Auto Roadside Court – Joliet Many of the earliest suppliers of food on Route 66 or Lincoln Highway started out selling gas before diversifying into food, snacks, drinks and other amenities.

Other highway caterers, however, became more adventurous and enterprising from the beginning, including many family-run roadside stands, diners and drive-ins.

These small businesses were successful until larger franchises and chains began competing with them for the traveling customer.

In addition to the businesses that catered to the ravenous needs of the traveling public, there also were entrepreneurs who saw the need to help provide shelter for the road-weary motorist.

Some provided open-air locations that resembled makeshift campgrounds and offered little to the overnight guest besides a place to park the automobile and pitch a tent. These frugal facilities soon were eclipsed by sites providing individual huts containing beds.

They were, in turn, the forerunners of the typical “tourist court,” a semi-circular layout of cabins around a manager’s office. Soon, most courts had running water in their rooms, and over the years, air conditioning, radio and, eventually, televisions were introduced.

The evolution into the modern motel premises was completed when rooms, offices and parking spaces all were brought together under the same roof in a single contiguous structure seen across the nation today.

Convenience and location, however, were the two ingredients that made cabin camps so popular in the 1930s.

These roadside courts gave automobile riders more privacy, easy check-in, less traffic and noise, economy, housekeeping facilities, no lobbies to pass through and a homelike atmosphere.

Arriving guests also could rent or buy additional amenities, such as blankets, sheets, pillows and snacks. For all that

He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication. they offered the traveling motorist, cabin camps often were flimsily constructed and not winterized.

Because of their makeshift construction techniques, these early cabins quickly deteriorated and soon were replaced by more solidly constructed motels.

This roadside court was located along an old stretch of Route 66 south of Joliet and included at least two sets of “motor court” buildings.

A HEAD START ON THE HOLIDAY Annual Plainfield Hometown Irish Parade attracts crowd

Shaw Media correspondent PLAINFIELD – Everybody is Irish at a St. Patrick’s Day parade, and the one in Plainfield on Sunday was no exception.

Even if the red hair wasn’t natural, or the fuzzy beards and plastic moustaches were fake, no one took notice.

One man obviously hung onto his green plaid sports coat just for a special occasion such as this – the most famous of Irish holidays.

Fourteen-year-old Matthew Pierson, a Plainfield resident of Irish descent, was decked out as a leprechaun in a green hat and red beard to watch the parade with his family.

Occasionally, he asked a wander-

ing soul whether he or she might know where his pot of gold would be. The family comes every year to the Plainfield Hometown Irish Parade, said his mom, Beth Pierson, because they are Irish for one thing.

“It’s good old-fashioned family fun,” she said.

They brought chairs and blankets to mark their spot earlier in the day and then walked around to keep warm in the brisk but sunny air.

After the parade, the family traditionally heads over to Fox’s Restaurant & Pub for a bite to eat and to listen to some more Irish music.

“We have an excellent day for a parade today,” parade announcer Paul Faye boomed over the microphone.

trict, sirens blaring and horns honking, kicked off the lineup along Lockport Street. Kids and family members waved from inside the truck, while others tossed candy to those lined up along the barricades.

Plainfield Mayor Mike Collins was one of the first entries in the parade, as were the Knights of Columbus, complete with their own walking and waving St. Patrick.

Irish Parade Princess Sarah Cousins also was in attendance.

Kids excitedly grabbed for candy off the street or hollered for a T-shirt to be tossed to them. Werk Force Brewing Co. handed out samples of green beer to adults and students from Your Performing Arts Center in Plainfield in costume, singing and dancing to pro-

mote their upcoming performance of the “Lion King Jr. Experience.”

Parade committee members were excited that they had more entertainment participants than in years past, especially for their 15th annual parade, Debbie Olsen said.

Olsen and her neighbors, who are members of the Village Preservation Association of Plainfield, started the parade 16 years ago with one float around the block in their neighborhood on the east side of Interstate 59.

The event grew for a few years in a row, more and more people coming out to watch. Now it has grown to include 66 entries this year with an expected turnout of between 5,000 and 8,000

Wife, mother, grandmother.

No matter what title Terri wore, it always represented selfless generosity.

“She was a great woman,” said Terri’s son, Drake Rossi of Chicago.

“She was my hero. She would do anything to help anybody. That’s just the way she was. Every one of my siblings knew it, too. She was the first one we went to if we ever had an issue. No matter what she was doing, she would stop and help us.”

Terri’s other son, Brandon Rossi of Frankfort, agreed and said his two children, ages 6 and 3, especially benefited from their grandmother’s presence and influence. They always had fun, whether they spent the day in her pool or engaged in any number of fun activities that Terri planned.

“And I got to hear their stories at the end of the day,” Brandon said.

“She was a beautiful mother and grandmother. I couldn’t ask for more in life.”

Amanda Marshall of Orland Hills, Terri’s daughter, felt Terri connected with her grandchildren in simple but meaningful ways, ones specific to each child. For instance, Amanda’s 15-year-old daughter, Gianna Marshall, has fond memories of daylong shopping trips in Oak Brook with Terri.

On the other hand, Amanda’s son, Chase Marshall, 17, often helped his grandmother work the computer programs for athletic tournaments.

When Terri was ill, Chase, who Amanda called “an old soul,” would sit at her bedside, talking.

Terri did the same with her own children when they were young, Amanda said. It didn’t matter if they participated in swimming, wrestling, soccer or football. Terri jumped in

I can do that.’ ” Ray Rossi of Frankfort, Terri’s husband, saw similar qualities in Terri years ago, as when he met her for the first time in eighth grade. Besides being pretty, although Terri didn’t consider herself pretty, Terri also was popular, which Ray attributes to Terri’s openness and acceptance.

“She would be friends to people from all walks of life,” Ray said.

Ray and Terri began dating as young adults after they reconnected while riding the same commuter train to work. Even in their early years of

marriage, Terri’s helping spirit ruled the day.

“She worked two jobs to put me through law school,” Ray said.

Ray said Terri worked for Allstate and Blue Cross Blue Shield. She later worked for District 210, four years at Lincoln-Way Central High School in New Lenox and then 11 years at Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort.

Although Terri wasn’t a fan of politics, Ray said she supported him when he ran for mayor of Frankfort, and she worked hard to help him get elected. Ray said he served as mayor from 1993 to 2005.

“She would garner support from neighbors, Lincoln-Way people and other people she knew,” Ray said.

“She was always behind the scenes helping. To her, the recognition wasn’t all that important. It was the results.”

When it came to results, Terri also was quite the handyman. She not only could reattach a fan belt to a lawnmower, but Terri could repair the refrigerator as well as the swimming pool pump, Ray said.

“She didn’t mind getting dirty weeding around the house,” Ray said.

