four weeks – just about the rest of the regular season – with the left leg injury he suffered Tuesday night in Montreal. Coach Joel Quenneville had said it was “not serious” after the game, but Anisimov took a flight home to Chicago on Wednesday while the team rode a bus to Ottawa.

Quenneville said Anisimov, who set a career high with his 45th point Tuesday night before getting injured, “hopefully” will be back before the playoffs. So Schmaltz will move from Jonathan Toews’ left wing to Kane’s center. And the Hawks are quite comfortable with him there, after catching a glimpse earlier in the month when Anisimov was injured against Pittsburgh.

“Both times when [Anisimov] went out, I thought he did an excellent job in that role,” Quenneville said of Schmaltz. “He looks like he’s comfortable there. Not that he was uncomfortable playing with Jonny. He took advantage of a great opportunity there, as well. That versatility enhances his role going forward.”

Kane said his game doesn’t change much with Schmaltz instead of Anisimov, but that the line could adapt to take advantage of Schmaltz’s speed and playmaking ability. Johnny Oduya’s goal came off a broken 2-on-1 that Schmaltz directed, and Panarin’s goal was set up by a beautiful feed from the half wall by Schmaltz.

“If we get him moving his feet in the middle, skating up the ice with speed, he can back off a lot of [defensemen],” Kane said. “Or if they don’t back off, we’ve got a chance to get some odd-man rushes. He brings that speed element to the line, and you saw [Tuesday] we had maybe three or four 2-on-1s, and he made a couple of great plays, as well, on a couple of goals. It’s good to see him skate like that in the middle. That’s probably what we’ll try to stress the most.”

Former director of Center for Correctional Concerns authors book

JOLIET – People with incarcerated loved ones don’t talk about it.

Just as Sister Juanita Ujcik’s family never talked about it.

“I have lots of cousins and several of them have been incarcerated,” Ujcik said.

Ujcik, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate in Joliet, is the former director of the Center for Correctional Concerns in Joliet and the author of “Let None Walk Alone: a guide for family and friends of incarcerated people.”

Through the years, Ujcik unsuccessfully searched for a book like hers, so she finally decided to write it herself.

Sister Helen Prejean, author of “Dead Man Walking” wrote the book’s forward.

Ujcik will sign copies of her book March 20 at the Joliet Franciscan Center. She feels the book will have broader appeal than one might initially think.

“Everybody thinks it happens to other people,” Ujcik said. “But one out of every 32 people ends up interacting with the system and one of every 100 ends up spending time there.”

Furthermore, as Ujcik said in her book, the actions of the 2 million people behind bars affect other people, too: neighbors, co-workers, victims and their families, as well as taxpayers, police officers, lawyers and judges.

She verbally added two more groups: social workers and teachers, since having an incarcerated parent may affect children’s behavior.

“In other words, everyone is in some way connected to a person serving time in prison or in jail,” Ujcik wrote.

A silence that shouldn’t be

Why do people go mum when it comes to incarcerated loved ones?

“Oh, lots of reasons: fear, shame and they don’t know what kind of reaction they’ll get from people,” Ujcik said.

“Sometimes people in the system treat them poorly, almost as if they’re criminals, although they’re not accused of anything. It’s also due to a lack of understanding of how the system works.”

But throughout her book Ujcik makes one thing clear.

“I don’t tell people what to do. I give options, because every situation is different,” Ujcik said. “I worked hard at making this available to anybody who needs it: to affirm the things they are doing that are positive, to warn them about things that might be troublesome and to give them some idea of why they might make certain choices.”

Weight behind the words

Ujcik’s understanding and perspec-

tive of the system is definitely unique.

Originally from Lemont and an inner city school teacher for 15 years in Ohio, Ujcik said she returned to the Joliet area in the 1980s to be near her parents.

In 1984, Sister Vivian Whitehead, who had begun the Center for Correctional Concerns in 1979, offered Ujcik a job in the classroom at the Will County Jail to help transition inmates into society.