“She was the general contractor for two additions we put on the house.

The second turned out to be a man cave in deference to me, but it was all her doing. She helped build a couple of patios.”

Some people take it easy in retirement. Not so with Terri.

“When she retired from Lincoln-Way, she unilaterally decided that she would take over the banquet functions at Juliet’s, a Joliet restaurant/bar owned by our son, [Carmen Rossi],” Ray said in an email. “She refused to take any money for the job that she would work 2 to 3 days a week.”

But no story on Terri, who was 63 when she died Feb. 4, would be complete without mentioning her love for animals. Ray said Terri owned horses as a child, and although that wasn’t the case in adulthood, she did have a fair number of dogs.

Just how many dogs did Terri own through the years? Ray offered this clue. She’d named her children alphabetically – Amanda, Brandon, Carmen and Drake – and then began naming her dogs where the children left off.

Terri’s last dog was a mastiff named Icon.

“She would have been a great veterinarian,” Ray said.

JOLIET – Members of the Rotary Club of Joliet donated dictionaries to third- and fourth-grade students at Joliet Public Schools District 86.

Students districtwide saw 28 members of the Rotary Club come to their classrooms last week to present the dictionaries and to share with them the Rotary Four-Way Test that concerns high ethical standards.

Jennie Mills, a Joliet Rotarian, came March 8 to M.J. Cunningham Elementary School to give the students their dictionaries, which included a calendar and content on sign language and braille.

“Those are yours to keep,” Mills said.

As the students flipped through the dictionary, Mills asked them to look up the word service, as the Rotary Club believes in service above self.

The Rotary Club is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional and community leaders who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards

The students went over the FourWay Test, which was created in 1932 by Herbert J. Taylor, a Rotarian, according to the website. The test was adopted by Rotary in 1943.

The tests asks four questions of what Rotarians should think, say or do: • Is it the truth?

• Is it fair to all concerned?

• Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

• Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

“You should be fair to everybody, right? … Treat people how you want to be treated,” Mills said.

Cunningham Principal Maria Arroyo said the students were excited to receive the dictionaries from the Rotary Club. She said she thinks they discovered something they didn’t know existed.

“With technology nowadays, it’s so easy to just look up a word or it self-corrects the word, so they don’t rely much on the dictionary,” Arroyo said. “So for them, I think [the dictionary is] something that they needed, so they know this is where it all started.”

“As a Channahon resident and member of the Channahon Police Department, I am proud that Channahon is rated one of the safest cities in Illinois,” Wold said. “I wish I could say the credit goes to the police department, but in reality the credit goes to the citizens of Channahon for being proactive. They are locking their homes and cars more than in the past, and frequently reporting suspicious circumstances before it rises to the level of criminal activity.”

Moorman Schumacher agrees.

She believes the rating is a testament to community policing under police chiefs going back for years.

On the flip side, when something is going on, Channahon police are very professional and well trained, she said.

“I will fight for money in the budget to get them trained,” Moorman

Schumacher said. “Those things are paramount as far as I am concerned.”

Channahon police officers can be found out and about in the community getting to know everyone from age 8 (and younger) to 80.

Officers read to kids recently at Galloway Elementary School’s reading night, Moorman Schumacher said. The village’s National Night Out keeps growing every year.

“It matters more with the kids,” she said. “If they grow up knowing [the officers], when they need help they will be more apt to ask.”

Channahon community outreach programs include Cadets, Citizens Police Academy, peer jury and a school resource officer to keep residents in touch regularly with the officers.

“It is important to maintain a good relationship between the police department and the community members,” Wold said. “It really opens up the lines of communication.”

BILL CURRY Bill Curry, age 64, of Lemont, passed away with his family at his side.

Preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd (Rose) Curry; siblings, Joseph Curry, Bob Curry, and Nancy Smith. He is survived by his dear wife, Bettye (nee Shields) Curry of 43 years of marriage; his loving daughter, Amanda (Bill) Hill; and three “furry grandchildren,” (his cats); also a brother, John Curry; sisters-in-law, Judy Curry, and Vicki Panepinto; and several nieces & nephews, and many cherished friends.

Bill was an active member of the Lemont Classic Car Club. He especially liked riding his

HAZAMI F. KHATER, M.D. Hazami F. Khater, M.D., (nee Farhat), age 79. Peacefully, Friday, March 10, 2017 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, with her family by her side, following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Damascus, Syria and raised and educated in Syria. Hazami spent two and one-half years in Montreal, Canada, to serve her internship at Montreal General Hospital under the auspices of McGill University. She relocated to Chicago, Illinois and while in Chicago she worked at Cook County Hospital as an anesthesiologist. Then in 1969, she moved to Joliet, and made this town her home.

She is a graduate of Damascus University Medical School. Shortly after graduation, she met her husband, who was the love of her life, and they married in 1963. Dr. Amin’s kind demeanor and artistic talents are what captured her heart many years ago.

She is a member of the American Medical Association and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. She was Chairman of the Anesthesiology Department at St. Joseph Medical Center for three years. Upon her retirement, she could not just simply retire. She had to keep busy, and wanted to continue to make an impact on society. She found that putting people and properties together was a great source of satisfaction. She was an extremely capable business woman.

Survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Amin M. Khater, M.D., of Joliet; three sons, Timothy (Mayada) Khater, M.D., Ph.D., of Lubbock, TX, Russell (Susan) Khater, M.D., M.B.A, of Joliet, and Kevin (Maya) Khater, M.D., Ph.D., of Lake Forest; nine grandchildren, Dalia, Keenan and Kareem; Alexander, Julia and Cameron; and Adam, Jade and Sara Khater. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Gene graduated from Tridelphia High School in W. VA. He then served in the US Marine Corp in Guam during the Korean War for 3 years and then served as a Marine Drill Instructor in Parris Island, S.C. for a year. After serving in the military, Gene returned to Joliet with his beautiful wife and worked 2-3 jobs as they raised their 6 children. He retired from Commonwealth Edison after 34 years of dedicated and honorary service as a Master Mechanic and Area Maintenance Engineer, and an esteemed member and contributor of the Total Job Management Team for Nuclear Power Plants around the area.

Gene did not stop working after retirement. He made things, he fixed things, he devoted his life to everyone who needed anything. He became a connoisseur cook and fed the hungry. He took care of the sick and the dying. Gene was bigger than life to everyone who ever had the honor of meeting him. He was a true Patriarch of the family and he was our Hero. It was his passion for his family, his troops, his employees, his church, and his friends that gave him the drive to always better himself, to become more knowledgeable about everything he did.

He will be dearly missed, and we are so grateful to have had him for 86 beautiful years. He is with his family in heaven now.

He served with the United States Army during Vietnam, and was a graduate of DeVry Institute of Technology. Chuck worked in the telecommunications industry for over 40 years and was a proud member of Local #134, IBEW. He was also a member of Illinois Lodge, AF&AM. Chuck will be remembered for the love and pride he had for his family, his unselfishness and willingness to help others, and his talents and ability to fix almost anything. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife.

He was born January 10, 1931, on the Chaplin Farm in Wheatland Township, IL. Beloved son of the late Jay and Lois (nee Chaplin) Culver; loving brother of Mary Ann (the late Wilbert E.) State considers sales taxes on more services

SPRINGFIELD – If you get your nails done at a salon or have your lawn mulched next spring, the service could be taxed under a plan Illinois lawmakers are considering to help fill a multibillion-dollar hole in the state budget.

U of Illinois faculty petitions against hate speech

URBANA – Several University of Illinois academic units have pressed administrators to take a stance against words and actions they said threaten students amid tense debates on what constitutes free speech.

Chancellor Robert Jones sent out a mass email two weeks ago responding to concerns that include Chief-related “Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day” T-shirts, harassment of Muslim students, anti-immigrant messages on the quad and the defacing of an Israeli flag at a protest.

Jones asked the campus to combat hateful speech with “speech that builds connections and shared understanding,” the News-Gazette reported.

But faculty from African-American Studies, American-Indian Studies, Asian-American Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, and Latino Studies challenged Jones with a petition last week on “Racism and ‘Free Speech.’ ” The petition said Jones’ email was “insufficient at best.”

“The refusal on the part of the University of Illinois to denounce even the content of the messages or the threats themselves only emboldens students to continue these and related acts of intimidation, safe in the knowledge that the university will do little to protect students from harm,” the petition read.

“Furthermore, the administration’s approach has made some students more vulnerable than others.”

Jones acknowledged at a campus Senate hearing that his email didn’t properly communicate the university’s “core values,” but took offense to the petition’s suggestion that the school’s approach represented a tolerance for “xenophobia, racism, as well as white supremacy, as forms of free speech.”

Immigration officials shift where deportees are held

CHICAGO – Immigration officials in the Chicago area have shifted where they detain immigrants being deported to Mexico.

Instead of transferring them to a processing center in suburban Broadview, they are sent about 70 miles from Chicago to the Kankakee County Detention Center.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman said the shift began March 3 to make better use of agency resources and a “smoother process” for visiting families.

There are roughly 130 detainees in Kankakee currently. Chicago’s WBEZ first reported the change.

Immigration attorneys and advocates criticize the move for a lack of transparency.

They also argue that family members wanting to visit relatives before they’re deported have to travel farther.

ICE officials said they’re committed to ensuring the legal rights and the physical and mental well-being of those detained.

“Our economy used to be things we made,” she said. “Now, it’s things we do.”

Building a broader tax base

Hutchinson’s proposal would tax the use of storage space, including parking garages and boat docks; repairs and maintenance of personal property such as cars; landscaping services such as sprinkler installation and snow removal; dry-cleaning; cable TV, satellite and digital streaming services; pest control; use of a private detective or installation of a home security system; and personal care, ranging from tanning to tattooing but not including hairstyling. Some states tax other major services such as internet access and gym memberships.

Illinois would not.

Taxing these services was originally projected to bring in $360 million per year, but an adjusted estimate now places that number at $291 million – a smaller piece of the $6 billion puzzle Hutchinson’s revenue bill must complete to help balance the budget.

Tom Johnson, president emeritus of the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois, said taxing services is a commonsense place to start because it targets purchases made most often by those with more disposable income.

“Adding services to a sales tax base will always make the tax less regressive,” Johnson said.

Weekend shootings in Chicago leave 3 dead

CHICAGO – Shootings in Chicago this weekend left three people dead – including a man who was shot on the city’s far North Side when he climbed off a party bus.

Police said two other men were also shot when someone opened fire from an SUV at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Quentin Payton of Chicago was pronounced dead a short time later. The wounded men were taken to area hospitals and information about their conditions wasn’t immediately released.

Police said that two other men were killed Saturday in separate shootings on the South Side.

Thirty-four-year-old Jarrod Johnson was killed early Saturday and on Saturday night the body of a man was found inside a vehicle. His name hasn’t been released.

No arrests have been made in any of the shootings.

In budget, Trump set to push conservative views

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump sends Congress a proposed budget this week that will sharply test Republicans’ ability to keep long-standing promises to bolster the military, making politically painful cuts to a lengthy list of popular domestic programs.

The Republican president will ask his adopted political party, which runs Capitol Hill, to cut domestic agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development, along with grants to state and local governments and community development projects.

The spending plan, set for release Thursday, would make the Pentagon the big winner with a $54 billion boost to defense spending.

Trump has promised to “do a lot more with less,” but his blueprint faces a reality test with Republicans, many of whom are already protesting.

Republicans have groused about some of the preliminary plans, including elimination of the $3 billion community development block grant program that’s popular among local GOP officials, a 25 percent cut to the EPA and elimination of 3,000 jobs, and essentially scuttling a $300 million per-year program to clean up the Great Lakes.

Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, is joining with Democrats to push back on that last proposed reduction. Cuts to the Coast Guard are meeting Republican resistance. Trump’s plan to eliminate community development block grants was dismissed on Capitol Hill by those who remember how a modest cut to the program sank a spending bill not long ago.

“Unfortunately, we have no alternative but

to reinvest in our military and make ourselves a military power once again,” White House economic adviser Gary Cohn said on “Fox News Sunday.”

The U.S., however, already spends more than half trillion dollars on defense, more than the next seven countries combined.

Cohn defended the spending cuts elsewhere as necessary to balance the budget. “These are tough decisions, but the president has shown he is ready, willing and able to make these tough decisions,” he said Sunday.

Democrats are unlikely to support the cuts, and Republican defections raise the possibility of a congressional train wreck and a potential government shutdown when the 2018 budget year begins Oct. 1.

Preliminary reports on the budget show some domestic Cabinet agencies, such as the departments of Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs, would see increases, including $3 billion for Trump’s promised wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump said repeatedly during the campaign that Mexico would pay for that project, but Mexico has said no.

Those intended spending increases, however, would mean deeper cuts elsewhere.

People familiar with the budget who spoke on the condition of anonymity in advance of the public release said the White House is seeking a 30 percent cut from an Energy Department office that promotes energy efficiency and renewable energy.

The office has funded research on projects such as LED light bulbs, electric trucks, advanced batteries and biofuels.

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is targeted for at least $700 million in cuts from its current $2.1 billion budget, said Scott Sklar, chairman of the steering committee of the Sustainable Energy Coalition.

McCain: Provide wiretap evidence or retract claim

WASHINGTON – The House intelligence committee is asking the Trump administration for evidence that the phones at Trump Tower were tapped during the campaign as its namesake has charged, a request reinforced Sunday by an influential Republican senator who says the president must either come up with the evidence or retract his claim.