Soon Ujcik was participating in the National Convocation of Jail and Prison Ministry. At the request of the Diocese of Joliet, Ujcik expanded her ministry to DuPage County, where she began Jail, Understanding, Serving, Teaching, an agency similar to the Cen-

ter for Correctional Concerns, she said.

Ujick ran J.U.S.T. from 1986 to 1988.

She became director for the Center for Correctional Concerns in 1988, when Whitehead became president of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate. Ujick remained director until 2009.

Whitehead, who served as president of the congregation until 1992, now teaches at the Center for Correctional Concerns.

Ujcik said most of the people who wind up incarcerated have substance abuse issues or are mentally ill, “but both are sicknesses and I see it that way.”

That said, Ujcik is not naive. But she is compassionate.

“Do I trust everybody? No. Am I careful wherever I travel? Yes. Am I realistic most of the time? Actions speak louder than words,” Ujcik said. “Tell me something and I’ll listen. And until I have reason not to believe you, I’ll believe you.”

In 2016, 6,800 organizations collected more than $10.4 million in cash and food items nationwide and every bit went to local organizations that help people in need.

FRANKFORT – Michael Thompson Jr. of Frankfort has been named to the 2016-17 Souper Bowl of Caring National Youth Advisory Board.

Thompson is one of 15 students from 13 states chosen to serve as a member of this board.

In September and November, Thompson attended the organiza- Michael tion’s national youth Thompson Jr. training conferences in Houston, Texas. Thompson spent January and February serving an advocate for the organization and jump-starting movements in the greater Chicago community.

Souper Bowl of Caring’s National Youth Advisory Board is an exclusive program consisting of 15 student leaders from around the country selected through a competitive national application process.

The National Youth Advisory Board gives young volunteers an opportunity to take a larger leadership role in the organization, which encourages youth to collect donations through schools, places of worship and businesses and donate 100 percent of their collection to a local charity of their choice.

In addition to coordinating Souper Bowl of Caring drives, members are expected to serve as a youth spokesperson for the organization with local and national media, connect with other youth leaders interested in making a difference, grow the organization’s

Although all kinds of fiber supplements are available, they lack vitamins, minerals and micronutrients, so it’s better to eat whole foods. Most fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes and grains contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, but in differing amounts. For the best results, eat from a wide range of foods.

If fiber has been missing from your diet, it’s wise to add it slowly. Make the change to a high-fiber diet too quickly and you run the risk of unpleasant side effects, such as gas.

And be sure to drink plenty of liquid to keep the fiber – and your digestive tract – moving smoothly.

I was embarrassed that all I could come up with about the benefits of fiber was “because it’s good for you.” Can you help?

Dear Reader: Don’t feel bad! With your brief answer, you got right to the heart of the matter – dietary fiber is integral to a well-balanced diet and to a healthy life. It lowers your risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers, prevents constipation, stabilizes blood sugar and can help you maintain a healthy weight.

But kids are often natural skeptics when it comes to any kind of rules, so we’re happy to help you out with the science of why dietary fiber matters.

Let’s start with what we’re referring to when we talk about fiber. Dietary fiber is the part of the fruit, vegetable or grain that your body cannot digest and absorb.

It falls into two basic categories. Fiber that can dissolve in water is known as soluble fiber. Fiber that cannot dissolve in water, and which passes through the body pretty much intact, is known as insoluble fiber.

Each type of fiber offers a specific health benefit. Soluble fiber dissolves in water to form a kind of gel matrix, which puts the brakes on the entire digestive process. The presence of soluble fiber slows the absorption of sugars, which stabilizes blood glucose levels. It binds cholesterol so that instead of being absorbed by the body, cholesterol is excreted. And because the stomach takes longer to empty when soluble fiber is present, you wind up feeling fuller for longer.

Dear Abby: My 9-year-old daughter has several friends whom we love and who are good buddies for her. However, the rules in their homes are different from those at ours. One friend in particular, “Sarah,” eats a lot of junk food and watches more TV than we allow.