“I think the president has one of two choices: either retract or to provide the information that the American people deserve, because, if his predecessor violated the law, President Obama violated the law, we have got a serious issue here, to say the least,” Sen. John McCain said.

President Donald Trump asserted in a tweet last week: “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory.

Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”

He continued the allegation against former President Barack Obama in other tweets but offered no evidence.

The request for evidence by Monday was made in a letter sent to the Justice Department by the House committee chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and the panel’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., a senior congressional aide said Saturday. The aide wasn’t authorized to discuss the request by name and requested anonymity.

Obama’s director of national intelligence, James Clapper, has said that nothing matching Trump’s claims had

taken place, but that has not quelled speculation that Trump’s communications were monitored by the Obama administration. Trump has asked Congress to investigate.

Early this past week, Schiff said the committee would answer the president’s call to investigate the claim. He also said he would ask FBI Director James Comey directly when he appears later this month before the full committee, which is investigating Russian activities during the election.

On Sunday, Schiff said he doubted there was any evidence of wiretapping, but that Comey and others called to testify at the upcoming hearing “would be in a position to have to know.”

“I think on March 20 if not before we’ll be able to put this to rest,” Schiff told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s

“This Week.” “I don’t think anyone has any question about this, George.

The only question is why the president would make up such a thing.”

McCain said Trump could “clear this up in a minute” if he were to call “the director of the CIA, director of national intelligence and say, ‘OK, what happened?’ ” The president has an obligation to provide evidence that Obama broke the law or retract his claim, the Arizona Republican said.

“I do believe on issues such as this, accusing a former president of the United States of something which is not only illegal, but just unheard of, that requires corroboration. I’ll let the American people be the judge, but this is serious stuff,” McCain said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Abrupt dismissals spark turmoil among federal prosecutors

WASHINGTON – Two days before Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered dozens of the country’s top federal prosecutors to clean out their desks, he gave those political appointees a pep talk during a conference call.

The seemingly abrupt about-face Friday left the affected U.S. attorneys scrambling to brief the people left behind and say goodbye to colleagues. It also could have an impact on morale for the career prosecutors who now must pick up the slack, according to some close to the process. The quick exits aren’t expected to have a major impact on ongoing prosecutions, but they gave U.S. attorneys little time to prepare deputies who will take over until successors are named.

“It’s very, very gut-level reaction,” said Steven Schleicher, a former prosecutor who left Minnesota U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger’s office in January and was still in contact with people there.

The request for resignations from the 46 prosecutors who were holdovers from the Obama administration wasn’t shocking. It’s fairly customary for the 93 U.S. attorneys to leave their posts once a new president is in office, and many had already left or were making plans for their departures. Sessions himself was asked to resign as a U.S. attorney in a similar purge by Attorney General Janet Reno in 1993.

But the abrupt nature of the dismissals – done with little explanation and not always with the customary thanks for years of service – stunned and angered some of those left behind in offices around the country.

Some of those ousted were longtime prosecutors who had spent their careers coming up through the ranks of the Justice Department. John W. Vaudreuil, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, became an assistant U.S. attorney in that office in 1980.

Another, Richard S. Hartunian of the Northern District of New York, joined the Justice Department in the 1990s.

“All of these U.S. attorneys know they serve at the pleasure of the president. No one complains about that,” said John Walsh, an Obama-era appointee as U.S. attorney in Colorado who resigned in July. “But it was handled in a way that was disrespectful to the U.S. attorneys because they were almost treated as though they had done something wrong, when in fact they had not.”

Peter Neronha, who had served since 2009 as U.S. attorney for Rhode Island, said even before Friday he had been preparing for his eventual de-

parture and had written a resignation statement to be released upon his exit.

He said he knew his time was limited but had been eager to stay on to see through a major public corruption prosecution and to speak with students about the perils of opioid addiction.

“When that was done, I was going to go anyway – whether I got 24 hours’ notice, or two weeks’ notice, or two months’ notice. It doesn’t really matter,” Neronha said.

Whenever there’s a change in presidential administration, he said, “I think it would be unwise not to be ready.”

It’s not clear why the Justice Department asked the prosecutors to exit so quickly. Sessions gave no warning during the Wednesday conference call in which he articulated his agenda for fighting violent crime.

“The attorney general did not mention on that call, ‘Stay tuned for changes,’ ” Neronha said.

Much of the public attention since Friday has focused on Preet Bharara, the high-profile Manhattan federal prosecutor who said he was fired despite meeting with then-President-elect Donald Trump and saying he was asked to remain.

Trump himself did apparently make an attempt to speak with Bharara in advance of the Friday demand for resignations. The president reached out through a secretary on his staff to Bharara a day earlier but the two men never spoke, according to a person told about the conversation but who requested anonymity. The White House on Sunday said the president reached out to thank Bharara for his service and to wish him good luck.

USF women hope to continue magical season vs. defending champion SUBMITTED REPORT SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Two years ago, Marian (Indiana) came in as one of four No. 2 seeds to the NAIA National Tournament but was upset in the opening round by three points from unranked Tabor. Last year, the Knights claimed their first national championship.

Last year, University of St. Francis’ amazing 28-5 season came to an abrupt halt when the Saints, one of four No. 2 seeds, dropped a 63-60 decision to unranked Asbury.

A repeating coincidence? The No.1ranked Saints hope so as they continue their magical season Monday night when they face defending champion Marian in the semifinal round. Tipoff is 6:04 p.m., with the game televised on ESPN3.

USF coach Samantha Quigley Smith is no stranger to the postseason, having made the NCAA I national tournament in each of her four years as a player at DePaul, topped by a Sweet 16 finish her senior year in 2011.

“The NAIA tournament is a lot more unique,” said Quigley Smith, who boasts a 101-61 mark in her fifth season at the helm of the Saints’ program. “With this tournament being only one week and not spread over three weeks [like the NCAA], there’s always something bigger and better, so there’s not a lot of time to reflect on being one of the final four teams.

“The show must go on. We’ve got a game on Monday.”

For the Saints to bring home the program’s first national title, they will have to get by two more No. 1 seeds like themselves as all four top seeds in their respective brackets won their first three games to get to the semifinal round.

It marks only the third time since the 20-year tournament went to four eight-team brackets in 2003 that each of

Combined, this year’s top four boast a 134-8 record, led by USF’s 34-1 mark.

No.2-ranked Concordia follows at 34-2, with No. 3 Saint Xavier at 33-2 and No. 4 Marian 33-3. Concordia boasts the most experience of the quartet with this being its 16th appearance and sixth in a row. The Bulldogs’ best showings were

a runnerup finish in 2015 and three third-place finishes, the last in 2012.

As for the others, they are fairly young to the field. Saint Xavier has made five appearances, Marian four and the Saints two. Neither St. Francis nor Saint Xavier ever had played as far as the semifinal round and only once – Cardinal Stritch in 2014 – has a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference team reached this round previously.

Saint Xavier meets Concordia in Monday’s other semifinal matchup (8:04 p.m.) with the championship slated for 7:04 p.m. Tuesday, also on ESPN3.

After swallowing the bitter pill dealt

Four area clubs have IKWF title winners

Athletes from four area wrestling clubs captured individual championships at the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation Championships in Rockford.

Celtic Elite’s Dean Hamiti won the senior division title at 95 with a 7-3 victory over Martinez Fox Valley Elite’s Diego Sotelo. And the Lemont Bears’ Apollo Gothard captured the 177 senior title with a fall in 1:21 over Xtreme’s Louie Cretsinger.

DeKalb Huntley easily captured the title with 159 points. Coal City was fourth with 100 points while Dwight (68) took sixth and Channahon (64) tied for ninth in the competition.

“It was a total team effort. We had full open gyms here, at Lewis and at DePaul. That made a world of difference.

With all but two players returning, including all five starters, 2016 NAIA All-American Charnelle Reed knew this team would be a lot better.

“When we lost right away last year, that hurt us and added fuel to our fire for this year,” said Reed, USF’s leading scorer (16.7) and rebounder (7.1). “We had a chip on our shoulder from the start of the offseason. No one wanted a repeat performance. We wanted to showcase it for real this time.

season. Any free time we had, we were always together, whether it was on or off the court. We wanted to get to know each other better and become better teammates and you can see that in how we share the ball this year.”

While USF point guard Christina Ekhomu feels good about getting this far after a rigorous offseason, she knows

more work needs to be done.

“From day one of open gym, the offseason was big and it’s amazing to see what hard work does,” she said. “It feels good that we accomplished getting [to the semifinals], but we have that mindset that still is some unfinished business to take care of, that there is still more work to do.”

Despite being 10-1 against NAIA Top 25 teams, Quigley Smith knows another tough task awaits Monday against a Marian team riding a 21-game winning streak with seven players averaging at least seven points and nearly 80 points per game as a team.

“They are super athletic from 1 to 5 with multiple scorers, so we are going to have to stop a lot of people,” Quigley Smith said. “The huge point of emphasis will be to get stops early whether we score or not. We have to grind it from the beginning and bring a lot of energy.”

Senior Angelica Osusky, who has played in 129 of 131 games during her four-year career, feels the Saints will be ready for whatever Marian brings.

“Playing people at a higher level makes you work harder,” Osusky said in reference to facing players from DePaul and Lewis in open gyms over the summer. “We put in that work last year, determined to get further and make an impact.

“Knowing we can play with [higher-caliber] players, we have that confidence going into Monday night.”

SPRINGFIELD – Five wrestlers from local high schools captured championships Sunday at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association frosh-soph state tournament.

Plainfield Central’s Nicholas Minnito, Providence Catholic’s Josh Ramos, Lincoln-Way East’s Nick Mihajlovich, Minooka’s Drew Gutknecht and Bolingbrook’s Brandon White all claimed first-place finishes in the event.

In the lone championship match between two area competitors at 195 pounds, Gutknecht pulled out a 3-1 overtime victory against Lincoln-Way Central’s Mason Sargent.

Minnito edged Round Lake’s Daniel McPherson, 7-5, at 113, Ramos won, 5-2, over Glenbard East’s Alexander Posada at 138, Mihajlovich nipped Yorkville’s Brady Fisher, 5-4, at 182 and White capped the day by recording a fall in 3:38 over Cahokia’s Jacob Bullock.

Taking third place were Plainfield East’s Alex Villar (101) and D’Anthony Hopkins (126) and Lemont’s Drew Nash (120), and finishing in fourth was Lockport’s Kaleb Thompson (101).

Claiming fifth place were Plainfield North’s Dylan Amico (101), Lincoln-Way East’s Gustave Christensen (152) and Lockport’s Malik Daghash (170). Settling for seventh were Lockport’s Jake D’Angelo (120) and Garrett Golob (126) and Minooka’s Jacob Shipla (220). Taking eighth place was Plainfield East’s Barry Stevenson (126).

In the girls folkstyle state finals, which also were held this weekend, Joliet West’s Louisa Schwab took second at 127 after getting pinned in 4:00 by Maine West’s Monica Mendoza.

And claiming fourth-place finishes in that event were Lockport’s Isabelle Ladd (106) and Lincoln-Way Central’s Skylar Novak (136), who competes for Gilbert Grappling.

Villanova gets top seed in tournament; Syracuse out

The Associated Press For pure drama, best wait ’til the shots start flying.

For sheer excitement, Selection Sunday belonged to Northwestern.

Though it was no surprise when that school’s name popped into the NCAA Tournament bracket, it was a reminder that, yes, this is March Madness – that time of year where anything can happen. The Wildcats, longtime losers in the Big Ten, were invited to the tournament for the first time in school history, and the group-hugging, selfie-taking reaction from the players (and others) when their name came up showed how much the accomplishment really meant.

“When I came here four years ago, it was a belief in a day like today,” said coach Chris Collins, whose team won 23 games on its way to the tournament.

Another set of Wildcats – the ones from Villanova – were given the tournament’s top overall seed. The defending champions were joined by Kansas, North Carolina and Gonzaga on the “1’’ line – a quartet that produced very little in the way of head scratching.

With the brackets set, the action begins Tuesday and Wednesday with opening-round games that will include matchups between the last at-large teams invited into the draw: No. 11 seeds Providence vs. Southern California and Kansas State vs. Wake Forest.

The tournament gets into full swing Thursday, with the Final Four set for April 1 and 3 in Phoenix. Villanova, which won the title last year on a buzzer-beating jump shot by Kris Jenkins, will open its quest for back-to-back titles against the winner of an open-

“I want the guys to enjoy it tonight, and then tomorrow, we’re just one of 68 teams,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said.

Though Kansas was the overall second seed, it opened as the favorite in Las Vegas, at 8-1. North Carolina and Villanova were next at 9-1, followed by Gonzaga, Duke and Kentucky at 10-1.

Overall, the bracket produced more small quibbles than true blockbusters.

If there was any debate about the top, it was about whether Duke (27-8) really belonged as a No. 1 instead of a No. 2, which is where it ended up. The Blue Devils won four games in four nights at the Atlantic Coast Confer-

ence tournament, and have beaten the rival Tar Heels (27-7) twice. But Mark Hollis, the chair of the selection committee, beat back that debate quickly, telling the commentators on CBS (who dragged out the bracket reveal for more than a half hour) that Duke entered the week as a No. 4 seed.

And though the Blue Devils kept winning over the weekend, “they got stopped on the way by teams that won both their regular-season and conference tournaments (Kentucky and Arizona) and they were never compared to teams on the No. 1 line,” Hollis said.

Teams that didn’t make it off the bubble included Syracuse and Illinois State.

Syracuse was vulnerable because

of its 84th ranking in the RPI and 2-11 record on the road. Still, the Orange ouster was notable because of the outcry when Jim Boeheim’s team made the field with a similarly mediocre resume last year – then made it all the way to the Final Four.

“Last year, we had the same number of losses (14) and the committee chose to go with teams that had wins,” said Boeheim, whose team’s losses this season included blowouts against lower-division St. Johns and Boston College. “This year, it was virtually the same committee but they were emphasizing the losses you had.”

Illinois State’s chances took a blow when it lost to Wichita State by 20 in the final of the Missouri Valley Conference. Also, it turns out Wichita State wasn’t as highly regarded as many suspected – the 20th-ranked team in the latest Associated Press poll only got a No. 10 seed.

Kentucky coach John Calipari, whose Wildcats could face Wichita State in the second round, re-emphasized a point he made last year.

“When you mis-seed somebody, it hurts the seeds above them,” he said.

“You put a team at ‘8’ that shouldn’t be there, and the ‘1’ looks at it like, ‘Why are we playing this team?’”

With never-ending realignment turning more mid-major programs into true majors, the number of socalled little guys making the tournament continues to decline – even if you do count Gonzaga of the West Coast Conference as one of those.

Led by the ACC with nine teams, then the Big East and Big Ten with seven each, the six biggest conferences took 32 of the 36 at-large spots this year.

Michigan shocks Wisconsin to win Big Ten Tournament The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – The Michigan basketball team crammed a lifetime worth of memories into one magical week, and it received a treasured souvenir as a keepsake.

After defeating No. 24 Wisconsin, 71-56, on Sunday to win their first Big Ten Tournament championship, the eighth-seeded Wolverines held high the hardware that accompanied the feat.

Before helping cut down the net, Michigan coach John Beilein gathered his players to deliver an emotional message.

“What I told them is, ‘You’re going

to come back 20 years from now and that trophy is going to sit there and you’re going to tell your grandkids about those five days and what happened. You’ll love it forever.’”

The Wolverines began their journey with a scary skid off the airport runway in Michigan. They ended it by overwhelming the second-seeded Badgers, who had won three straight – including the regular season finale against Minnesota – by a total of 55 points.

Between the aborted flight and their final unexpected victory, Michigan beat Illinois, eliminated top-seed Purdue and sent home No. 4 seed Minnesota.

Tournament MVP Derrick Walton Jr. scored 22 points, D.J. Wilson added 17 and Zak Irvin had 15 for Michigan, which had lost 17 of its previous 20 games against Wisconsin. The Wolverines shot 56 percent and were 10 for 23 from beyond the arc.

As a reward, Michigan will be the No. 7 seed in the Midwest and open the NCAA Tournament against Oklahoma State.

No. 8 Kentucky 82, Arkansas 65: At Nashville, Tenn., De’Aaron Fox scored 18 points, and Kentucky won its third straight SEC Tournament championship by beating Arkansas in a game that got very chippy in the final couple

of minutes.

The Wildcats (29-5) added their 30th tournament title all-time to go with their 48 regular season championships.

Kentucky finished by outscoring Arkansas 9-1, the final points a 3 by Fox. Arkansas (25-9) fell to 1-6 in this championship, having lost to Kentucky for the second time in three years.

Malik Monk and Bam Adebayo each finished with 17 points, and Dominique Hawkins added 14 for Kentucky.

Daryl Macon led the Razorbacks with 18 points, Dusty Hannahs had 14 and Jaylen Barford 13.

Celtics hand the Bulls 5th loss in row

The Associated Press BOSTON – Isaiah Thomas was having a good time on the bench while his teammates were closing out an easy win over the Bulls.

Thomas scored 22 points and later joined fans doing the wave as it circled TD Garden, leading the Boston Celtics to a 100-80 romp and sending the Bulls to their season-high fifth straight loss.

“That was fun. They just did it a little too long,” Thomas said, breaking into a smile.

“It’s always nice when you’ve got a comfortable win and the fans get into it.”

Thomas, the team’s leading scorer at 29.2 points per game, played only 24 minutes and sat the entire final quarter.

He had some fun in the final

minutes of the blowout, taking part with teammate Jae Crowder in the crowd’s cheer.

There were plenty of smiles to go around Boston’s bench after they led the entire way. Avery Bradley didn’t quite know if the Celtics were playing that good or the Bulls were as poor as they looked.

“I asked our team that when I came out of the game,” said Bradley, who scored 17 points. “I was like: ‘Are we playing defense that good?’”

The Celtics rushed to a 13-0 lead, shutting out the Bulls until Dwyane Wade’s jumper nearly six minutes into the game.

Marcus Smart and Al Horford both added 12 points, and no Boston starter played more than 32 minutes.

Robin Lopez and Denzel Valentine paced the Bulls

with 13 points apiece. Wade scored only eight points and Jimmy Butler had five.

“Nobody likes to lose, so, yeah, I definitely think it’s bothering a lot of people,” Butler said. “We’ve got to figure it out. Ain’t nobody going to come in here and show us a blueprint on how to win.

We’ve got to go out there and make it happen.”

Coming off a 2-3 road trip, the Celtics never trailed. After missing their first 12 shots and starting 1 for 19, the Bulls finished with a season-low points in the first quarter and trailed 22-9.

Boston built its lead to 46-21 late in the first half on Bradley’s driving basket. After Lopez opened the second half with a three-point play, the Celtics scored the next 10 points.

INDIANAPOLIS – Northwestern’s agonizing wait went down to the last quadrant Sunday.

Then, finally, everyone jumped for joy.

All those forgettable moments and tantalizing teases over the previous 77 seasons were cast aside as the Wildcats celebrated their first NCAA Tournament bid. By earning the No. 8 seed in the West Region, Northwestern will face ninth-seeded Vanderbilt on Thursday in Salt Lake City.

Around campus and on Twitter, game details really didn’t matter.

What did: Northwest ern ceded the title of having the longest tourney drought among power-five conference schools to Rutgers by becoming one of five first-time entrants in the 68-team field.

The immediate reaction inside Welsh-Ryan Arena included fists pumping, fans cheering and band members spilling onto the court. Outside the arena, the celebration included Twitter posts from notable alums including actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus .

“To see all of this, it gets you emotional because these are the things we all dreamed of,” coach Chris Collins said.

“To see the guys very emotional before we came out, this has meant a lot to them and it’s something we put a lot into, and just a really special day. You don’t get many chances in life in anything to be a part of something historical, things that have never ever been done.”

Before Collins arrived in 2013-14, moments like this one seemed as implausible as the Cubs winning the World Series.

Now, in a five-month span, both droughts are over thanks largely to men who insisted players believe.

In Collins’ case, he instilled such a strong sense of

purpose that his players already were donning T-shirts that read “Northwestern” on one line and “March into April” on the other.

Last year, 20 wins were not good enough. This year, the Wildcats (23-11) refused to be kept out. They broke the school record for wins and reached the Big Ten Tournament semifinals for the first time.

While some can empathize with the Wildcats’ patience, it’s hard to understand for other schools.

Northern Kentucky won the Horizon League championship and the league’s automatic bid in its first year of eligibility.

The one-time Division II power made the jump to Division I in 2011-12, played three seasons in the Atlantic Sun and shocked the basketball world by playing its way into the tourney just one year after going 9-21. Now they’ll play second-seeded Kentucky Friday in Indianapolis.

Jacksonville State (20-14) wasn’t supposed to be here either after going 8-23 last season. The Gamecocks were picked to finish last in the Ohio Valley Conference this season.

Somehow, first-year coach Ray Harper led them to the tourney title, a No. 15 seed and a date Friday in Indy against second-seeded Louisville.

North Dakota (22-9) might be best known as a hockey school and for its hard-fought battle with the NCAA to keep its Indian nickname. But that reputation could be changing after the recently renamed Fighting Hawks stormed back from an 11-point, second-half deficit to beat Weber State in overtime for the Big Sky title.

Star player Quinton Hooker recently passed former NBA coach Phil Jackson for fourth on the school’s career scoring list and will lead the No. 15 seed in the West Region into a showdown with second-seeded Arizona on Thursday.

Crawford, Kane and Panarin lead Blackhawks over Wild

CHICAGO – The Blackhawks handed over a fast start to Corey Crawford, and the All-Star goaltender carried them home.

Crawford made a season-high 42 saves, and the Hawks beat the Minnesota Wild, 4-2, on Sunday to pull within a point of the Central Division leaders.

Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin scored on the Hawk’s first two shots, helping the them (43-20-5) rebound from two straight losses. Trevor van Riemsdyk scored in the second period, and Marian Hossa added his 22nd in the third.

“If you ask anyone in this room, we probably feel we can play a lot better,” said Kane, who reached 30 goals for the second straight season and third time in his career. “Give the credit to [Crawford] tonight. He played an unbelievable game.”

Eric Staal scored his 22nd goal and Mikael Granlund got his 23rd for Minnesota, which has dropped three of four.

Minnesota outshot the Hawks 44-22 for a season high allowed by the Hawks.

The Wild had a lot of good chances, too. Crawford made a pad save on Erik

Haula’s breakaway early in the third while the Hawks were clinging to a 3-2 lead.

“We had a fortunate start, a couple of quick goals, and we slowed down as the game progressed,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “Crow made some great saves, some big saves.”

It was a different story for Devan Dubnyk, trying for his career-high 37th win. He was relieved by Darcy Kuemper after allowing the pair of early goals.

The Hawks finished 3-1 against Minnesota in the regular season. The Hawks and Wild have met in the postseason three times – in 2013, 2014 and 2015 – and the Hawks won all three series and twice went on to win the Stanley Cup. Set up by Panarin, Kane opened the scoring at 51 seconds from the edge of the right circle on a shot that deflected off Wild defenseman Marco Scandella.

Panarin made it 2-0 at 4:38 on a rising one-timer from the slot that sailed over Dubnyk’s blocker. That prompted Boudreau to summon Kuemper.

Crawford was sharp in the second period, stopping all 20 shots he faced.

Meanwhile, van Riemsdyk scored at 5:28 during a delayed penalty to make it 3-1.

Martin Truex Jr. wins at Vegas

LAS VEGAS – Martin Truex Jr. passed Brad Keselowski with two laps to go and avoided a last-lap wreck that led to a pit-road brawl and left Kyle Busch bloodied in a wild finish to the NASCAR Cup race Sunday.

An aggressive Joey Logano got into Busch, sending him spinning down pit road at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Moments later, Busch and Logano tangled, with crew members pulling Busch away as blood ran down his forehead.

“There wasn’t much talking, just a lot of swinging,” Logano said. “I was

racing hard there at end.”

Asked if any blows were landed, Logano replied, “None to me.”

Busch was pulled up off the ground by crew members and taken to the infield care center to get his forehead looked at. He was quickly treated and released.

The fight overshadowed a toughluck finish for Keselowski, who appeared to be pulling away after a restart and on his way to his second win in as many weeks when he ran into mechanical problems.

Truex passed him and held on to become the first driver to win all three segments in NASCAR Cup’s new stage racing.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Sebastien Bourdais pulled off a major upset in the IndyCar season-opener Sunday, driving from last place to a victory that left him in tears.

Bourdais made an offseason move to Dale Coyne Racing convinced he could help turn around the small team, located in Plainfield. The French driver brought two engineers from his glory days and was determined to recreate his early success.

“Dale, I’ll be forever in debt to you.

Thanks for bringing my crew back,” Bourdais said on his team radio.

“Thanks for the opportunity.”

A tearful Bourdais explained in the victory circle just how much this meant.

“It’s the first one, and putting the band back together,” he said.

When he moved to Coyne, Bourdais had the team owner open the payroll to hire engineer Craig Hampson, who led Bourdais to 31 victories, 31 poles and four consecutive titles from 2004 to 2007.

Bourdais also brought with him Olivier Boisson, who was Bourdais’ engi-

ser for sixth on IndyCar’s all-time win list. It was the fifth career win for the Coyne team.

“From last to first, that’s about all you can do,” Coyne said, adding of his new hires, “We knew we’d be much better than we were before.”

Bourdais led 69 of the 110 laps to give Honda a much-needed victory over Chevrolet. He beat reigning series champion Simon Pagenaud to the finish line by 10.350 seconds.

“He was untouchable,” Pagenaud said.

Scott Dixon finished third for Chip Ganassi Racing, in its first race back with Honda. Ryan Hunter-Reay was fourth for Andretti Autosport, and Honda appeared much improved with four drivers in the top five. Takuma Sato was fifth in his first race with Andretti.

But the day belonged to Bourdais, who is off to an amazing start to the racing season. He was part of the class victory in January at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona, and heads to Sebring next weekend looking for another sports car win.

Bourdais also earned a class win in last year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, which is actually Bourdais’ hometown and the one race he’s always wanted to win.

SAN FRANCISCO – Michael Fasman’s 12-year-old dog, Hudson, limps from pain caused by arthritis and an amputated toe, but Fasman doesn’t want to give her painkillers because “they just knock her out.”

So the San Francisco resident has turned to an alternative medicine that many humans use to treat their own pain and illness: marijuana.

On a recent morning, Fasman squeezed several drops of a cannabis extract onto a plate of yogurt, which the Portuguese water dog lapped up in seconds. It’s become part of Hudson’s daily routine.

“We think it’s really lifted her spirits and made her a happier dog,” Fasman said. “It’s not that she’s changed.

She’s just back to her good old self.”

As more states legalize marijuana for humans, more pet owners are giving their furry companions cannabis-based extracts, ointments and edibles marketed to treat everything from arthritis and anxiety to seizures and cancer.

Most of these pet products, which aren’t regulated, contain cannabidiol or CBD, a chemical compound found in cannabis that doesn’t get pets or humans high. They contain little or no tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the cannabis compound known for its psychoactive effects.

But veterinarians say there isn’t enough scientific data to show cannabis is safe and effective for treating animals. Although medical marijuana is legal in 28 states, it remains illegal under federal law, so there has been relatively little research into its potential medical benefits for humans or animals.

“Our hands really are tied,” said Ken Pawlowski, president of the California Veterinary Medical Association.

“Definitely we’re getting more questions from clients asking about it for their pets, but unfortunately we don’t have any answers for them.”

Karl Jandrey, a veterinarian who teaches at the University of California, Davis, said he tells his clients they “use them at their own risk with the potential to spend money for no improvement, or a risk of adverse side effects.”

Despite the lack of scientific data or veterinary guidance, many pet owners are convinced cannabis has improved their animals’ health and well-being, based on their own observations.

Lynne Tingle, who runs a pet adoption center and animal sanctuary, regularly gives cannabis edibles and topical ointments to older dogs with health or behavior issues, including her own elderly dogs Chorizo and Alice.

“You just see a real difference in their spirit. They’re just not in pain, so they’re happier and they’re moving better,” said Tingle, who founded the Richmond-based Milo Foundation. “They just get a new lease on life.”

San Francisco-based TreatWell Health is one of a growing number of companies marketing cannabis products for pets despite questions over their legality.

TreatWell sells cannabis tinctures – extracted from marijuana plants in Humboldt County – that can be added to food or dropped directly into an animal’s mouth. Co-founder Alison Ettel works directly with clients and their pets, recommending different formulations based on the animals’ ailments.

TreatWell pet tinctures can help treat anxiety, poor appetite, pain, inflammation and seizures, as well as kidney and liver problems, cancer and glaucoma, according to its website.

Niacin can lower cholesterol Dear Doctor: I’ve been taking niacin for years to lower my cholesterol. Do you think it really helps?

Dear Reader: First, let’s look at niacin and its role in the body. Niacin is a B vitamin needed to create compounds crucial to cellular function. A shortage of niacin, or vitamin B3, can lead to diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash and, when severe, neurologic conditions that manifest as confusion and dementia. Fortunately, because of our varied and plentiful diet, not to mention food supplementation, niacin deficiency is rare in this country.

Some research does support niacin’s ability to improve cholesterol levels. In 1955, in one of the earliest studies of niacin, researchers found that doses of 1,000 to 3,000 milligrams significantly lowered total cholesterol levels in men. Niacin has also been found to lower levels of LDL, the so-called “bad” cholesterol, while raising levels of HDL, the so-called “good” cholesterol.

Niacin has an impact in other ways as well. A 2007 study of 30 patients who took 1,000 milligrams daily showed a reduction in the thickness of their carotid arteries’ interior lining and lower levels of CRP (C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation) when compared to a placebo. Further, a 2009 study of a niacin-plus-statin regimen showed that it led to a reduction in a marker for atherosclerosis in the heart.

Such research suggests that niacin could decrease the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The science, however, is less than conclusive.

A 1986 study followed 1,189 men who had a history of heart attack and compared those who took niacin at 3,000 milligrams per day to those who got a placebo. After five years, the niacin group reported fewer heart attacks, but no difference in the death

rate. After 15 years, however, the niacin group reported an 11 percent decrease in mortality rates, mostly from a decrease in heart disease.

Studies of niacin in addition to a statin have not shown benefit against either death rates or heart attacks. A 2011 study in the New England Journal of Medicine assessed the impact of 1,500 milligrams of niacin in addition to the drug simvastatin in those with cardiovascular disease. After three years, the authors found no impact on mortality. A 2014 study in the New England Journal of Medicine echoed these findings, with no benefit after 3.9 years of statin-plus-niacin treatment.

It may be that niacin, when taken with a statin, provides no additional bang for the buck. The significant decrease in heart attacks and strokes seen with statin therapy may overwhelm any potential benefit of niacin. Further, as the 1986 study showed, the benefit of niacin may take up to 15 years to show benefit; the trials of statin-plus-niacin were only for three to four years.

Overall, niacin does seem to have beneficial effects on cholesterol and on reducing atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. However, it’s not as powerful as a statin in decreasing rates of heart attacks, and the benefit might not become evident for years.

If you cannot tolerate a statin, niacin may be a good option. But discuss it with your doctor.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY son “Jake” was born last June.

Jeanne His father was Phillips a good friend who I thought I loved and that he loved me. The day I told him I was pregnant, he disappeared. Our baby boy just passed away from SIDS. I’m struggling with Jake’s loss and planning his funeral while taking care of my 5-year-old son. Jake’s father had his mother call and threaten me. She said, “His name better not be listed anywhere in the obituary!” I’m at a loss about how to deal with both of them. I did not list the father’s name anywhere, but it was my choice. After the funeral I’m not sure if I want to see either one of them ever again. Any advice? – Grieving in Colorado Dear Grieving: I am so sorry for the loss of your baby boy. Yes, I do have a word of advice.

Even in the midst of your grief, you are thinking clearly. Why you would ever want contact with either of those despicable individuals again is beyond me. Feel free to write them off and go on with your life.

If you meant what you wrote, that you do not want to be the other woman, then end the affair once and for all and – as you put it – just walk out.

Dear Abby: I have worked in various retail places for many years. I am surprised at how some parents allow their children to run amok in stores and fail to teach them how to behave in public places. When this happens, and there’s a danger of them running into tables and customers (I have seen it happen), should the employees say something to the children? Or should they notify the manager about the disruptive children, and let the manager talk to the parents or the children? Should it be announced over the intercom that children need to stay with their parents? What’s the best way to handle this common problem? A place of business is not a playground. Dignified paying customers who are there to support the business are offended by the lack of discipline some children are allowed to display. – Paying Customer Dear Paying Customer: If you take it upon yourself to “correct” the inattentive parent, the person is sure to become defensive. A better way to handle it would be to point it out to the manager of the establishment and let him or her deal with it, because if someone were to be hurt on the premises, there could be legal implications.
